Sometimes I find that when I finally get to a certain game in my backlog, I end up playing it at the right time to really impact me. There have been games where if I played them when they came out, I probably wouldn't have appreciated them as much.
I can definitely relate to that. I almost always choose what game to play based on my mood instead of what's next in line. And sometimes when I don't feel like the game hits at the right time, I put it back down to be picked up again later. Thank you for your comment! :)
@@jerryjohn3815It's hard to say without knowing what games you have played, what kind of games you are into, and whether you are only interested in recent games- or you don't mind playing older generation games. You can't go wrong with scrolling through the best rated games on metacritic, and seeing what takes your fancy. It might be worth searching for hidden gems/underrated games too. Or just thinking about games that you've played and love and wouldn't mind revisiting. With that said, here are some random recommendations: Batman: Arkham Knight. Prey. Metro: Last Light. Doom/Doom Eternal. DMC 5. Portal 2. Spec Ops: The Line. Bioshock Infinite. Ori: Blind Forest/Will of the Wisps. Sonic Mania. Streets of Rage 4. Inside/Limbo.
@StormyMuGG it's why Resident Evil 4 is one of my favorite games. I went through a breakup while playing it and it helped me deal with the emotional distress I was dealing with
Backlog is like a list of boring tasks that you force yourself to do at some point in your life, when in reality games are supposed to bring you joy, fun and relaxation during your free time. Don't fall into the trap of committing to games, or you'll go crazy.
if i don't commit to game i will never finish any, i've finished about 10 games in my entire life and played hundreds, these days i play one story game and one comp game at a time and don't stop unless i finish it or don't like it
It’s not that the games are boring. If a game is a boring, remove it from your backlog. It’s just that you aren’t engaged with games that you aren’t playing and see getting into them as a chore. But when you finally do, you have fun
it's boring if you make it boring. Just treat it as a list of games you're interested in, not something you force yourself to do it. Same thing with books and movies that you have on your "backlog". Check them out when you want and have a good time, no reason to treat it like an obligation.
the way i would say it is “to defeat the back log you have to accept the fact that you can’t defeat it”, playing a game till you’re satisfied is probably the best course of action, great video keep up the good work
You're absolutely right. Gaming is just a hobby and the backlog basically is just a list of games we want to play. So instead of stressing out over all of the games we 'need' to play eventually, why not just enjoy the one we're playing right now :)
i can relate to this but with music. i have so many albums that i want to listen to but i ended up listening to the same ones over and over again. this year i finally found a way to expand my tastes and listen to new stuff while listening to old stuff as well and it has been a blast
That’s great! I like how you compare this topic to music, that is very interesting. I am also trying out new kind of games (like tactical RPG) and having a great time! It’s nice to find new stuff you like :)
I think backlog also starts growing because we (a group at least) is trying to keep up with a mass producing industry. So far I've been able to focus on 2 games right now, without losing my focus just by telling myself: "The other games aren't going anywhere." It takes a bit to have that mindset, but I feel so far it's rather helpful.
That’s great, we just need to relax a little bit at the same time I wanna play all the games that people say are really good because I want to experience them myself. Thanks for your comment! :)
I liked the points you made in this video. They really do impact the gaming experience, especially for those of us who hide on games we’re familiar with because of the anxiety that comes with too much backlog. I also think that there might be some pressure people face when it comes to wanting to go into a game completely blind, since by the time they get around to playing the game further down their ‘library’ (love the word you used there), there’s already so much content and spoilers that you can’t really have a true blind experience anymore. Awesome video, as always 💖
There definitely is some sort of pressure when now highly enticipated games release to play them as fast as possible to avoid spoilers. It's a point I missed discussing in this video, but can centainly cause stress on people! Thank you Taliah!
Me and my friend started a backlog agreement. You can’t buy a new game until you beaten 5. Getting the platinum or all achievements counts as beating 2 games.
That’s an interesting idea! It’s always good to have someone else monitor your (buying) behaviour. Makes it way easier to keep up with the agreement! :)
I’ve found that I actually worry about my backlog fairly often, and it kinda sucks. I’ll be playing a game and i’m wondering how much longer I have left so I can finish it and move on to the next one. But games are supposed to be fun! I recently played Alan Wake 2 (amazing game btw) and took my time; made me realise that I should play what I enjoy and not worry about what I haven’t played yet (although I do use Backloggd for a general idea of what games i’m interested in) I guess my personal advice to people is just to play what you enjoy, play at your own pace, and don’t force yourself through something if you’re not enjoying it. I’m glad you made a video about this, it’s cool to see someone talking about it :)
Thank you for this comment! It can be easy to get hung up on the idea of needing to finish all of the games you want to play as quickly as possible. But the only person holding you to that is you. We all need to relax more and just play games because we want to play games :)
I work and I’m a student so I don’t have a lot of time anymore to play games but I started trimming down my backlog and wow it has made gaming so much more enjoyable again. My main method was just asking myself: do I want to play this game because I’ve heard it’s good, or do I want to play it because I simply want to play it? This helped me cut off a lot of games that I felt pressured to play because people were praising them. If I had more free time I’d probably be open to trying more games but now I don’t really feel pressured to constantly be playing certain games. My backlog has worked best when it’s small and achievable
I can definitely agree with that! Whenever there is a new game that I am looking forward to playing, it’s super easy to pick up and play. Thank you for your comment! :)
After watching Daryl Talks Games’ videos about completing his backlog, I made an excel sheet with an estimated completion time attached. I think this works for me because it gives me an idea what I’m committing to and also I use it to monitor the games I own/ want to purchase and help chose what I’ll play next. The key for me is telling myself that if I don’t like it, it can be dropped or revisited etc. I think mindset approaching the backlog is key as the back log to me is a catalogue or list of what I want to play, if I own it already and how long I will be playing it. I don’t view it as a list I need to complete as the list is ever expanding and evolving.
