Hi! I'm going to do an IKEA run next week because I need to cordon off part of my pet room! I've tried looking on their website and also Amazon for a shoe rack but I can't find anything suitable. Do you know the exact name of what you are using for a cordon and where you got them from? If there are any other suggestions for stuff I can get the ratties from IKEA don't hesitate to let me know! Many thanks 😄
I have parakeets, so I figured this out real quick. I now just do a general sweep of the entire pet store to see if I can cross any items from the intended animal to unintended animals. Using wild bird feeders for my indoor birds is so much easier for me to keep track of. Using dome cat litter boxes for my chickens keeps them from eating their own eggs and wasting less nesting material. And using ferret and bird toys for my rats is cheaper and gives me more variety.
When I had rats, I just threw a blanket down on my bed or a couch and let them run around. It's a pretty easy area to let them play on since they can't get into much trouble, and you can put a bunch of boxes and toys up there for playing, and a small travel cage for a litter box. My rattie boys loved playing on my bed, and it was also a good for cuddles too.
i don't have a free roam area for my two rats yet. For now i just brought them to my bed and let them run around there. This video gave me tons of good ideas!

Rat Lover5454 the pigeon weirdo gave some good advice about finding out what your friend doesn’t like and then educating them. worrmm Thank you for the information! It’s actually a guy, and he is 30 years older than me... he’s older and my family has been renting his house for 14 years.. I tried to talk to him but he started talking about how he’s going to kill my rats if I get them and he is putting rat traps around the house.. so I’m waiting for a little to talk to him again because I’m a little scared to bring it up again. But rats make me really happy and I’m still going to school and with the whole Covid-19 thing right now I just really want to have two new best friends that I can hang out with all day. I’m going to have a good amount of free time and working at my my vet and it’s just the perfect time.
I have found that my rats most love the simplest things like cardboard boxes. I really think that all the little houses and stuff are great for them too, but they are more for the benefit of the owners because they look nicer. I have my rats in my art/craft room, which is constantly a mess, so I don’t let them free roam on the floor there. I have the Critter Nation double cage for them, and I placed it inside a closet and took the doors off the closet. When I open the top doors the rats can safely come and go from the cage to the top of the cage and to the shelf in the closet. The cage fits perfectly under the shelf with about three inches between the two, and the rats LOVE to hang out in that space between the cage and the closet shelf, I think because they feel safe and secure in the relatively tight (height-wise) but spacious (area-wise) space. The space on the closet shelf is like a play space, with lots of things to climb on and in/out of, but we still need to add more things. We plan to bolt some interesting shelves and staircases to the walls inside that closet area. We have a lot of hammocks and hanging tunnels that don’t all fit in the cage, so we will figure out how to hang them inside the closet too. I LOVE the idea of designing little spaces made from popsicle sticks!! I will try that! :) :) :)
Girl keep up the amazing work! I love my mice and rats when i had them but i never found a youtube channel that i cared to watch that discussed them. Thank you for the top notch info and content
Well to be fair my parents and I didn’t have a dedicated room for the rats at first. And we didn’t have time to do everyone because we were seeing the breeders so soon
You should deffinetly have an area for playing, if you don't have a lot of space, then you can throw some blankets and toys on a couch or bed for them to play on.
@@thrillhous6407 you dont have to have a separate room for them just an area where they can free roam. And yeah so what lol either do everything before you go the the breeder or wait with getting them until everything is ready. It's not like you absolutely had to get them that quickly. Either wait with going to a breeder or hurry up getting everything ready that's not an excuse lol
The toilet was a failure 😂 I had to add a second in the back left so now they have two. They do go in them but just for good measure they like to poop in the opposite corners 🙄
I was really looking forward to this video of yours, it's a really fun topic, thanks for reviewing and giving tips! (: I'm not owning rats yet for a while but I'm slowly getting ready for them, researching, planning and buying stuff, and I just ordered like 300 ping pong balls for a ball pit recently and now you mentioned they don't use yours that much haha noo! I hope they will like it, maybe if I'll scatter around some food in it. :D
Lol hopefully your future rats enjoy the ball pit. Someone else commented saying their girls LOVE their ball pit. You could also add some ping pong balls to their pea fishing dish, to make it a little challenging for them to get to the peas. (I wouldn't do this on their first pea fishing experience; wait for them to be comfortable and confident first)
@@MyPerfectMischief Ohh haha that's relieving to hear, thanks, still got a chance then! :D Also thanks for the tip about the level up pea fishing, didn't think about that!
