Hey guys, I bumped into yet another deranged footy fan who thinks the VFL from 1897-1989 was completely different to the current AFL from 1990. I wonder how much evidence you can throw at dismantling that silly argument??
It blows my mind that Port won the first ever Showdown. I remember some "experts" at the time predicting that Port wouldn't win a game in their first year
Phenomenal video, captures the history and the essence of the showdown rivalry perfectly. Completely unbiased and accurate. Spot on! Maybe only lacking the mention of some of the classic games in recent times, although that obviously wasn't the focus of the video.
great video, Would love to hear more about the swans move to Sydney, brisbane/fitzroy merger and the WA sides joining the comp (if they're actually interesting)
That's 1 thing the rest of the comp don't understand about this rivalry. It didn't start in 1997 nor did it start in 1991. Port are the SANFLs Collingwood. Anyone that supports a SANFL team either love Port, or hate them with the fiercest passion. Add to that the covert attempt to squeeze into the AFL and there is no rivalry like it. It's to bad that for the last couple seasons these teams are in 2 different places developmentally. It's hard to get as excited when you know your team are going to be creamed Anyway thank you for putting the spotlight on our state. Great video as always guys. Just the right amount of funny and informative
@@dougieboxell6505 considering the maelstrom leading into the game it was a welcome surprise. A win would have been nice though. Hopefully Jason Horne slips back in the draft a little and makes the loss worth it

Also if I'm remembering all of your video correctly you missed a great part of the rivalry with the Ramsgate hotel fight

Though we did get zone selections from uncontracted players in SANFL clubs, even ones that weren’t Port Adelaide. We also got the ability to recruit 5 uncontracted players from other AFL clubs 2 first round picks from the National Draft. 💙🖤🤍🍐⚡️💪
Not sure if you've done a vid on the push by a number of WAFL, SANFL, and VFL clubs to form a breakaway national competition in the early 80s, but it would be an interesting story
The Crows were a composite club, not an existing one, right? Where did they draw their players? Other SANFL clubs, some sort of national draft of the AFL clubs...?
They also "rewarded" the second best coach in the SANFL the previous year. Glenelg LOST that Grand Final, but the Crows took the Glenelg coach as their inaugural coach, rather than the coach of the winning team.
Such a shame the western derby took a dive after 2015, still always a physical match but not as close, hopefully freo winning the last derby has reignited the rivalry
Incredibly bias and undoubtedly false. Although this is subjective, there's no argument I can think of besides "I'm from WA so it's the best". The derby doesn't come close to a Bombers v Collingwood v Carlton or a showdown

Pretty much. However footy fans were excited to see AFL in SA in the first year of the Crows and Port fans did have some interest in the inaugural Crows side as a few Port players from 1990 ascended from to the AFL Crows team. Keep in mind that the Crows had no reserves side, so the players who weren't selected for the Crows matches were sent back to their respective SANFL side to get match time. If I recall Port had up to 6 players playing for the Crows from year 1.
I'm a Glenelg supporter, and when the crows began, they took our coach, Cornes, our captain and vice captain, MacDermott and McGuiness, our fitness coach, Jacques, and around 10 of our players for their inaugural squad. We had some lean years ahead at Glenelg, so barracking for the crows kept me going as Glenelg rebuilt.
Good summary of the recent history, the Crows formation, and the Port Adelaide transition to the AFL. You missed the fact that Port also won the first showdown at Adelaide Oval, You've also totally missed the significance of the hatred for Port Adelaide pre-1990. Port have not only been super successful, but they had competed in half of the grand finals ever played in the SANFL. They also didn't win a lot of early days flags like Norwood did, instead most were won when the comp was closer to full strength. This on-going dominance and strength meant that Port were every SANFL clubs greatest rival. Yes Norwood was Ports, but every other club's biggest rival was Port. The competiton was completely rooted around the ideal of you loved or hated Port. I lived it going to GF's in the 80's with a bus load of others all cheering for whomever was playing Port, except the Port fans. The sheer hatred of Port was already phenomenal, and was like a powder keg that exploded when the PAFC tried to move into the AFL. That hatred is and has always been far more extreme than any other rivalry, and the creation of the amalgamated Crows team, captured the Port Vs the rest mentality and meant from day 1, the rivalry was already number 1. Forget just 25 years of SA clubs AFL existence, this is a rivalry forged over 150 years, and is perfectly encapsulated in the Port Vs the rest structure that is the Crows V Port.
I honestly don't think the whole rivalry and dynamic between Port and Adelaide would work in the same way if they had gone with the Sharks and Green, Blue and White. Something about Adelaide having the traditional South Australian colours and a mascot that evoces the old "Croweater" name really allows it to seem more of a natural rival to Port.
Nope wouldn't have mattered. Port were the dominant club in SA up until 1991. The SANFL stole their chance to go to the next level by putting in a composite side. The rivalry is technical more Port vs SANFL with the Crows representing the SANFL.

