  • Pekiti Tirsia Kali Instructor Logan Lo breaks down the final showdown between Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio Del Toro's The Hunted (2003) in this episode of Scenic Fights' Fight Scene Breakdown.
    What makes this scene memorable among fans are the following two reasons:
    1) The martial art L.T. Bonham (Tommy Lee Jones) teaches Aaron Hallam (Benicio Del Toro), and which they employ against each other, is called Sayoc Kali. It is a variation of Eskrima, the Filipino martial arts system dedicated to weapons. Sayoc Kali deals exclusively with knives in extremely close-quarter combat.
    2) Tommy Lee Jones' character is based on the real life tracker and survival expert Tom Brown Jr. who was also a technical advisor on the movie. The knife used by Benicio Del Toro throughout most of the movie, is a Beck Wilderness Survival Knife, designed by Tom Brown, Jr. and constructed by David Beck

    There is a lot of things that happen in a Hollywood fight scene which effects the on screen action. First having to battle the stuntmen and what they want. Having to train actors with no MA background, dealing with directors who want a certain time frame to the fight and the story to be propelled and serviced through the fight. Balancing wardrobe, and script continuity, makeup and props. And then overall safety of lead actors. Well, you don’t always get to do everything you want or the way realities would dictate. It’s a process of figuring how to get as much good stuff into a big budget fight scene as possible with all those factors. We wanted to represent FMA as well as possible under those conditions.

      Whoa, it's an honor to "meet" you. For sure - I figured as much. If anyone knows knives, it's Sayoc people. Are you in the tri-state area? We've always tossed the idea around of interviews, especially those that have worked both the actual martial arts side and the Hollywood production side.

      @@logan607 I’m in North East PA. When we worked on The Hunted there had not been a serious knife engagement with such a long time frame. As you guys know, knife on knife will not last so long in reality. This was the main hurdle, how to make a knife on knife fight that last over 10-16 beats, or 2-4 seconds.

    "I'd start throwing garbage cans at people." That reminds me of a friend of mine. He was working at a strip club in Detroit and was taking the trash out to the dumpster in the alley behind the club at the end of the night when two guys tried to rob him, one armed with a knife the other had no weapon in hand. He was standing with the dumpster at his back, reached in, grabbed the first thing he got his hands on and threw it in the face of the guy with the knife. It turned out to be a stray cat. A stray cat that was now enraged at having been thrown in someone's face. While that guy screamed in pain and confusion as the cat bit and clawed his face the other one just turned and ran. My friend quickly dove back into the club, locked the door behind him and started yelling for the off-duty cop that worked security.

    In defense of the first strike (to the back of the hand), I think it was a warning sort of "last chance to leave me alone" from Del Toro's character. It goes along with the story, as Jones' character was his mentor and the only person he ever trusted. Brilliant movie. This last scene was a bit more fantastical than necessary, but their first confrontation earlier on on the movie was much ore raw and realistic - in my humble opinion

    • @ScenicFights
      @ScenicFights  3 года назад +94

      We're pretty sure you might be right. Narratively, it makes sense for Benicio del Toro's character to give TLJ character a warning given their history. Great insight.

    • @ikapatino3214

      It wasn't a warning he didn't slash him on the inside of the arm because he wanted LT to kill him that's why he didn't stab him he at least had for opportunities to stab him but didn't.

      It would be hard to meet your instructor and have to defeat the one that introduced you to your art. Del Toro's character has obviously gone over the edge, but there would be a touch of defiance, and some showing off. I think if you wanted a flashy move that wasn't something your instructor would approve of, just to show him your superiority, this would be one to pull. James Earl Jones' voice comes to mind quickly- "I am the master now." A younger man killing the deference he would normally show an elder and a teacher. Not sure if they had all this psychology in mind or it just happened.

    • @puffypedro9248
      @puffypedro9248 3 года назад +10

      agree. i just want to add. The way i understand this movie they dont really want to kill themselves. They care for each other. It was just " hey stop this, be reasoneble" that escalated. So not really good example of efficient knife fight.
      And in the 5 of 8 breakdown, when Jones hiting del Toro's arm. His target was deep wound he inflicted earlier. That must hurt like hell.

    The Hunted movie is so underrated. I think the story in this movie is not bad. It show the effect of P.T.S.D. from the soldier passed the war and the performance of Benicio Del Tero in this film is great. His eye contact looks scared for something.
    The knife fight scenes in this film are great looks realistic.

