About the Movie:
The Man From Nowhere (2010) (Korean 아저씨) is a South Korean action thriller film starring Won Bin and written and directed by Lee Jeong-beom. It was South Korea's highest grossing film in 2010.
In this magnificent martial arts knife scene, protagonist Cha Tae-sik finally faces off against Ramrowan a ruthless killer whose weapon of choice in this duel is the karambit. Ramrowan was masterfully played by Thai actor, Thanayong Wongtrakul.
In 2020, this was the most requested Scenic Fights karambit scene and Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) Pekiti Tirsia Kali instructor Logan Lo was so happy to finally use the karambit.

Which fight scene should we breakdown next?
You guys need to review the kitchen fight scene from The Raid 2!
Dude when are you reviewing the raid?
Please more Karambit scenes. John wick 3 had a good one. Also could you do the knife scene from kill bill vol 1. The opening scene was really good.
The Raid and The Raid 2.
Check out this Indie movie called "Rocky Handsome" lots of different knife fighting skills especially towards the end of the film it's brutal. 👍
I honestly like seeing a weapons artist and a BJJ master working together and respecting each other’s arts instead of bashing each other...which sadly happens all too often
We hate to see that too! There are strengths and weaknesses to all fighting styles.
With that being said, if you like what you see with Logan and Chad, make sure to subscribe because all our breakdowns feature the dynamic Scenic Fights duo!
@@ScenicFights it’s something that the world needs, even outside of martial arts people should be more open minded
"You should not have any special fondness for a particular weapon, or anything else, for that matter. Too much is the same as not enough. Without imitating anyone else, you should have as much weaponry as suits you."
Miyamoto Musashi, The Book of Five Rings
(I will preface this by saying I am not an expert in any of the following disciplines, by any means) I have been a Historical European Martial Arts Practitioner for about 10 years, when I was a kid I studied akido, Tae Kwon Do, Kempo, Greco-roman wrestling and Sambo, when I was 16 I bought my first Karambit and started learning about Kali and Silat. I am also a pretty decent marksman. My knowledge of each of these has improved the others, where one leaves a gap, the next fills it, that is not to say I am some unstoppable bad ass or anything, but I am able to see and think differently than someone who is an expert in any one of them.
One of my best friends, who is a Black Belt in shotokan, and I spar pretty frequently, and we are constantly critiquing and improving each other because we are open-minded enough to learn. We make each other think and evolve, which is one of the most useful skills any fighter can have.
I say all this simply to say that the most important tool any martial arts practitioner has, whether or not they are armed, is the mind. To quote Tyrion Lannister, a mind needs books like a sword needs a whetstone.
@@r.b.rozier9692 This honestly applies to almost any craft/ discipline
@@tugsuumovies1999 i dont see many of those who crochet hating on those who knit lol but i see your point
Nice to see the man from nowhere getting love. Don't see a lot of people talking about it considering it's a korean film, but it's one of the best action movies made.
It's so good! I recommend everyone that reads this comment to go watch it now. You won't regret it. It's more than just action film, the story is superb. If you're a fan of John Wick, you can also see how this movie influenced that series.
Have you seen the Villainess ? It's another fantastic Korean action flick.
one of my favorite movies
It’s an AWESOME movie! And a much needed break from watching dramas when you just want the story in one go rather than having to get through 16+ episodes.
Korea makes some pretty decent action, Man from nowhere, old boy, fighter in the wind, among the gods and even train to busan had some sick action
I think at the beginning he uses the blunt edge because he never intended to kill cha. If you know what he'd done just before this, he wants that little girl saved. He wants cha to find her
From a plot perspective, this makes sense for sure! We def think Ramrowan wanted to die and atone for his past.
And he enjoys a great matchup
Also it’s the first move, it’s a test of reaction speed....in the beginning of the movie he was impressed by him so he wanted to know how impressed he should be.
Yes, but he also wanted to test himself. He wanted to best Cha. I think it’s a mistake.
@@ScenicFights he also set up this fight. He deliberately not interfere with the previous fight and put his gun away so that him and Char would have a knife 1 on 1. I am not sure he wants to be killed. That said, he developed a respect for Char. Staring into Char’s eye whilst the latter ends his life is probably the way he would have choose to go.
You definitively need better names for your attacks than 'Knife-Attack No. 4". Something like 'Dragon Thunder Slice' or i dunno
Lmao
@Clinic LBL yes, from famous Gin liquor in Philippines called Ginebra San Miguel where you can see Archangel Michael with sword slashing downwards.
Minato is that you?? 😂
Rising Lower Left Cobra Strike!
Atomic split slash or something.
My favorite thing about your breakdowns is how you leave room for cinematography and dramatic choices by the directors.
Theyre the only fight breakdown channel I've watched that considers super human factors in those particular movies, I watch these guys and one other channel now lol
The correct thing to do when you see someone attacking with a knife is to run away, cause no matter how trained you are you are getting cut.
Logan also emphasis on running if you can in our Donnie Yen Breakdown: ruclips.net/video/wYJ8KaGBABU/видео.html
Agree, getting stabbed sucks lol
I medically retired from Law Enforcement. At the Academy, we were taught knife fighting. Most people used Benchmade
I carried the double edge karambit. Easy to spin and the point on the grip would help. I still carry today. Great channel
Thanks Rob for the comment and thank you for your services!
Can’t believe you guys are only at 44k, went I firsted clicked on the John wick video, I thought it was an insider video due to the high quality, Keep it Up!

