- So this was stressful. I reacted to a bunch of 'viral rat videos' some of them cute... others not as cute as they may initially seem. Please treat your animals with respect and don't put them in dangerous situations for a viral video!

Everyone needs to report that video of the ignorant asshole holding that poor, stressed out rat by its tail. Hopefully the video will be taken down so other people don't watch it and think it's worth copying. 🤦🏼♀️😡

Loads of people have flagged that video inc me. RUclips only takes down videos for the oddest of reasons but cruelty to a little animal means very little to them.

I think RUclips needs to remove animal pranks. I’ve seen so many where the animals are getting stressed or hurt. An animal isn’t there for your entertainment, it’s a living thing. People make me so mad. 😤

Star Salisbury thanks for the info. I try to report anything I see that is animal cruelty. I know in America, people don’t take it as seriously as they do in other countries, but I think that RUclips needs to take it seriously because mostly kids watch these videos and don’t understand that they are wrong. So sad that people who should know better make videos like this. 😭
A lot of videos I have seen a lot of the comments saying it’s funny or cute, when really all the animal people like me are saying the truth about how the animal is felling. (Etc... jumping in circles)

It is not only wicked but also illegal to abuse animals like that. You tube needs to ban any video that shows this.
Imagine the outrage if someone held a cat by its tail and chased their girlfriend around with it? This happens a lot with tarantulas too, imagine if someone filmed a small dog being chucked onto someone who was afraid of dogs?? Abysmal
Stay in Your Layne That imagery just made me angry and gave me a full blown mini heart attack. Especially the idea of someone chucking a tarantula at me, along with the thought that people would do that to any animal especially a rat that has done nothing wrong especially for clout.

I do not like the fact that because some people don’t know rats as the cute, lovable, intelligent creatures that they are, they think it’s ok to treat them like inanimate objects, throwing them around and abusing them. That’s not OK! I bet they wouldn’t do that to a puppy or a kitten, so why do it to a rat? If they looked into rats and at how amazing they are...

It’s sad that so many people don’t like certain pets because they don’t find it “cute”. Loads of people look at me like I’m crazy when I say I want rats, snakes and that I keep tarantulas/scorpions.
I have the exact same problem! A pet doesn’t have to be ‘cute’ to be loveable. That’s so cool that you have tarantulas and scorpions!
I remember being In petco and the employee was putting the rats back in their cage, and he kept picking them up by their tails and they kept grabbing the carrier they were in, I told him to actually pick them up and he actually did start picking them up normally, it's frustrating that chain stores like that don't teach their employees how to handle animals because they just don't care

S̷m̷O̷l̷ ̷L̷o̷S̷e̷R̷ If you work at a pet store, I think you should at least do basic research regarding the animals you’re working with. That responsibility goes for both the manager and the employees. Also, the tail thing should be common sense. Rat tails aren’t prehensile, they’re an extension of the spine and they’re very thin compared to the rest of the body. Same goes with cats and dogs. You wouldn’t pick a cat or a dog up by it’s tail, why would you pick up a rat that way?

Ambria Daniels-Dovolis rats are actually super clean and clean themselves really well. They shouldn’t be cleaned unless they’re SUPER dirty or they’re sick and haven’t been cleaning themselves and even then you can simply use a baby wipe.

Like they said, rats do not need baths unless it’s a special case. Rats will groom themselves as much as cats.
The only time I've ever bathed my rats was when they picked up rat lice from bedding and I had to put olive oil on their fur to drown the lice (in combination with oral medicine)
The only time my rats have been in water was when they went pea fishing 😂
I was recently babysitting two beautiful rats, and I also took them pea fishing!
Some rats love swimming though. The soap is the issue.

So many people with pets don't seem to understand basic body language of their animals. It is something you learn with more experience but it is important to know the warning signs otherwise how can you look after them if you don't recognise stress and fear and when they are ill?
so I live in the u.s, and sadly to say when I was in my local PetSmart, I saw someone buying a single rat, with a 20 gallon fish tank.. its sad to see that PetSmart can be so irresponsible and let people buy single rat, with fish tanks.
How can they know if they already had more rats or not