Norwood are the history makers, no doubt port as well but how can you mention port without Norwood… Port backstabbed the SANFL, more so Norwood considering half of ports debts were paid off by Norwood as they wanted to have healthy competition. In short, Norwood and port were asked to join the AFL but both rejected, SANFL made tne crows, then port made a successful bid.
@@thescoutn2967 What about Port sending a fax from Alberton pretending to be Norwood ,stating that Norwood also wanted to join the AFL ? Stupid Port obviously forgot that fax machines also print the sender's fax number on the top right side of the page, which showed the number being Port's own fax number.
That is a pretty good summary, however, I think it would be great to update the story by covering why Port have the catch phrase and pre-game song of "Never tear us apart". It is the story of jealousy and pettiness by other SANFL clubs who, via the SANFL, actively tried to sabotage Port Adelaide (both AFL and SANFL teams) by setting rules in place that effectively served to split the two Port teams. (I am forever p*ssed off that Max Basheer has his name on a grandstand at the Adelaide Oval) Thankfully, that rubbish is now over. Port is the only club team from outside the VFL to join the AFL - all the rest are composites, and our history speaks for itself.
Typical Port fans trying to play the victim card despite it was them backstabbing the SANFL and its clubs. As Ken Hinkley says "you get what you deserve" and Port sure did. Tried to go behind the SANFL's back and compromise the entire league for their own benefit, thats the true Port Adelaide tradition, always willing to throw whoever under the bus as long as Port gets its way. Scumbag club with a stolen history that should've gone broke years ago if not for the AFL and SANFL. Port fans should be worshiping the Crows because they're the reason they still exist and are somewhat relevant.
🤣 port backstabbed Norwood and the SANFL. Norwood paid half of ports debt allowing them to continue, you would’ve liquidated the club had Norwood not rescued you! Additionally, Norwood and port were offered afl licences, but refusal at the time eventuates into the crows. Then port, the greedy bastards, backstabbed the SANFL and made a bid. Not to mention they let the maglie die that day, no one that supports the magpies truly, goes to many (or any) power games, and vice versa. It needs to be said, the ‘magpies’ are the power ressies. End of.
Utter garbage. Port played Judas on the SANFL. Once West Coast entered a SANFL entry was inevitable and became a phase of brokering the best entry deal. It was an open agreement amongst the 10 clubs that an entry would be undertaken with the support of the SANFL,whether that be a composite,Port,Norwood or other. Norwood was offered a licence but respectfully declined. Port breeched that process and was rightfully ostracised and as punishment for it’s duplicity should never have received the second licence.
Hang on if you lot hadn’t tried to stab the sanfl and other clubs in the back, and back door it in to the VFL, The VFL would’ve gone broke, the sanfl would’ve become the premier Australian rules comp, would’ve kept all sanfl clubs and wouldve invited other clubs to join, so we’ll done port Adelaide for single handedly killing the sanfl, and if that wasn’t enough you did it again by merging with the Port Adelaide Magpies fc and turning your sanfl team in to your afl reserves team further diluting the sanfl So really all you did was kill the SANFL the league where your club holds its history
A good video. Seems to be from a neutral aspect, which is fine. But it should probably be mentioned that in SA if you want to follow footy, you have to pick a side you fall on when it comes to history. Even before the events of the early 80s where the video starts, so many cultural footy things happened.
can any port fans answer this for me please? when the crows joined were you a crows fan up until power joined? or did you hate them right from the beginning? im finding this SA footy stuff kinda interesting even though i cant stand either side (sorry not trying to be a dick just being honest lol)
According to the Port Adelaide AFL Bid Video, when the crows entered the league, the SANFL recorded a 14% decrease in attendance. However, Port Adelaide was the only team that had an increase (13%). Seems as though the Crows’ admission just fuelled the hatred from Port Magpie supporters.
Hated them with a passion from the start! I hate the crows more than I hate collingwood. Before port entered the AFL I liked the bombers, mainly because quite a few port players went to essendon, wangers, anderson, cockatoo.
I supported Port in the SANFL and had a passing interest in Brisbane Bears and Collingwood. I was happy to see SA win a flag in 97, but apart from that it was all Port all the time. You have to remember no one in SA gave a shit about the VFL pre-1991, our league was already a big and quality league, the years between 91-96 when Port finally got in were always littered with Port trying to also get in, as we started our push to enter in 1994, so we always thought we'd be in the AFL one day and only a small number of Port supporters abandoned the club for the Crows.
Fun fact the very first Australian Rules Football team in South Australia was the Adelaide Football Club, know as now the Old Adelaide Football Club that was established in1860 and wore black and red. The Adelaide Football Club established in 1990 adopted the name from the states first ever team. Sure there isn't any direct link because the 1860 Old Adelaide Football Club which was dissolved in 1893 but the name was always Adelaide first before Port ever existed in 1870. The Adelaide Football Club was first in both paths to South Australian and then national football history.
Port Adelaide and the rest of the SANFL sounds like the rivalry between Williamstown and Port Melbourne back in the day, they hated each other, the fans fought just because the other person was wearing the opposing jumper, nothing else. Constant brawls were a thing, if you were a williamstown fan and wanted to go to a port melbourne home game against the towners......You had to go in a group, otherwise there was a decent chance you would get belted, no matter how nice you were and vise versa for Port fans.
Port love to make it seem as though everyone was against them, with their blue collar narrative and what not. The big rivalry was between Norwood and port, nothing more, nothing less. Sure Sturt Glenelg and north were among the ‘big clubs’ but Norwood and port have a combined 76 SANFL premierships, no other clubs get near it combined.
You have the state colours so what🤣, carlton has the victorian state colours does that mean they represent victoria🤣 You do have more supporters ill give u that, but that makes up only half of SA population, the other half hates your guts. As I said not everyone in SA likes the crows or port, so your argument fall down. You dont represent the state if half the population hates you. Calling yourselves the team for all south australians just makes you look like dicks! Your not the state team the state team is the state team! Any football club worth its salt represents its'self to not do so would be foolish.

