@@InjusticeJosh yup. Feels like the old days going to blockbuster picking out a game, rather than playing a game while thinking about the next one on the list
One thing to keep in mind about "saying no" to a particular game: it's not necessarily a permanent decision. It may be weeks, months, or years later, but I often rediscover the interest that I originally had in playing a game I dropped. When I find that desire to play again, I jump into it. Some of those games even become my all time favorites
Did this with Horizon Zero Dawn, I love the game and im right about to finish up the DLC but I started playing in early 2023😂 The problem was Hogwarts Legacy dropped so I switched to that which was immediately followed by Tears of the Kingdom and then I switched around and played a bunch of different stuff before coming back to Horizon. I'm still loving every minute of it though!
Playing games you want to play versus games you feel like you should play is such a powerful shift in thinking! I will be able to appreciate our hobby more now. Thank you 😊❤
I have a massive backlog and certainly get a level of anxiety from not having the chance to play so many classic games. But for some reason, if I’m enjoying a game, I can’t help but not rush it. I look at my backlog all the time, get excited about the next games I’m gonna play and even plan it out to an extent. But when I’m genuinely enjoying a game, I always take my time. Not even intentionally. I just get so much enjoyment out of the experience that when playing, I simply can’t rush through no matter how much I want to get to that next game, which in thankful for
I play video games 2 hours a day on average while working, studying, and spending time with family. I am 25 years old. My backlog is however many games I can finish before I die, within those constraints. In college, I would sacrifice sleep and overthink it and I was miserable.
I wanted to end my backlog, back then. I beat it, as fast as i could after some years, and then it was not funny. I wanted to play something, but didnt have anything to play. Then i realized, having a backlog, i mean a library with many games i want to play is better, then searching days and weeks for a new game or playing games, i didnt like. So chill and it should make you happy and not stressing you. Live is stressful enough 🎉
As someone who has a collection of over 500 video games, I think that patience is key. If you consider calling the video games you own and haven’t played by now a backlog, you‘re already assuming, that it’s work, which is the wrong approach. Appreciating a title is what it’s all about and, for example, while I had a few Nintendo DS games sitting on my shelf for years, I recently regained the appreciation for this system and played through them in no time. I could have easily told myself, that I need to play them soon, since I really wanted to own them back then, but I just knew, it’s not the right time. Anyway, love your approach!
I think this is a good way to approach it. I consider it my gaming library, games I can play right now without fuss. I buy new games when they come out and just add them to the collection. What I do to avoid decision paralysis is I use a wheel picker program, and I just add new games to it as I buy it and when I finish a game, I just spin the wheel and see what I get to play. Then I play that until I am either content with it or I beat it. Rinse and repeat. Also, If I just really want to play a game I just do. I don't let the wheel decide all the time, only when I can't pick a game from my collection.
I have ADHD and I've come to peace many years ago with the fact that there are simply some games I own that I will never get around to playing. I've even removed some of them from my library permanently because that's how certain I am that I will never want to play them. Idk, to me it seems simple: if you want to play a game, you will eventually play it. If it was more of an impulse purchase, however, you will likely not want to play it. I much prefer replaying my favorite games, and only occasionally playing a "new" game (new for me).
I did this yesterday, I clicked “hide game” on the games I also just play with friends, or have for when friends stay over (if they get up before me I keep games they like in my Ps5 so they can play whatever) and never on my own. Even cutting the number down by like 10 games felt better.
I always exhaust myself from focussing on one game. Idk if everyone gets this but I feel like JRPGs catch my eye the most but always have the longest beat time and after like 40 hours I get bored of the combat lol (looking at you P5). So now I always play a few games at a time, normally a story focussed one and a sandbox or online game, might help for some of you :)
I played about 80 hours of p5 before I accepted I wasn't having fun anymore. I got into it for a while but it's so bloated that I got tired. I continued playing because of how much everyone says its an amazing game but I couldn't keep forcing myself to play.
@@PetitTasdeBoue tbh the best experiences I have with games are ones that aren’t too long and provide a crap ton of really good story content. Stuff like The Last of Us, Halo, Telltale Games, but I will mention some really good “long” games and those are usually BioWare’s games like Dragon Age Origins, the Mass Effect trilogy, and both Knights of the Old Republic.
Separating my games into want to play and games I feel like I need to play feels so amazing! Thank you for this wonderful video :) I've never thought of this before.
For Steam I use the, "hide game/make hidden" feature, so I don't have to look at it. I'm hoping to delete most of the games in my collection to the games I only want to play in a few years.
What I do every end/beginning of the year is make a tiermaker list and categorize my backlog: playing, high priority (~6 games), play soon (~12 games), play after (~24 games), play never. So a similar approach. Now I have a realistic amount of games for that year leaving room for new releases or games I just want to play on a whim as well. The goal is not to complete those games within the year, just to have a nice small selection of games I actually want to play or give a try. The play never games I even could consider selling if I have a physical copy of it.