Yes I loved his videos on it as well! It’s very easy to get into the mindset of “I NEED to play these games”, whilst we all started the backlog with a “I WANT to play these games” idea in mind. Thank you for your comment! :)
I just got ps plus extra and my gaming backlog essentially doubled in a day. What you said about changing the name to "library" instead, really will help me realise I don't NEED to clear this list. It will always be an ever growing list of experiences. Some of which, I will never get the chance to actally experience. My advice: don't start a game with the mindset of finishing it. If you're not enjoying something part way in, move on. There are so many potentially better experiences on that list
That’s a good mindset to have! When I don’t like a game I move on from it, but then have a difficult time choosing the next game to play because I feel that the choice weighs heavier. But at the end of the day gaming is just a fun hobby and we need to keep it that way! :)
@@RuubzyI understand, but games that aren't a hell ya, are a no. And if they are a No.... they don't go on the backlog at all. You accept that you will never play it and move on. But that doesnt mean you will never play it, you might get a craving one day that is a hell ya. I honestly think the back log should only be 2 or 3 games max. There defenitly a level of acceptance and grief with this method. Also i don't follow this adivce :P but i try too.
@@zedrico8577 lol, yeah to be fair. There are a lot of games in my library, but I often only really want to play somewhere between 1 to 5 games. The others are on the list in case I don’t know what to play at all so that I don’t forget
My trick for it is to record your gameplay on RUclips or Twitch, if you're close to dropping the game, your viewers will try to convince you to get through it. This trick also lets you keep up with the story for a big game like an RPG. Also tell your friends that you won't be available for playing multiplayer games because you'll be playing a real game.
Rare moment I click a youtube recc. Something that's been helping me, as my backlog stretches across decades of releases and hardware; is I've formed a top 10 list of games I'd like to focus on. New releases do tend to get that sort of VIP treatment you mentioned. Doing this however has helped me greatly and I've finished at least 4 games over the past week this way.
Daaaamn I like cognitively reframing so many things, but never stopped to reframe my backlog as a library LOL thanks that helps a lot. I've come to accept that despite putting 43 games on my backlog of games I actually wanna play, that I'll probably only beat one of the three that I'm tackling right now because they are what I'm truly feeling atm.
Gaming backlogs are a strange beast! Sometimes I feel like I want to play a game to get it off the backlog, or just to make the number smaller (I'm also sitting around 100+ if that makes you feel better). I've tried so many "fun" ways of working through it all - themed months, writing reviews, etc. - but none of them really make it seem less daunting. Yesterday I picked up a game on a whim that's been in my backlog since release (Islets). Initially I thought, "oh this is an indie game, I'll be able to clear it out quickly" but after an hour my attitude changed to "oh this game is f***ing amazing, I want to take my time with it." And I think about it all the time that I'm not playing it! It's nice to have that feeling about a game again and to be sort of "consumed" by the excitement of it rather than seeing it as a chore. PS: I love the music choices in this video, I recognised Toothless Dance (I forgot the actual name) and the hangout music from Persona 4 :)
All you said is absolutely correct. Strangely enough though, this sounds like common sense to me. Though that might be because I'm on the older side. So I guess there simply are things in life you simple come to accept as you grow older. Respect that you came to this realization at such a young age.
That’s good! Personally I know when I don’t really like a game, but keep clinging on to it for just a little longer because “what if I’m wrong”. Only to not really play any games for a little while until I start up something new haha
I got a PS5 a year ago and was the first console I had since the PS2 so I've been doing a lot of 'catching up'. I eventually found myself not knowing what to play with all the options at my disposal so I decided to play my games according to release dates from the oldest to the latest games. That has helped me and feels like I've got a bit of order.
what i do now is, i don't buy anything at all even if it calls me a little bit and/or is on sale, i only buy if i want to play it right then and there, and if i'm not sure if i'm going to like it or not even if i'm very interested in it, i'll probably play the demo if it has one or crack it to play it as a 'demo', and then depending on if I like it or not I buy it and continue playing or I remove it from my wishlist (if even I do this 'demo' play and I'm still not sure if I like it, I'll probably keep playing it cracked and if I like it I'll buy it even if I have already played the game).
I'm such an optimizer, I didn't realize that gaming lists and backlog is a common problem lol I have lists for everything. I can't help it so what helped for me was categorizing them in terms of priorities of when I want to play, keeping track of what I am playing, what I own and will play, what I want to buy (mainly to keep an eye out on used ones). As I have 15 unplayed games piled up, some of which I'm playing the previous one of, I realize I need to stay focused and present and remember this is for fun. Cyberpunk is the only game I'm currently playing I feel like I can really immerse, enjoy, walk around, pick up side quests when I feel like it and want to stretch out. Maybe the fact that it's so rich and open world is part of it. I calendar gaming into my schedule (I calendar everything to stay focused on errands, work, social, and capture things and be more realistic with how much time I'm putting into things). I am playing 4 different games on rotation and focusing on those until I get bored. I do look at my list more than I should to re-categorize, so that might be something I do less of. I wanted to play the Yakuza series then got overwhelmed with all the versions so instead of doing all of them resolved to play the 7 and then infinite wealth and that's it. I won't have time to go through all of them nor will I. I think I should also self-discipline and stop watching these gaming channels showing me what's coming up when I'm catching up on all games since I didn't have a console since the PS3 so I have a lot of PS4 games to catch up on, which lucky for me, are often remastered and given free as an upgrade. Woot!
