    The pricing/quality really fits with Soundgarden's vibe. They were the first of the 'Seattle' bands to get noticed (and make money), but kept a cult status while other 'grunge' bands became superstars. Fans of Soundgarden were really into the music rather than the 'grunge era' hype. Big fan of Kim's playing.

      Well, Soundgarden had (and has) a lot of fans - and many of them came with the "grunge era hype", so I would not generalize like that.
      Not all Soundgarden fans are exactly the same and there is no doubt that their popularity was pushed massively at that time.

    After several SG's, the Kim Thayil is all I ever wanted from an SG-style guitar or guitar for that matter. It's f-in brilliant!

  • @fjcaracap
    @fjcaracap 3 месяца назад +2

    The Kim Thayil signature comes with HB-1 pickups, which have a really nice sound, very warm. They are spec'd very close to the original vintage HB-1's. The lower cost Polara comes with HB-2 pickups, which sound good as well, but not as good to my ear as the HB-1's. The HB-1's also have the two adjustment screws on one side of the pickup, plus one screw on the other side. The HB'2's only have one screw on each side. I owned a '72 Polara S-100, and loved the sound. I didn't care for the Muller roller bridge on the original because the adjustment screws interfered with my picking hand. So having the standard bridge is a plus in my book. Other than the bridge and tuners, this is close to the original.

    The joke for years was that it was an “ugly” SG. I have a ‘73 that I have owned since 1987 when I got it for $200. A friend of mine from a guitar shop called and told me to buy it, that it was the most underrated guitar in the shop. He was right. I love that guitar more than any other.

      By chance does yours have acorns carved into it? When I was in grade 9 or 10 there was a student that used to bring his Guild guitar that looked like a slightly offset SG into the music room at school , plug it into an MXR Distortion + ( the first distortion box I ever saw) and into the school owned Kustom tuck and roll amp complete with 3x15” mammoth speaker cab. I didn’t really like the acorns but even then I thought otherwise it was a beautifully crafted instrument , very likely at least as good as a Gibson, it was obviously of a very high standard. I hope he is still kickin’ and I hope he still has that great guitar.

    I tried one of these in a shop last week and was VERY impressed. It has that dark syrupy vibe that isn't pure SG or Les Paul, and the quality seemed very high. Also, one time I was lucky to play an encore with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks (check them out, along with Malkmus' 90s band Pavement), and I got to play Malkmus' S-100, which is one of the nicest guitars I've ever played.

    • @Tiptronics
      @Tiptronics 9 месяцев назад +1

      Syrupy is a strangely accurate way to describe it.

      I have 99' AAA Bluesbird. It's not comparable to Gibson quality as Gibson would need to go back to the 50's to be on par with Guild it's entire lifespan, even after Fender bought and basically shelved them, spending nearly no money on adverts as well. Anyways, yes, quality beyond what it approximates is the first noticed thing, then you play it to find it beats all comers.

    In the 70s, Guild produced a stripped down version called the S-90... No neck binding or headstock inlays. Just a Guild logo decal on the headstock dot inlays on the neck, one volume one tone and a three-way switch. It was my first "real" guitar and I loved it. Wish I had never sold it. Paid $279, new with a hard shell case.

The only real issue was a bad solder job on one of the pots causing an intermittent grounding issue, but that was a quick fix for me. I did get a good discount on mine, about 675 + tax. But i think youre right, its well worth even its MSRP.

      I have a modern Guild with "HB-1s" not sure if they are the same as the originals. I wasn't in love with them. So I changed them out for some Burstbuckers I got in a trade. I'm not crazy about those either but the guitar is one of the $500 semi-hollows so maybe I just don't like the guitar? I've had an Epi Sheraton I liked better and I'm not an Epi lover or anything.

    So much of neck dive is because of the strap material. A sueded leather strap will do wonders, I’ve found. On the other hand, a nylon strap will cause even a Les Paul’s neck to dive on you.

    Colin so great to see you review one of these! As you said at the beginning of the video what a great guitar! These are indeed great guitars! Have been curious about them for nearly 30 years ever since I saw a pic of Kim Thayil's white one in a guitar magazine back in the mid 1990s. Found one used locally last year. A cherry red one not unlike the Heritage Cherry finish used by Gibson on their SGs. I tried it and it felt and played great! Like the guy that I bought it off of, his tech that set it up for him said this is a great guitar and he couldn't believe how good it felt and played and sounded. It's an amazing guitar and I'd put it up against my 94' SG Standard any day of the week as far as playability, sound and fit and finish are concerned. Mine is like new and came with the Guild gig bag and a factory hardshell case. I got mine for $625 and it was money well spent. Wonderful guitar! Highly recommended!

    Interesting fact, I went to Seattle in the late 80's or early 90's (it was a long time ago so forgive me for not remembering the year 😍). I was a big fan of Soundgarden. Having an interest in the band I learned they were named after a park in the area that had metal sculptures that made melodic sounds as the wind blew through them. Sort of like wind chimes only different. Sounding interesting I went to the park to check it out. It turned out to be a small city park with a few small colorful sculptures that indeed did make sounds when the wind blew.

    For those with neck dive, buy some 1oz adhesive wheel weights. Stick them on the walls in the inside of your control cavity. They fit perfectly and don't interfere with anything. It took two 1 oz ones for my SG. It will change your outlook on a neck dive guitar.

      Honestly though neck dive has never been a thing I've personally had an issue with or even noticed but maybe that's because I'm used to SG's?

