This is one of the greatest films I've ever seen, irrespective of country or genre. I don't even care all that much for the samurai film genre to begin with, but I come back to watch this film time and time again. So well crafted, it's a gem for sure.
The Twilight Samurai is one of my favorite movies of all time and I feel lucky to have it on DVD. Recently rewatched Love and Honor and warmed to it more on second viewing. Found that DVD at my library. If anyone has trouble finding DVDs, I recommend checking with your public library. Even if they don’t have it on the shelf they can often get it through inter-library loan.
i have the entire Twilight trilogy on DVD: twilight samurai, hidden blade and love&honor. i never tire of watching them over and over. they are full of meanings
Hiroyuki Sanada is the epitome of genius. He’s is so lovely, he’s a master of his art/work. I *feel* and am touched by every role he has chosen throughout his career. 🙏🏽
Holy crap dude. I have this on dvd, and its my second favorite movie in existence, and now i get to see some of the other stuff hes done, and maybe ill pick up another dvd or 2 of his. I never researched anything regarding his other films, and couldnt even name them. Thanks, man👊
Please, please, please can someone release this on Bluray and/or HD digital in the UK. I first saw this on TV and rushed out and bought it on DVD, I've been waiting years for for a clearer HD edition. When it was shown on one of the streaming platforms a while back it look like it was a VCD edition. So disappointing as the visuals are so beautiful. This film has soul and heart, and deserves a quality re-release over here.
The movie is based on a short story in "The Bamboo Sword: And Other Samurai Tales" by SHUHEI FUJISAWA. The translation of the book is so good that it feels like written in English. However, the story in the movie is almost entirely a new creation. I like this movie. The story is believable, sincere and ... I am running out of adjectives.
...beautiful, moving and realistic. unlike other samurai films where killing is the norm, here the Twilight Samurai was actually nervous, got his affairs in order and braced himself for a possible death despite his obvious high level skills as a swordsman. loved every second of it
@@austinsavage See "Love and Honor". There is this duel between a blindman and a swordsman (master level). You feel (I felt) a danger for some portion of body being chopped off (I exaggerate a little but certainly being cut through) during the sword fight.
@@木村典子-v6e I heard Hiroyuki Sanada is a practitioner of kendo. So, his act certainly made the movie believable. However, I think it is the director Yoji Yamada who made this movie realistic.
I got my copy in ebay. Its a promocopy though so image quality is low like old samurai movies. But clear footage 20 bucks i got lucky. Its kinda pricey for retail copies. Hope you find one soon! Edit = sorry everyone 😄 i checked abd its the hidden blade i got a promo copy of. Twilight samurai i got a legit copy but paid decent for it. Nothing to crazy. I APOLOGIZE FOR MY INSOLENCE
You can get a copy here. Excellent translation and quality plus I personally like the cover. You can also get the other 2 films which are also excellent movies. samuraidvd.com/twilight-samurai/
Thank you so much for this review. I enjoyed your insights about the historically significant aspects of this film. I also enjoy listening to your take on what makes this film so compelling. I can't agree more! Great Job!! I will now look to find Love and Honor and The Hidden Blade.
A masterpiece indeed. I think the way Yamada directed it is trully masterful. Kurosawa wrote the script for After The Rain and even though that film is very enjoyable, this one to me is superior. I recommend the movie Humanity And Paper Balloons by Yamanaka Sadao. He was a mentor for Akira Kurosawa, very good movie IMO.
Not sure if you've heard already but Sanada's mentor, the legendary 'Sonny' Chiba, has passed away at the age of 82 due to Covid related pneumonia. Just thought you should know.
All three movies in this trilogy are very good, but Twilight Samurai is the best of them all. I would rank them in this order - Twilight Samurai I would rate as 10/10, Hidden Blade as 8/10 and Love and Honor as 6.5/10 (Some may disagree but I rate this a little lower as I just am not a fan of the blind Samurai trope which to me seems plain silly). In each case there are strong and emotional love stories underpinning them and this is what really makes these movies different. The stories are accessible and interesting, the actors are well chosen and the whole come together in each case as a fine and watchable movie.
I want to watch it so desperately, searching everywhere on streaming platforms or for download, and I just cannot find it! 😖I am absolutely ready to pay for the movie but it’s nowhere to be found :( except maybe on a DVD,but then I’ll have to buy a DVD-player cause I don’t own one for more then 10 years already 😊
Loved this and THE HIDDEN BLADE, haven't seen LOVE AND HONOR yet. I maybe in a minority but I actually enjoyed THE HIDDEN BLADE more because it dealt a little more with the modernization of Japan than TWLIGHT. Sanada truly became the Mifune of the 21st century with TWILIGHT though. No surprise that he's going to be playing Mifune's role in the new adaptation of James Clavell's "Shogun".
I didn't know Sanada was playing that role, but that's going to be great as he is like a Mifune. Actually you might not be in the minority, I was blown away by the hidden blade. It showed more of the effect on the samurai in that era and it was an all around powerful movie and different kind of story. Also I loved the ending!
@@bushidoblues9302 oh yes loved the ending of HIDDEN BLADE, especially the doctor's explanation lol. I've read that Sanada is also a Shakespearean afficinado and starred in several stage productions in Japan. He come such a long way from being Sonny Chiba's sidekick.
I've just recently bought Twilight Samurai on DVD, though I haven't had a chance to watch it, perhaps this weekend. With the exception of Message from Space (A Star Wars ripoff), I can't think of a single film with Hiroyuki Sanada that I haven't liked, specially him as a Samurai.
I was lucky to see Love and Honor on the big screen in Bangkok, but It took me a while to find it again because the title was changed to The Poison Taster here for some reason.

Translating this movie into my first language has been the greatest privilege of my professional career.
I would be proud too!
説明に間違いがありますので、訂正させていただきます🙏この作品は、監督の山田さんの原作ではなく、「藤沢周平」という歴史小説の有名な作者の作品です…

This and "when the last sword is drawn." Are the two best samurai films of the 2000s
I was thinking about this movie the other day and completely forgot it's name.
Nice one for the reminder, great movie

True fans remember when this video was called "Untitled Project."
Lmao only the truest of fans
This is an excellent trilogy, a masterpiece i’d say. If i have to rank it, Twilight Samurai is the best followed by The Hidden Blade
And the third?
Samurai were basically civil servants.