Well making a list for everything isn’t necessary a bad thing! But once gaming becomes more of a task instead of a hobby, it can put you in some sort of a negative mindset from time to time. Thank you so much for your comment! I also tried my hand at the Yakuza series, played a couple of hours of Like a Dragon but never really got invested in it. I keep hearing that the games are great so I hope you’ll have a good time with them :)
Wow! I never get a cross niche of my two favorite hobbies-gaming and reading. And you are very right. My 400+ games is a game collection and my several thousand books is a library😅
I have more of a book backlog than game backlog lol. I promised myself I won't buy any more games or books until I finish the ones I have right now but to be fair I only have 10 games for my ps5 in comparison to between 100-200 books
I feel kind of a similar way as you, maybe I should call it a collection over a "backlog". Maybe the reason why I never quit gaming to begin with was because I always had something to try out and play, and I have been doing it for so long that I don't know how to stop. My only issue is that I have a game addiction where I have to beat game every 2-3 days or else I will feel withdrawal of some kind, which is why I don't play long gmaes that much.
For me, calling it a gaming library instead of the backlog eventually helped to relieve some stress around finishing the games. I just needed a bit of time to get the right mentality to actually see my backlog as the collection it is. I hope it can help with the withdrawal feeling as well! :)
@@Ruubzy I can't go more than 3 days without beating a game, I have been doing it since 2018. And I have probably beaten hundreds of titles of because of it but at the same time this should be for fun.
Ok, so I'm a patient gamer, I can wait years, sometimes even decades lol, after a game is released as long as I can play it at some point. I have PS4, PC, Xbox 360, PS2+PS1+PSP emulator games, other online games and my wishlist games. I made a backlogg to list which games I'm progressing right now and to get done now whenever I can play games because I don't want to leave them on hold, forget what's going on and forget the controls too. And I find no obligation to play all the games in my backlogg anytime soon, because most of them are free (emulator games) or I got at huge discounted prices (like Arkham Collection got it for around £8 when it was supposed to be £40-60) using the PS app wishlist notifications. I don't feel the need to play them all any time soon, unless I've already started them. But I do eventually want to play them all.
Same here. That's why I'm putting off getting a PS5/Series X (well one of the reasons)- because I already have so many games still to play on PS4/Xbox One. Which is good because in a couple of years the price will probably be lower, and there will be more exclusives to actually justify spending that much money in the first place.
I just crunch down to handful of genre and just replay the series and only dabble on new games that peak my interest. FPS games campaign is my guilty pleasure that I rather play over watch movies that I already watched. Basically rotation of CoD, NFS, AC, Toei Warriors, BF.
Gave Pseudoregalia the vip treatment recently and having a lot of fun even as a person who never touched platformers, i think it's gonna be hard to beat that one. Hat in Time is next on the list.
I’ve never heard of Pseudoregalia, I’ll look that one up to maybe put on the list hehe. A Hat in Time I’ve played before, personally I couldn’t get into it much, but loads of people love it so I hope you find it amazing!
That’s a good way not to get burnt out! Most often I find it difficult to stop playing a game in order to play something else, even when I don’t really want to play that game anymore. But gaming is supposed to be fun so I gotta play what I want to play more! :)
@@Ruubzy lately I've been playing an hour or two of one game and then an hour or two of another game each day. Usually stick to two games and depending on the game length I'll do it for about a week with say something like midnight Suns and then first person shooter will usually go for about a week as well. The weekend is where I usually fully immerse myself in one of the larger video games that are out.
Years ago I've bought maybe 15-20 games on Steam, because they were on sale. Then I've played maybe one of them. Then some of them got better remastered versions, so the ones I've bought were useless to me. So I've learned to buy games only one-by-one, only ones that I really want to play at the moment. Which is couple games per year.
i used to try to finish a game once i started it even if i end up not liking it but i more recently have been able to get rid of the urge to finish games i dont like so i think that makes the backlog less big and i get to move on to good games
That’s a very important decision to make. I used to think like that as well but that way I’d just get into slumps all the time, not wanting to play. Now at least I can just move on whenever I feel like playing something else (not right now though, I’m currently deep into Persona 3 Reload lol)
@@HurkaTheGuard well if i have put a decent amount of time into a game and i find i have not liked anything about it and its a chore to play thats when i know its time to drop it and move on to something i enjoy
I would prefer to come to that point where I have no more backlog. I bought plenty of games that turned out they weren't good for me, even though they are considered good games by the general public. So they will stay in the backlog but I don't really wanna play them anymore, and it just makes me feel like I wasted my money.
That’s understandable. Recently I’ve figured out that I like certain genres more than others, so I try to focus more on those games. If there is a game I’d really want to try out I’ll give it a shot but I’m less likely to put every popular game on the list haha
Personally I've made great strides in "beating my backlog" over the last 2 years & writing down or tracking what games I beat has really helped feel good about it... Even if most have been new releases I was excited about & less retro stuff that I want to get to. It's also helped that I focus on beating the main story for most games & ignore any meaningless or filler side content. So for example FF16, I beat all side missions & hunts which helped flesh out the world's story & I'd highly recommend doing, but for Diablo 4 I skipped side quest dialog & just completed them for rewards while watching the cinematics & listening to main story dialog... Then there's Exoprimal, one of my most enjoyed games of the year surprisingly. However I've best the game finally after 33 hours of online matches with friends & I couldn't tell you the first thing about the story, I skipped every cutscenes & cinematic I could... While listening to music over the in-game cutscenes that are unskippable. I'm just not playing it for it's throw away story, it's fun shooting dinos with friends in a Dynasty Warriors style gameplay against another team or sometimes with them. Also I consider a "Backlog" to be "future fun I plan to have" & changing the meaning helped me not feel stressed about it. Lastly, I look for any reason for me to NOT buy a new game because I'm a sucker for co-op games & I end up buying a lot of those by default.