I've been better as of late to prevent my backlog from increasing. What I do is if I don't plan on playing the game right away, then I don't buy. This is really easy for PC games, especially on Steam. Back then I'd convince myself to just buy it because of FOMO during sales, but the sales happen so frequently that I can afford to skip a good deal every once in a while because it'll come back on sale. I save money this way too. I’ve noticed that wanting something feels more exciting than actually owning it, because once I get it, I often feel like the urge to enjoy it is already gone. Buying games on a whim rarely ever means you're buying the game when you feel like in the mood to play THAT game. EDIT: Also one thing I've done is hide games from my steam library, even games people say are amazing. Some games just aren't for me, and seeing less games makes it less overwhelming. If I want to play a game I own, steam will say I own it, and i will just simply unhide the game if I find that I wanna play later.
something this video help me realize is ive bought plenty of games bc they were labeled as "amazing" games and not so much bc they had my interest, and ive often skipped out on buying games i thought id enjoy simply bc i could get 2 "amazing" games at the same price or bc the game wasnt as popular as others, and i think the reason i did this was to avoid buying a bad game and not taking the risk, ive recently bought a couple games that were on sale and was gonna miss out on a game that looked really cool simply bc those games were rated really well and that i could get like 3 games at the price of the game i wanted, since watching this its helped me realize this and im gonna go ahead and buy the game i think looks more enjoyable and buy it
Yeah, I bought RDR2 because everybody talked about how amazing it is, but it looks incredibly boring for me personally and I don't know if I'll play more than an hour of the game in my lifetime, even though I spent $20 on it. Also, in modern times, with physical collections, you can play a game instantly, without downloading patches, starting up Steam, needing to go online to sign in, etc. etc. and just jump right into a game. Also modern games are much less engaging and have much more random walking around, which makes the game boring.
@@youtubedj9298 ive actually dont the same thing, i bought red dead 2 bc of how much ive heard of it and ive had it for months and have only played like maybe an hour or 2 and that was me forcing myself to play it simply bc i hear so much about it, ive done the same with similar games and have bought so many games bc ive heard they were amazing but yet i seem to enjoy the less highly rated games bc they were actually what i was looking for. im hoping to never make the same mistake like that again and jus buy the games i actually want to play
@@cleareclipz76 yup. I bought, Stacking, because the reviews said it had good humor. I'm even struggling to play games I like, let alone these other games. My favorite games seem to be the Warioware Twisted/Touched/Micro Game$, Solitaire, Dune 2 and maybe Tetris every now and then.
i used to have a problem with backlog too. Turns out i just had to actually start up a game and try them. Some days i could knock off 4-5 from the list, either going to the "not interested" pile or the "gonna give it a chance later"
Up until a few years ago I played games around 4 hrs a day. I slowly began to burn out and only some games would bring me back. I hadn't played anything in around 6 monthes until tears of the kingdom came out. I put 150hrs or so I to it and ju ped into diablo 4 immediately afterwards. Put another 100ish hrs into and then nothing. Over a year I didn't even turn my ps5 on. I just started playing MH rise and I am falling in love with games again. I have a list of around 30 games to play and I am doing my best to just have fun with it instead of making it a need or must do.
i see it like this: the issues is thinking there is an issue in the first place. it's a matter of how we think and look at things. dont judge, dont let outside factors influence you. only now exists. like said in the video, play what u want to play. and point of playing is getting a satisfaction out of it. a backlog doesn't actually exist, neither any obligations. when u become free of neurotic thinking patterns of have tos and should 'ves that steer u from outside, u can simply enjoy now, from inside.
I’m so glad I don’t have this problem anymore. I learnt to let go and just play the games I want without worrying about either the backlog or finishing games. If you can somehow get to that point, gaming is a lot of fun and you don’t feel guilty replaying games. Backlog videos are good but you have to take the strategies from a place of fun, not a place of weird gamer anxiety and feeling you should finish all your games. Edit: Ironically, I’ve finished a few games this year without thinking about it.
Here is how I view it and act on it: - I view my games as a collection and library. Not a backlog. - I choose multiple games to play at a time, but only one from each genre. One jrpg, one survival horror, one open world, one racing or sports, one platformer or chill cutesy game. - I like to also absorb what went into making the game, appreciating the art story, design choices, understanding the industry at that time. Understanding the tech behind the game. It's all just so much fun! - only thing I don't force myself to do, or even care about doing is 100% games. No desire to do that for any game. I like finishing main story with a healthy dose of side quests (most) and that's it. On to the next. - most importantly I choose the game based on mood. A lot of times, a certain title will just pop into my head and based on instinct, that's what I go with. Here are the games I'm playing right now: Lies of P (PS5) Control (PC) Resident Evil: Village VR (psvr2) Resident Evil 4 [2023] VR (psvr2) Final Fantasy 3: Pixel Remaster (switch) Gran Turismo 7 (psvr2) Alan Wake 2 (PC) Dark Souls 2: SOTFS (PC) Need For Speed Underground (ps2) Warhammer40,000:Boltgun (switch) Stellar Blade (PS5) Bomb Rush Cyberfunk (switch) Pokemon Brilliant Diamond (switch)
@@JonBlack413 nah. I'm stuck on lies of p and ff3. The VR games are only when I'm in the mood. Underground, DS2, Cyberfunk are also in the mood quickplays. The ones I am really focusing on right now are stellar blade and brilliant diamond. Most of the others are on standby but I won't be moving on to other things till I finish some of these games. Control and Alan wake 2, I am going to just start over
Great video and points made. I have put my games in folders and thought about a spreadsheet as well. The main point of playing what you want is a great one that while seemingly obvious, we often can forget at times.
For sure, I have about 6 games started. I ended up liking 1 more than the others so I've been playing that non-stop. Some games will catch you and won't let go but you've got to attempt to play it before you'll know.
