Amsterdam turned a street into a park

- [Ep. 991] Amsterdam is reconstructing its city centre streets. There is more space for people walking and cycling and the city adds a lot of green. This is thenew mini-park in Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal that was opened in June 2022. More information in the blog post: bicycledutch.wordpress.com/?p... Watching Amsterdam's transformation is like watching 50 years into the future for the rest of the world.
Im glad that my city has a project like this in the works, technically a bigger one as the park will be about 600m long,
Hopefully it will look as good as this.
Unfortunately most cities probably won't ever be this nice.
more like "nah that's unachievable utopia fantasy"
While building yet more streets and parking areas, while removing bike lanes, since they take up too much space 😂... 😅😢
I hope not in every way! Overall, I prefer Berlin.
if you think amsterdam is impressive. Other works in the netherlands might impress you even more in regard of reconstruction of infrastructure.
In America we turn parks into awful highways

Sadly yes a lot of historic properties were demolished to build shitty highways but highway removals are popping up and the highway removal of bostons inner loop got turned into a park but sadly it was all constructed before boston adopted the policy to build raised protected bike lanes on every road that gets build or redesigned.
D.C. now has a law stating that any road undergoing maintenance or anything else involving the state or city needs to get bike lanes which is obviously a big W
Well it used to be a canal. It was filled up late 1800. I wish they had brought back the old canal. Its now a dull street.
I know and its soul crushing
Here in Florida the long-term planning to deal with traffic is just keep adding more lanes
And Florida is so flat, it would be excellent for cycling.
Unfortunately, the reason for the destroyed patches of grass between the tram tracks is due to confused taxis and other car drivers following the tram tracks instead of the new lanes. AT5 had an item on this a while back, but I can't find it anymore.
Yeah it was lush and green when they finished the upgrade, I live just on the end of this street, just noticed today that they've put some painted islands to direct cars away from the tracks, hopefully it should fix the problem, clueless drivers keep thinking they can just drive through the grassy tracks lmao
Sweet of you to say the taxis were confused. Me being a grumpy old man have a sneaky suspicion they just didn't care. ;-)
So 020 taxis get confused and end up on the grass? Best they don't operate in 010 then and all its green tram tracks. 😅
Sorry about the 020 010 remark. Amsterdam is a beautiful city. Just had to say it. 😜
Everyone's talking about how lovely and beautiful this work is, but what blows me away is the fact that they got it done in 18 months. 18 months! It would've taken 18 months just to clear community planning in the US!
Exactly! My city in the Denver metro region has had a "town square" project stuck in the planning phase since 2009. Supposed to finally break ground this year, but I'm not holding my breath!
Oh don’t worry, we have aloooot of NIMBYs in NL
I'm pretty sure he is talking about realisation only. In the Netherlands we are quite slow (thorough) on planning as well.
@@XKS_ i believe the problem in the USA is that cities aren't allowed to change roads/streets without going into discussion and getting premission from a majority of community members ("community planning"). Here you need to actively fight the city instead. which is a good thing 9 out of 10 times, because infrastucture specialist know better, than ignorant ordinary people.
ruclips.net/video/zJlB4eVv2F8/видео.html&ab_channel=AlexDavis for reference
The planning stages are just as slow if not slower but once building starts the Netherlands generally has an approach to build fast with lots of people and equipment. That costs more money but also causes shorter disruption to roads or cities which is important in a densely populated country like the Netherlands.
Thanks for this reporting. I hope the grass between the tram tracks will grow and flourish.
In Den Haag (The Hague) it has always been that way, trams crossing through a green park, the tracks almost invisible between the grass around and in between..
Well Amsterdam is really outdated with its infrastructure compared to other cities and towns since the city didn’t invest enough.
It is because a lot of cars try to drive on the tram tracks, which cause the mudbad between the tracks. ''Het Parool'' has written an article about it already: "Het Postzegelpark: de grasmat is een modderbad, de fontein een vuilnisbak".
Needs a diverse range of different hardy grass types
I actually thought it was done on purpose to show pedestrians that they need to pay attention there 😅
I have lived in the Eastern Europe for most of my life. It looked pretty great to me even before the renovation. Now it’s simply brilliant.
Found you from not just bikes, gotta say I love this redesign and I wanna visit amsterdam when its done just to see these cool new integrated parks
Cup of koffie and your soothing narration make for nice woensdag morning vibes
Don't worry the grass will come back and our city gardeners know what they have to do to make it come back. There are many examples of 'green' tram tracks in the city of Amsterdam.
The Netherlands as a whole has been prioritizing more public dense spaces more greenery and local amenities by foot or bike over cars.
Recently there was a discussion about turning two misplaced parking spaces at a train station, surrounded by three parking garages, into a mini park. The CDU (Germany's car lobby party) was so upset that the plans were quickly abandoned.
Very impressive, i wish more cities, especially in developing countries, would look towards cities like Amsterdam instead of American cities
And can you imagine that just over 100 years ago this street was a canal.