this inspired me to upgrade my rats free roam area. i used to just let them walk around in my room but now i added boxes and i asked my parents to spare carton coffee cans so i can use them as tunnels. i used to do that in our last house, but since we moved i kinda stopped
my rat just died and I don’t know what to do. I knew his quality of life would decrease because of no longer having a cagemate (she passed away in January) but i just wasn’t expecting it to happen so soon. I loved watching your content to prepare for owning rats, I miss them so dearly.
I lost my pair both on the same day, Oct 2nd. I miss them so much! One of the rats I owned that passed in the one is my profile picture, her name is Storm, but I nickednamed her Stormwormy, and my albino rat, Frostywosty. Who mainly goes by Frostbite, or Frost for short. Rest in peace babies!
I have a big walk in closet, and I made that the free roam area, it has a huge rat castle made of wood and boxes, the rest of the closet is for them to run in (which is covered in blankets so they don't do their business on the carpet), getting the rats soon and hope they like it
Early hi I love watching your account to learn about rats because I am going to be getting some soon I have a question are dumbo rats good and do you own that kind?
I'm getting my first boys in a week and am unable to give them a full room but my things don't take up much room and im going to make playpen for them! I've been collecting/making stuff for it from when i decided to get rats, and im so excited!
I love watching your reacting to your viewers’ rat free roam areas and cages videos. I learned a lot from them and got some new ideas, but I’ve always been wondering one thing. It’s about dig boxes. If you and your viewers use wood shavings and/or soil, how often do you change? I guess it depends on frequency/length of time used by numbers of rats, but I’d like to know. Because it takes a lot of wood shavings/soil to fill the box deep enough for your rats to enjoy and if you have to change weekly, I don’t think I can offer (afford) such box to my rats all the time. I have 3 rattie boys.
If it’s a deep base cage I do a deep clean and change the shavings once a month to 6 weeks and turn it every week. Soil in a dig box only really when it starts to smell
@@Emiology I didn’t expect to get a reply from you bc it was a video from two years ago. And the reply was so quick! Thank you! Now I have better understanding of dig box care 😌 From the east coast of USA ❤🐀❤
We have got our rats out every day since we got them, but we are staying at my aunt’s house for about 5/6 days in a few weeks, and we are leaving the rats for my grandma to looks after. She will not be able to get them out however; do you think it will be too bad to leave them for a week without a playtime? I am a bit worried, but I think it will be fine because it is only one week of their entire life.
I am not an expert but i don’t think it’s perfect for them. But remember, you can’t be perfect every time! You could try to add a wheel in their cage and hope they use it (some don’t like wheels), you can also add some new toys so they have something new to play with. You can also expand a little (add a little cage with a tunnel) and in there you decorate as if it was a playground for them, you know? Hope this helped a little :)
I am a pet rat breeder. Honestly, they'll be fine. If they don't have one already, consider putting a dig box in their cage for them, also provide your grandma with a few new exciting toys for her to switch out every day for them to explore and have some mental enrichment. And when you guys are reunited, an extra long play time is in order! 😁
charleise w thank you, that’s a great idea to put different toys in their cage every day, I will also get them a wheel, they may not like it, but if they do then it’ll be a bit of exercise for them :)
My mom used to free roam our rats on the sofa for playtime, we even had one trained to go from his cage down the hall to the couch (supervised of course) they always stayed on the couch and our cats never bothered them (they were well fed indoor only cats) The only thing I suggest though if you free roam rats on furniture or a bed put a blanket over it to protect it from their pee/poo.