      @@theguitaristas Yeah. It's up to you. I have 2 SGs. One had neck dive the other didn't. Just luck of the draw but it works for all guitars. Personally neck dive bugs me so it was a great thing to discover instead of thick straps etc.

    i know how much you love SG style guitars col, have you ever had a look at D'angelico guitars? they do a couple that you might like, ones a single cutaway they other a double cutaway, ones called the Brighton deluxe, the other is the Atlantic deluxe, very underated guitars in my opinion.

    As someone who bought a new 1996 Fender era S-100 back then I thought I might point out a few things that you might not realize when you try out this guitar.
    First, unlike the SG, the input jack is at a satisfactory distance from the tone knobs, so it does not get in your way when you reach with your pinky to adjust the tone, and that is a good thing.
    Second, as Colin said, the neck definitely has a flatter feel to it, so decide if that is a thing that you are okay with over a more rounded baseball bat type of feel.
    Third, when you get past the 15th fret some problems start to happen. The neck begins to take a steep lift to become the rather thick neck heel that is on the same plane as the back of the body. So try playing those uppermost frets and decide if that large neck heel is something you are okay with.
    Fourth, I found the location of the strap button on the edge of the neck heel completely unacceptable. It only took me two or three times when after I moved my hand up to the upper frets and I painfully whacked my lower thumb joint against the strap button that I decided that the strap button had to be moved. My thumb is more important to me than the stock specs of this guitar. I moved the strap button a little more than an inch in towards the body and the problem was solved. I've never hit my thumb joint again, the strap button was now more safely mounted into the body and not into the neck before the glue joint, and there is no discernable increase in neck-dive.
    Fifth, like an SG, the advantage of this guitar is the accessibility of those upper frets compared to a Les Paul type guitar. Those frets are there for you to be played, damn it. So why on earth did Guild decide to not give you side dot fret markers and fretboard inlays on the 19th and 21st frets? Do they want you to get lost when you go flying up there? Some say you should learn where you are by feel and practice and that might be true if this is the only guitar you play, but if you are like me and play different guitars with different scale lengths that might not be so easy to master. And look at that first fret. Like an Epiphone Sheraton you have a side dot fret marker and a huge fretboard inlay where you don't need it but nothing past the 17th fret where it would be a help. It just seems wrong to me, and even more so than on a Sheraton, those S-100 frets are there to be played. I had a luthier install these on the 19th and 21st frets and he did an excellent job and I was amazed with the look and results.
    I am very happy with the way my Polara is now and I hope I have made some valid observations if you are considering buying one of these guitars.

    Guild was an offshoot of the original Epiphone, before the Gibson era. When Epi moved to Philadelphia for business reasons a number of workers chose to stay in NY and build guitars, calling themselves "The Guild" of guitar craftsmen and eventually becoming Guild. I think the brand has been sold a couple times but they're still quality guitars of good value that honor Guild's style and designs. But it's easy to see how the guitar in your video was maybe designed by folks who thought like Epiphone. With Epi prices rising so much, Guilds aren't overly expensive now as nice guitars go. A good addition to your SG collection, for variety. Cheers from Dallas!

    Epi priced me out and I want to thank them for doing so. I've made other choices and have gotten great quality and excellent bang for my buck. I have G.A.S. and my budget is around 2 grand a year. I buy new and like improving an inexpensive guitar but sometimes my purchases aren't so cheap and I only have to put on new strings. The cost of their products, that I would be interested in, is prohibitive. There are some great guitars, new in box, between $500 and $1000 bucks and I would rather not spend that for an Epiphone. Thanks again Colin for another great video!

    Hey Colin,
    I've seen so few of these that I forget they exist. I played one once in May of '98 afterschool one day at a music shop a few weeks before I graduated. It was a company called Mars Music. They were trying to be a music superstore, but they only lasted 5 years or so. Guitar Center had lost their contract with Gibson at the time and my buddies who worked there told me that Gibson would bankrupt Mars within a few years. I don't know if that was the cause, but sure enough they were gone in a flash. I don't think anyone else near me carried those models.
    I had a Guild acoustic for a few years as well. It was pretty nice, but I recently sold it to a friend. I also just traded in my 1959 Epiphone LP as well for another Epiphone LP Custom in Silverburst since Guitar Center was/is running a $200 off sale on them for minimal out of pocket cost. I am much, much happier with the new guitar over the R9. I just hope the R9 finds a owner who loves it.

    Always wanted a Guild. It's one brand I have nothing from. I love this demo, great guitar. Your riffing here is very Soundgarden-esque, which sells the thing quite well. Wish I could justify the expense, but the fact is that I own too many guitars that are similar to it, and some are pretty nice. I've got an Epiphone SG Special and also a Firefly FFLG that is very close to this and honestly sounds similar and plays amazingly well. Great review, Colin. Love your presentations.

    I had a very rare 70's one with an ebony fretboard. I've never seen another with an ebony board. Black, no visible pores. It had super low easy action, great playability and comfort and weighed under 7 lbs. Black. I switched the bridge pup volume control with the pickup toggle so I could grab the Vol with my pinky for easy rapid fire volume swells - à la Phil Keaggy or Ritchie Blackmore (on Fireball). As always, I still have sellers' remorse for it. It was just perfect though, at the time, I thought the pups sounded too thin - but then I was playing through a cheap solid state amp and even my Gibson ES-345 sounded kind of thin in it.
    Wish I had it back!
    Great guitars, sort of SG "killers" so to speak, though SGs are also great guitars. I had a 68 SG Special with the Maestro trem.