Most rats at the pet store are used as feeders.
Petsmart doesn’t mind selling their rats out as feeders so there really is no regulations on standards of care. At least where I live in Indiana.
I worked there many years ago, we weren't supposed to sell rats to people who we suspected might be buying them to use as feeders, but obviously people can lie and say it's for a pet, so there was never any way to be truly sure. I think they figure the price will stop most people looking for feeders but it obviously doesn't deter idiots who want to prank their wives. :/
Alex Ochs I bought my boy from a pet store that had horrible conditions all the poor feeders were skin and bones... they may have been meant to be eaten but seriously ppl take care of your animals especially if you work in a store... my boy is fat and healthy now
Aphrodite Saleris both of my girls are from a pet store as well, they had been kept in a tank, with hamsters when they ran out of room in the rat tanks (all glass with limited ventilation) and were very underweight :(

oh my god, the prank one made me want to DIE. I bet he just let the rat go after this OMG... this is why pet stores need to do background checks before selling ANY ANIMAL not just cats and dogs, and actually make their employees do research to work there, so that they can make sure that person knows EXACTLY how to care for that animal. For example, TELLING THE GUY THAT RATS NEED FRIENDS AND HOW TO HANDLE THEM SO YOU DONT BREAK THEIR SPINE!!! I just can't EVEN with stuff like this... who else wants to start a committee in America to raise animal care standards?
Edit: and this is why rats from pet stores don't live very long. Because IDIOTS like these return them. It makes me want to pick HIM up by his spine and shove HIM in somebody's face... God, I just can't....

Rats should not be allowed to be "sold" in pet shops but only in ratteries who take good care of them.
aw come ON! I was 12 when I got my rats, and when they didn't want me to hold them, I DIDN'T HOLD THEM. I gave them cheerios and left their door open, they were scared for a week or two, but now they are totally sassy rattos. They will push me around.. If my hand is in the way of food, they will bulldoze under it.

I am getting rats in a few months and I am only 12 too! These ADULTS do not even know how to treat animals with compassion!
I know, it's pathetic how grown adults talk about how childish kids are and how adults are so much more competent and then the just abuse an animal out of ignorance. Rats are such amazing and beautiful creatures and some people just find it hard to treat them with the bare minimum they deserve: Respect for their needs. I'm glad that your rats have grown used to you and are so sassy :)
I've seen the America's Got Talent lady in person! She's incredibly lovely, and the rats perform extremely well. It seems like she consistently works with them in odd environments, and they don't get bothered at all. They're true animal performers! Every time I've gone to see her show the crowd's always packed, so my family isn't the only group who wants to see our lovely rodent friends.
Also, she has the biceps of a beast. Not related to the rats, just needed to point that out.

Oh my god I'm genuinely in tears watching that evil person with the rat 😭💔 that poor baby is going to be traumatised and will likely need someone very highly experienced to take care of him 😭 I'm so upset over this :(
I know- she will now be so traumatised and suffering. I hope someone loving gives her a good home. I've reported this video to PETA and you tube.
I bought my rat at petco, I walked in and fell in love, then started watching your vids and was heartbroken and adopted another from a nearby breeder. Looking back, petco didn’t ask any questions or offer and education, the employee even picked her up by the tail to put her into the box. Definitely not getting one from a pet store again, but very happy to have my sweet Tink.
Thank you for being knowledgeable about whale eye and general body language of dogs. Most dog owners haven’t got a clue at all about dog body language. You might think your dog is cool with just about everything you do to him, even petting him. But once you read dog language well enough you find out that that’s just not always the case.
Then they'll say "the bite came out of nowhere!" No, you just don't understand what your dog is saying. A lot of people get pets for the clout as if they're accessories...same reason some people have children. That poor dog was so stressed.
So true! A lot of people think my dog is really "cute" and often take that as a permission to pet her for some reason but she really hates when people touch/get close to her head and very obviously shows that but then when she starts growling and snapping they suddenly blame me for "letting" them touch my dog. Like... You just went up to us and did that. I barely had time to react. Not my fault you can't read dog language.
But generally, the amount of people who don't know anything about animals baffles me.
The owners should learn how to read dogs body language. It’s their fault for not doing research. If you have good internet services then do your research.

Meows Make Music to say that they can never work out is very incorrect. I personally would never recommend keeping them together, unless you know what you’re doing... but I had a pair before that were amazing together up until one of them passed away (in her sleep! there was never any fighting or whatever)
Christina Kenward I know, but I still think no matter how experienced you are, the risk it still too much. And if not, some people are really confident after never owning a hamster, and reading one Wikipedia article that said it was possible, that they could keep two. I just think its either a risk, or a danger to the ignorant. But just to clarify, what I mean isn’t that it’s impossible, it’s that it shouldn’t be pointed out to be possible nearly as much as it is. I’m sure your hamsters lived an extremely happy life together, I just think some people think it’s a lot easier than it is. (: happy hammy!

