  • Today we have a very special video, Ian and Mike were put through a physical performance assessment and force plates session with Dr. Greg Rose and Dave Phillips, co-founders at the Titleist Performance Institute. They teach Ian and Mike about how important it is to get your body in the right shape before small issues can bring down your game as well as how to unlock speed without injuring yourself.

So great to read that this is content you guys really enjoy. It was fascinating for Mike and I, we discovered lots of things and confirmed lots of things. I’d highly recommend connecting with a TPI instructor to carry out a screening of your own.

Please take care of yourself, you’re too young. (BTW, Mikey being a single digit handicap with his swing is quite something, it certainly gives hope to all of us who are trying to lower their handicaps!)

I always find it strange how the typical first response from people when you suggest your clubhead speed is around 125mph on course is to bash and say "you're not hitting it as fast as pros". The physical performance golf requires to improve speed for is very easy to program for... You look at exercises that increased rate of force development (RFD), Ground reaction force (GRF), and power then mix into the planes that a golf swing crosses. The skill in accuracy, compression, shot selection, reading a green is where a pro destroys an amatuer - which matches the long term athlete development model - 10,000+ hours to master or become elite. It's a good video, and it is good to see many of the movement assessment tools + performance measures we were using in S&C 15-20 years ago becoming more common practice in many sports - it is hard to break tradition I guess.

This was such an awesome video. As someone who had a Lumbar Diskectomy in February of this year, going through Physical Therapy and building more strength and flexibility has helped my golf game in the bit I've been able to play this year. Dr. Rose's description of the spine and disks was right in line with how things were explained to me. Love the channel guys! Hoping to get fit at my local Club Champion here in the coming months!

Guys I have watched hundreds (maybe into the thousand territory) of golf videos on RUclips, including hundreds of yours, and this is by far the most simplified explanation of how to solve swing issues I have seen while also using technology. I'm not getting any younger (58) and thought the best way to improve/maintain my game (currently off 5) was to go down the speed path. This video has changed my mindset totally. Please a lot more of this content from the TPI boys would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for this Ian and Mike.

Honestly I have shown this video to three different people as an example of why I love golf. I love data and analysis and trends and identifying patterns and such. And golf with all the nuances and intricacies of the game after you hit the ball coupled with everything before and during your strike makes for such a complicated but interesting (to me) orchestra of physics, human anatomy, and strategy. Hearing about the body and the weight transfer and physics during the swing was eye opening to me and made me realize things I wasn’t even seeing. And plus learning the consequences or the impact of doing things each particular way made it all click into reality and I was mind blowing. Definitely a video I’m going to watch again and again throughout my golf journey and be able to learn more. You guys always put out top tier content but this has been the most beneficial and best video yet in my opinion. Kudos and a job well done. Thanks as always for your hard work and dedication.

Fantastic Video. Sports and work injuries are for life.
I was 38 when i broke C7 internal side, took me 9 months of free swinging no power to gain back movement, but then broke L2 and L3. 2 years to get back to a decent swing, lost over 40mph swing speed. Am 58 now lowest handicap ever, still striving for more speed but know my body limits me. Ian Fix it now. don't wait.

All kinds of good information in there with both physical attributes and then swing adjustments with weight transfer, rocking/twisting sequencing, etc. Interesting enough my golf coach just caught my habit of leaning my upper body to the left on the backswing and realigned me more to the right to load up more effectively. Huge props to you guys for doing this video. I echo the thoughts of other commenters that this was one of the best videos you have done on this channel. What this video proves is that technique and physical conditioning are more important than technology. Ian, please get your back situation addressed before taking your speed journey any further. 200 driver swings in a day with (potential) herniated disc(s) is taking you down a path that will ultimately lead to surgery. The channel will survive without you being the person doing club reviews while you heal. Perhaps you can document some of your physical therapy and workout program as part of your process? Mike, as much as you play and love the game, this bit of instruction/advice you received was what you needed all along. Assuming that you are going to take the advice and work on improving your body movement, it would be cool to see you guys track your progress and then show a before and after comparison. Lastly, I believe that just doing a club fitting without addressing a person's physical limitations and their swing mechanics is somewhat of a disservice. Fitting outfits like Club Champion should offer TPI-like assessments and swing mechanics coaching as a service. There will be a cohort of golfers that take advantage of this and it is certainly another revenue stream for Club Champion. Maybe partner up with TPI to design an assessment & fitting package? Sorry for the long comment...
