    As someone who grew up poor and had nothing, these videos are great and continue to be great, Larry. Ive always enjoyed them and continue to make struggle meals because they take so much heart and soul to make. Cooking is a labor of love, you always find a way.

      The costs here are crazy, I'm paying $8.10 a gallon for gas, 8.87 for diesel/fuel oil(used to fire up the stoves most of us use here in Alaska) I wonder if Joe Biden is struggling to make ends meet like us. Id rather see a Country led by someone who grew up having nothing because they would think of how much people have to struggle to live but seems like I don't mind because I feel a sense of great satisfaction and peace at the end of the day.

      No he doesn't know what it is to struggle and he's not the cause of your struggle either. Corporate greed is why the cost of everything has skyrocketed. COVID put things on pause but it hasn't costed grocery stores or gas stations half as much as it cost the average consumer especially those of us living paycheck to paycheck

      @@yippee8570 We do. The only reason they're paying that much is because they're in Alaska and it's one of the most expensive places to live in the country. They just brought it up because they wanted to blame their hardships on Biden instead of corporate greed and their own choices.

    I myself am in a struggling position. Roommate made chicken drumsticks two nights ago. I saved a bone from it and tried boiling it for the fat and marrow. Made the whole kitchen smell like home made soup. I added my ramen to it and that like leg bone added a rich tasting and creamy texture to the broth. Almost forgot I was eating .50 cent ramen.

      If you can get frozen vegetables on clearance sale , it would be even better . I always throw in a some frozen vegetables and whatever protein I can find and add it in my instant ramen . It makes a more balanced meal . Just use what you need and no wastage .

      The frozen vegetables are high priority just behind buying more beans. If I can get money I'll be watching Walmart sales and stocking up when I can get there. I also am surprised what you can do with a big can of tomato soup. One can made about 6 portions of spaghetti and chicken and the rest I converted to chilli.

    Dried beans, as well as dried (chick)peas and lentils are absolutely amazing. They keep unrefrigerated for ages as long as they're kept dark and dry. They're very nutritious and healthy. They have plenty of flavour and are very versatile.
    You just can't beat them in terms of dollar value. They're usually pretty affordable at the local supermarket. But the real value is buying online in bigger bulk. You can safely do that, due to how well and easily they keep.

    One piece of advice I'll give to anyone struggling is learn to make biscuits from scratch. You can eat them with butter or jelly, make a breakfast sandwich, cover in gravy, and crumble up into soups when they dry out. Very filling, fairly cheap food.
    These soups look delicious, by the way!

    For the people who are upset that the serving size won't fill them, you aren't supposed to eat until you feel full with every meal. If you eat the recommended servings for most foods then you will feel satiated but not full. The problem of eating until you feel full is that overtime your body will adjust and it will take more and more food to make you feel full. I went from obese to just overweight by just eating the recommended amounts of food.

      Plus it's better for your body to eat smaller meals, even if you then eat an additional small meal or snack later. I have pancreas issues and its been a lot easier on my digestion to eat more small meals then fewer large meals.

    My go to for years has been cans of cream corn, water, a bag of peas and carrots, eggs, and as much noodles/pasta/bread as needed. Pretty fast and still budget friendly.

    One of my favorites, which I just made yesterday, is a couple of pounds of cheap chicken, a couple of bags of frozen vegetables, a couple of whole onions, and a cup or so of dried lentils in an Instant Pot. Thick, hearty, tasty, and you can season it however you like...I did curry powder this time to give it a bit of kick.

    Something that works just fine as a meat in any recipe is cubed spam, a tinned ham, or corned beef. Im in western Canada, and cheap meat is hard to come by. Ive used a cheap tin of ham for split pea soup, ham and potato soup, and good old fashioned pease pudding....which can also be used as sandwich filler when its cold.

      I’ve found that smoked sausage works really well in split pea soup too. Bacon works well in a pinch too... anything salty and smoky.