Such a beautiful concept..pretty much the only green in cities here🇬🇧 is that of our envy!
Not really, we also have green bins everywhere
I am so jealous. Here in the UK it's so hard to get any bike infrastructure built, and in the few cases where it does get built, people still clamour to rip it out and put it back the way it was. It doesn't help that the infrastructure that does get built is often full of problems, like the designer hasn't ridden a bicycle in over 20 years and sees them as a children's toy. Oh and let's not forget the sustainable travel budget was recently cut by two thirds!
God I hate this country.
By accident i walked here two weeks back and was amazed by the look of it. Very nicely done..

Fun fact: the large dark building in front of the park is the headquarters of Guerilla Games: the creators of the Horizon Playstation franchise!
Their facade could do with some greening, make it blend in with the little park...

Would this type of road layout cause longer response times for emergency services as they would have to drive slower?
Did you saw any traffic jam on the video ? People walking and biking means less cars, and when an emergency vehicle comes it is easy for bikes to let it pass.
Does Amsterdam host parades and such? I feel like these streets would be great to see street vendors lined up or people waiting to see a parade walk by
Parades in Amsterdam are done on boats in the canals :-)
Dunno why I watch these as my country will NEVER do this
What's the building at 0:55? It looks like it might be a cafe.
I was wondering why the bike lane had brick paving. Apparently it's to mark it as a shared street.
That building used to ba public toilet for men and (rare, unfortunately) women. It may have originated as something else, though. [my doubt]
Needs more water features... feels a bit dry. As for the grass issue, needs a diverse range of different hardy grasses. Think permaculture. Helps if the terrain is made slightly bumpy like some mini hills.
That's very nice!
Living in the United States just the propositation of this would cause massive backlash from some members of the community. What kinds of residential backlash is experienced in NL.?

@@dutchman7623 why are they forbidden?
Well they are not that popular here compared to electric mopeds or ebikes, and are (still) not allowed. Online I read "there are no regulations in the Netherlands regarding electric scooters. As a result, it is not possible to obtain approval for certain e-scooters."
@@symbolsandsystems All modes of transport on Dutch roads have to be approved by law. Even toys have to be within the safety rules.