I share one room (student apartment) with my two boys so I had to implement their toys in my room in a way it doesn't look too messy. A lot of their stuff is hiding under my bed, sofa, and table for example. Since their cage is on a high bureau I had to build a tower of cartoon boxes so they could move up and down as they want. For that reason, they also have a water bowl, food ball, and toilet also hidden in my room xD
This gives me an idea on how I would lime to have one as when we move house next year I can get my dad to build me one in our room ready for my rats ☺️
I'm going to get big rats soon. I already set up their cage, it's a two-story ferret cage. I'm planning on getting two male rats, but I don't know how to set up my room as a bit of a free roam space, especially since I already have a free roam bunny in my room. The rest of the rats that I have in my room are just feeder rats, and not to mention the mice! But they aren't in very good enclosures right now. The small rats are in an aquarium. The only other option I had was to put them in something smaller.
my auntie has rats and she lets them walk around her house and sit on the couch with her/go under the couch but shes not sure if she should get a specific rat room/area with toys and stuff? (she cant use the internet well so i was googling for her and i found this haha)
I got four rats. I started with three in a double critter nation but I found out one of them is a girl so I went to the pet shop (one that didn’t support breeding mills) and got another girl, split the double critter nation in half, and split them up by gender. They are adorable! The girls are named Rosie and Daisy, and the boys are named Churro and Remy. I haven’t free roamed them yet though. 😅
Another idea: cut up lots of pieces of fleece and put it in a mesh free standing laundry basket. My rats love to get in there and climb around, making burrows. I hide treats in the fabric for them to find.
I’ve pondered a few times about the feasibility of making a full rat room as their main enclosure. I’m sure it would need a crazy amount of rat-proofing to keep them from chewing through the walls or getting out through vents or something 😅 Probably not a practical goal
I built my babies a big play area out of heavy duty cardboard boxes and duct tape. And they have tons of fun stuff to play with. I put them in for an hour a day and sit with them in here too. They use me as a climbing frame 😂 looking for more ideas to make fun toys for them!
I've had my rats for a while. I used to have them in the walk in shower but they are much bigger now. And all three, is wow! So, I'm really trying to find some things to add to my new play pen I'm making, I need a few more boxes. The carbord ones are much cheaper as long as you can make sure they cant escape !
Hi em! I love your videos so much and I’m getting 2 rats in October and I’m looking for the cage now. Do you think the prevue pet products feisty ferret cage is suitable with adjustments? ❤️🐁🐀
For anyone who doesn’t have the space for a free roam aria, I take min into the bathroom and let them loose when ever I shower or have to poop lol bathrooms are Usually the safest and easiest to clean up after
One day a bunch of small animal RUclipsrs need to come together and create a shop where they teach you proper care and treat their small animals right😅 if only it was that easy....
I just got a 16 week old rescue rat and she is petrified of new things and people and my older, socialized rats are so confused why she won’t come out for play time
My cages are on the floor so they can climb back in when they need to go. I have a few cages they can go in and out of. I don't block my bed but.....yeah..... I'm definitely going to need to do that. 🤣They seem to be more interested in climbing on me more than any other toy in the room. I'm not complaining because I love their company and love kisses😊
My rat has the whole house to roam and he's really never in his cage. But he's the last remaining one at almost 3 years old. He usually ends up in the laundry basket for a nap.
I’m getting two male rats soon and I already have there cage set up but I’ve never had rats before and I’ve done most of my research here because the videos are entertaining and very helpful. I was stuck on my free roam area so this was really helpful and I would love some more advice! I’m getting them from a breeder, and I was wondering if they would try to run away, during free roam, and if it would scare them to have dogs near by.
My favorite moment with my albino rats was when porridge stole a whole cracker from me and tried to pull into a tunnel it looked so silly as it was such a big cracker compared to him
My rats are so difficult in the sense that they eat everything!! Any zip tie or shower curtain hook I put in they attack within moments and the IKEA tie holders are a wonderful idea.. If they last more than a week with my boys! They're cute though so I can forgive them.
