  • Why do I only play JRPGs? That’s a question I get a lot, so today I wanted to tell my JRPG story and explain what got me into the genre of games. From my love of JRPGs, from what started me on to JRPGs, to my Souls game experience, to modern game trends that push me away, I’m going to go into the entire background of my JRPG origins. Remember these are all just my opinions and if you enjoy a game I may talk about here, just remember I want you to keep enjoying it! :) #jrpg #jrpgs #rpg

Perhaps the worst thing about modern multiplayer live-service games is the amount of time they want you to spend with them. Like, Dragon Quest 7 may take 100+ hours to finish, but at least it actually ends. Being able to check that "box" is very satisfying to me.
I do play a wide variety of RPGs, and a smattering of other genres, but JRPGs are my one true gaming love, and have been ever since I first played Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy on the NES.

    • @SweisSenpai

Dragon Warrior and FF wow! You are an OG :) and yes I feel the same about having that box being checked when finally completing a game. So much time they want u on those live service games like we have lives haha

Great video! I have noticed a similar trend with myself too. I use to play a lot of western games back in my teenage years, but as I get older I have really only been playing JRPGs and soulslike games. I occasionally will play some multiplayer game with my brother, since that is all he plays, but otherwise I find enjoyment in the crazy adventures and fun gameplay JRPGs offer. They feel like comfort food to me. Kingdom Hearts 2 is also one of my all time favorite games.

Awesome video bro great story too, and some great points you made here definitely agree with you, JRPGS have so much variety some may have your typical cliche's but no JRPG experience is the same from characters, worlds, stories and gameplay everything feels like a fresh experience when you go to play a new game. JRPGS are a genre that will always make me feel comfort and happiness the journey's you go on the characters you meet along the way the amazing well told stories it's really a genre that gives you a sense of fulfilment and never feels dull or repetitive and especially in today's climate of games feeling rushed or unfinished JRPGS have just had this formula that works you get your game as the finished product and is actually worth your time and money!

Great video man! I’ve been playing JRPGs since ‘92. Dragon Warrior (NES) was my first but the one-two punch that captured me entirely was Lunar (Sega CD) and then Final Fantasy III (SNES). I was obsessed with these two games and I still adore them.
I’ve been on a JRPG kick of late. Playing through FF1 and FFVI via the Pixel Remaster and Chained Echoes, which is fantastic. Just bought Persona 4 Golden this week. I’ve never played Persona at all so I’m excited.
Big Ups! Thank you for your work here.
Edit: Other JRPGs that made an impact on me are (chronologically): Chrono Trigger, Suikoden, FFVII and VIII, Vagrant Story, and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

Cool to share your story. Funny to see you enjoy Shinig Resonance. It's not really popular series, mostly known for Tony's waifus but I liked them. JRPGs are my favorite genre as well even though I do play others. I am fortunate that I started with golden age with games such as Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Suikoden etc., but also many great ones today like Persona 5, Trails of or Dragon Quest 11. Loved the themes, the story, characters and sense of jurney.

This was a great video. 99% of the games I play are jrpgs. lol As far as my first jrpg, I guess it was Pokemon Yellow, but the first jrpg that really pulled me into the genre was Final Fantasy X. I still say that Final Fantasy X is my favorite game of all time because of the special place it has in my heart and how many times I have replayed it over the years, but I have played so many other great jrpgs over the years, most recently getting into the Trails series. There's just something about them that sets them apart from other game genres for me. The well crafted stories, the unlikely cast of characters that end up saving the world together, the incredible music. I can go on. I should actually make my own video on this topic one of these days. lol But anyway man, great video. I really enjoyed listening to your perspective and found it interesting how you didn't really get into jrpgs until the late PS3 era.