The be aggressive clip had me dying! Great video like always my friend!!! I’m trying to follow your advice in this video because my backlog has me stressed sometimes to the point I start several games at once and then I never finish any of them! Like right now, I’m playing Deathloop, God of War, Syberia: The World Before, and the first Bioshock at the same time.
I started selling my games and consoles a couple months back because I'm relocating to another country, deciding to keep only my steam deck and a small retro handheld. I've been playing more now that I removed the factor of choice and backlog and I don't feel overwhelmed when I need to choose a new game to play. Feels pretty good to me. Not saying that you have to do the same, just sharing my experience 😊 happy gaming!
Awesome video and concept. I use an excel sheet created by the RUclips channel Orbalology and I have a gaming journal where I write little reviews and do drawings for each of the games I play and beat. It gives me a little reward to look forward to even after beating a game. Really enjoyed hearing your perspective on what can be a pretty overwhelming thing to stare at lol
Your approach to your backlog seems similar to how I'm tackling mine. You touched on a couple of the same things i said in my most recent video on it. Have fun! It’s all about the fun
I have games in my backlog I don't want to play but I like the idea of playing them. It's like enjoying that period of looking forward to something. Unplayed games don't bother me. But then I pick games up that I may not play in sales. When I want to play something I make sure it's worth my purchase. So I guess there's little investment, perhaps that's why it does not bother me. What bugs me actively is art projects I have mapped out but can't get myself to do (for a variety of reasons). That too is a backlog.
Can heavily relate to the last part😓 One thing that kind of helps to me is to just spend at least one hour every day to my project Like when i find myself in a position that day where i'm not really doing anything and am not in the mood to do anything (like clearing my gaming backlog) i just start a 1 hour timer on my phone and start brainstorming about my project Ofc it only works when i don't forget it🫠
What I do, I have two cupboards the right is filled with games I still have to play. The left is all the games I have played. I pick games from the right cupboard and see it shrink. Way more relaxingz
my techniques: Give the game an hour or 2, if it doesn't catch your interest or annoy you, just delete. Worst case scenario you wasted some money, but there's nothing keeping you from coming back later. its just that having so many options makes it less likely that you have the patience for gritting your teeth through a rough patch. i deleted hundreds of games, but it freed up my mind and i dont catch myself just scrolling, starting up a random game and booting off after minutes. most importantly, you'll play things you actually enjoy again when you do find the games that grab you. After possibly years of clearing games like this, you might run out eventually and then you can look through your steam hidden list of whatever and check if something is worth revisiting now you don't have your mind preocupied.
I made a promise not to buy new games until i get a certain number of my list. I've been enjoying indie demos so much lately i don't know if I'll ever buy a new game.
Problem is that people use their backlog as a closet they just throw every game they have on and tell themselves they'll beat them all. I think the first thing about making and beating a backlog is making a "beatable" list. Maybe with 10 games at max is a good start. Something else that helps me a lot is making "thematic" backlog lists, like for example "All Batman Arkham games", "All CRPGs", "All games made by Tim Cain", "The 3D Prince of Persia Trilogy", those are some of mine. The idea is to clear multiple small backlogs and feeling good about it, instead of making one huge backlog with thousands of games and becoming frustrated about it.
Recently I have started to accept that I just cannot play everything I want to. I don't have the time and even if I did, I don't think I could do it either. So I have started to rank the games on my "queue". Some have High "priority", some have low and most have medium. Priority is just my representation of how much I want to play the game. And when I finish a game I just look at my High priority games and either pick one or if I am not in the mood for any of them I scroll down to the medium section. Bottom line, I no longer stress over unplayed games, rather I just keep track of them so that when I finish one I am aware of my options and just go with whatever I am in the mood for at that moment. So far it works great. My OCD brain is happy because I have a comprehensive list. And I am happy because I play whatever the hell I want. :)
One thing I can recommend is to stop buying new ones, that act alone will put your mind in a "settling in" type of mindset, if you are constantly buying new games your mind is constantly stimulated therefore taking your focus off of the games you already own, it's impossible to want to play that many games at once, I just started playing God of War Ragnarok after taking a full year off of completing the campaign, and it's still just as fun and exciting as it was before, it's just the many games that I've acquired made it impossible to focus on it. Trust me, just press pause on the collecting button, and you'll see how many gems you have and actually want to play
My approach to the backlog is that I pick a game I want to play and just play it. I dont buy hundreds of games because I know Im not gonna play them. Only buy whats on sale and even then double check if I really need it. Right now I have just over a hundred games so cant really justify buying anything new. And playing at least a couple of hours every week so Im making progress. The only thing I planned was what Im gonna play this year just so I dont forget. And if I dont stick to it exactly, who cares.
I've had some time off from work due to an injury lately and found that I feel less burned out on gaming if I can just identify what I'm in the mood to play and just play that. I've dabbled in probably 10 different games in that time and finally played through Kingdom Hearts. Journey before destination. Doing things just to say they're done isn't satisfying and just causes stress.
@backlogbaldie I'm saying to relish the experience you're playing rather than to force yourself to play a game just to check it off a list. I wasn't saying that game in particular is journey before destination. In that time I've played a bit of Death Stranding, Fallout 4, Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime Remastered, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, The Witcher 3, and probably others I'm forgetting. Some of them I gave up on, but others I'm further along in than I've ever been made it just because I'm not trying to force myself to play something I'm not in the mood for.