Haha that's a great look on the backlog! I try to do the same myself. I see my library more like some sort of wishlist nowadays. Games I'd like to play, IF I get the change. But if not. There have been awesome moment I've already had in gaming which I cherish. Also, with FF16, personally I found that a lot of the side quest were just simple fetch quest. Compared to like FF7 Remake, the side quest were lacking a little bit in my opinion. I would have loved to see a bit more personality from the people Clive conversed with. But overall I really enjoyed it :)
@@Ruubzy I agree with the side quests, at least on the initial ones but by the time I got to the end of the game & the last batch of side quests they made it feels like additional main story context.
I have an awful backlog of video games on different systems. I did consolidate the games into the minimum amount of systems and I got rid of most of my old consoles... I still have hundreds of games to go through and I also have PS Plus Premium and rn I'm going through the Premium library and trying out and playing games and then I'll go back down to PS Extra. I organise my games based on time priorities atm because of PS Premium... so I've found how long the games take to play and am playing the shortest games first... I also allow myself to stop playing a game after 30m-1hr. I used to force myself to finish games that I didn't like and I now realise that I can try games and if I don't like them, I don't have to play them. I also have a book backlog, thankfully I think it's smaller than my video game backlog... but also I visit my local library and borrow books from there as well. And the worst part is that I only have roughly 2 hours a day to spend on reading and gaming... the rest of the time I'm busy with working, spending time with my spouse, helping my kids with their homework and spending time with them (they also read and play video games), and attempting to help my spouse keep up the house so it doesn't look like a tornado (kids, lol) went through our house.
Yeah gaming is a really fun hobby to have. But sometimes when we want to play a lot of games we tend to put them all on a list and then try to cross them off. But that way it can turn into a chore, especially when you don’t really like a game you thought you would like. Generally speaking a backlog is made with the right intentions, but can really make gaming less enjoyable. Thank you for your comment! :)
people should stop treating games like a job and rather something enjoyable, if you feel like playing a certain game, play it, less is often more the only game i had growing up was minecraft and that was all i needed because i innovated and tried new things, new challenges, got creative. The same can be applied to other games. A common example is Pokemon, while simple in nature people have changed the game in challenge runs, nuzlockes, catching shinys or even mods, the possibilites are only limited to your imagination
Yeah for real, I love playing games which is why I want to play a lot of them. But if you get stressed while playing games then it’s too much. People don’t need to finish 50 games a year :)
My biggest issue is feeling forced to slog through a game I'm not enjoying just because it's the first in a franchise. Sometimes I just want to play a specific game. I used to be able to do that when I was younger and ignorant of the overall gaming community and their opinions. However nowadays it feels like I'm playing games wrong if I don't play a franchise in order or every single game. An example is dead space. I really want to play dead space 2. However I have to play dead space 1 first. Everytime I've tried I've gotten 3-5 chapters in, stop for whatever reason and take forever to come back to it. Restart and basically never make it out of the first half and just end up not enjoying the game. I'd like to just move on to dead space 2 but I know I have to play the first game because it's what you're supposed to do.
I have a backlog but I don't really get guilty over my backlog or giving some games the VIP treatment. I just use my backlog to keep track of my games and maybe counterintuitively eliminate that decision paralysis. Before I set up my backlog I would have times where I wouldn't know what to play. Now if I'm stuck like that I can look at my backlog and see all the games available to me and make a logical decision based on that.
That’s really good! I think for a lot of people this is the way they want to use the backlog, but after adding more and more games it might get a bit overwhelming. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)
The backlog never really worked for me I always just play what I feel like looking at a list and trying to pick a game normally leaves me uninterested in the game, It feels forced in a way. Its weird how motivations and interest work for games at least for me. But yeah I have no guilt of playing multiplayer games or replaying games so i'm happy with just leaving games on there for years normally get cheaper too if you haven't already bought it :)
Yeah I get that! It can be difficult looking at the list not knowing what to play, and then end up playing nothing at all because you can’t choose one. Thanks for your thoughts! :)
The problem is we always buy games then never even installing it just putting it straight to backlog. Specially for the games that are on sale we just bought them and never even playing them.
Yes I am guilty of this one, especially now that I have subscriptions as well I really try to only buy games I’m 100% sure I want to play. And hope they don’t get added to PS Plus one month after haha
I used to overthink it like this. It’s fuckin video games bro, just play them. You don’t owe a game completion, and you also don’t owe every game in your library a fair shake. They exist to serve and entertain YOU.
You are very true! But sometimes I feel a little sad when a game didn’t live up to the expectations I had for it. And then it’s gets a bit harder to pick the next game. But overall, yeah, they’re just games lol
For a short period of time I tried to play multiple story games at once. I then decided to go back to playing one game at a time and I’ve been doing that ever since. The only time I’ll play two games at once is when I’m playing a story game and a game like Mario where you can just turn your brain off and have fun. For Xbox and PlayStation I like to look how long it will take me to complete a games main story cause that’s what I mainly focus on. But I don’t do this for games like Marvel Spider Man 2 or Nintendo games because I find them timeless.
