It just shows that technology didn't really progress until very recently. The medieval Knight armour was nothing new but just impracticable in a much larger ancient battlefield
Jaza what do you mean impracticable it was also very new. They had new styles to make the armor out of more layers of armor and it could protect a lot more and on a large battlefield armor is very important especially when just about the only thing you need to worry about would be a heavy blunt weapon or someone very skilled. The ability to make weapons and armor changed a lot from the time of Rome to the late medieval period. And if you think armor is heavy you would be correct but since it’s covering your entire body you are still able to move effectively. Especially during the high point of its use.
@@aiden2358 They have found segmented armour with multiple plates for added thickness and indications Roman plate may have been rolled. The clibinarii were supposedly invulnerable to bladed weapons and missiles but the tactic of units of clubmen was used to render them ineffective with blunt blows. This suggests the clibinarii armour may have approached the protection of later medieval knights.
A lot of that armour looks more like that Parthian Cataphract. The helmet however looks like it came straight out of the medieval period. Considering the time period of all of this I wouldn't be surprised if that was part of this get up, especially considering they killed Crassus.
As a martial artist (not in medieval weaponry although i do know how to fight with certain weapons) the provocator breastplate does seem to cover a substantial amount of space when you take his weapon in consideration, when you have a sword in one of your hands, that side of the body is basically completely covered by the sword, any attack could be deflected with nothing more than the turn of a wrist. In a fight you’re trying to look for openings, and constantly seeing an opening which is then covered by that annoying little breastplate each time would definitely piss the opponents off. And the provocator can fight knowing that that part of his body doesn’t need to be defended as much making him way more fearless. Thus i think it’s mostly for psychological defence and also a way to distract the enemy with anger.

The one greave of the "heavy" gladiator types was worn on the opposite leg to the shield, to protect the "sword leg" and not on the same side with the shield
Are you sure? Why, tho? The logical side is the shield side since you put that foot in front of you when covering the rest of the body behind the shield. The only things sticking up and down are your head and your lower leg. That´s why you use a helmet and a greave on that leg. A greave to protect a leg, and an entire side for that matter, that is completely open anyway is pointless.
@@barryward2128 You do realize that you don´t fight from behind a shield like in the movies, right? Right even in the way you are describing it happening you're going to be stabbing forward when you do that you going to end up stepping forward with your weapon arms leg which can then get hit by your opponent which is why you would put a greave on the off shield side
It's on the forward leg, guess which leg is gonna be standing up front in a stance that has you holding a shield. It is meant to protect you in the event an attack got under the shield. Same deal with shoulder and upper arm protection for attacks that get over the shield. Everything you're fronting up for the enemy should be more protected, since you got no choice in mobility there with it always being exposed up front, everything on the half of the shield side should basically be a wall, meanwhile your sword arm and leg stays tucked safely all the way in the back, so you get to time and expose your naked and mobile arm for a swift strike. The back leg rarely gets exposed since it's only there for control and stability, so it wouldn't really need any armour, it's not only a redundancy, it would be detrimental to weigh your control leg down when it moves a lot more than your front leg that mainly works as a pivot. Early period Hoplites and Roman units geared like this too when metal armour was rare and expensive. One side exposed and endures with armour, one side out of danger and strikes out with mobility.

I'm shocked how he doesn't mention not every gladiator fight was to the death!!!?? maybe for extra drama? In fact more often the loser was spared because gladiators weren't cheap/disposable as some movies might make you think.
The Saggitarius were not unpopular due to spectators being shot by accident...they were unpopular because they were boring. The gladiatorial spectacle was more akin to today's WWE pay per view matches than it would be to UFC fights. The gladiators were trained to fight with big, dramatic moves and were supposed to drag a fight on and keep it interesting for a long time, all while telling a story through the fight itself. Some historians have even suggested that they choreographed their fights to a certain degree to allow for key moves/moments to play out. Watching some dude shoot someone with a bow and arrow is just lame compared to what the other types of gladiators would do.
This was fantastic to watch. Thank you for doing so much research into this to provide an amazing entertaining and informative video! As a huge history fan this this was a beauty to watch. Keep it up, my friend.
Love your work! Really appreciate the graphics aswell! ... however. I think you'll find that the 'movement speed' of these heavier armoured gladiators would not have been as slow as you think! Have you ever seen fully armoured medieval knights full contact sparring? (RUclips) Not slow at all
While you're correct about medievel full plate, armor back then dodnt have the technology that medievel armor did, for instance the crupellarius was wearing extremely heavy armor, and they didn't have a harness like medievel plate armor did so the distribution of weight wasn't very good, and those helmets would have weighed a TON for the amount of metal needed for protection because the quality and type of metal wasn't the same(steel wasnt common) and why the majority of gladiators wore very little armor so they could maintain mobility and because the weight of the metal would have weighed alot from the thicknesses for enough to provide adequate protection