Yay !! I was so scared to free roam my mice in my room because I thought I’d never find them again lol !! Today I allowed to them run around for the first time !! I did “ free roam “ them before but only in a small cage 70x50 cm and I don’t think they enjoyed it anymore ! Thank you for the video !!
Hello, Emiology, I was wondering for rat free roams if a bathroom would work. would it be too small for four boys? any ideas on how to rat-proof a room and how to clean anything they pee/poo on?
What would you recommend when you rats are kept in a very large room? We currently have a pen for my 4 males but I want bigger space. They also can now jump over it if they want since they have gotten bigger (as Oliver has demonstrated) However I would lose them in the room extremely quick (it’s a bonus room type thing). I don’t really know what to do. Possibly rat proof a smaller room in my house?
Yeah if you have a smaller room you could rat proof it. If you have a bathroom that doesn’t have any gaps you could carry them into there or if you have a hallway that you can shut all the doors to that works too

YAYY IM IN ITT!
Girl keep up the amazing work! I love my mice and rats when i had them but i never found a youtube channel that i cared to watch that discussed them. Thank you for the top notch info and content
It’s the best seeing them run around my room 😂
Fr
I recently got my rats, so I haven’t gotten around to making a free roam area. Should I work on that.
yes you should, it’s important they get to roam outside their cage
you should have had everything for them ready before you get the animal. But yes you should do it asap if you still haven't
Either wait with going to a breeder or hurry up getting everything ready that's not an excuse lol
yess i've been waiting 4 this one :)
The toilet was a failure 😂 I had to add a second in the back left so now they have two. They do go in them but just for good measure they like to poop in the opposite corners 🙄
The garfield house is from b&m, it's £4 :)
I was really looking forward to this video of yours, it's a really fun topic, thanks for reviewing and giving tips! (:
I'm not owning rats yet for a while but I'm slowly getting ready for them, researching, planning and buying stuff, and I just ordered like 300 ping pong balls for a ball pit recently and now you mentioned they don't use yours that much haha noo!
Emi you’ve got to do a mouse version of this next!
my rat just died and I don’t know what to do. I knew his quality of life would decrease because of no longer having a cagemate (she passed away in January) but i just wasn’t expecting it to happen so soon. I loved watching your content to prepare for owning rats, I miss them so dearly.
aw,, Im so sorry! my rat has a tumor and im worried about his cagemate, im so sorry! rip little rats
Rest in peace..
@@1ovely.spr1te37 Sorry for commenting so many times. But I wish your rats luck. Are they doing well atm?
Okay, I misread this as ‘Reacting to my Viewers’ Rat-Free Roaming Areas’ so I thought you were reacting to their living rooms or something! 😂
I love your channel!!!
Love the videos!! If you didn’t make these I wouldn’t know anything about rats! 💖
i used to watch this wayyyyyyy before i owned rats and this might be one reason i got them cause i watched your vids
I have a big walk in closet, and I made that the free roam area, it has a huge rat castle made of wood and boxes, the rest of the closet is for them to run in (which is covered in blankets so they don't do their business on the carpet), getting the rats soon and hope they like it
WOWWWW THAT ONE AT 12:21 IS SOOOOO COOL!!!!
I’m getting a play pen with a zippible lid ( they can still breath lol) and now I’m so exited to decorate!
Early hi I love watching your account to learn about rats because I am going to be getting some soon I have a question are dumbo rats good and do you own that kind?
Dumbo is just the ear type it doesn’t change anything else about the rat ☺️
The pigeon Weirdo I don’t have any shelters near me and I am not getting them from any pet stores I am getting them from a breeder
I learned a lot from them and got some new ideas, but I’ve always been wondering
one thing. It’s about dig boxes. If you and your viewers use wood shavings and/or
soil, how often do you change? I guess it depends on frequency/length of time used
by numbers of rats, but I’d like to know. Because it takes a lot of wood shavings/soil
to fill the box deep enough for your rats to enjoy and if you have to change weekly,
I don’t think I can offer (afford) such box to my rats all the time.