    Pea and ham soup is my favorite. A nice drop off heavy cream in it and some bread and butter for dipping. Lovely jubbly!!

    If you saute the onions, carrots and celery before adding them to the soup, it can add more flavor without increasing cost. Now you have made me crave some homemade soup! Great video!

    With Christmas ham about to be on many families menus... Ham, cabbage and potato soup is a great way to serve up those ham scraps, use the ham bone.... And it's cheap!

    My aunt always made a 5 gallon pot of soups,chicken and noodle soup,soup beans ,then Chile with the leftover beans,that's how everyone enjoy different meals and the next few days the other aunts and my mom would make the rest of the weeks meals it was more the merrier and nice visiting too. Cause mother was one 11 sibbleings and all their children. Dad and uncle would hunt all meat that was in season,mom cleaner everything then fried smothered them too make gravy over home grown mashed potatoes,canned green beans and more milk gravy for potatoes. And if we had extra blackberries mom made a big pan of cobbler. Boy were those the days if togetherness of families. Now everyone has gone their own ways leaving the big family's at a lost.

    Making some beans with leftover ham bone today! Perfect timing! Cleaned my ham roasting pan over the hob with water to get extra flavor from the pan scrapple and threw that in too. Smelling great! Might crack in a few eggs during the last 20 minutes or so of cooking as well for even more nutrition! Food prices crazy! I was thrilled today to be able to head out to the garden and grab some "volunteer" winter greens that self -seeded from last years harvest to serve as a side with my ham! Thankful for small blessings.

    Looks great! Rice is cheap and really extends the bean soup for a few more pennies. Add about a cup of rice and some red pepper flakes. Just add the rice and cook on low for 30 minutes. I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work!

    I grew up eating a lot of homemade soups! Also ate lots of cooked beans with hog jowl; smoked sausage,etc!! These simple dishes always kept us full and satisfied!!! Thanks for the videos, Larry❤❤❤❤❤ Emily W😊😊😊

    I get all of my canned goods, dry pasta, rice, and dry beans at dollar tree. Just check the sale by date. Even check the spice aisle. Tons of savings.

    Sup Larry, great inspirational, well discussed recipes 👊. I never drain the beans, add salt after cooked.. forget the trolls, they probably get food from church and throw out what don't like, especially dry beans, lentils. Been making a soup or stew every week in crockpots, as you know just ingredients have around,and I can't stand by stove long anymore, keep up the great work, 🙏, tyvm

    Probably my favorite resource for making chicken broth is L.B. Jamison Chicken Soup Base, available at my local supermarket. It's drier than "Better than Bouillion", so releases from the measuring spoon more easily, plus provides much more broth for the price (91 cups vs. 56 cups). I'm currently using a jar of Knorr Chicken Bouillion powder, which is OK (and available in bulk from Costco & Sam's Club), but saltier than either the L.B. Jamison or the "Better than Bouillion". Canned/boxed broth is more convenient, but also more expensive and bulkier to store, so I only buy it when I am planning to use it in a specific dish in the near future (and am feeling too lazy to combine bouillion/soup base with water!).

    Getting hard to get a pound of dried beans for around $1. Pound of pintos at Dollar Tree is $1.25 and it’s hard to do much better. Some Walmart beans are under $1.50 a pound, though.
    I used to buy on-sale frozen turkeys, thaw them, and grind the meat. The first time I didn’t notice those thin bony tendons or whatever they were in the legs, and so I got some crunchy ground meat!

      Do you have a Food 4 Less nearby? I got 3 lb of pinto beans for $1 they come in a Big bin so you have to scoop them yourself into a bag, which is nice though because you can get exactly as much where as little as you want.

    Homemade soups and biscuits were always on the menu when i was a kid. The only bread my dad would eat were homemade biscuits made from scratch. My mother was a great cook. Oh the memories.

