A great topic, and travelling to the Gold Coast venues (and the border!) was an inspired idea. If you do any location filming again, it might be worth getting a lapel mic and an audio recorder for some clearer sound. I found you a little difficult to hear over the ambient noises at times. Nevertheless, looking forward to the 2000 Essendon video.
Thanks! Yeah I was a bit disappointed by the way the audio came out, it was very much an amateur setup (just a phone mounted on a suitcase, I got a few weird looks 😂😂) Lapel mic's a great call, will definitely get one if there's any more on location stuff.
The Gold Coast Suns best season was in 2014, however one man was carrying the entire team on his shoulders. His shoulder got dislocated in a fiery match against the Magpies and while the Suns won the match, the injury to their star captain ended up exposing a massive hole in their entire side and they lost most of their remaining games to drop outside the 8 never to recover for the rest of the decade.
I'll be honest, although he never inteded to dislocate Ablett’s shoulder, I've always despised Brent Macaffer for that tackle. Not only ruined GC's best season but arguably robbed GAJ of another Brownlow, as well as derailing his career output from that point on.
Gold Coast always interested me as a kid. Back in the early 90s, I remembered Gold Coast being famous for their theme parks like WB Movie World, Sea World and Dream World. Wet and Wild water park I didn't know about until later on in the 90s. Only went there 3 times during the late 90s when I was a young teenager during Family Holidays and Scouts Camps. Outside of those theme parks, I often wanted a Gold Coast team to do well in sport so Brisbane Bears was my 2nd Fav team when I was a kid so while I saw my fav team the Geelong Cats have great games only to loose grand finals, I did take note of the Bears and their rise up during the mid 90s to become the team that would dominate the decade later.
I lived on the Gold Coast from '89-2001 (age 13-25) and never knew anyone (not 1 single person) who followed a local Gold Coast team. No one on the GC came from there, so brought their previous teams they supported with them. The GC just could not win over any new supporters for all their teams.
Sounds about right! Really difficult to found a new team and build the right culture. I think since 1980, the only real successes have been the WA AFL sides, the Crows, the Broncos, Storm and Raiders in the NRL, and a couple of A-League sides. Big failure rate, lots of recent clubs seem plastic.
Great idea! Wouldn't be able to do it for a while but certainly interested in doing a Tassie vid! I've got something planned a bit down the line for the 1997 Hobart TFL team, that might fill the gap haha
Gold Coast should be stripped of their license & it should get given to Tasmania. A proper AFL state. The Suns haven't even made the Finals once in their whole history. There's only enough room for one AFL team in Queensland and that's the Lions. Gold Coast are an absolute abomination.
While everything you said is pretty much true, I feel you have been a bit harsh on the Suns. They were always going to have issues but the AFL knew this. It’s the hardest market to crack, even harder than Sydney. But there is so much growth in the region that it’s a no brainer for the AFL. The AFL must persist with the GC and I feel it will succeed. It has the best weather and a decent population for it to succeed. Give it 20 years more and I guarantee the GC will have a premiership and a decent membership talley. BTW, I heard in one of your videos that you said the 2001-2003 lions were the best team ever? I think you should do a video on why you think this. I for one disagree for a multitude of reasons, but the biggest probably being that they never even finished top in any of their premiership years. Better than Essendon, Geelong, Hawthorn and Richmond? I don’t see it personally. But I would love that video where you argue the case. Keep up the great work
The Suns have done well to last, considering what's happened with all the other GC teams. I'll admit, I don't like them, and I was far from balanced here haha The Lions video is an interesting idea - and I must say since then, I've wavered on my views. The sims I've run (albeit on AFL Evo 2 😬😬) and other data I've pulled shows Geelong to be superior, relative to teams in those seasons. Maybe a video comparing those empires is in order?
@@thegaz-man Absolutely. If you have the data, I recommend it’s worth a video. Essendon, Brisbane, Geelong, Hawthorn, Richmond I think all need to be compared. As for Gold Coast, I have recently moved to Bris from Adel and must say they are my new number 2 team. I think they will succeed. Footy in Qld is getting much bigger. 50k members is not out of sight IMO within a decade. Especially with Dimma now coaching. Members will follow if he can have some success.
there is no way the gold coast has good weather for footy. for fans to watch, maybe, but not to play, especially day games near the beginning and end of the season.
Ngl GC would've been a much better AFL side if they did 1 thing Just promote a team The Southport Sharks have done incredibly well at VFL level against AFL affiliates and were dominating the QAFL/NEAFL in the mid to late 2000's and 2010's If the AFL just gave the license along with the Metricon venue and good drafting? You would see a good team
Absolutely agree. They had more established facilities than any the Suns were able to generate in the first few years, and seem to be run a lot better as a whole. Plus they had plenty of talent - a midfield of Zorko with the poached Ablett + Rischitelli and the drafting of Swallow would have been great.
I mean not really the Gold Coast locality but QLD Cricket has been very good lately and has played many 2nd XI and practice games close to these areas. Just saying.

Great effort for this one
Great video
The swans guy commenting on the Gold Coast vid 😂
haha nice, funny as always and situation well handled.
would love something about hobart/tassie
Great idea! Wouldn't be able to do it for a while but certainly interested in doing a Tassie vid!

And a year later the Suns reserves side won a premiership
So Gold Coast is essentially the San Diego of Australia.
Pretty much, just with more kitsch shops selling plush koalas

drunk gaz gives horrible histories vibes
Haha cheers, I'll take that!
That day of filming was an absolute trainwreck, and the hangover sure didn't help 😅😅
Guy McKenna was an elite coach though
In retrospect, considering the squad he had, he did far better than Rocket Eade.
@@thegaz-man Plus that 2014 suns team would've made finals if Ablett's shoulder didn't commit suicide
I mean not really the Gold Coast locality but QLD Cricket has been very good lately and has played many 2nd XI and practice games close to these areas.

Would be interesting to see those teams' win % on the GC!
South Port and the Gold Coast Suns VFL are better afl teams then the suns
I'm pretty sure I can get 22 drunk tourists on the GC to outplay the Suns 🤣