bloody sanfl. the old dinosuars ruined the the game in SA. 2 chances to have a team in the big league and they screwd it up. it took port to force their hand and apply for a licence for the crows. now both sides are in and the sanfl is raking in 100's of millions from the 2 afl clubs and the sanfl is getting worse to watch every week
The SANFL always wanted too create and enter a side in a truly new national competition that must start from scratch since around 1980.The SANFL were literally the first to want a national competition. The then SANFL did not want to support any SANFL team entering the VFL for that very reason...they then came too a compromise and literally forced the then VFL too change its brand too the AFL. The following year after they then entered a side. Their efforts was to try and start a completely new competition but to no avail. That's the reason why they held of for so long. It had nothing to do with Port or even Norwood what so ever.
It was never pronounced sanfell, It was always pronounced S.A.N.F.L. Only after the national competition kicked off, With most of the football media based in Victoria did it start to be call the sanfell
Sadly its a manufactured rivalry in a largely soulless, expanded VFL mish-mash. The opportunity to have the great Port-Norwood rivalry gracing the AFL was missed which would’ve dwarfed the Crows/Port conflict. We have Port’s clandestine entry to blame for that. Norwood,by rejecting the VFL’s overtures consigned themselves to history.

Hang on if you lot hadn’t tried to stab the sanfl and other clubs in the back, and back door it in to the VFL, The VFL would’ve gone broke, the sanfl would’ve become the premier Australian rules comp, would’ve kept all sanfl clubs and wouldve invited other clubs to join, so we’ll done port Adelaide for single handedly killing the sanfl, and if that wasn’t enough you did it again by merging with the Port Adelaide Magpies fc and turning your sanfl team in to your afl reserves team further diluting the sanfl
So really all you did was kill the SANFL the league where your club holds its history
5:58 lol he spelt September wrong.
The 1st Showdown was not in August. I think it was in April 1997
Can you do the Derby
Do the Western Derby
A good video. Seems to be from a neutral aspect, which is fine. But it should probably be mentioned that in SA if you want to follow footy, you have to pick a side you fall on when it comes to history. Even before the events of the early 80s where the video starts, so many cultural footy things happened.
You forgot Norwood's exploration of trying to join the VFL in 1985 after their 1984 flag.
You should've done a video on the Western Derby first, it being two years older
can any port fans answer this for me please? when the crows joined were you a crows fan up until power joined? or did you hate them right from the beginning? im finding this SA footy stuff kinda interesting even though i cant stand either side (sorry not trying to be a dick just being honest lol)
@@Shaun-ws5kt thanks
Nope. Hated them from the get go for screwing us over.
Another chapter to the Showdown is coming in 2023
wow
Fun fact the very first Australian Rules Football team in South Australia was the Adelaide Football Club, know as now the Old Adelaide Football Club that was established in1860 and wore black and red. The Adelaide Football Club established in 1990 adopted the name from the states first ever team. Sure there isn't any direct link because the 1860 Old Adelaide Football Club which was dissolved in 1893 but the name was always Adelaide first before Port ever existed in 1870. The Adelaide Football Club was first in both paths to South Australian and then national football history.
Cool story bro. Adelaide fc est 1991.
Adelaide Crows will always be the SA Team