  • @savagenature1
    @savagenature1 3 года назад +49

    "These are two hurt people"
    Truer words have never been spoken. As well trained as these guys are, all of those knife slashes and stabs are going to catch up to you, especially when fighting on such uneven slippery terrain.
    And yeah, they are definitely feeling some emotional pain: Del Toro is suffering from PTSD to such a degree that he can't get out of that combat mindset. Jones is fighting a former student that he can't seem to reach and he has been thrust into this battle to the death and he admitted earlier in the film that he had never killed anyone before. So, I can only imagine what he might be going through emotionally.
    The way I figure it, their physical fatigue combined with their mental stress could account for some of the "mistakes" they make (if you want a story-based explanation). Plus of course, there are the real reasons, such as trying to make a knife fight last so much longer than it would in real life, among other production challenges.

    I've been doing Kali since 2008. The techniques we see in this movie are pretty much what we teach, but this fight could have ended much quicker. You can stop an oncoming slash with a slash to the opponent's wrist. It's called "defanging" the snake. After that, there's not much he can do. His ability to continue the fight is reduced by 50%.
    In real life, you should avoid getting into a knife fight no matter how good you think you are at it.
    You WILL get cut, and that's a fact.

      If I remember right, the Sayoc team on this movie talked about that. Certainly Tommy Lee did in an extra feature or interview. Basically, at high levels, as you say, fights are over in seconds. So they changed some things on purpose for the movie.

    This is a wonderful breakdown of one of the most beautiful knife fight I ever seen in movies. About the knife drop at 6:25 I know that this seems nonsensical and too risky but I think that the intention of Del Toro's character was to surprise his opponent with a hand swap that was not easily readable.

    My two favorite moments in the fight:
    1: The exchange that resulted in the stab through Jones' arm. It's such a simple exchange with a brutal result. The belly/chest slashes already took the fight to another level, but that Stab through the arm really hit hard for me. And you could say that is when Jones is at his most vulnerable. (And I will admit I have imagined various scenarios where another character goes through that exact same exchange but actually finishes the job)
    2: The knife drop then belly slash. Yeah, I totally see what you guys mean by he could just switch hands without dropping it. I just liked that it was a cool trick that Jones didn't see coming without being too over the top.

    I absolutely love the break down and explanations of the moves and scenes. And yes you both are very correct and accurate as to the should haves and could haves. The only think that you both forget is that as Tommy Lee's character was the instructor. I didn't want to kill his student and ultimately had to. And deltoro his student wanted to die and be at peace so alot of his actions were very calculated not to kill Tommy Lee. But to push him to finally give him peace. In which Tommy Lee didn't want to do at all.

      In our older breakdown videos, we didn't really acknowledge the story and characters (it was a choice), but as more people started requesting that we do, we now acknowledge it as best as we can. You're right though in your comment for sure about Del Toro not wanting to kill Tommy Lee Jones.

    One of the few things I could tell, with my few years of Kali training, was in the scene and movie, which I saw before I knew anything, and several years after I started Kali. Was how easy it was for them to break skin and draw a significant amount of blood. Even through their jackets and pants. especially the stone knife, would not have been able to cut through pants or a jacket clothe and into the skin, maybe at all. I have stone knives and I have real knives of varying sharpness, and most of them would not penetrate through a jacket or pants in a slicing motion. They would in a stabbing motion.

    Great video as always! Y'all have real chemistry. Each person's contributions complement each other, and it's clear everyone's having a good time.
    Since it was mentioned in the early part of the video, I do have one suggestion: Chad, slow down and stabilize your cadence just a bit more. Your breakdowns are detailed and informative, but a lot of it is new to me. It's a challenge to understand because I'm learning something. It's more difficult if I miss a word here and there. Sometimes I need to rewind and pay extra close attention.
    When sharing technical knowledge via speech, a consistent rhythm is best. Humans instinctively recognize patterns. Once we hear your cadence a few times, we learn what to expect. That makes it easy for folks to retain your wisdom.

    I know this is late but another detail about Jones was that not only did he try to protect himself with the knife swing, he also slowly backed himself to a rock while trying to wipe off the blood in his eyes, and then checked his flank. That way he could make sure no one could approach him from behind and get him by surprise.

    5:20 There appears to be a continuity error in this part of the fight scene.
    BDT was earlier wounded in the LEFT arm, so he bound it with some rope/string, but in this clip we see that his RIGHT arm is now bound due to being wounded, which is explains TLJ hits it repeatedly with his fist and also why this is so painful to BDT.
    However, in the very next clip, the binding is now back on his LEFT arm again...