@@ScenicFights you guys are awesome
@@ScenicFights 88k now
The man from nowhere is one of my all-time favorites.
Isn't it great how serious Logan is. (Not even 10 seconds into the fight scene) "See, now there's a problem right there"
We love The Man From Nowhere, but we gotta break down the scene without bias.
@@ScenicFights And that is why there's no other breakdown's like the ones you guys do.
The Karambit knife fight scene in the kitchen just b4 the finale from the Raid 2 is probably the best knife fight I’ve seen in any movie 👍🏼🏴
I got this movie just for this last melee and duel scene after watching your last video. Awesome stuff.
Hope you enjoyed it! I'm glad our breakdowns are encouraging people to watch these amazing films.
@@ScenicFights It's definitely a classic.
I wanna see him breakdown the knife fight in the raid 2. That fight was legendary.
Thanks for doing the duel. Seeing how Cha overpowers his opponent arm vs arm at the very end of the scene, I now wonder if that gunshot to Ramrowan's weapon hand shoulder at the start of the melee scene might have been a conscious choice for Cha.
This is one of my favorite movies. It’s so low key
In terms of plot perspective, I think the reason why Ramrowan wasn't trying to fight Cha at his best is because at this point in the movie, he already felt immense guilt from having to put up with the things his fellow colleagues (the ones Cha killed prior to this legendary knife fight) did that were outright disgusting and inhumane. Ramrowan was gradually showing his decaying mental state throughout the movie and I think his inability to even try and fight on par with Cha was due to the idea that he could've already wanted to die at this point thus showing the audience that this was expected to be a very one-sided fight and there was also a looming predictability that Cha was always bound to win against Ramrowan.
I have to agree with you! There was a combination of guilt and respect Ramrowan had for Cha. At this point, he probably did want to die and be punished for what he was involved with. Ramrowan could've shot him a long time ago, but refused not to.
@@ScenicFights This is a fantastic point. I always thought he put the gun down because he respected Cha and wanted to face him as an equal, but maybe this was suicide by fire.
Dammit, excellent point.
@LoganScenicFights I could've told you during the shoot, but I liked the direction you were going. We try not to focus too much on the plot aspect. Perhaps we can do a series where we purely review and discuss the plot of action films? Let's discuss.
I agree. I kept wondering why the director didn't make Ramrowan not shoot Cha. He showed earlier before this that he ran out of ammo, and then reloaded. Why didn't they show him try to shoot Cha and "click" gun empty, no extra mag hence knife fight. I don't think it's an oversight from the director, I think this was what he wanted the audience to infer.. Plus this makes sense for the ending (don't want to spoil for the rest)
I love the karambit. It works into any open hand art really well as a capture/manipulation tool. I train in Hapkido and there are several techniques from dan bong (short stick) that translate into even more devastating manipulations using either the dull or the bladed side. I carry a Fox 478 daily so I focus on single edge karambit techniques. You can also carry the trainer as a nonlethal option when you don't need that much of a force multiplier but still want that advantage in the grapple.
I would be very polite to you in real life.
As we should always be to each other. Honestly, I really hope to never be confronted with a situation where it comes to having to take that training passed just pressure testing. You quickly learn that no one walks away from a knife fight without injury when you train all out.
Doug Mercaida is the one that introduced me to karambit then The Raid 2 made me fell in love to it more
Doug Marcaida is the man! If you're reading this Doug, let's collab!
I would like to see an analysis of the movie 'Maria' where the lead character uses Karambit as her main killing weapon. PRETTY PLEASE!!! 😂
Karambit is such a misunderstood weapon. It takes a lot of careful practice and training to know how to wield it properly (and safely for the user!). I'd actually love to see something with a push dagger. They're more like a supplement to hand combat like brass knuckles, but a bit spicier since they're not really used for typical knife strikes.
That's coming right up - keep your eyes peeled.
@@logan607 Oh boy!
Broken fingers barely hurt in the moment, more comidic than effective
Ohhhh man! This is the first time I've seen anyone talk about the fighting in this movie other than my dad and my friends! I'm stoked.
The Man From Nowhere is a classic Korean film. I highly recommend anyone reading this to watch the film.
"I start the quartering." Somehow that terrified me.
If it helps, I'm quite lazy and would probably stop halfway through.
Me personally, I learned about the karambit from playing Splinter Cell: Blacklist. But I fell in love with it from watching The Raid 2.
We need a next gen Splinter Cell asap. Homie Sam Fisher and his knife skills would look epic on the PS5 / X-Box Series X
@@ScenicFights Death Battle did Solid Snake vs Sam Fisher and it is their best episode.
@onecrusty taint oh I entirely agree, some of the match ups are total BS. But that particularly episode I thought was very great.
You haven't learned the Karambit! Watching movies and video games is not learning. Go to class.
@@johnanthony6765 I think he meant learned that the weapon existed.
I love to see stuffs like this as a practitioner of eskrima, more support from Philippines ❤️
Great respect from S.Korea, Such a beautiful break down man. Before I see this I had no idea about knife fighting skills, like Karambit flail, many possibilities and counter attacks from that knife duel scene. You've changed my perspective. Thank you.