What got me into JRPG was having a 3DS and a lot of time kill in between clases back in college. I wanted portable games with long and good stories (Also with similar gamepaly to pokemon) to go through. The 3ds made that possible for me, there was no turning back after i finished DQVIII

I'm trying to get back into jrpgs. My favorites that I have played in most recent years have been kingdom hearts 2 and ys viii. I do know I need to play turn based jrpgs, but the last one I genuinely enjoyed was the original ffvii in 2015.
I feel my time enjoying jrpgs has passed, and it makes me sad. Jrpg players have it so good, they have the most variety out of any genres I've ever seen. I do agree with your complaints about modern Sony games and most western aaa games. There's only a few I can tolerate.

Excellent way to put it, i been mostly playing japanese games for the past few gens mostly because western games no longer offer that fun over the top stylish combo heavy hack n slash gameplay, while most action jrpgs have some type of variety that makes them very enjoyable, if the character action genre is dormant, i can make do with action jrpgs that try to keep that style of real time gameplay alive

I used to play triple a games but the micro transaction dlc bs got too much. I remember playing Prince of Persia (the cell shaded one) and the ending was real bad and totally not satisfying. Your video helps me realize that I like games where I can build up my character and enjoy a storyline at the same time. As for Souls-like, the only one I played is Elden Ring and can't say I liked it very much. Maybe this type of storytelling just isn't for me, but I got bored with it shortly after defeating Godrick the Grafted (~15 hours). Trust me more and more people started to feel like the OP here, for me Starfield was the last push that made me go and play the games which I hated with a passion and let me be clear I don't hate the games themselves but I hate how grindy they are, I hate how in some games there are places you can't go to because you are low lvl, I hate how in many action games they force you to do things like go fishing or farming or playing dating sims when it is supposed to be an auction or adventure game but now I'm only people games like this and the last push for me was when in Starfield I was doing a dangerous mission for a group of people where my character was putting his life on the line for this group only for the boss lady started yelling at my character when he was trying to warn her to not underestimate the enemy leader, and it's only get worse when some western game studios like Amazing garbage aka amazon gaming or other western companies censor games just because they think everyone is sick in the mind like they are.
So yea because of this modern BS in games I went back and bought older handhelds like PSP, 3DS, DSI, PS Vita, GBA since so many JRPGs in those consoles.

@@SweisSenpai Yea, it is sad how older games feel better than the newer ones specially when we have more advanced technologies now that game devs did not have in the past.
The thing is, if there is a legit good reason for 95% of the censorships I wouldn't mind it, but it all comes down to some pervert who is sick in the head censoring games and think everyone is like them.
I play games with my kid, she is 10 she like using short characters and she like dressing up her characters to make them cute and in our games we make our characters be like us a dad and his daughter but with all the censoring BS my kid completely lost interest because of this BS.

My first JRPG would be Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest 1) on the NES and Final Fantasy 1.
Souls games are just really the old school action adventure game style of old games from old retro games from nes,snes,genesis,ps1,n64,GameCube,ps2 era.
Modern western games are just lame nowadays with microtransactions and no polish.

Big respect for mentioning playstation. This company is a shadow of former self with how bland and tiresome their games have become. There's no variety, gameplay is absolute barebones with little to none interesting story and characters but the worst thing by far in forceful inclusion of censorship and agenda. It got especially personal for me since they announced closure of Japan studio.

@@SweisSenpai I don't really like RPGs much (Especially MMORPGS) but there was this flash game called "EpicBattleFantasy" which sucked me in and I had been playing all the games made by that creator since.
Outside that anomaly, I prefer the action combat like Ninja Gaiden or Metal gear revengence, without the boring stats and levels.
When I play an RPGs i often replay it multiple times bc I always mess up the stat allocation when I level up, so like in dragon age 2 I end up losing with regular enemies taking 0.00001 damage or somthing.
"EpicBattleFantasy" is turn based, but doesn't have the boring stat stuff (Except damage numbers). Instead you collect materials for better items and weapons; you can increase the power of abilities on level up.
It uses an elemental based combat system, where enemies are weak to certain elements.
The game likes to mix the enemy types up, so if you summoned ice showers for AOE damage, it may do some damage but heal the other enemies. Enemies even use elemental powers that heal themselves, but hurt you.