the gras between the tram tracks looks like that because, yes really, cars. they drive over the tram tracks part. I have seen it.
It's completely possible if you can rely upon your public transport. In my city (Kyiv, Ukraine) public transport has been being gradually deteriorated for the last 30 years. But the worst thing is that the transport service stopped for several months at the eve of corona lockdown 3 years ago and at the first months of the war a year ago. Hence, by any means we simply can't trust public transport, we are heavily depended on cars here. Even if the public transport becomes impeccable in the distant future (which is highly unlikely), how can we expect that it wouldn't be shut down at some critical point?
Why can't you rely on your bike?
How can you expect that you wouldn't be allowed to ride your car at some critical point? How do you think what gonna happen to the streets of Kyiv if everyone start to drive?
As far as i know, public transport in Kyiv became a bit better than 30 years ago: new subway stations (don't get me wrong, it's about dozen of them), new trams and busses, 30 years ago Kyiv didn't have shuttle buses etc, now it's entire fleet of them, new urban rail loop transit by electric train. Ok, it's not as good as it could be, but who is responsible for that? Don't you have like democratic elections of the city mayor, parliament and so on?
the end of communism destroyed eastern europe
In the photos about the war, people always look to familiar things. So people are shocked by a crying gran or a young boy with a toy or something. Of course the pictures from Bucha were terrible, but the ones of older gentlemen lying next to their bikes...
They were just out riding. How could a cyclist be a threat to a tank?
Anyway, the Netherlands has already promised to help with rebuilding after the war & i sincerely hope that whichever city the Dutch delegation go to, they take the CROW manual with them & convince the local politicians of the importance of good cycling infrastructure. The fact that Ukrainians even cycle during the war means there is a base to start from.
Most car journeys in the USA, the most car infested place on the planet, take less than 5 kilometres. That is a distance one can easily cycle. And bikes are highly reliable.
In California this would be illegal.
The place where I come from is heavily car-infested, and one of the complaints I hear when talking about pedestrianized street (other that parking space) is loud noise from inconsiderate people going on all the night.
how do you deal with this in the netherlands? are noise law more strictly enforced? are the building better soundproofed? are people quieter in general?
In Canada, there is a new movement against the 15 minutes cities. Anything like that in the Europe?
I know in the UK there is a movement against the 15 minute cities. And it's because the people don't trust the government anymore.
We do have it indeed. At least here in Spain, some people are ultra-fixated on having cars since they believe investing on public transportation and building pedestrian & bike friendly cities is communism apparently. This new right wing does nothing but import these ideas from the US and their car-based societies. It's saddening and discouraging to hear those arguments.
@@egalvezdl, thanks. I feel the same.
Nothing big, but yes, the right wingers also importet that. Such a pain.
I feel like this is particularly common the UK since there is a general opposition to traffic restrictions (see opposition in Oxford, Canterbury, etc.) and with the recent popularity of 15 Minute Cities, they now have a name to discredit these plans ("They want us to limit in a radius of 15 minute walking! You will own nothing and be happy!"). It also is propagated in Poland as well, though, and won't be surprised if it's propagated by any car friendly (understatement) group (in my case, the far-right AfD).
i love grassy tram tracks. call me odd for that.
they create less noise as well. I am with you on that
Ok, I'll call you odd. You're right, but odd 🙂
It’s a good idea but it would nice to see more space for nature. The amount of ‘stuff’ littering the street is terrible. Signs, benches, planters, mini houses(?) bins, fences poles. All put together it looks messy. Still, a lot better than a load of cars I guess.
Agreed.
Stop making other countries look miserable!
They’ll follow in a few years, cause we need to.
@@miles5600I hope you're right
The Netherlands is at a stage that we prioritize all the knowledge we've build up to make places more desirable for the public.
We are just focusing on ourselves do improve our own environment, if other countries cannot do that, then they can learn from our own example.
We have a philosophy to build more nature inclusive places with biodiversity, that means that we build houses and public infrastructure around nature and animals like birds and ducks etc.
@@Siranoxz exactly, i had the same thoughts and I don’t get why we don’t team with other countries to improve their design.
@@miles5600 That depend on these other countries, they have to ask us if they want or need our help.
Your trams are so quiet.
I have surveyed this street well before the reconstruction. A big part of why this street was perfect for experimentation is because there actually is not much activity there. Despite being in the heart of the city it was and likely still is a street full of low profile money laundering businesses, and roaming junkies from the nearby shelter. There are hardly trucks that have to make stops there. Servicing on this moldy and crumbling street is done by the occasional tradesman, rather than construction teams in other parts of the city. Nothing big ever takes up this wide reaching area for more than a few minutes.