I also struggle with keeping up with more stories at a time. Most likely I get REALLY invested in one of them, and then have the other game on hold until I finish the other haha
@@RuubzyI think it’s because mist the time I’m not in the mood to play the games in my backlog and I’ve gotten very good at enjoying what I have I own over 200 games I’ve the time I’ve been gaming I have plenty of game to play already those other games can wait a bit longer
The lesson is simple - enjoy your hobby the way you want. If having a backlog helps you to enjoy gaming - have it. If NOT having a backlog helps you to enjoy gaming - guess what? Don't have it. Personally, keeping track of my backlog helps me with playing more games and enjoy games more. Sometimes, I might get into a game only after 10, 20, or even more hours, so sometimes I really need to push myself to play some games before I start loving it but it's important to keep balance between "trying something new" and "just enjoy playing what you're playing". The best thing about gaming - you can play till you're 90 years old and that hobby won't get stale, since there's just that many good games!
This is very true. For myself I want to note down games I see that look interesting to me, but after a while it feels like a giant list of games I have to play at some point. Rather than games I would like to try
I don't "have" to finish all the games I decided to play at some point. In fact I'm pretty sure I'll die before I even get to look into most of the games I own. Even if aging is defeated in my lifetime and I die in 80000 years in a skiing accident on Pluto, I think that just means I'll own more unplayed games.
That’s very true, if I don’t really enjoy a game that much after playing it for a while I often debate if it’s worth finishing. But not knowing what to play next because there are so many options can sometimes be a problem 😅
I think people use their backlogs as a deposit to just throw games they haven't played there and stamp a "one day I'll play it" on it. Making an actual short list of games I want to beat works great for me. For example, ever since I played Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous I decided to get into CRPGs hardcore. Since then I have played Baldur's Gate 1, 2 and 3, Fallout 1, 2, Tyranny, Pillars of Eternity 1, Colony Ship and Planescape Torment. Before doing this I used to get paralyzed by the hundreds of games I have accumulated. Having a short goal ensures I'll always know what to play next, and if there's a new release I want to play there's no problem, I resume the list after I beat it.
Yeah that's definitely the way my backlog started out. At a certain point I thought: "There are quite a lot of games I'd like to play, let's make a list". But seeing it as a backlog kinda stressed me out. So I started using the word library since that's basically just what it is. Gaming is always supposed to be fun so if your backlog causes you to not have fun it's not worth it. Glas to hear your story! :)
I just feel bad picturing all the money I spent to never touch them for years the only way I can get past this is to delete all the games I have installed on my Xbox and only allow myself to have one installed not allowing myself to play more than one game is helpful
I'm fairly new to pc gaming but my library is already about 100 games big. Steam is such a gift compared to console market place. Startet my journey around 2021
For about a month, well from last August up until this Friday, I started playing games in Alphabetical order because I knew that the backlog would just grow way too big and there will be games that will never get touched but it , I enjoyed many of the games but I never got to really immerse myself in the story coz it felt like I was speedrunning then suddenly I just said screw the alphabetical order and played Zelda for a while, I learned two things from that experience, you'll burn out and maybe a backlog of games isn't that bad,its unhealthy definitely but maybe it isn't that bad.
Yeah that always works well! I made my list when I had so many titles I wanted to try, I felt the need to write them down. Whenever I think of a game and feel the urge to play it I do and it almost always a great time. But when I don’t know what to play and look trough my library is when it gets difficult to choose since there are so many titles. I wish my memory was better so I could do this too lol
I just force myself to play every old and cheap game before the new ones get on sale to pay 50%. As long as you're interested in many genres, you ll always have cheap games to play, even if youre hyped for the new ones. Just be patient
Yeah games are getting expensive! I like to try cheap games to experience new genres. And then when I know if I like the genre or not I tend to look into other popular games
Gaming backlogs as a whole may seem to be overwhelming and exhausting. But I think gamers should divide their games into how long It may take to beat some games and play certain games throughout the year. For example I play 1 very long game each year while covering many smaller games throughout the year. This allows me to slowly pitch off the backlog while enjoying and admiring the long game that I choose. That's jut how I have been doing It. For anyone who may be confused I recommend this method maybe it works for you. Cool video. ^_^
That's a pretty good strategy! Personally the long games tend to have good stories and suck me up entirely. But once I finish one of those I try to stay away from 30+ hour games for a little bit :) Thanks for your comment!
My backlog is only consists of 34 games, at 1 game a month, that'd last 3 years. It helps when you don't have much money for games anyway. I only buy games I know I'd like, I don't have the money to be taking a chance on games. (I only really play modern age games available on PC)
The expenses certainly help with keeping the backlog decently sized! My PC is still really quite old so new games don’t really run well on that either. So at least I don’t need to look at the current-gen PC only games haha :)
I just finished FF 16 after 84 hours! The first of the series I did dlc & all.. I never have the patience for platinums tho.. That’d drive me nuts! For me it’s ocd about having a balanced collection of many genres.. I keep on thinking collect now and play later.. You never know there may come a day when they’ll be outlawed as far as purchasing😜 I’m sure I’ll have more time when I retire anyways
FF16 has such a great story! For me it’s the same with the different genres. Most times I want to play a different genre after finishing one. So after an action RPG like FF16 I think I played something more laidback (can’t remember though, been a while haha) personally I love collecting physical games so when those go on sale I can’t help myself to pick one up. But most of the physical games I have are games I’ve played, or new pick-ups that I want to play soon. It’s mostly the online stuff that keeps piling up 😅
@@Ruubzy I preordered the physicals of Dragons Dogma 2 and Eiyuden Chronicle.. So at least spring is a time to look forward to.. In the meantime I’ll just play some of the oldies & get the backlog a little lower.. I’m currently focusing mostly on Last of Us series
Backlog is good as long as you pick the right games. I have over 70 hours in shin Megami Tensei V, but i had only about 50 a few days ago, hadn't played it in over a year. But addicted to it all over again. Still haven't finished Xenoblade 2 or 1, still have 3 waiting.