    Hello Larry I made this soup using some leftover turkey that I chopped and since I didn't have the stock or broth I used ketchup 1/2 cup to 2 cups water. I put everything in my crock pot cooking it on low about 3hrs. It turned out great.

    I learned from my father if you leave the wood spoon in the pot when you get it up to boil the spoon will bounce around and BEAT THE MUSIC Out of them !!!LOL! I KNOW better now. That was 60 years ago!!

    Like you, I don't like the cold. I grew up in poverty and my mom could make some filing and tasty soups and each of these would be great during the winter whether one is poor or not. Much appreciated

    I'm not struggling, but I do have a budget. These videos are very helpful. And for those who just HAVE to mention the shortcomings of the ingredients, consider this a starting point and adjust things to your specific requirements 👍If cans have too much sodium, get fresh or frozen. Just stop assuming that everyone has the means to do so.

    I usually cook the noodles separately in water with bullion cubes. This lets me eat the soup over several days without the noodles getting all yucky.

    Saute those vegetables in butter, bacon grease or olive oil to release more flavor then add abit of water to the pan add the vegetables and liquid to the soup pot. Barley flakes make a great thickener and add a grain. If you have a bulk food store look into the options in grains they in combo with beans make a complete protein and can add variety for a really cheap cost.

    I used to work at a place that had a company cafeteria with a cook and hot line. On ham day I would always ask if I could have the shank. More often than not they would save it for me. That was at no cost.

    In all honesty if you want to be full a simple solution and pretty cheap at least in my opinion. Just think soup needs bread and making homemade bread is pretty cheap and you can use it to soak up the juice in the soup. I don't know if you made homemade bread but if it falls under cheap maybe adding a episode

    I didn't know we were poor, growing up i didn't have much just a few clothes but i kept clean, no toys or anything but i was happy because my parents were happy but id hear my mom crying alot before my birthdays and Christmas. I got clothes but my mom and dad gave me tools as i got older and i still got them. Rich people seemed to treat me badly but now look at their kids no jobs just living off them. I love hardwork it gives me the best feeling at the end of the day and i love the old style of struggle meals because they are made with love. I was invited to others dinners a few times but... i never tasted any love in their foods like they took things for granted. These are great ideas Mr. Wolf and my appreciation for what my parents did for me which im paying them back 10 fold because of my realization of how we grew up. Thanks mom and dad for a great childhood!

    When you said that you could eat stewed tomatoes out of a can, I decided to heat a can of them on the stove with a little salt, lots of pepper and a dash of oregano. They were delicious. Just delicious.

    I invested in a stovetop pressure cooker last year - it's been super useful in cooking beans (and a lot of other stuff but I generally use it for beans). pre-soaked beans cook to tender in approximately 25 minutes at pressure. then once cooked I'll make a soup, or refried beans, etc. really solid gadget, well worth the investment.

    I do luv large batch cooking.
    Just put some in those margarine bowl tupperware and freeze.
    When the kids come complaing about being hungry you can tell em "There's soup in the freezer Chris." 😂

    Hi Larry, I appreciate your struggle meals. I've been there without enough food. It's not that way anymore though. And I'm always on the lookout for a good soup recipe. I can soup in the winter. I'm planning on bean and ham soup over the next week. Thank you for everything that you do.

    The cabbage lentil soup looks and sounds really good. How about adding some mushrooms? Printed recipes with ingredients and insructions in the info section would be very helpful.

    Quick comment. Enjoy the wolf pit. Love the recipes. One thing. The beans need a little baking soda when soaking to take the poot 💨💨💨 off of them. Other than that great video. Pinto great northern and navy beans and hot water cornbread are spot on in the winter. 👍

    I love soups fr, you can make them from anything, like leftovers, its cheap, and you can add water if you want to stretch it

    Every Thanksgiving I take the turkey carcass and make of big pot of rich, hearty turkey soup with chunks the leftover turkey for less than $5. Then I take the ham bone and make a big pot of split pea soup with the leftover ham for less than $5. That's two meals for the whole family for less than $10.