@@loonar7960 arrgh sorry that’s my bad I mixed up the words 🤦♂️🤦♂️ I meant journey not destination, and I found the kingdom hearts games to be a lot more fun in the Disney worlds than in all the endgame heartless/nobody/organisation weirdness 😂 100% with you buddy, my whole approach is enjoying what you do. Life’s too short 😊
One good tip to keep the overwhelm of numbers down is also being intentional when you're buying our obtaining games. Is it in your cart because you couldn't pass up the great deal in this sale? Why did you feel like that? Look at all the sales steam has and realise that the game will probably be on sale again later so you don't have to impulse buy it now. Just because it's a great deal now doesn't mean you have to get it now or that you are actually interested in the game. Just let your cart sit fit at least a night, longer if you're someone who is easily hyped up and impulse buys stuff and come back with one simple question: do I actually want to pay this game? And if yes, how soon, might a better deal come along, what is the max price I want to spend on this title? This keeps you from inflating your library with stuff you're not 100% interested in to play at some point wedged you get it. In the same vain: just kick out free titles you're no longer interested in unless that might means you will permanently lose access. A bit of intentional living never hurt anybody and you from a hoarding problem.
Imma tell yall an impopular opinion: I don't really wanna clear my backlog. I have it for a reason: to have some fun choosing the next game I'll play on my free time. For that same reason I have lists of animes, series and movies that I wanna watch. I don't ever want to have to decide WHAT to watch when I'm already on the couch with my popcorn getting cold. I want to have a list of interesting choices MADE BY ME ready. I also find the process to chosen the next game really engaging. I play 2-3 games in parallel. Preferable one being more linear and intense and the other a more slowly paced (Open World, sandbox, horror). When I finish a game, I pick about 8 candidates from my list and do a little tournament between them. The winner is them played and I get to really think about what I want in the process.
The best thing I did was start looking at my backlog as a library of future fun, though it didn't completely fix my problem. I also tend to favor coop games if anyone asks & my one buddy is essentially permanently online unless it's before 2pm or after 1am. Which means I've pumped too many hours into games like Helldivers 2 & even beaten games like Suicide Squad & Gotham Knights (this ones pretty fun actually). So I've still got work to do, but over the last 2.5 years I've beat over 60 games which in my books is a healthy number.
My backlog came since growing up i dont have any pc or any handheld device. The only way for me to somehow play games is by watching youtube videos. There are many games that caught my interests in watching youtube vids, however, when the time comes where I already have my own pc I struggle to play the games that caught my attention before.
My problem is that I have games that I want to play and games that I want to play AGAIN. The latter take from me trying out new games. I keep getting back to the old ones that I enjoyed for years.
I'm not intending to complete my backlog. I like to keep there as a kind of 'assurance' that I'll always have something new available to play when I feel the need. Everything in my backlog was some kind of super cheap bargain. It serves to protect me from accidentally paying full price for a game on a whim.
I understand your approach and it gives me some ideas, but I don't feel like making the 2 groups and then triage (and spreadsheet 😮) would alleviate the "guilty". My approach to it is a bit more simplistic: when I roll down my backlog, I know already that there're 3 types of games. The quick casual with 20h or less of gameplay. The games that require some further exploring, 50-100h of gameplay. And online with endgame content. The first group is good to be played on my handheld PC console just for some quick fun. The second requires longer hours, like 3+ per session but it allows me to sit and relax. And the last group that will make me completely committed to it for a long time. Then it's easier for me to think the good route at that moment and give it a roll. 😉🤘
There definitely isn’t one way to decide which games to play. My style is - to not have a backlog - to have other hobbies - books, movies, exercise, home improvement, taking online courses, etc I’m very much an “in the moment” person where I might plan to play a series, like Mass Effect LE on January, finish the 1st game, and that’s it for a few months until I get the urge to resume the series. Since then, I’ve read several books, improved several areas in my home, and started an online course to prepare to get a better job. I’m actually thinking about starting ME 2 soon, so books and studying might go on pause for a bit. Maybe this could be called the balanced approach to the backlog. idk. But a video that looked at multiple approaches vs a single one might do well on your channel .

I have my steam categories organized by the average Time to beat, but at this point I use a random number generator to decide my games most of the time. It has been pretty fun to do it that way while still having my 2 multiplayer games I play.
Adult + maybe 1-2hrs available + can afford anything gaming you want + endless potential library + community hype over games = I will just take my time, not stress about unfinished games (see my unfinished projects IRL). I will just sample everything until something pulls me in to really dedicated to it-- Trials Mana has that place for me. I do have some artificial time restraints such as it goes off of the subscription service in 4 days!
The best solution is just stop adding new games to your backlogs. I made the mistake of jumping into sales and buying lot of games, some I don't even remember I already owned. So really, let's just stop checking steam sales or PS sales and just buy that one game that we really want
Playing a game for just an hour is good, but I would even say 20 minutes is good for determining what to play next. It's surprising how much information you can get from a game just by getting your hands on it.
Me: Let's start on that backlog. Also me: Or I could replay Skyrim or FF8 😂 I never learn, but I love those games and try not to feel guilty for enjoying games I love.
I really need to approach my backlog in a relaxed way... Lately I've been clearing a massive chunk of it but it feels so much like a job and not a fun activity 😢
I look at a “backlog” as a cornucopia of choice. I will never run out of exciting games to play. It’s a pretty darn good problem to have. A friend of mine plays only a few select genres of games and always struggles to find something to get him interested. I think that’s a much more difficult position to be in.
