Perhaps to an extreme. He seemed somewhat insecure, hence the jokes that teeter on the edge of racist tropes to attempt to reduce him in stature. And I'm not one to pull that card frequently.

I dont think Eddie is arrogant at all. I think hes aware that Johnny Carson historically sets people up. I think Johnny liked Eddie but knew Eddie was really quick(witty) and unpredictable so he was careful to not get himself embarrassed on his own show. If you ask Eddie a dumb question he will give you a dumb answer. Hes still like that today.

It’s so interesting looking at this from today’s perspective. When Johnny asks what he spends his money on and makes suggestions you can see Eddie calls out Johnny for perceiving him as a stereotypical simple black male who likes shiny objects, even the using caricature accent that racist films used to give black people, all to drive home the point to Johnny. But he was smooth with it and had it flow through the conversation without much notice of the audience, all while being funny the whole time. Some people just have that kind of charisma

Eddie further described how his dad was murdered at just 28 years old:
“He (Eddie’s dad, Charles) was a victim of the Murphy charm chuckles. A woman stabbed my father. I never got all the logistics. It was supposed to be one of those crimes of passion: ‘If I can’t have you, then no one else will’ kind of deal. Someone said to me one day, ‘That’s why you don’t trust women.’ Get the fu*k outta here. What are you, a fu*%ing psychiatrist?” said Eddie.
“I don’t think the two have anything to do with each other. But I was really fu*%ed up about his death. It was really traumatic.”
Eddie also said, “I do have two fathers,” referring to his biological dad, Charles, and his stepfather, Vernon. EDDIE’S STEPFATHER DIED IN HIS ARMS…www.iloveoldschoolmusic.com/eddie-murphy-painfully-detailed-dad-brutally-killed-2/

But I think the hosts are trained to speak that way because Oprah is shady asf (underhanded) too.
Check out Oprah with Mariah Carey
And Wendy Williams With Whitney Houston.
I wouldn't say it's racism completely because I've witnessed Oprah and Wendy ask the same degrading type of questions.

Hmmm, interesting. I'm a real Tonight Show and Johnny Carson buff. Ask me anything about the show.
Surprisingly I didn't see this segment over the years, perhaps I did watch it like 10 or 20 years ago.
Anyway one thing really sticks out here. If you know anything about Johnny, then you would also pick up on it.
Johnny did it with many superstars. He would assert his position as the host of the show and not show any fear. He did it to Dean Martin and others too.
So in this segment he keeps nailing Eddie about the bike theft. It WAS Eddie who brought it up, mind you. Johnny wasn't racist at all, you guys are merely confused.

The only racist is racists like you who assume that if a White man asks a Black man those questions it has to be out of racist motives and that the White man is a racist. Because Black people would never, ever ask White people questions like that.... Only an ignorant racist thinks that way.

Watch how much different Ellen looks in her older days. This isn't Ellen. Ellen was a bit overweight had shoulder length hair and was absolutely not what we see today. So humble. I didn't think her stand up was very funny at all. But obviously someone in a high place did. Tbh I didn't like her much then and now I can't even sit through five minutes of her show. And then I found it how bad ,rude, and cruel she is to her employees and I didn't think I could dislike her more than I already had. But nope, seeing that she was such a phony and a very mean person made me just despise the woman. And I really hope after her treatment issues of her colleagues was known that her career is now dead and buried. She really didn't deserve what she had to begin with so please! See ya later!