The worst part it’s that if the rat would have bite him he would have probably hurt it more but not just that the audience probably don’t know this but if the rat did do that it would be for self defence so people would just make stuff up like “rats are aggressive” and stuff like that the rat wouldn’t do this if it was treated well if I were a rat I would want to have a good owner that takes care of me well with a good environment not treat me like that what the dude is doing is basically animal abuse

Ummm... 6:46 that's a Bull Terrier... there's a thing called "Ratting with Terriers", because Terriers are natural predators of things like... you know... RATS.
That dog is trying so hard to be good and repress his bred in instincts of ratting. He did good, in this video, but thats a very dangerous game to play with your pet rat.
Sad part is because it is a bull terrier, under the umbrella term “pit bull”, people, or the owners, would instantly go “Oh no a pit bull just snapped out of no where! It use to be such a good dog, they are ticking time bombs!”

LolitaxxDelena Dogs and cats are different. You can train a high prey drive animal not to hunt, I did it with my dog. But its not easy to train a cat. The cats, even young ones will still hunt mice and rats. I could correct my cats not to hurt a hamster or something. But it wont work. The only thing my cats dont bother hunting are the chickens.

I used to have a toothbrush that I used to brush my rats with. At one point, the girls stole it and brought it into one of their hides in the playpen. It unfortunately didn't survive the experience in any usable condition.
Whenever I see videos like these I automatically think of my boys in this situation, it hurts to think of how upset my babies would be and I could never put them in this position. The poor poor rats in some of these videos, it breaks my heart to even see rats alone or in a small cage, let alone in abuse situations like some of these. I really hope that all the people in this video learned from their mistakes or at least don’t own rats anymore. If I could, I’d take them all home and care for them myself :( 💗

when i got my first mice (Scarlett and Luna) my bf told me that when he asked to see them the employee at Petsmart picked them up by the tail and i was horrified as i had done research before wanting to get them. unfortunately, not everyone is as privileged to have a breeder in their town let alone afford one.
Hairless rats do need “baths” because of the grease build up. A small amount of water and allowing them to get out during scrubbing and no soap in the water! I have also rescued rats that need a bath because they are so coated and pee and poop that they can’t clean themselves so they will get a safe bath

Yes, in America pet stores will let you leave with one rat, one guinea pig etc. and its horrible!! But they also will let you leave with 2 hamsters and other animals that should not be kept together!!

Okay, just gonna say that I dont have rats or dogs, but I can tell how stressed they are in some of these videos. I feel SO BAD for that rat that that disgusting man was holding by the tip of her tail. Its sad, you can even here it squeak in fear at one point.
I don’t have any rats and I don’t think I would ever get a rat but I would NEVER even think about abusing any animal especially rats since they are just so smart!! It’s actually heartbreaking 🖤

I know people are mostly talking about the animal prank video, and I get that and it got me upset too, but the last one also deserves to be talked about more. Not only was the cat allowed in with rats, but it was holding a rat down and trying to bite it's throat, and the owner didn't intervene.
I can't tell if the cat was being malicious, but it was still holding down the rat and trying to bite it's throat, which could easily kill it, and the owner didn't decide that was enough and take the cat out, or just even think "maybe I made a mistake"

Omg I'm not even all the way through the video but the body language on that bull terrier is stressing me tf out. As a veterinary professional and dog behavior enthusiast, I agree with you. That dog isn't being gentle. Freezing is a reaction to fear, and some people think that's better than growling or barking, but it isn't. At the end of the day, fear is fear and no matter how the dog expresses it, there is still a huge risk for them to bite. This is such an unfair situation to put the dog or the rat in 😔

I work at PetSmart and I just want to say that they do not allow the employees to refuse sale of an animal to someone unless they are positive it will end up dying. We also are not allowed to force them to buy two of any animal even though most need to be bought in pairs. It is very frustrating especially when you know the customer has no idea how to care for the animal they just purchased. Even more frustrating when they don't even listen to you when you try and tell them about the animal they are getting.
I can't say that PetSmart employees are all good because there are always bad eggs, but I do my best for the animals that end up there.
Most of these videos are pretty cute but the prank one made me cry and give my eats treats 🥺
I'm sure it's been said here before , but the tail is connected to the spinal cord so grabbing it incorrectly and too many sudden jerks can sever nerves and lead to death.

what people need to realise is that many small rodents are susceptible to sudden death or compromised immune system simply from the stress of being startled. that rat could have easily died after he took it back to the shop.