@@backlogbaldie me too just completed cs3 a few days ago holy what an ending but got burned out too cause at this point i've played 8 trails games back to back😂
But i hear so many things about people being surprised by a game they thought they wouldn't like, or didnt actually want to play. I have so much FOMO its ridiculous. Like, what if that game I say no to ends up being my bew favorite game of all time?????
This video made me realize I’ve already reached this point when I left social media and stopped watching game reviews and walkthroughs and focused on one game at a time. There was a time when I began starting games and then jumping between them which was a fun break. I feel it’s good to have that discipline and balance your time but it’s ok to cut yourself some slack and try out new things every once in a while. One problem I have now though. How do you balance content creation with videogames? You said you took a step back and that alleviated it and are now back to content creation. Do you still feel the same way when you left and if not, why? How did you come to that?
Excellent questions! I am still very passionate about content creation, but having a life and a full time job are very hard things to balance with it. I often finish games well in advance of them featuring in videos. I write scripts on public transport, and I work on videos for a few hours at a time where I can (I set timers so I don’t overdo it and burn out) around all my other obligations. There are other factors too. Like I had two weeks leave in April and that let me smash through a huge chunk of backlog games, but equally my day job becomes insane over the summer so my creation schedule will slow down these next few months because I just won’t have the energy. RUclips is easily the hardest thing I have ever done, but I really enjoy it, and I think that’s the secret. If you love what you do, you’ll find a way.
@@backlogbaldie Writing scripts ahead of time sounds good. I thought I felt lazy for having them sit there. Do you think your opinion changes or you don’t remember/feel the same enthusiasm for a topic in an already written script? That’s a worry of mine. But hey despite your personal responsibilities, you still seem to upload once a week which is a great feat so props to you on that.
@@InjusticeJosh that can happen but I find reading the script aloud before I record helps me remember, and whenever needed I can review footage or fire up the game again too. And thank you! 😊
The only game that i'll be committed to play nowadays is the trails series because i'm invested in the overarching story. But for most other games i'll only play for a few hrs then drop it entirely and not look back. Also it's because i'm an adult and I constantly have worries about life and my future which doesn't help as well
I say this joke, with love, and knowing in the mind when you have buried yourself so deep with anxiety ruminating on this list for so long, building it to a point where you feel it will collapse over you, that it doesnt seem this simple, and that's okay. But "Huh, if I play my games in my backlog, i don't have as many games in my backlog!" Like, Yeah. You also dont have to finish any you arent enjoying, it really do be that simple.
I enjoyed the 100 hours I spent on Shin Megami Tensei V and the challenge it provided. I want to go back for the rerelease with the new storyline. I think I’m going to play it on safety difficulty because I don’t feel like spending another 100 hours…
You showing hollow knight every time when talking about "saying no to a game" will be my cue to give up on hollow knight. I just feel like I can't get into it.
I play a game if the gameplay is fun and don't really care about the story (some exceptions like Infamous Second Son). I also stop playing a game when I think I've had my fun with the game before or after the credits roll.
There is something fun that I started doing to solve this 😂, I add like 5 games that i am interested in at the moment to a spin and the game that comes is instantly played no questions, adds some curiosity to which game i would play.
I liked your point about not feeling guilty about replaying a game you love, over starting something new. Why do you have to feel bad about doing something you enjoy/want to do?
Disagree with the 'play at least an hour'. For games with long intros (e.g. your example of MGSV) sure. But for the majority of games? The intro is very similar to the rest of the game and no point forcing yourself to play a game.
A problem is already to watch videos about games... 😏 (...seriously, we must appreciate what is given to us, that we have, we find, that brings us good... ...rather than what we should have, find, that may be far from it...) (...ultimately it is us who matters.)
since I'm not a game streamer, so I don't need to actually force myself playing a newly released game I can focus on the games that I'm currently playing, and saving myself some money for buying those games later~ I mean, those games are not going anywhere right?
One of my problems is I only ever want to play rouge-likes... I wanna finish my story campaign games, but after work I always boot up my regular old comfort games
I would like to have a more relax relationship with the games I am or am not playing. But it really has become a bit complicated. I really like persona 4 golden. So I wanted to play arena and ultimate arena. Arena is badly pace, but have a good story. It was fun to see persona 3 and 4 characters interacting and also seeing aged versions of persona 3. But I don't do well with visual novels so it was painful to get through Arena. But I did it and I was happy I did it, because Ultimate arena is a direct continuation and so much better paced! It was mainly a great time. But the experience with those two games made it harder to let go of playing some other slower paced games. Because I will always consider if I might have a great time when it is over. Conclusion = it is hard. But I am always joggling my wish to finish games and this weird almost depressive uninterest in the games I own, so it is not making it easier. I often just end up replay games or get into a game but then stop playing for one reason or another, but still walking around not knowing if I want to drop the game or not. FOMO is a pain.
Kinda know what you mean. Persona 5 took me 3 months to finish my first time (I kept taking breaks and finishing entire other games) but because I know it was worth it, I give other games like that more patience than I would have before. My advice for the fomo is uninstall the game, give yourself a week, then see if you still want to play it. If you just want to know how it ends, RUclips game movies do the trick for me. Hope this helps.