Absolutely love these breakdowns! I've always intuitively enjoyed the quality of this fight scene, especially contrasting it with all the crappy knife scenes from hollywood, but hearing it being broken down by pros really brings to light how good it actually is. Keep up the good work!
love these fight scene breakdowns. great concept for a youtube series
Thank you! Let us know which other fight scene we should breakdown next!
@@ScenicFights it's a short one but i'd love to see a breakdown of the Bruce Lee vs Cliff Booth fight from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood!
6:36 It's really cool to see you show the technique right away as you explain it 😎
One of the greatest movies out of Korea.
I learned the “flail” technique from the PTK system, and I’m not really a fan. It’s cool to do during drills, but I really wouldn’t want to do that under pressure. The biggest advantage of a karambit is retention, and you’re potentially sacrificing that for a move that may or may not do significant damage.
I think that for the reach, I might. Not my go-to tool though.
I think the #4 attack could be useful in very few (almost no) situations. Drawing attention and breaking center. Risky, but I could see someone that good making it work.
Great video. Love how practical your approach is to knife fighting scenes. Thank you
Yes. I commented on the last one to do this scene! Glad to see you guys deliver! Awesome Video!
Awesome! Thank you again for the suggestions. We do our best to get to every comment.
I love all the fights in this movie. Thanks for the breakdown!
"Let's try it out". That line excites me
I totally agree that the bite manoeuver performed by cha makes way more sense than what seagal did, good analysis. Hope you"ll review the raid 2 soon
An excellent breakdown of one of the awesome movie fight scenes. Thanks, brothers. 😀👍
I think the shift away from technical perfection accurately reflects what can happen when we become too emotionally involved in the fight. Hear me out.
In the arc of the story, Ramrowan had just (in Ka's mind) destroyed the last remaining connection to the child by shooting the container with what he believed to be her eyes. With that context, it's easy to see him being distraught and enraged beyond the point of reason, judgment, or even his training.
Ramrowan, on the other hand, imagined himself to be the uncontested BEST martial artist/killer. That was how he defined himself. So when he witnessed the flawless opus of knife-fighting carnage that Ka enacted against a dozen (or so) henchmen, he saw someone legitimately better than him, and died inside a bit. He could very well have shot Ka, but instead shot the eyes to goad him into a fight. He HAD to fight him. He HAD to know he could beat him. This man was trying to take his place in the world. The uncontrolled opening lunge betrayed his desperation, fear, and rage.
Great analysis! Thanks for the awesome comment.
@@ScenicFights thank you guys for this excellent body of fight analysis! Absolutely LOVE the channel!
I agree, this scene is not as elaborate as the scene before. And I just realized it now from this breakdown. Thank you. Good job as always.
Thank you again Arief for supporting the channel!
From an entertainment standpoint, both scenes are still masterpieces and I recommend anyone reading this comment to really give this movie a chance asap. You won't regret it.
@@ScenicFights Yes this is still a masterpiece to me too. And the detail in your breakdown opening my eyes about what is really happening and what should've done in the situation. The film as a whole is done beautifully, and the fight scene choreo is one of the best. Love this film.
love these breakdowns, keep up the good work lads
An amazing break down guys, really detailed and clear. I didn't even like knife fights before this channel, but I appreciate them a lot more now knowing the strategy and techniques that go into them
Thank you Jason! Our goal with Logan's Knife Fight Scene Breakdown is to show the martial arts form of knife fighting, not to incite or encourage knife fighting. If anyone is reading thing this now, we encourage you to practice Pekiti Tirsia Kali, but if you find yourself in a knife fight, run! Regardless if you're a knife fighter or not.
Great breakdown
Especially the step back something so small you don’t notice because you’re watching the knife action, but it makes all the difference
Love ur explanations all the Bro! and just too good to see back with this new video, Yeah with final duel from The man from nowhere flim scene....

