    Finally someone talks about seven soldiers. I’ve been waiting for a long time.

    Phenomenal video. I found this because I just finished the book and feel how I do every time I finish a Morrison book: the insatiable need to study and talk about it to no end!

    Really great video, I was expecting to check it quickly but it grabbed me and I ended up watching the whole thing.
    A couple of extra notes (Spoilers ahead tho, if you want to discover all the connective threads yourself):
    -The process we see I, Spyder undertake at the beggining of the series is pretty much the behind the scenes of a remake / reboot of a character. That's what the Seven Unknown Men do, and that's why the Seven Soldiers are new versions or new spins of old and cuasi-forgotten DC characters. There's the idea that the Sheeda 'harvest' a culture when it's reached its peak and cannot advance further, so it makes sense that you combat them with characters that prove that you can still find new spins.
    -Due to them being from the future, the Sheeda know from their history that they're gonna be defeated for good by a group of seven in some point of the past; that's why they go around time trying to indirectly cause the dissolution of teams of seven (the Knights of the Broken Table, the original Newsboy Army, the JLA in the preamble to 7S in JLA: Classified 1-3); and it's also the reason the 7S are meant by the Seven Unknown Men from the get-go to never meet; so, they meet the rule of being a group of seven, but they never register in history as one, so the Sheeda don't know about them.
    -Aurakles isn't a Morrison creation, he first appeared back in Justice League of America #100 as 'Oracle', a mystical hooded figure (looking the way he does in the present era during 7S) giving cryptic leads to the JLA; and since that story was a JLA / JSA teamup about solving the mystery of what happened to the original Seven Soldiers, and also features the first apparition of Neh-Buh-Loh in his previous form of Nebula Man (and also of Boy Blue's sonic horn used to summon him), that story is a direct antecesor of Seven Soldiers; and it's written by Len Wein, named by Morrison to be the main inspiration for the series. Also, Aurakles isn't the literal father of Alix, she is her descendent.
    -The baby universe of Qwewq, that has shown up before in Morrison's JLA and All-Star Superman, is revealed to be the larval form of Nebula Man / Neh-Buh-Loh in the aforementioned JLA Classified 1-3.
    -It is heavily impied that several of the Seven Unknown Men, who live in a higher plane to the story, visit the story in the shape of different characters within it, in a way similar to the concept of fiction-suit that Morrison has used before; mainly Ali-Ka-Zoom, but also the ghost-form of Vigilante; and of course Zom is the shape taken by the evil Unknown Man / Terrible Time Tailor. The fact that he's a Tailor isn't coincidental to the concept of fiction-suits, as he crafts the 'suits' of who the original Newsboy Army are going to be, dooming them to a horrible future. In the same way, at the end, the Seven Unknown Men trap the Taylor in the 'suit' of Cyrus Gold, just before he's killed and eventually becomes Solomon Grundy, dooming him to be that mindless creature forever. Also, it's said that the cauldron of rebirth fell in Slaughter Swamp in some point of the past after Shining Knight's escape from Castle Revolving, which retroactively explains the origin of Solomon Grundy (or the post-crisis version, at least) and why he's Frankenstein-like; since both him and Frankenstein himself are technically grundy-men, like the ones in Limbo Town.

      RUclips does as youtube does, but I appreciate the support. Every comment, share, etc. helps teach RUclips people like stuff like this project. Honestly I had no idea if people would be or are into this thing either so I appreciate it in that regard too!

    Word! A spectacular series that fits nicely into Morrison's big DC story that has run since his Animal Man series! I wish DC would use more of these characters again - Frankenstein has been ok but not stellar under other writers (although Gotham City Monsters was great), but would love to see Manhattan Guardian again...

    Great work on this video! I love the way you transitioned to the final panel at the very end of your clip. I just finished my first pass through Seven Soldiers Omnibus and look forward to reading it a second time now that things make a bit more sense.

    THis was amazing! I was sooooo confused after reading the Mister Miracle sections. You are the man for making and sharing this. I am on to the death of the New Gods and then to Final Crisis Omnibus and so on. Thanks again! Great video and fun edits.

    • @FredMaverik
      @FredMaverik 2 года назад +1

      Death of the new Gods (and Countdown for that matter) aren't canon and don't really matter. Shoulda read Jack Kirby's Fourth World up to the end (it includes New Gods, Mr Miracle and the Hunger Dogs novel) and Morrison's JLA. Stuff like Animal-Man and Morrison's Batman saga are also good and tie in nicely.

    I happened upon volume 2 of 4 of the TPB at a used book store and took a flyer on it since I was familiar with Zatanna, Klarion and Guardian. After a quick flick through I had to start at the beginning. Currently I'm almost halfway through the whole story, I love the bonkers subway adventures of Guardia, and the eerie and odd Klarion adventures. The others have been really good too, but I'm surprised I'd never heard of this!

    I would want see this take place on the injustice universe. It would be nice to see a story like this one altered by the Injustice universe. They are currently doing a crossover with He-Man, so if that could work, this definitely could.

    There is no reason to believe that the Spear wasn't Sally Sonic.
    And, just an opinion, the underlying theme is actually rebooting. Everything in this story is a rebooted version of something else. The villains are endlessly mining the past.
    Though it is difficult to tell if Morrison is pro or anti reboot

    • @ComicIsland
      @ComicIsland  2 года назад

      He might be neutral towards it, exploring the pros and cons in stories like this. Things can get grimdark but we can also breathe new life into old ideas in a positive and constructive way, or something along those lines