This was a good video. I like to look at my games as a library of games I can play from and I just play from them and enjoy the experience. I use one of those online wheels and I have added all my games to it, and when I buy a new game it gets added to the list. I start a game and play it until I feel satisfied. This could mean 100% it, it could mean just finish it until credits roll, it could mean sinking 100 hours into and getting bored, or it could even mean trying it and deciding I didn't like it. Once I am done with a game I either pick a game I really want to play if there's one I am dying to play (usually a newer game) or if I am having trouble deciding I just roll the wheel and let it pick a random game from my library. I don't get bogged down in making a decision, I don't see it as things I NEED to do. I just play games and have fun. Once I am doing with the game I take it off the list and it goes into one of two categories. 1 Games I can never see myself playing again. These are games I usually dislike or they are like a linear RPG that I know I won't enjoy playing again. 2 Games that I could see myself playing again such as a long-term game like World of Warcraft, or Sims 4, or Call of Duty. Or on the super rare occasion a single player game that I really liked. These are games that sometimes I just feel like going back to and playing and if I do, then I just take a break from the library of games I have and enjoy myself for a little while.
Ok my back log isn't too bad may have like under 200 games and besides a couple games left that I want to collect which is like maybe 5 ...maybe I'm just taking the approach of playing one game at a time.
My problem isn't starting games, but grinding out the last few trophies for the platinum. I have close to 20 games all completed with one or two trophies left that I just can't bring myself to do, even though I like the game. 😅
I read every comment 😉 play as many games as you like dude, it’s your life. My advice would be if you start to feel stressed by the number, scale it back until you feel comfortable.
They’re screenshots from backlog tracker.com. You made me wonder for a minute there cos I do have lots of game wall art but I didn’t remember putting any in this video 😂
The last game that consumed me was RDR2. Played it every time I could, even for just 20 minutes. Ever since finishing it, I haven’t had that same passion. It’ll come back one day when the right game catches me at the right time. After all, it’s just a hobby. And not even a very healthy one
I got a PlayStation backlog for platinums and I honestly just want to find another hobby and throw my consoles away 😂 less is more, too many games and consoles makes me depressed
Thanks for watching! Don't forget you can follow along with my backlog progress here, and if you see a game in green you like, let me know and it might just be my next video!

All in all you're just a steamgamingbacklog video in the wall.
@ mostly PS5…but I appreciate the lyrical sentiment 😉
@@backlogbaldie We don't need no PlayStation. We don't need no cheap upscaling. Hey, SONY leave them gamers alone!
I stopped overthinking this and just learned to let go and just jump around depending on what I crave to play.
That’s my hope when the backlog is cleared 😂
It’s definitely a lot more fun when you just jump into the game you feel like playing rather than the one you feel like finishing.
same. I let go of the FOMO and Sunk Cost Fallacy and just playing what I enjoy, if I don't I stop and move on.
This is the way.
Exactly this
I gave up on zelda botw 2 times in two years, in the beginning...then...everyone knows but I found out to be great for me as well
Did this with Horizon Zero Dawn, I love the game and im right about to finish up the DLC but I started playing in early 2023😂 The problem was Hogwarts Legacy dropped so I switched to that which was immediately followed by Tears of the Kingdom and then I switched around and played a bunch of different stuff before coming back to Horizon. I'm still loving every minute of it though!
Playing games you want to play versus games you feel like you should play is such a powerful shift in thinking! I will be able to appreciate our hobby more now. Thank you 😊❤
It blew my mind! Happy to help 😊
I just get so much enjoyment out of the experience that when playing, I simply can’t rush through no matter how much I want to get to that next game, which in thankful for
To be fair that sounds like a pretty healthy relationship you have with your games 👍
Just means you’re enjoying the moment over pushing yourself to your “future fun” when you should be having fun right now
I play video games 2 hours a day on average while working, studying, and spending time with family.
100% This 👍
I think this is a good way to approach it.
Definitely good to have variety, and I hear ya on P5 😂
Maybe due to novelty and how human brains seek it.
I played about 80 hours of p5 before I accepted I wasn't having fun anymore. I got into it for a while but it's so bloated that I got tired. I continued playing because of how much everyone says its an amazing game but I couldn't keep forcing myself to play.
JRPG are the worst lol
Too much grind / farming
@@PetitTasdeBoue tbh the best experiences I have with games are ones that aren’t too long and provide a crap ton of really good story content. Stuff like The Last of Us, Halo, Telltale Games, but I will mention some really good “long” games and those are usually BioWare’s games like Dragon Age Origins, the Mass Effect trilogy, and both Knights of the Old Republic.
Separating my games into want to play and games I feel like I need to play feels so amazing! Thank you for this wonderful video :) I've never thought of this before.
You’re very welcome! Glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful 😊
I like this 👍
I've been better as of late to prevent my backlog from increasing.
If I want to play a game I own, steam will say I own it, and i will just simply unhide the game if I find that I wanna play later.
something this video help me realize is ive bought plenty of games bc they were labeled as "amazing" games and not so much bc they had my interest, and ive often skipped out on buying games i thought id enjoy simply bc i could get 2 "amazing" games at the same price or bc the game wasnt as popular as others, and i think the reason i did this was to avoid buying a bad game and not taking the risk, ive recently bought a couple games that were on sale and was gonna miss out on a game that looked really cool simply bc those games were rated really well and that i could get like 3 games at the price of the game i wanted, since watching this its helped me realize this and im gonna go ahead and buy the game i think looks more enjoyable and buy it
Glad to hear it! I hope it helps 👍
I love this more relaxed approach. Keeping an overly detailed google sheet was stressing me out.
We don’t do stress here 😊
i used to have a problem with backlog too.