Very true! Now that I played quite a few games I can normally tell which games I’ll likely enjoy and which I won’t. But sometimes it’s just that hidden gem that can really take your breath away. SMT games are games that I also really want to play when I get to it, I love Persona games a lot so they should match my interests :)
@@DonnyKirkMusic Thanks for the tips! SMT III Nocturne is the one I'm most interested in. Haven't gotten it yet, but it does seem like that is one of the better SMT's
A lot of my backlog is games where I have hit a wall due to a challenge in the game that I’m not surpassing e.g chocobo race ffx, or a difficulty spike like Witcher three on the hardest setting or the dreaded it just wasn’t holding my interest at that time
That’s understandable. Often when I abandon a game (or keep it on hold) I feel kind of bad to move on from it, but at the same time I know I gave it a shot. Backlogs can be weird man haha
i find the backlog scary at times, ive asked top hat gaming man how does he decide what to play with his vast collection of procured games. he simply said "You cant haha". my collection of digital games is quite large, modern and retro games and indie games too. yet i always find multiplayer games are easier to consume. call of duty, siege, halo, mortal kombat 1 online, the truth is i just dont have the time to play though a huge 200 hour game. i work a very demanding healthcare job and dont have much time to game, i sleep alot as i do alot of driving as well as part of my job. so the backlog will never be finished. i wish i could sit down and play though one of them to completion but its not feasible.
It's the sad truth of being a gamer and getting older. We want more time to play the games we want to play but most often that's just not possible. I'd still try and set aside some time to pick up those backlog games instead of multiplayer games. I sometimes look at games in a simmilar way as books. Just one chapter before bed can be applied to games most often as well. Just play one 'chapter' of a game, and eventually become invested in the story :)
5:45 ruubzy did you describe your vision of this shot to the person filming you or did u just surprise them with that after asking them to film something rq
I have a bunch of rules for back logs. Don't buy more games until you are satisfied with the games you have in your backlog. You don't have to beat the games. Just try them. If your not having fun. Stop playing. It is wasteful to buy a game and then never play it. If there are upcoming or new games you want. Just write a list of games. Later you may not be as hyped for those games or lose interest completely. Just play the games you have first. I highly consider going back to a game I haven't finished instead of purchasing another one because I dont have too many games. If you keep buying new games. You'll just never play any of them. When I was a kid I think I just wanted to collect games and not even really play them. But I actually go back and play games over and over again. Even tho I don't get new ones often. I guess I try to find ones I really like, over Just owning too many for the option of having more. I usually buy used old games for cheap. I buy a game if I really have a feeling to play it.
That’s a great strategy! I personally mostly list down the games I would like to play in the future. Most of the games in my backlog/library are games that I haven’t purchased yet. The ones that I do already have are the ones that I’m getting trough right now. Games are getting really expensive so this way I don’t waste a lot of money on things that I probably won’t play for another 2 years or something, and by then most games have gone down in price at least somewhat! (Except Nintendo games…) :)
Because I don't have money to spend money on new games, at least for steam library I have started using "what I should steam". Finally with it I managed to finish Half-Life and it's expansions. Now started HL2. But of course played different game between Half-Life games so I wouldn't get burn out. Either by using ''what I should steam" or wanted to play the game. Sadly I won't be able to play HL Alyx in near future because it's VR game, but even then even with no vr mod (which isn't intended method to play) I won't be able to play it. And even if I have little money, then if the game is on sale for very cheap I might get it. But most likekly it's very old game, or maybe from indie dev. So I'm not playing modern day AAA games.
Thank you for your comment! Games nowadays are getting really expensive, it makes it easier to complete the games I already have in some way because I’m less likely to buy new games as are you haha :)
I believe all the footage I got from Metaphor Re:Fantazio came from game trailers. I’m really looking forward to it as well. Fall 2024 can’t come soon enough :)
the only time I've ever felt "guilty" for not playing stuff, was because of gamepass. Any second I spend not playing a gamepass game is wasted money on the subscription, and boy that sucks. Other than that tho, this new culture related to games like feeling guilty for not play stuff, or feeling guilty because you're stuck playing your favorite games over and over, is so foreign to me. I naturally always want to play new games so eventually I'll pick something up and play it and have a great time and on to the next one. But I guess I'm in the minority or something.
I think it has mostly to do with a fear of missing out. You hear so many people talk about their favorite 'must play' games. So when I do I note them down on a list and from there it just keeps growing. In my experience it's often not really a feeling of guilt towards not playing a game, but more of a "I really want to play the game for myself and see why it's their favorite game".