The main traffic participants have always been cyclists heading to Central Station. The flow out of the station actually heads via side streets. As going into Nieuwezijds means you are besides taxi's, and trams further down. The street is a stretch with very little pull. Your car GPS takes you there, and again if you take a wrong turn. By why else would you be there? On you go, skip the underground parking, good visibility of street crossers. Get down far enough and you see the back of a major landmark. So you know not to try and park or stop around there. It was never the toughest street by car or any means. It was even a bit misleading because you expect chaos as soon as you break from from the major attractions at both ends.
And the amount of actual residents seems skewed to the low end, like in many area's that had an AirBnB boom. But the AirBnB culture here is dwindled. Only a few were allowed to continue. Old and crumbling houses with awkward subdivisions are often vacant. And unlike commercial real estate, there are no lights on or window dressing to mask around that. During rush hour in the morning, hardly anyone appears from these buildings. They try some tricks to make it seem desirable by planning the rental viewings at once so there is a queue outside. But the amount of cancelations on signing leases was staggering. The more serious landlords have resorted to preferring expats whom they can charge extra, and can be expected never to know or act on their legal rights. It is a tough neighborhood to fill long term. Livability is lessened by the disturbances on the street at night. A lot of dealing and arguments happen. Especially within range of the police station. This is aided by how desolate the street can be, despite the rent prices being like that of more livable areas.
Many remaining locals just don't invite people from outside of Amsterdam. The majority of Dutch just don't want to take the train more than once a year. And neither want to pay for parking. So the connection to Amsterdam is lost for anyone outside of the metropolitan area. This street will never be proper for a lively school, church, or other public amenity. Theft of bikes and property is so high that is is an absolute. You will see someone steal something if you stand and watch for fifteen minutes.
A few unlawful hotels got shut down which really took out quite a big part of the groups who would be lingering on sidewalks. The coffeeshops further up to Central Station remain hot spots. And then the main destination was the pricey AH grocery store. There's a department store called Magna Plaza. But unlike the money launderers, the stores there kept going out of business. As there are a few customers, but with the high rent there is no surviving it. A few gems remain, like tattoo parlors, and flagship stores. But they could have turned this entire street into a canal and nothing much would've changed. Traffic has always been minimal, flowing from North, down to turn in to the West rather than South across this renovated area.
There is so much more to a city needs than just traffic flow. This renovation was a nice bandaid and a refreshing move. And policing has gone well since Corona. But the heart of it Nieuwezijds is just the neglected real estate portfolio of a few retired criminals and investors. Ownership has not done this area well.
Let's face it: Amsterdam is dead. There is now a theme park in its place, also called Amsterdam.
As for the real estate: we need far more sensible rules around rental properties than we have now; especially the latest ones. Expect many many more properties to stand empty; this is already happening in the Hague: almost all landlords are selling or sitting on their properties. Rental is not profitable anymore.
Ziet er veel mooier uit nu idd
again dutch make our city jealous!
According to At5 and the locals it is a maintenance nightmare, especially the concrete tub thing accumulates trash and is difficult to keep clean. Also people keep driving their car through the green tramline, creating ruts and sometimes getting stuck.
haha, I thought both, I am good! Also the concrete thing looks bad. Why is there always some artsy thing that is just plainly stupid just from looking at it? If you wanted something round, just put a normal round bench there. Or even some "natural" stones where people can sit on.
It is hardly a surprise that this "green island" is a high maintenance area.
As for the low level seating space doubling as a trash receptacle, that is where the focus of the cleaning crew has to be. Keep it simple.

We have something similar to this in Buenos Aires, Argentina. We have a very important lack of green spaces, so a couple of these “linear parks” as they are calling them here, have started construction. Our streets aren’t as curvy and natural looking as this one, they are straight lines. So it doesn’t look as good. They basically took one or two lanes from the street and made a green walkway with trees, benches and grass.
Straight or curvy, that's progress. Enjoy it!

The grass didn't survive because a lot of assholes in big SUV's kept driving over it illegally. So every time it's resown it will get destroyed again, unless some nice planks with nails in them prevent that, I think.