That’s good to hear. Most important thing is to enjoy these things 😊
i see it like this: the issues is thinking there is an issue in the first place. it's a matter of how we think and look at things.
dont judge, dont let outside factors influence you. only now exists. like said in the video, play what u want to play. and point of playing is getting a satisfaction out of it. a backlog doesn't actually exist, neither any obligations. when u become free of neurotic thinking patterns of have tos and should 'ves that steer u from outside, u can simply enjoy now, from inside.
Here is how I view it and act on it:
- I view my games as a collection and library.
Here are the games I'm playing right now:
Lies of P (PS5)
Control (PC)
Resident Evil: Village VR (psvr2)
Resident Evil 4 [2023] VR (psvr2)
Final Fantasy 3: Pixel Remaster (switch)
Gran Turismo 7 (psvr2)

13 games is crazy, I can understand 2 to 3 games but damn.
Honestly if I hadn’t started this project I’d still be forgetting that 😂
For sure, I have about 6 games started. I ended up liking 1 more than the others so I've been playing that non-stop. Some games will catch you and won't let go but you've got to attempt to play it before you'll know.
Exactly this
The be aggressive clip had me dying!
Thanks buddy! I hope it helps you, I’ve cleared so many games this way that I’ve actually been able to justify a new one 😂
I’m glad to hear this is working for. Happy gaming to you too my friend 👍
Might have to adopt that drawing idea! Never heard of that one before 👍
@@backlogbaldie yeah it’s pretty fun. Gives my ADHD a bonus little reward for finishing a game lol.
Your approach to your backlog seems similar to how I'm tackling mine. You touched on a couple of the same things i said in my most recent video on it. Have fun! It’s all about the fun
Couldn’t agree more 👍
I have games in my backlog I don't want to play but I like the idea of playing them.
Can heavily relate to the last part😓
One thing that kind of helps to me is to just spend at least one hour every day to my project
Like when i find myself in a position that day where i'm not really doing anything and am not in the mood to do anything (like clearing my gaming backlog) i just start a 1 hour timer on my phone and start brainstorming about my project
Ofc it only works when i don't forget it🫠
What I do, I have two cupboards the right is filled with games I still have to play. The left is all the games I have played. I pick games from the right cupboard and see it shrink. Way more relaxingz
I love this! 👍👍👍
I once heard a youtuber (jpsears) say: If its not a hell YES! Its a hell No! Really helps diecide weather to play a game or not.
my techniques:
Give the game an hour or 2, if it doesn't catch your interest or annoy you, just delete.
Started this video without expecting much and was pleasantly surprised. Thank you
I get that a lot 😂 glad you enjoyed!
My super power is being immune to backlogs; my secret? I know my mindset will be “damn what should I play?” No matter how many games I have
hell yeah good for you
I made a promise not to buy new games until i get a certain number of my list. I've been enjoying indie demos so much lately i don't know if I'll ever buy a new game.
I feel that. Haven’t bought a new game in 4 months and counting.
Thank you for the video! You are a very good youtuber and I think you deserve more subscribers
Thank you! 😊
i am new to your channel and i love your channel. it's simple and understandable and most of all- helpful
Thank you! Welcome aboard 🙂
9:00 you won my heart when you put Hogwarts legacy with FFIX soundtrack. amazing video
Thank you 😊
My approach to the backlog is that I pick a game I want to play and just play it.
Kingdom Hearts is probably the best example you could have given of destination not the journey 😂 hope your injury heals quickly!
Imma tell yall an impopular opinion:
I don't really wanna clear my backlog.
NOW
SOON
LATER
Seems like a good idea.
My problem is that I have games that I want to play and games that I want to play AGAIN. The latter take from me trying out new games. I keep getting back to the old ones that I enjoyed for years.
Sometimes you just gots to have them comfort games my friend 😊
I'm not intending to complete my backlog. I like to keep there as a kind of 'assurance' that I'll always have something new available to play when I feel the need. Everything in my backlog was some kind of super cheap bargain. It serves to protect me from accidentally paying full price for a game on a whim.
I like this approach 👍
Sounds like a good system to me! Best of luck with it 😊👍
Man, that FFIX overworld theme gives me tingles every time I hear it...
Same 😍
Your comment on MGS V hit home. I bounced off that game so hard because the first hour was so tedious that I shut it off and never came back to it.
I spent the first hour mourning the £50 I’d just paid 😂
There definitely isn’t one way to decide which games to play.
My style is
- to not have a backlog
- to have other hobbies - books, movies, exercise, home improvement, taking online courses, etc
I’m very much an “in the moment” person where I might plan to play a series, like Mass Effect LE on January, finish the 1st game, and that’s it for a few months until I get the urge to resume the series.
I have probably 300 game in my backlog but I will probably finish them in 10 years because I finish a lot of game every year around 30-45 games a year.

Nice job 👍
I have my steam categories organized by the average Time to beat, but at this point I use a random number generator to decide my games most of the time. It has been pretty fun to do it that way while still having my 2 multiplayer games I play.
The part about replaying mass effect a hundredth time is too real
There is also a wedge between playing an online game you love/hate, and an offline game you are mildy amused by.
Incredibly based video, thank you.
The best solution is just stop adding new games to your backlogs. I made the mistake of jumping into sales and buying lot of games, some I don't even remember I already owned. So really, let's just stop checking steam sales or PS sales and just buy that one game that we really want
I've seen a lot of people saying they liked Red Dead Redemption more than 2, definitely don't mind more opinions on this.