Another great video guys! But, I mean, obviously you should have awarded extra points for the all important ‘Death Blow Sensuality’ category. In fact, I’d rank Won Bin’s ‘bite and stab’ as second only to Keanu’s classic ‘stab a dude in the neck then consume his soul through passionate eye contact’ killing at the start of Wick’s Red Circle scene.

I have never seen anyone use the ring to actually make the karambit extend out and sort of whack the person. Interesting fighting style and I definitely have to look into that

established - in my opinion and observation - a feeling of awe earlier -on in the movie for the Man from Nowhere maybe making him not so in to fighting his best - Just a thought as I am not knowledgable or skilled in weapons training but consider this an important aspect of fighting - state of mind.

I am going to have to go back and re-watch this scene. I never thought that the high point of his first stroke was the beginning of a downward slash. I thought is was the end point of an upward cross body slash from the way Cha snaps his head back to avoid it and because he immediately follows it up with a similar stroke to Cha's side/midsection. Now I have to study the scene again to see if I was imagining things or if it was just a really was a fast camera angle cut to change the perspective from behind Cha to in front of to see his reaction to the attack. As for the number 4 attack. I think, in this case, the choreographer made this choice because of timing. Cha makes the swipe after his opponent is already fully extended and is recovering from the stroke in an attempt (I think) to slice the underside of his forearm as he pulls his arm back.
When he blocks with the knife you assume that Ramrowan came in with a straight punch, but if you slow it down, you can see he does not. He was attempting a cross body (face, neck, whatever) slice and Cha block with a similar, but opposite motion - so he would not have been in danger from the punch. It was more like they both threw a hook instead of a straight jab.