I think his breastplate is cool.
Mrs. Jessop is the GOAT , ong
Wow...just found this channel. As a historian with a weak spot for gladiators I really love this video. Can’t wait for your computer upgrade to see a full Colosseum Or maybe the chariot races at Circus Maximus? 🙃
10/10 my boy never skips quad day
This is a great documentary really informative and helpful, I’m trying to write a story set in Ancient Rome mostly centred around a young gladiatrix and a salve. So this has helped me get the details for her type of fighter to be just right
your channel is really cool
Great job with the images. Tank you for using the most Latin pronunciation possible instead of an english one
Sure, the colosseum looks huge, but when you see it in person it blows your mind. It’s so big they added elevators
This work is amazing. Please make a 3D animation of ancient Rome similar to the ancient Egypt video you made. Please! Thanks!
For sure! Next video is ancient Egypt
your channel deserves more! this is just amazing!
thank you for making such interesting content!! I can’t stop watching your videos I’m hooked they’re hella interesting 👀
Thanks, more on its way!
Wow loved it, extremely informative and the 3D CGI was really good too. I’m subscribing now!
There are also a few weapons not stated in this video: Falcata, Xiphos, Khopesh, Parazonium, Hasta and Spatha. Some armor like Galerus and Linthorax, and some shields like Caetra and Hoplon.
You may not have many views.I can tell you that the few that are here really appreciate the time and effort you've put into this video.Good job..I liked and subbed.
The passion this man has and his teaching skills are great. Thank you!
A lot of shade being thrown at the trident... but its essentially a spear, one of the BEST weapons throughout all of history. Range is an amazing thing.
WOW this is so amazing.
I'm glad that i've found this channel, i'm from Morocco by the way.
More videos please and Keep Going
More videos soon! Thanks Mohamed
This is stupidly good quality. Great job man subbed
This is an unbelievably fascinating and well made video. Thank you so much for the entertainment and education!
0:12 that one friend named steve
Dude you have done your research! Amazing! I've been to the Colosseum and it looks exactly like that! Amazing channel. Thank you so much!
The hit marker sound when he talks about the retarius throwing his net on the secutor and it slides off lol this video is superb
You cant just quickly show me scissor and then leave my man.
Great footage. Glad you were able to find the original footage.
Damn, imagina a game like for honor but with gladiators in the colosseum :D
Gamepass
I want to play as Gannicus because I want to bang as many bitches and have many wild orgies after my fights whilst getting drunk.
Many thanks for animated gladiators and perfect explaning
Now I know that sagitarius was a type of gladiator
Karl angelo Arcenas the gladiators were named after the constellation though
@@wesurftexasbrown Sigh. "Sagittarius " means 'Archer' in Latin so the gladiators who used archery were named archers and the constellation, which resembled an archer is named (wait for it) The Archer. Another valuable lesson on why no one should try to learn anything from randos posting horsecrap on RUclips comments section. And that goes for the 5 randos that gave a thumbs up to your nonsense.
@@FIREBRAND38 sigetarius in albanian mind archer like sika in albanian is thika mind knife sica thika in albanian langue anderstend evrithing like retarius
Amazing. Learned so much from this video
THIS IS SO GOOD!!!
Rise to Rome was pretty kick ass; it had both features a gladiator and the campaign was kick ass and your sword moves were wicked; think I’m gonna play it now
I'm shocked how he doesn't mention not every gladiator fight was to the death!!!?? maybe for extra drama? In fact more often the loser was spared because gladiators weren't cheap/disposable as some movies might make you think.
I know you only have a few vids but this channel is criminally undersubbed, your content is so good
They should make a game where you're a roman gladiator. Thatd be awesome.
Shadow of Rome. Was a good game.
Theres multiple games like that. Lmao
I want to play as Gannicus because I want to bang as many bitches and have many wild orgies after my fights whilst getting drunk.
@Thor Odinson and you sound like a do gooder twat
Ryse: Son of Rome multiplayer is what you want
One of my most favorite youtube channel...
Watching some dude shoot someone with a bow and arrow is just lame compared to what the other types of gladiators would do.
your channel is EVERYTHING
This was fantastic to watch. Thank you for doing so much research into this to provide an amazing entertaining and informative video! As a huge history fan this this was a beauty to watch. Keep it up, my friend.
Beautifully presented, good precise information & entertaining, thanks.
Also i compete in ACS, full plate armored fighting with actual(blunted) weapons, i like my good ole trusty poleaxe and mace lol
Absolutely awesome! Attention to detail and the great visuals make it one of the best informative videos I've watched on the Era and subject!
I think it goes without saying, the Crupellarius is the coolest
This helped me get through a project thank you so much
That one guy at 0:16 tho...
Let me solo her in rl
24:53 They literally just put the Wretched from Dark Souls in their arenas
Crupellarius : Gladiator that is a crusader plus a villager.
Stuff like this should be shown at the actual Colosseum, tourists should be able to get quality information like this when visiting.
