This movie is a masterpiece....seen it several times...
This is my favourite movie. This movie is it all; Love story, Action, Revenge, Comedy, Drama, Histroical setting, Policital thriller, Honor ...etc. all of these in one movie.
i AGREE ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THIS FILM It is simply Beautiful. shows an Honorable, humble, and courageous low caste Samurai. I think you will be Moved by watching it Thank you Yoji and cast.
Yoji Yamada and Isao Tomita...the film director and the music composer were great together!! And Yamada is still around with 91 years old!!
Totally agree I watched it not expecting much but ended up considering The Hidden Blade one of the best Samurai film I've ever seen.
I consantly refer to (give copies of this movie) the marching scene in this movie when I teach Aikido to explain how to slide with your feet instead of stepping when you move forward.
Great review Mr. Blues. love this movie I watched this and twilight many times. I am a collector of Japanese swords and have an extensive samurai movie collection . Many I purchased from Merlin at the shows. He is a great guy and I talk with him often. I highly recommend getting the movies he does.
Thank you. Yes Merlin is a great guy, he gave me this and love and honor. This trilogy is excellent. Love and Honor impressed me the most. It's so unique from any samurai film I've ever seen.
Excellent review. This is also one of my favorites. I liked the scene with the main characters old teacher that had retired to be a farmer. As a long time kendo student, it was cool to see that even when while farming, the teacher was practicing his footwork. Great movie.
Awesome film. Great acting. Great story. Very realistic.
the scene where he revisits his old master to receive the lesson is one of my all time favorite scenes in all samurai movies.
found it literally breathtaking as i could almost feel it. it's so well shot.
This is the second time hearing about the unofficial trilogy. I am watching the Twilight Samurai for the first time and cannot wait to see this.
It's such a great trilogy. Really is absurd how unappreciated it is.
@@bushidoblues9302 It's a masterpiece. I disagree with your obsession on the cgi...the reason you felt the acting as "so natural" is that it is brilliant...directing, acting, dialogue.... beautiful
@Mike Valdez oh it is a brilliant film. I can forgive 1 second of cgi.
@@bushidoblues9302 But we don't forgive your forgiveness! I challenge you to a duel Miyamoto Musashi style!
I just finished watching this movie. This movie is brilliant. I was so caught up in the plot and it was so romantic. I love Shuhei Fujisawa’s works and I really felt The Twilight Samurai and The Hidden Blade did his works justice.
Everyone is talking about the sliding feet on the floor and martial arts. However, as someone who studies Nihon Buyo (Japanese Classical Dance), you actually slide your feet on the floor also. Noh also slides the feet but they turn the toes, which is a throwback from medieval Japan’s nobility walking style. I’ve walked the floors of Japanese castles and it’s super loud if you walk regularly on them. The creaks are so loud. If you slide down a hall, it’s less annoying.
Love this movie.. I had the DVD but it started freezing on me. 😭😭
I have seen the other two films in the trilogy, but I haven't seen this. BTW, have you seen Tora-san movies by Yoji Yamada? The actor Kiyoshi Atsumi is already dead, but the character Tora-san is still loved by us Japanese.
Thanks for talking about this
You're welcome
I haven't seen this movie in a long time, but the CGI in that one scene now looks jarring. They should have used practical effects...
Yeah it takes you right out of the film. Everything else is great though.
The scenes with the Western educated soldier training the Samurai in the use of modern weapons were some of the most funny and bitterly ironic in the film. Would you consider the infamous CGI scene to be a sort of call back to SEVEN SAMURAI?
Yeah and the training scenes depicted the era of western influence making it's way into Japan, great stuff.
Why would the cgi scene be related to seven samurai?
@@bushidoblues9302 I was thinking of the death of Kyūzō. He's the greatest swordsman of the whole group and he's shot in the back. Instead of getting a glorious final duel with some bandit, he's killed by a cowardly rifle shot. Yaichiro getting his hand shot off reminded me of that and both symbolize hows guns truly changed Japan.
@@albion65 very good point. Such a skilled swordsman is killed in a cowardly method. In seven samurai it represented the end of the samurai era just like the hidden blade depicted.
@@bushidoblues9302 one final subtle way I noticed how this film is taking a wider view of how the Meiji Restoration and the end of the Samurai Era affected Japan in comparison to TWILIGHT SAMURAI is, the final fight spills out into the streets. In TWILIGHT it remains inside the house, an intimate affair, here it spills out into the village showing how this story is being told on a much wider scope of things than TWILIGHT. Guns getting involved in this fight and not TWILIGHT's reflects that too.
@@albion65 very deep observation. That was definitely done on purpose as Shûhei Fujisawa was a great writer.
I totally agree. The Hidden Blade is a beautiful, beautiful film. You will shed a tear because of it's beauty. My Japanese is not at this level yet to fully watch without sub-titles. It's my No 1 Japanese movie. I also like director Ozu. Check him out. Great review.
Thank you. Yes I've seen some Ozu, his movies seem to follow a similar theme
Main characters of the samurai trilogy seemed to ponder about resigning the samurai positions. Well, this one actually does at the end, but happy ending with his woman. Not sure if the author (Shuhei Fujisawa) would like to have an amicable (well ok, happy) ending for the romantic side of the story. I kind of suspect that the director (Yoji Yamada) wanted it that way.