If you're talking about the 'Gaming Backlog cinematic thingy' the seventh game is Kena: Bridge of Spirits. It's often described as "The Pixar Dark Souls"
Ah, choice paralysis. Happens to us all. I often finish a game, don't know what to play next because there are too many options. And end up not playing anything at all. Hope you find something to play! :)
I admit, there is a “depressing feeling” about this, but it’s not the fact I have a Backlog… it’s the new subscription services. Some of us have been gamers for DECADES! Many games in our collection were quite expensive. Some people have gained such a massive collection they basically stop playing and are instead making some sort of gallery of video game box art. And so it is that I arrive at my situation. I have these games I love from my gaming library… + a new library that is threatening gaming itself! Obviously the subscription service is meant to not be completed. Too many games are filler on those services and they are suppose to help all types of games. So to stop rambling I’ll write my 2 real issues. 1) These subscriptions devalue services. This year my favorite game was Wo Long. However this game was a Game Pass exclusive. For the economy of Team Ninja was smarty cause Xbox players barely touch Nioh and PC releases weren’t the priority getting released later. So at launch the mainstream Xbox guys hated the game while the PC players got an un-optimized experience. And now me, the consumer who paid and enjoyed the base game… have been disappointed currently with the DLC. It’s like Team Ninja knows that a bigger chunk of the community is pseudo F2P and their efforts on DLC 1 were way bellow the Nioh/FF Sop DLC. 2) It created a new fear when buying games. There was a funny dumb game this year about Dinosaurs VS Exo by Capcom. This game was again on Game Pass… and just like stray and Back 4 Blood I’m expecting a “Ping Pong” of that game between subscriptions. The fact it’s a Game Pass day 1 it truly feels the game is Mid by default and won’t get the support it deserves. And from now on every time I see a game I will have to consider if it will be a subscription in the future. AKA every game I buy now is for “instantaneous play”. No more spending 40 USD + for a game to add to the collection cause if you didn’t play them 1-4 years from now then changes are you wasted money cause they will be on a subscription.
That's a good point, nowadays when I'm in a store looking for some physical copies there's always that "but what if it's on PS Plus next month" thought in the back of my head. Thanks for your insight!
There's barely anything in my backlog any reccomendations
@@jerryjohn3815It's hard to say without knowing what games you have played, what kind of games you are into, and whether you are only interested in recent games- or you don't mind playing older generation games. You can't go wrong with scrolling through the best rated games on metacritic, and seeing what takes your fancy. It might be worth searching for hidden gems/underrated games too. Or just thinking about games that you've played and love and wouldn't mind revisiting.

Backlog is like a list of boring tasks that you force yourself to do at some point in your life, when in reality games are supposed to bring you joy, fun and relaxation during your free time.
Don't fall into the trap of committing to games, or you'll go crazy.
Well said! Thank you so much for your comment :)
Backlogs to me is more like a list of suggestions that I forget about rather than a burden on my shoulders
if i don't commit to game i will never finish any, i've finished about 10 games in my entire life and played hundreds, these days i play one story game and one comp game at a time and don't stop unless i finish it or don't like it
It’s not that the games are boring.
So far I've been able to focus on 2 games right now, without losing my focus just by telling myself: "The other games aren't going anywhere."
It takes a bit to have that mindset, but I feel so far it's rather helpful.
I 100% complete ever game I play, no problems
I try to do something similar but when i beat 2 games i can buy 1 if i want to.
People be saying that gaming is dead and not fun, while I just estimated that I can possibly only play like 10% of games that I'd love to. 😂
Yeah for real! If people think that gaming isn't fun anymore, play a different game lol. There's so much to experience :)
I’ve found that I actually worry about my backlog fairly often, and it kinda sucks. I’ll be playing a game and i’m wondering how much longer I have left so I can finish it and move on to the next one. But games are supposed to be fun! I recently played Alan Wake 2 (amazing game btw) and took my time; made me realise that I should play what I enjoy and not worry about what I haven’t played yet (although I do use Backloggd for a general idea of what games i’m interested in)
I guess my personal advice to people is just to play what you enjoy, play at your own pace, and don’t force yourself through something if you’re not enjoying it.
Idk where i heard this advice, i on once heard:
If its not a hell yes, its a hell no. That should in theroy instantly bring you some clarity.
That can be pretty good advice! But I already know that if I tried that, the games I’m doubtful of will go right back onto the backlog haha
Wow 4 games over the past week is a lot! The games I play most often are way too long for that sadly hahaha. A top 10 list is interesting as well!
That’s a great mindset to have! I hope the gaming library treats you well :)
I love these kinds of videos Ruubzy, glad to have you back on youtube!
I love playing CS2, fortnite, fifa and phasmophobia right now!
All you said is absolutely correct. Strangely enough though, this sounds like common sense to me. Though that might be because I'm on the older side. So I guess there simply are things in life you simple come to accept as you grow older. Respect that you came to this realization at such a young age.
Most things I said in this video are basically common sense, but it helps to remind yourself of that every now and then! Thanks for your comment! :)
If i already have the game, what's helped me is allowing myself to dislike it and ditch it early on instead of finishing bt obligation
That’s actually quite a good method! Thanks for your comment :)
I really liked this video. I also noticed you have a great taste in games. Keep it up
Thank you so much! :)
what i do now is, i don't buy anything at all even if it calls me a little bit and/or is on sale, i only buy if i want to play it right then and there, and if i'm not sure if i'm going to like it or not even if i'm very interested in it, i'll probably play the demo if it has one or crack it to play it as a 'demo', and then depending on if I like it or not I buy it and continue playing or I remove it from my wishlist (if even I do this 'demo' play and I'm still not sure if I like it, I'll probably keep playing it cracked and if I like it I'll buy it even if I have already played the game).
Thanks, ive been annoyed by these "how to finish your backlog" videos recently. JUST PLAY THE GAMES!
Lol that’s so many games and books!
@Ruubzy Yeah, I have a problem😶
I have more of a book backlog than game backlog lol. I promised myself I won't buy any more games or books until I finish the ones I have right now but to be fair I only have 10 games for my ps5 in comparison to between 100-200 books
Thousands of books?? D: oh my
I feel kind of a similar way as you, maybe I should call it a collection over a "backlog".