That rat prank made my jaw drop. Like, seriously, I think anyone with common sense or brain cells would AT LEAST think it’s NOT a good idea to pick a rat up by it’s tail without even being told it is a bad idea. I didn’t even need to be told it was a bad idea to pick the rat up by the tail, because I already knew that it would be a bad idea & probably stressful. Which it turned out I was correct. I was honestly scared for the poor rat as much as it was scared for itself.

that “prank” video was so disturbing to watch especially as a rat owner :( i can assume that they didnt even keep her and i wonder if the rattie was okay in the end and given back to the pet store 🥺

I absolutely love emi ! She educated so much with mice I upgraded my cage upgraded my bedding { I also did more research after obviously} I hope she sees this
As i was younger, i hold my rats by theyr tails, because a friend who had rats, told me that it is ok to do it. After some weeks, i read that it harms them. I was shooked and stop doing it immidiatly. I feel bad for harmed them for so long.
Ive 4 rats since 4 weeks and i will never ever do it again. 😭

I know this was posted a while ago and this was probably said but the animals that get returned to petsmart usually don't get put back on the shelf. they assume something is wrong with it. poor little guy never got a chance. literally made me cry cause it looked just like the rat I have now but when I got her as a baby. Thinking that it could've been my little guy really hurts.

I saw another prank video. It wasn't as bad as the one in this video, but still horrible. He dumped a tank filled with 4 or 5 rats on top of his girlfriend, then she screams and scares the rats
Oh god, that video of the “prank” made me tear up. Who can treat an animal like that!? It’s just terrible! That poor rat was scared for its life and for good reason. Those people were such ignorant A-holes.
I feel like the main problem with these videos is giving people the wrong impression about rats and what is ok and not ok to do with them.
My cats have brought home rats the same size as them. I would NEVER subject a small animal to something like this. Rats SHOULD be scared of cats. It's natural. Cats are hunters,
The guy that dangled the poor rat by it's tail hurt my heart. It sickens me how people act. Obviously that girl was scared, and even threatened to punch the rat. I'm not okay with that!!! How is anyone even okay with this?
I am a first time pet rat owner, I have 2 female rats that are amazing, and they also have a massive 4 level rat house with tons of toys and hiding, and hammocks.
My fiance used to own rat's growing up, and I've always been scared of them from all the negative hype that's been surrounded by rat's. My fiance told me to trust him, and we decided to get one. Immediately I was proven wrong about the stigma of them. Our first rat was Umi and sadly he got sick right away and didn't make it. However, after he passed we decided to get a female. She's an amazing silvermane rat and looks like she's wearing a sweater. Sweetest thing EVER!!!! We got her by herself, and named her Polly. I need to add we got her by herself knowing we were getting another, we just needed to wait for the other female to be weaned. A couple weeks after Polly, we got the other female that's little younger and named her Pippa. Pippa has red eye's, so she can't see as well as Polly can. Polly took on the big sister role and helps Pippa out with everything. If we get Polly out she wants back in the cage with Pippa. Pippa will also search the cage for Polly. so we get them out at the same time, and both are chill as long as they know the other isn't left in the cage. They've never fought with each other, and even sleep together. Not too mention they are both smart as heck!!!
Polly started sneezing when we got Pippa, so I keep a humidifier next to the cage at night to help. It seems to be doing the job as Polly hardly sneezes now, but will every now and again. Any ideas how this would come on tho? I don't want either of my rat girl's getting sick. I do progress tho, I just want the best for both of them.

Also, to my knowledge, cat saliva contains bacterias that can kill animals such as rodents and birds. So that raises even more concern for those clips of cats/rats interacting.

I can’t believe the one “prank”. How can people treat rats this way. I recently saw another “rat prank” when two guys dumped a bucket of rats into a room with a woman who had a rat phobia. She was crying and screaming and the two guys were just laughing. On top of that they were also holding the rats by their tails and at one point he even dropped one. I’m literally crying. How can people be this ignorant.
I had to skip the "prank" video. I saw that tiny baby rat and just couldn't watch. I really hope it got adopted by a loving home who knew how to care for it properly
