Unfortunately, as Booker T Washington said back in the days of Teddy Roosevelt's presidency, there are those who have made a living and a profession out of keeping greivances, real or imagined, front and center where blacks are concerned because they can make a living from doing so. They don't want things to improve because if they do, then they lose their wealth and income. Racial harmony exists to a greater degree than a lot of people think - but you'd not know it by watching the media because those types of stories don't sell and don't attract viewers.

As my vision blurs..something else comes into focus-a true sense of awe for the character of an era of human history that I feel so lucky to have been alive for and a palpable sense of loss-not only in the passing of these entertainment giants and of my my own family and friends..but also the loss of character and respect our nation had for itself and the world at large that seems to be deteriorating more with each passing day. I do.believe that the human race has made great strides in many ways..and in general we evolve to be a better species..but as I watched them all stand as the show ended..Ed and Johnny buttoning their sport oats and then Ed helping Bette with her overcoat and Richatd standing deferential to her as she got squared away....just wow. My hand reached out as if to hold onto something that has now evaporated. I can't thank you enough for this clip and the reverie it has left me in..just....thankyou.

No. Sam Kinnison way more talented. Sam was a Super funny comedian, a great guitar player, a very good piano player, and the no 1 comedian in the USA selling out every show in Vegas when sadly a drunk driver killed him. Sams album was also a hit. The first true rock and roll comedian.

Pryor was not perfect -- nobody is -- but he's still one of the best comedians there ever was. I'd rank him in at least my top 5. If you read anything about his childhood, it's amazing he turned out as well as he did. A lot of what he said in his act is still relevant today. I don't sense the BS you get with a lot of comics today but he was funny AND relevant. The guys today usually aren't either. I wouldn't say Pryor was a "family comic," either, but he had his own thing that he did better than anybody else.

As a grateful recovering addict & alcoholic, I can ttooooooootally relate to his meaning of him changing, along with his energies changing as well. If ever there was a proper context for the term "spiritual awakening," it's soon after having gotten sober. To me, the entire world was completely different, in every way. I was the real me, as Richard was becoming once again, the real him for the first time since before he started using. This episode was real!
That is an incredible trio of talent on that stage. Three absolute legends. And I love how she didn't sit there and not interact. It was brilliant having them all interact with one another.

This was a gem of an interview for me. I can remember this like it was yesterday ... I was 11 or 12 when Richard/Gleason filmed The Toy in my home city of Baton Rouge, LA. I got a chance to see him off set. Very gracious, humble and had time to talk to his fans. They filmed all over historic parts of the city (State Capitol, Goudchaux store, Indian Mound and on Scenic Hwy). The movie was awful but I enjoyed all of the various sights and being able to meet Richard in person as a kid. Good times. I miss Richard.
Loved Richard Pryor! Hysterically funny and so honest. Johnny Carson would double me over with some of his skits. I was surprised how funny Betty Davis was. Always loved her work.
My siblings and I were kids in the 80s. We absolutely loved Richard in superman 3. That movie gets such a bad rap but to us it's still gold to this day. Richard was great! Rip.
I actually had the good fortune to have met Mr. Pryor on three occasions. We both had been raised in the Peoria, Illinois area. But somehow, for some unknown reason, he was just a wee bit more humorous than any of the rest of us could have ever dreamed of being! Myself, along with a bunch of friends were blessed to have seen Mr. Pryor for his first ever appearance on TV via "The Ed Sullivan Show" , and although he was hilarious, it was nothing compared to his naughtier humor yet to come. Before he made it to Sullivan's show he did stand-up comedy in small clubs. Each night, before those earlier shows he use to shake like he had shell shock. During his very first stand up show, someone had the kindness to hold and rock Mr. Pryor in order to calm him before his set. In fact, it became a custom for someone to hold and rock him, as one does for a baby, until he calmed down a bit. You would never even know he was nervous at all when he was on stage, he was a great actor even then. There will never be another Richard Pryor! You are truly loved and missed old friend!
This episode rocks. Everyone is on-point and sharp, Johnny is witty and guides the conversation beautifully. At the end Johnny says, "Hey, this has been fun!" That goes for us watching, too

Anastasiah Romanova - Betty Davis was diagnosed with breast cancer as a result of her cigarette smoking, and had a mastectomy. Within two weeks of her surgery, she had four strokes and wound up with paralysis and slurred speech. She recovered partially from the paralysis. Even after all of this, she STILL SMOKED 100 cigarettes per day. Well, six years later the cancer came back and killed her. She still lived to be 81 years old. This show must have occurred just before her first cancer diagnosis. Both happened in 1983. So, keep smoking those cigarettes. I hope Betty Davis thought it was worth it.

Part of what made Carson's show great was those interactions on the couch between people who normally probably wouldn't be sitting together. She wasn't butting in on 'his time.' They were there, together, on a couch, like humans spending time together.

It is WEIRD...! I never knew they shared a Tonight Show spot together but I thought Davis complimented him Pryor on at least telling Johnny he was sick and couldn't make it the one time! And she did seem supportive of him when she admitted she felt uncomfortable watching her own work, too.

Richard Pryor was an absolute comedic genius! I always liked Carson as well his show was my favorite along with The Original Arsenio Hall show.

God; I miss the 1980's! Johnny Carson was legendary! Class personified! Richard Pryor was a masterpiece of a multi-talented comedian! Miss Davis was legendary! This is when network television was golden! As a kid growing up in the 1980's and living now in the present 2018-2019, I terribly miss the 1980's/1990's! The world/society, the human condition was way better before the horrible: Instagram/Twitter/Facebook and this whole disgusting "social crap media"! God bless the souls of every one that is in this classic episode/show with Johnny Carson.
Although known primarily for his comedy, he could also deliver an excellent dramatic performance. He had no limits to his talent.

Anastasiah Romanova - Betty Davis was diagnosed with breast cancer as a result of her cigarette smoking, and had a mastectomy. Within two weeks of her surgery, she had four strokes and wound up with paralysis and slurred speech. She recovered partially from the paralysis. Even after all of this, she STILL SMOKED 100 cigarettes per day. Well, six years later the cancer came back and killed her. She still lived to be 81 years old.
This show must have occurred just before her first cancer diagnosis. Both happened in 1983.
So, keep smoking those cigarettes. I hope Betty Davis thought it was worth it.

I found out recently that drinking too much alcohol is a second leading cause of cancer. My neighbor smoked cigarettes and drank frequently. Guess what he died of after giving his liver a double whammy over and over: Yep, liver cancer. It wasn't pretty.

Part of what made Carson's show great was those interactions on the couch between people who normally probably wouldn't be sitting together. She wasn't butting in on 'his time.' They were there, together, on a couch, like humans spending time together.

It is WEIRD...! I never knew they shared a Tonight Show spot together but I thought Davis complimented him Pryor on at least telling Johnny he was sick and couldn't make it the one time! And she did seem supportive of him when she admitted she felt uncomfortable watching her own work, too.