    I use a crockpot cook over night, works great and ready for breakfast or dinner, really easy and good too. Add salt before serving.

    I wish there were a cheaper way to buy celery, especially in small quantities which can be used up before it spoils. Alternatively, I could use more ideas on ways to use up celery.

      For soups and stews and other such cooked uses you can grind raw celery up in the blender and freeze it in ice cube trays...actually pretty handy to have around.

      Rinse it, wrap it tightly in foil, and it will keep for weeks.

      Save the root part of the stalk and put it in water. The middle will continue to grow. It's not much at a time, but it's perfect for a pot of soup!

    To stretch any one of these just a little farther, if you've got an extra 80 cents, you can cut up a can of biscuits into the broth while it's simmering. Those little dumplings are pretty good too.

    Love your show - it is not a question of your integrity - in my opinion, what they might be questioning is that you quite often put a decimal and a cent sign together which means a fraction of a cent - you should do it as the receipt you showed - dollar sign and a decimal showing a fraction of a dollar. So something that is $.50 is 100 times more expensive than something that is .50c or $.0050 PS I quite often put a link to one of your videos in my post SHTF recipe idea shorts I do daily - I think you do a great job of showing rational post SHTF eating

    Except college days, I don't think I ever had to struggle for food. However, I love making meals as nutrient dense as possible for as low cost as possible. It's an ongoing challenge to try to avoid eating out in my country. Food here is cheap and abundant, but so, so unhealthy. It tastes awesome, and all but guaranteed to induce diabetes or high blood pressure.
    Mr WolfePit's conpendium here is an inspirational journey to look at ingredients usually poo-poo'ed by most people. With a little tweaking, it will serve almost any dietary needs, for a really low cost, especially if you use local ingredients.

    Years and years ago, I can remember the day mom set all of us 5 kids down and tried to get us to eat her soup. The 3 kids that were by the windows waited until mom had left the room opened the screens on the window and poured out there bowls. My younger brother drank all his milk except just a little and poured the soup in one of those metal glasses you couldn't see through, you know the ones that were metal and shiny. Me I put so many crackers in mine it became a thick paste and stuck it in the pockets of my shorts. Later my older sister "accidently" dropped the whole pot on the kitchen floor when putting it in the refrigerator. I have never really liked soup, I'd rather pass on dinner than be stuck eating soup. My husband likes it and makes his own mess, he takes cream of mushroom soup water's it down and puts in a box of stuffing. Don't know why it's nasty too. I do like white beans all kinds of beans but, to me that is not a soup, neither is chili which I love and could eat everyday. Thanks for the video

    I usually cook my beans in a slow cooker. No soaking and cook on low for 8 hours or high on 4 to 5 hours. Just cook it over night. I add the spices and vegies 3/4 of the way in the cooking, except potatoes and carrots. they take longer to cook so I add halfway.

    Dear Sir I could not agree with you more about winter. The Chesapeake make for that damp day that will chill you through to the bone. Homemade soups are the best. Split pea is my favorite.

    I love bean soup -- but never have had it with turkey. I try to keep kielbasa around - wonder what that would taste like? I get everyone's bones from whatever we have. Lost out on the turkey carcass and my DIL felt so sorry about it she roasted off a turkey out of her freezer and gave me not only the bones but the dark meat too. Hoping for a nice ham bone come Christmas.

    Sir,
    I enjoy your videos.
    However, I would like to point out a couple of things I've learned about legumes.
    From the reading and research I've been able to do online.
    You should soak your beans, not to reduce gasseous emissions, but to remove phytates that interfere with nutrient absorbtion.
    As a corollary, you definitely do want to discard the soaking water as that will be where the phytates are removed to from the soaked beans.
    Also, a technique I learned from a falafel recipe is to add a teaspoon of baking soda, or powder to the beans while soaking.

    I have never, ever had any luck cooking split peas and having them become soft and creamy. And I love split pea and ham soup.