You keep thinking that mate. 26 - 24 says otherwise.
@@Slinky96 yup, where’s your premierships?
How so? There not the state team, and not everbody in SA supports either team.
@@carlofaccini8034 Crows have State colours, more supporters, premierships. Port represents Port Adelaide
The first showdown was in April, 1997.
A rather large error
Watch it at 1.25x speed, trust me.

Not an Adelaide fan and I don’t live in SA but I hate port and quite like the crows
The real biggest and longest rivalry in Australia has always been Norwood v Port. Norwood deserves a licence.
Thank you!
SA doesn’t have the population for a third team, Norwood won’t be added
@@lexiright5609It's not about population, it's about participation numbers.
@@gregrobins5615 We literally do not have the population to be able to pay for a Norwood football club fanbase. Yes I’m sure many players would want to be on the team, that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea
@@lexiright5609 Sorry, but 1.4 million says otherwise. Norwood are the obvious choice and SA has a high participation rate, higher than WA even.
bloody sanfl. the old dinosuars ruined the the game in SA. 2 chances to have a team in the big league and they screwd it up. it took port to force their hand and apply for a licence for the crows. now both sides are in and the sanfl is raking in 100's of millions from the 2 afl clubs and the sanfl is getting worse to watch every week
Should have been norwood instead of port
The SANFL always wanted too create and enter a side in a truly new national competition that must start from scratch since around 1980.The SANFL were literally the first to want a national competition. The then SANFL did not want to support any SANFL team entering the VFL for that very reason...they then came too a compromise and literally forced the then VFL too change its brand too the AFL. The following year after they then entered a side.
Their efforts was to try and start a completely new competition but to no avail.
That's the reason why they held of for so long. It had nothing to do with Port or even Norwood what so ever.
So...Port Adelaide's heritage is being a bunch of sneaky backstabbers, confirmed?
It was never pronounced sanfell, It was always pronounced S.A.N.F.L. Only after the national competition kicked off, With most of the football media based in Victoria did it start to be call the sanfell
port will never be forgiven for trying to kill the SANFL
Exactly.
And we couldn’t care less
Port literally SAVED the SANFL.
If it wasn't for Port forcing the SANFL to act, they would have sat on their hands until they went broke.
Carn the crom
Return to form.
Hence why I despise Mike Sheahan
Hits different? Wtf does that mean?
Crows is a joke of a franchise
A pathetic history
Sadly its a manufactured rivalry in a largely soulless, expanded VFL mish-mash.
The opportunity to have the great Port-Norwood rivalry gracing the AFL was missed which would’ve dwarfed the Crows/Port conflict. We have Port’s clandestine entry to blame for that. Norwood,by rejecting the VFL’s overtures consigned themselves to history.
Alright greatest footy rivalry is a bit much
Its true.
Collingwood vs Carlton> port vs crows
Carlton are an irrelevant club. Literally have not won a flag on merit for over 30 years. No one cares about Carlton v Collingwood anymore.
The Western Derby is a clash with far greater rivalry.
That’s only a Western Australian opinion.
@@arnolddavies6734 it’s a fact
No it's not and wait until Norwood get in, the gulf will get wider.
@@gregrobins5615 lol Norwood are never getting in.
@@MrBarry465 Don't be so sure of that, Norwood are building nicely for a tilt. The 10 million dollar function centre, new electronic scoreboard and signage, AFLW etc. Tasmania and Norwood next.
