Having been trained as a mathematician and an engineer myself, _of course_ I'll take exception to Dirk's remark that Dutch engineers aren't good outside of water management ;) I'll cite agricultural engineering (Wageningen University) and our electronics / chip manufacturing equipment industry (Philips / ASML ) as counterexamples.
Thanks for being an engineer!!! I think engineers are super cool! I used have a few engineer friends in America. I think the work of engineers is under appreciated. Sadly, it seems most of the time engineers only get recognized when things go wrong.
The largest flood was the St Elisabethsflood in the late middle ages. 20.000-50.000 people died then (only 1 million inhabitants then!). The whole Dutch state is built on water management since the year 1000 (approx.). That is why feudalism did not take hold here. Groups op people "made" their own land. That, in turn caused the Dutch to become very independent minded, resulted in a different reciprocity of authorithy than in the rest of Europe (no feudalism), this resulted in the longest war of independence mankind has ever known up to now (which became a proto world war), and voilà, the Dutch state. The Delta works were technically so groundbreaking, that it can be compared to the Apollo project that put a man on the moon. It certainly cost around the same amount of money. That is why you pay "waterschapsbelasting" (tax for the water board, the oldest form of government we have). And don't worry, you can also still vote for waterboard representatives if you are Dutch. No taxation without representation!
That is so sad. I am really thankful for all the amazing people that figured out water management so that such disasters can be avoided. I am very happy to pay all the taxes I do to the "waterschapsbelasting."
Just watched the whole video. As a foreigner it must be surprising to hear about the mills and their function. Dirk spoke only about 'polder'-mills unfortunately, to pump water out of areas. To keep us from flooding or make land dry. But there are quite a lot of mills with other functions. For example a corn-mill. The wind makes 2 round stones twist on each other to grind the corn. to use it for bread etc. Other windmills are used for the industry. The wind just make blades spin and they can make other things move en engineering can use it for anything. :)
Dirk probably didn't talk much about the Windmills being mills to me as I already knew about the milling of grains in them.I didn't know about the water pumping function. What are the other industrial functions outside of milling grains and pumping water?
@@knowingthenetherlands662 some other function are: sawing of wood, but mostly its used for crushing things. Mustard seeds (mustard mill) oil out of seeds (oil mill) raw materials for color (paint mill) I am no expert, google is a good friend;)

Each US state will ask on the voter registration if you want to declare a party. They ask this for voting in the primaries. You can only vote in a primary if you are registered for that party. It’s to mitigate people from other parties messing with the election of your party’s candidate.
