This is what happens when you force a team upon a city that really doesn't embrace the sport, instead of looking elsewhere to 'less glamorous' but more genuine and rich in football history like Hobart.

Glad to see that the Suns are in a much better place now. They sometimes make dodgy list changes but they’re on the rise.
For the Giants, I hope that their new coach and new players push the Giants back into the spotlight and to their first premiership.
It is without a doubt that both clubs had an absolute shocker entering the league, but it makes me happy to see them rise. I think the Suns squad has potential and that they can possibly make the bottom half of the top 8 this season. I also think that the Giants will improve under a new coach and with a new game style.
People who say that these clubs should fold seem to forget that these clubs are expansion clubs and still young. They’ve had a fair experience with decent players in their squads and I think that after making those mistakes of letting these key players go, they’ll learn from it.
Don’t even get me started about their academies either, especially the Suns. Let’s just say, the future for these clubs are going to be great
Awesome video mate, love the insight into the Suns and Giants ❤

I think it comes down to one word - leadership. Look at the two teams at their inception...
Gary Ablett was the biggest and best name in footy in 2011 and was the face and captain of Gold Coast... but he was not a leader. He was there more to bring in profit and money as opposed to building a winning culture. He was absent from training more often then not, doing sponsorship conferences and promotions. There was really no other players on their list at that stage with leadership qualities... just a bunch of 18 year olds and some 'has been' players from an array of clubs (aka Josh Fraser and Michael Rischitelli). Also, their coaching staff were all fresh faced to the AFL.
Now compare that with GWS. They landed one of the best senior coaches of all time - Kevin Sheedy and had premiership winning coach Mark Williams as a senior assistant. Straight away they had two premiership coaches to build a winning culture. They acquired seasoned footballers to complement their first gamers (Chad Cornes, Tom Scully, Phil Davis, Rhys Palmer, Callan Ward, Luke Power, Dean Brogan) and over the next couple of years they also acquired older players who found a second life at the club (Shane Mumford, Heath Shaw, Steve Johnson).

    • @____Riley____
      @____Riley____ 4 года назад

I mean do agree with you about GC leadership being their biggest issue at their inception. But I think it was less to do with the players and more to do with the structure of the club with their coaches and administrators. To be fair to Rischitelli he joined GC in 2011 after having just won Brisbane's BnF in 2010 and other players like Harbrow who has had an amazing career there, plus having Bock, Brown and Brennan definitely were solid pick ups. But I think having McKenna as the coach to begin with, with no real support, plus the club putting out in the media their plan to win a premiership by 2015 put the players under too much pressure to not only start winning, but also to grow the game in QLD. I think these choices and expectations didn't allow the club and players to naturally grow into their game and team. Then when they weren't being met by 2015, the decisions to sack the coach, then hire Eade which I feel was a terrible decision on fit, continuously put a reset to the club's growth and improvement at the time.

You left out a lot of stuff there mate. GWS had more concessions (including the mini-draft which they used to get 8 top-10 draft picks), Academy access to Riverina (which the AFL eventually removed from their zone), bigger list and salary cap over a longer peiord of time (plus COLA on top of that for the first few years), and got one of the best facilities after only a couple years, whereas Gold Coast were training out of tin sheds and demountables (with no tempature regulation in hot and humid conditions) for the first 8 years, which turned away most players they tried to atract from other clubs, and hurt the development, high performance, fitness and recovery of players already there (including kids in their academy who didn't have the same access to better facilities the other northern teams had). This meant GWS were able to build a lot of depth through high draft picks, riverina academy picks, extra money in the cap and better facilities. Gold Coast were never able to build depth cause all they really had were the picks they got when they started.
Also, let's make no mistake that Jeremy Cameron (who has now left, and people think GWS' premiership window is closed solely cause he left) and Toby Greene were stars from the beginning. They relied on them just as much suns did Ablett. Also Luke Power was also inaugural captain, who was past his prime, but still a star captain.
Now gold coast did make some mistakes in regards to recruiting, but it is clear that GWS were given so much they could afford to make mistakes, and Gold Coast weren't given enough.

G'day Footy A2Z another great video👍. I love all these kinds of presentations. Im sure you are like me in regards that AFL is the most exciting and dynamic form of football human beings have ever invented. And it's ultimate destiny is world domination. But the game is notoriously hard to export. If the AFL were ever to expand beyond our borders how would it be done? How could this sport even get a foothold into a market like say the US? A nation that already has other huge sports to complete with? Can you do a hypothetical episode one day on a strategy of mine? It's simple really. In one word 'KIDS'. What if each and every existing AFL club picks a town or region of the United States to set up base. One that hasn't got good representation in another big league. And they introduce the Ozkick program to all the schools in the area from grade 1-5. Stick to the program for 5years. Then double down and include junior high this time for another 5 years. As the decade draws to a close the AFL would have taught thousands of children in the US the fundamentals of our game. The love of the sport will spread, those kids taught other kids and so on and so on. But because each club administrats that region on behalf of the AFL those regions become talent pool for that particular club back home. And the flow on effect is in full swing..it will take time a decade at least I reckon but the fruits it will bring will be strong and take our game to the 22nd century.. obviously there is WAY more to think about. Thats were you come in.. can you do a vid one day about this? Roast me if you want to I don't care😁👍 but I'd just love to hear other thoughts on this topic 👍Cheers once again for you excellent work. It should of been completely the other way round.
Aussie Rules is very popular in the Gold Coast. The AFL should of taken the Southport Sharks bid which would of given administration and financial stability. The Gold Coast is a great place to live.
GWS went to a die hard NRL zone to start from absolute scratch. Who wants to live in Sydney's Western suburbs???
Having Kevin Sheddy was a great move. He is passionate about AFL expansion, excellent coach. But just as importantly he had the profile (even in Western Sydney) to be the media and promotional face. And I bet he came cheaper than Gary Abblet.
GWS set up a campus facility in a apartment complex so every one had a place to call home.
10 of 10 to GWS administratiors.
ps having a Fat coach in Stuart Dew is unforgiveable (unless he has some serious medical condition) it sends the message to players that's OK to be lazy.

The GWS have not been a Success they have lost hundreds of millions of dollars. The Gold Coast Suns crowds have been higher on average over the decade despite the fact that GWS have been more successful on the field. In their first year the Suns averaged 19,169 in a Season where they ONLY won 3 matches. That is 7,000 more than the GWS averaged in their best season where they made a Grand Final. Even in 2019 when the Suns were last and the GWS made a Grand Final the difference in average crowd was only 400 odd a match.
The GWS have been a powerhouse on the field for years now but still have got a supporter base that is lower than what Fitzroy's was 38 years ago. The average home crowd for the GWS in 2019 was ONLY 12,267 this is in a year that they made the Grand Final. Fitzroy had an average crowd of 21,676 in 1982. The GWS played in a state of the art all seater Stadium while Fitzroy played in an old run down stadium that was majority standing with almost no facilities at all. Clearly the AFL have made the wrong decision letting GWS and the Suns in ahead of a Tasmanian team. Both Fitzroy and a Tasmanian team would have a higher average home crowd of 12k if they made a Grand Final. Things are not ever going to get any better for the GWS than what they are now if they can not attract a crowd in a Grand Final year god help them when they miss the 8.
