Valens was a like a mini version of his brother Valentinian. Did alot of the same things as him, but admittedly with a much larger threat on his eastern & western frontiers. His major downfall was his pride & not waiting for any reinforcements. This disaster & the butterfly effects it caused for the next hundreds of years, makes Valens go from a pretty good Emperor, to a foolish & disastrous one. Which is unfortunate.

I don't like Kings and Generals anymore.
they cover modern history now and have consistently provided an extremely biased view of the Russia/ Ukraine conflict.
If you only watch Kings and Generals for updates on the conflict in Ukraine, then you will leave with the impression that Ukraine is dominating Russia.
But in reality, Russia is gaining more and more territory every day.
So it puts a really bad taste in my mouth how a channel known for their DECLARED unbiased takes on military conflicts pushing out pro-Ukrainian propaganda.
I actually kind of want Ukraine to win, but i don't appreciate how there is no unbiased source of information for the Russia Ukraine conflict.
Everyone is either biased in favor of Russia or biased in favor of Ukraine.

About the episode at Marcianople: It is perhaps feasible that Fritigern used the opportunity to rid himself of his friend Alavivus with the aid of the Romans. The Romans eliminate a hostile leader and put a (hopefully) more friendly one in the throne, Fritigern sells the idea to the Romans that he'll be pliable later. Saying this mostly because it would not have been the first time a dual-rulership was ended in a conspiracy between one of the rulers and their enemies.

As a fan of Rome/Byzantium these kind of videos are hard to watch. I usually read about these disasters once and move on.
However it's important to learn and analyze these battles and compare them. For instance it's important to note that after this battle Rome found it hard to regroup and make an effective resistance against invasions/raids like this one, while during punic wars they suffered much more disastrous defeats and still managed to comeback and win. It only shows the state the empire had fallen to.

There is a staggering 6 centuries between these to battles; roughly the time between today and the end of the medieval period. Evidently, very different societies. Where the vast majority of the army for the past 250 years no longer came from Italy. But instead , from Gaul and the East; demanding direct payments instead of spoils of war.

I would like to add that this battle had a profound effect on military tactics over the next few centuries. The fact that an outnumbered Barbarian army consisting largely of Heavy cavalry defeated Rome's legendary heavy infantry, created a new military doctrine that favored Heavy cavalry that would last for hundreds of years and leading to the creation of mounted knights in the middle ages, the details of the battle notwithstanding. The winds of change started here.

Its interesting to see the actual events that inspired the novel Legionary from Gordon Doherty. The novel takes a more personalized view from one of the legionaries on the ground on the events that lead up to this battle. Heartbreaking and tragic but good novel.

On the map there in the current territory of Romania, the city port to the Black Sea is not Tomi, but Tomis. I should know because I'm from that city, the current name is Constanța. You probably missed the letter when typing, because you can easily see all the other originally greek city names are ending with "s".

Great video. You have to make a correction though. At 25:52 min --> There were no catholic Christians at 378 AD. We have Catholic Christians from 1054 AD onwards after the Schism.

Catholic is Latin for universal, and that's exactly what the church in that time was and should be called.

I think something is missing at the end of the video, footnote #2 is missing at least one word and usually there are 3 footnotes. Anyway thank you for the great video.