Thank you!
Now I have better understanding of dig box care 😌 From the east coast of USA ❤🐀❤

yesss i’ve been missing these type of videos :)))
Tirill Haarberg thank you for the advice! I will look into getting some new toys; I build some things for them as well 😊
charleise w thank you, that’s a great idea to put different toys in their cage every day, I will also get them a wheel, they may not like it, but if they do then it’ll be a bit of exercise for them :)
@@leisewri where are you located and how much are your rats ?
I clicked so fast this is the first time in early xx
Thank you so much for making Another video
I use my bath for a free roam area. I put towels on the bottom put some toys and hides and a dig box
Thanks so much for the advice I am going to the vet tomorrow ❤
So many cool free roam areas!
my auntie has rats and she lets them walk around her house and sit on the couch with her/go under the couch but shes not sure if she should get a specific rat room/area with toys and stuff? (she cant use the internet well so i was googling for her and i found this haha)
I don’t have rats but these look similar to my hamsters freeroam area 😂
These are such cute ideas!
The Garfield house, is a cat house with a cardboard scratch matt, you can buy them cheap from b&m =3
I LOVE YOU EMI
The one dislike is from a cat that couldn't get past one of the freeroam walls
I’ve pondered a few times about the feasibility of making a full rat room as their main enclosure. I’m sure it would need a crazy amount of rat-proofing to keep them from chewing through the walls or getting out through vents or something 😅 Probably not a practical goal
I built my babies a big play area out of heavy duty cardboard boxes and duct tape. And they have tons of fun stuff to play with. I put them in for an hour a day and sit with them in here too. They use me as a climbing frame 😂 looking for more ideas to make fun toys for them!

This is really helpful! I let them run around a rat proof room but didnt know what to leave them to do....
I clicked on the video right as i saw it 😻 I needed some ideas for free roaming areas for my two new baby girls
With all the furniture in my room I think my rats would have a fun exploring 😂
Great video!!
I built my rats a giant maze castle out of a big moving box and pringle can and shipping boxes of all kinds
OMG I LOVE UR VIDS
(Making sure that they’re safe first)
Bird ladders and toys are great for rats!
Eeee I’ve been waiting for a new video!!! When is the Mice Maze video coming out? I keep seeing you talking about it on Instagram. No rush💕😌
Omg guys !!!! One of my girls literally manage to climb up my prom dress that I had hanging from my wall !! I looked everywhere for her ugh !!!
@@mir8469 did u ever find her
i have been waiting ages for your your new video i was wondering if rats can eat hay?
They can have dust extracted hay as enrichment but they don’t really eat it
Thank you so much xx
So excited to get rats
When will you make another reacting to our rat cages video? I really want to send in a picture of my rats cage (:
What was the name of the shoe storage? The one for the rats that couldn’t free roam on the floor. I looked on Amazon but can’t seem to find it.
I would like to know too, I just did the same thing with Amazon!
The plastic wall things? I have these they're called SONGMICS Guinea pig playpen
If you're still looking 😂
Hello, Emiology, I was wondering for rat free roams if a bathroom would work. would it be too small for four boys? any ideas on how to rat-proof a room and how to clean anything they pee/poo on?
On your website it’s only showing me your new items and I can t figure out how to look at all of your items please can u help me x
Go on the menu - store - pet supplies
Thank you x
What would you recommend when you rats are kept in a very large room? We currently have a pen for my 4 males but I want bigger space. They also can now jump over it if they want since they have gotten bigger (as Oliver has demonstrated) However I would lose them in the room extremely quick (it’s a bonus room type thing). I don’t really know what to do. Possibly rat proof a smaller room in my house?
Yeah if you have a smaller room you could rat proof it. If you have a bathroom that doesn’t have any gaps you could carry them into there or if you have a hallway that you can shut all the doors to that works too