@@Ruubzy
I can't go more than 3 days without beating a game, I have been doing it since 2018.
That’s great! As long as a backlog or library doesn’t cause you to feel overwhelmed it’s a good method to keep track of the stuff you want to play :)
I tend to play what im in the mood for. And if its a game i really want to enjoy, i dont join chat parties and use a headset to fully immerse myself.
@@Ruubzy same here pretty sure i am more then half way through reload whenever i play a good Jrpg i always find it hard to put it down
I have to ask, when do you decide to drop a game? I ask because it is something i struggle with when it comes to single player games.
@@HurkaTheGuard well if i have put a decent amount of time into a game and i find i have not liked anything about it and its a chore to play thats when i know its time to drop it and move on to something i enjoy
You are literally my favorite youtuber
I would prefer to come to that point where I have no more backlog. I bought plenty of games that turned out they weren't good for me, even though they are considered good games by the general public. So they will stay in the backlog but I don't really wanna play them anymore, and it just makes me feel like I wasted my money.
That’s understandable. Recently I’ve figured out that I like certain genres more than others, so I try to focus more on those games. If there is a game I’d really want to try out I’ll give it a shot but I’m less likely to put every popular game on the list haha
what's the song that starts at 1:10?
people should stop treating games like a job and rather something enjoyable, if you feel like playing a certain game, play it, less is often more
the only game i had growing up was minecraft and that was all i needed because i innovated and tried new things, new challenges, got creative.
Excellent use of the Catherine Music
I have so many Unplayed Purchased games and also a lot of Unplayed "Free to Keep" purchased games I don't really feel like maintaining a list.
That’s fair, my backlog doesn’t even include Steam/PC-only games because I wouldn’t know where to begin 😅
I think gamepass is ruining games for me. I tend to not feel motivated to finish a game but if i buy a game i enjoy it more
That’s fair! I think I often feel the same way too. But it’s also nice to have lots of games to try out on a gamepass :)
Gabe knows what he's doing.
He knows that I'm rarely playing computer games anymore, so a sale is the only way he'll get me to buy anything.
RUUBZY APPEARING IN MY PAGE? Dude you're popping off I'm so proud
Hahaha thank you Pygs! :D
I don’t think I’ve ever felt stressed about my gaming backlog
That's the way you should feel! Keep it like that haha :)
@@RuubzyI think it’s because mist the time I’m not in the mood to play the games in my backlog and I’ve gotten very good at enjoying what I have I own over 200 games I’ve the time I’ve been gaming I have plenty of game to play already those other games can wait a bit longer
Very good mindset
Don’t know when gaming backlogs even became a thing. Gaming should be fun. Don’t buy games you’re not itching to play.
Nice! I don’t really play games on pc that often anymore, but steam really is a great place to find some good deals pretty often :)
3:44 they can go anywhere, especially multiplayer ones.
Yeah I guess if they’re games that require servers to be open. I didn’t think of that one!
I just use my memory as a backlog, if it's still relevant in my head than it's probably worth playing
My only backlog is the nes library. Most modern games don't do it for me. I'm the odd ball.
I’ve been meaning to get more into the classics! Really want to give the original ff7 and Chrono Trigger a shot myself
@@Ruubzy You're welcome. ^_^
I never had a huge backlog of games until I got a Steam Deck. Now I have over 300 games. 😂
What is the name of the song in the beginning?
The very first song is Hodomoe City from Pokémon Black and White :)
@@Ruubzy Thank you! I have been looking for the name of that song forever
I just finished FF 16 after 84 hours! The first of the series I did dlc & all.. I never have the patience for platinums tho.. That’d drive me nuts! For me it’s ocd about having a balanced collection of many genres.. I keep on thinking collect now and play later.. You never know there may come a day when they’ll be outlawed as far as purchasing😜
I’m sure I’ll have more time when I retire anyways
For me a backlog is only games I own and haven’t played and the rest is a wish list
For me that's also kinda true. But I just lump them all together and call it my library haha

@@Ruubzy Gracias por pensar en nosotros jaja

There's something to be said about playing a game after it has been fixed and optimised.
My solution to this issue is using steam offline. If i can't see I cant buy it
Hahaha that’s a great idea!
CASTTI‘S THEME OMG that was unexpected! Hope the Ost from OT2 takes off as much as the first one

@Ruubzy Oh cool thanks, I'll download it now 👍🏼
My backlog is crazy
the only time I've ever felt "guilty" for not playing stuff, was because of gamepass.
What is that seventh game in your intro. It looks really cool!!!!!
If you're talking about the 'Gaming Backlog cinematic thingy' the seventh game is Kena: Bridge of Spirits. It's often described as "The Pixar Dark Souls"
those 3 games you mentioned have something in common. You dont have to complete them.
you know I went 1 game at a time, then I got a steam account
Welp I did it... I focused on my backlog so much that I don't know what to play because I need to buy most of games
Ah, choice paralysis. Happens to us all. I often finish a game, don't know what to play next because there are too many options. And end up not playing anything at all. Hope you find something to play! :)

This is a first word problem, steam games in Argenitna cost half of a median salary xDj
Yeah that’s true, luckily steam has different prices depending on the country you are from. But sometimes the games are just too expensive either way!
It only gets worst when you have a PC/PS5
Yeah same here, a switch as well. Just more and more games on different platforms I wanna play lol
I don't have backlog because i don't have money lol. I play only in games i genuinely will like
Yeah gaming is becoming a more expensive hobby as time goes on sadly
