  • How to fix an ugly lawn is a question a lot of home owners face. In this episode we apply Milorganite fertilizer to Alex's lawn. It's an organic fertilizer that releases slowly over a period of several weeks. Milorganite also contains iron as a micronutrient to produce a deep green lawn without creating unnecessary growth. This organic fertilizer is a core aspect of any lawn renovation project.

    Milorganite is an organic fertilizer that releases slowly over a period of several weeks. Milorganite also contains iron as a micronutrient to produce a deep green lawn without creating unnecessary growth.It's an amazing organic fertilizer solution that you should consider for your golf course lawn. It's a core aspect of my lawn care program that helps me maintain a green lawn even when mowing low. The only negative is the cost involved with application compared to synthetic fertilizers. Despite the cost, I still highly recommend it as an organic fertilizer option for your golf course lawn.
    As the series progresses, we'll document a process that YOU can follow to transform your ugly lawn to a golf course lawn. Using a slow release fertilizers is an important part of this process since it will help feed the lawn over time with less risk of damage to the turf. The iron iron micronutrient in milorganite will really help Alex renovate the look of his lawn by producing a deep green.
    Our goal is to improve his lawn over this season by implementing a serious lawn care program. We'll renovate his ugly lawn into a golf course lawn. My hope is that this series will be help to any home owners wanting to do the same thing with their lawn.
    As you continue to follow the series, you'll get lawn tips on how to get rid of weeds, top dress your lawn, and apply fertilizers to transform what you currently have to the lawn of your dreams. A huge part of having a golf course lawn is using the right mower. So expect to learn all about reel mowers and why you should consider one for your project. Stay tuned!

      @@jamesthorntoniii1785 this year hardly ever. We've been getting some kind of rain each week so no need to water really. Bermuda really doesn't need that much water. 1 - 1.5 inches once per week does the trick to keep it happy. Let me know if I can answer anything else. 😎

      Heya John. Milo or Milorganite is a organic fertilizer. I would follow the order in the videos if your a complete newbie. Let’s get the weeds under control, get a soil test done and use a quality fertilizer. Milo is great but if you want the bee’s knees, I’d go with Humic Max. golfcourselawn.store/products/country-club-16-0-8-humic-max-and-mesa®-by-lebanonturf-sgn-150

    Can you do some videos on St Augustine grass for beginners, getting rid of weeds, seed versus sod , also maintenance 🤔 . Should I use a 3 in 1?

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +2

      Hi KawaRider. I don't really have any St Augustine grass near me to do videos on unfortunately. The same rules apply with it though. A healthy lawn will make it easier for the grass to out compete the weeds for resources. As far as weed products, I really like Spectracide but it's not supposed to be used on Floratam St. Augustine. amzn.to/2Nztl3v If that's the type you have, we'd need to find something else. I'm not a fan of weed and feed type products because I like to minimize how much herbicide is introduced to my lawn. If you don't have a lot of weeds to deal with, I would simply pull them. That's the least damaging way to get rid of them. Sorry that I'm not more helpful on this one.

    • @KawaRider13

      @@RonHenry I have a lot of weeds way more than grass

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +2

      The Spectracide should help with the weeds but ulimately we need to get the lawn thicker so that it can naturally keep the weeds out. The herbicides just allow us to get things under control and buy us time.

    I recently overseeded with annual ryegrass and I think it severely hurt my Bermuda grass. Now I have gray dead ryegrass patches all over my lawn. I'm not even sure there's Bermuda underneath. Any advice? Also, why is mowing the lawn frequently important? For instance, every two days like Alex is doing?

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +1

      dinobutt1988: As time goes by, the rye grass should dye off completely and the Bermuda should come in. Something you can do to thin out the Rye and speed up Bermuda growing in is to verticut your lawn. Mowing frequency is important because it allows you remove the least amount of grass to preserve the height of cut you're after. The general rule is you don't want to remove more than 1/3 the height of your grass to avoid overstressing the lawn. As mowing heights go lower, 1/3 become a smaller and smaller number. That's why if you can only mow once per week then you probably need to keep your grass at around 1.5 inches. If you're mowing fairly low like Alex is (less than 1 inch) you have to mow more frequently to avoid removing too much.
      One way around this is to use a Plant Growth Regulator (PGR) to suppress vertical growth. If applied correctly, PGR will allow you to cut your mowing frequency in half. Let me know if I can help with anything else.

Would you suggest working on the weeds and getting the lawn back before trying to level out the lawn? I am kinda of confused as to what I should do next. Lawn is not safe to walk on as a lot of the holes are deep and have since grown grass or weeds.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 года назад +1

      Shane, there's no reason why you can't do both. Leveling the lawn and getting rid of weeds are independent of each other. If you have a warm season grass that's actively growing, now would be a good time to level the lawn since it should recover quickly assuming healthy soil. What kinds of weeds are you dealing with? Assuming your turf is a warm season grass like Bermuda, I've had great success with Spectracide: amzn.to/3fe3uKR It kills most common weeds without doing damage to the turf when applied at the specified rate.

      Hi User Tec. Are you cutting with a reel mower or rotary? I started mowing my lawn a week or so after overseeding but really, you want to make sure the seed is fairly well established for the best result. A reel mower is easier on the turf than a rotary so you can get away with mowing a bit sooner if you're using that type of mower. If you decide to mow early, start out mowing a touch higher than you usually would to ensure you don't scalp or tear the new seedlings out of the ground.