Playing a game for just an hour is good, but I would even say 20 minutes is good for determining what to play next. It's surprising how much information you can get from a game just by getting your hands on it.
Me: Let's start on that backlog.
Also me: Or I could replay Skyrim or FF8 😂
I never learn, but I love those games and try not to feel guilty for enjoying games I love.
I really need to approach my backlog in a relaxed way...
Lately I've been clearing a massive chunk of it but it feels so much like a job and not a fun activity 😢
A hobby should never feel like work 😕 I hope you’re able to find a more relaxed balance
I'm a spreadsheet addict and even that spreadsheet part made me wince. You do you though.
I also don’t stick with games that I’m not feeling. If I don’t like it why force it when I’ve got other stuff to play?
This 👍👍
My best solution to this is not buying new games.
In 2024 i only bought 1 indie game.
I only buy a new game when i finish 3-4 from my backlog.
I look at a “backlog” as a cornucopia of choice. I will never run out of exciting games to play. It’s a pretty darn good problem to have. A friend of mine plays only a few select genres of games and always struggles to find something to get him interested. I think that’s a much more difficult position to be in.
I love this! I’m sure I’m not alone in saying I’d give anything to be able to think this way

I just started getting through my back log and this popped up on my recommended feed. I’m scared of RUclips sometimes.
At this point I’m like 99% sure the internet can hear our thoughts
Also it's because i'm an adult and I constantly have worries about life and my future which doesn't help as well
Adulting is brutal. Love the Trails series tho. So criminally underrated!
I say this joke, with love, and knowing in the mind when you have buried yourself so deep with anxiety ruminating on this list for so long, building it to a point where you feel it will collapse over you, that it doesnt seem this simple, and that's okay.
But "Huh, if I play my games in my backlog, i don't have as many games in my backlog!"
Like, Yeah.
You also dont have to finish any you arent enjoying, it really do be that simple.
The love and understanding is appreciated, and the joke is definitely not lost on me 😂😂
I enjoyed the 100 hours I spent on Shin Megami Tensei V and the challenge it provided.
See it as a game, not a project.
It clicked now, thanks.
I play a game if the gameplay is fun and don't really care about the story (some exceptions like Infamous Second Son). I also stop playing a game when I think I've had my fun with the game before or after the credits roll.
There is something fun that I started doing to solve this 😂,
I add like 5 games that i am interested in at the moment to a spin and the game that comes is instantly played no questions, adds some curiosity to which game i would play.
Loving this! 👍
I liked your point about not feeling guilty about replaying a game you love, over starting something new. Why do you have to feel bad about doing something you enjoy/want to do?
Exactly 😊
Sometimes does anyone else feel it’s the games fault I don’t want to finish it
a way how i guide myself to complete games is to do all achievements on Xbox/Steam or trophies on PS
Disagree with the 'play at least an hour'. For games with long intros (e.g. your example of MGSV) sure. But for the majority of games? The intro is very similar to the rest of the game and no point forcing yourself to play a game.
A problem is already to watch videos about games... 😏
(...seriously, we must appreciate what is given to us, that we have, we find, that brings us good...
...rather than what we should have, find, that may be far from it...)
(...ultimately it is us who matters.)
8:32 Notes for One Piece made me lol
Easy to see why the show is so popular 😂
since I'm not a game streamer, so I don't need to actually force myself playing a newly released game
I can focus on the games that I'm currently playing, and saving myself some money for buying those games later~ I mean, those games are not going anywhere right?
@@backlogbaldie Thanks for the tip :)
Longer games can really be a slog to get though XD
*Life Is A Marathon* 👌
Sounds like a good system! Have seen a few people using those wheels now, seems like a good idea 👍
What movie is at 6:32 ?
The Duff
Ok my back log isn't too bad may have like under 200 games and besides a couple games left that I want to collect which is like maybe 5 ...maybe I'm just taking the approach of playing one game at a time.
My problem isn't starting games, but grinding out the last few trophies for the platinum. I have close to 20 games all completed with one or two trophies left that I just can't bring myself to do, even though I like the game. 😅
TY
Now i don't feel guilty for uninstalling FF: stranger of paradise
Happy to help. In fairness that one was a struggle at times!
First I just look for bigger file size games that won’t take as long.
I dunno if you'll ever read this comment but how many games can I play? A limit of two or just focusing on one is the way to go?
I read every comment 😉 play as many games as you like dude, it’s your life. My advice would be if you start to feel stressed by the number, scale it back until you feel comfortable.
i like your games posters collection. where do you collect them from?
They’re screenshots from backlog tracker.com. You made me wonder for a minute there cos I do have lots of game wall art but I didn’t remember putting any in this video 😂
@@backlogbaldie thanks a lot. your videos are great👌🏻🤌🏻
The last game that consumed me was RDR2. Played it every time I could, even for just 20 minutes. Ever since finishing it, I haven’t had that same passion. It’ll come back one day when the right game catches me at the right time. After all, it’s just a hobby. And not even a very healthy one
I’ve only just recently started red dead 2 and I can completely understand this. It’s stunning in every way possible.
This is helping me 😂❤😢😅😮😊
Steam sales aren't making it any easier on me.
Truth 😂
I got a PlayStation backlog for platinums and I honestly just want to find another hobby and throw my consoles away 😂 less is more, too many games and consoles makes me depressed
Sounds like gaming might not be for you anymore buddy 😕
