- Bea and Matt turn their attentions to the tones of Red Hot Chili Peppers' guitarist, John Frusciante.
Here's the gear they chose to sound like John, without busting the bank... too much.

Hello everyone - so here's the thing. This was the first ever sound like video we shot, and in fairness, the biggest fail for us was listening to someone else's choices on pedals. We should have stuck to our guns, but alas, we didn't at the time.
You'll all be happy to know we will be redoing this in due course, but until then, you'll have to make do with this!
Rabea Massaad Hell yeah! Try doing it by busting the bank though
I appreciate it Rabea!!!! Please redo this sound like!
busting the bank, this time. will you please, Bea?
Rabea Massaad please BY busting the bank Bea!
Great news !! and nooo to all the commenters, please do WITHOUT busting the bank :). Or just do both :D
Y'all should bring in Dave Simpson to redo this challenge. Ask the expert and he shall teach thee.
Dean Prater this needs to be done
And now they did :D
John Frusciante used an Electro Harmonix Big Muff so why not use that? The screaming bird and the satisfaction fuzz are just pointless
Gary Moseley well, as i said when all 3 are on, that's the sound it creates. The challenge is more aimed at picking random gear we 'think' would work
***** I'm a massive fan of all the Andertons videos and you in particular Rabea but the title of these video's is "sound like without busting the bank" so surely picking 1 pedal instead of 2, especially when it's the actual pedal John uses, would be more cost effective?
Well I guess it's because we were trying to pinpoint certain tones from songs, and trying to achieve that with different bits of gear, that take care of that one tone. Obviously we are trying to get a full gigging rig on a budget of around £1500 and this rig was quite versatile for that RHCP sound. But of course it's not bang on because I'm not John! ;-)
***** oh its defo a gigging rig mate. Just me being a bit anal about the title and direction of the vid ;-) keep up the good work
Yea definately. Could of just used a boss ds-2, a big muff and some wah and been bang on.
Can I give you an idea??? MAKE A RIG WITHOUT BUSTING THE BANG THEN COMPARE IT TO ONE RIG WITH BUSTING THE BANK! how cool will it be? :)
agapawelina Great idea
And do a blind test!
Great idea! Would pay to see this! (Not really lol but it would be cool)
"Without busting the bank" proceeds to spend almost 2 grand US.
Haha love you guys, keep on making great videos.
+An Insider's Tip He is known to use several Boss pedals. He used to use the Boss Ds-2 and DS-1 quit a bit. He actually had three in his rig at one point. They could have gotten the price ALOT cheaper by getting a multi-fx unit like the HD500 or one of the Boss GT series. Getting the AC30/AC15 caused the price to go up too.
+Crimson Ghost Yeah if you look at his Rig Rundown he has alot of Boss gear.
+Jonjey Comms Yeai know what you mean but all these videos give you a solid quality setup ready to take to the studio and on the road.
Im from the UK and i do understand that the exchange rate isnt great for you guys but to be honest all music shops are very expensive in England, and there arent too many around anymore especially of that size, if you went online everything would be much cheaper.
Peace and Love though Dude!
Al the shit of john is €200.000 maybe more
+Jonjey Comms just buy a squier classic vibe 50's o 60's,a marshall combo, boss ds-2 and ibanez wh10 i think that you can obtain a super cool frusciante's tone with less than 1000 dollars
Make sound like Jack White
Yas 👌
Paflig THIS!
Paflig PLEASE
Paflig pls
Paflig Please do this!!!
this is one of my favourite series!!! please keep doing these!!!
Finally!
Thank you guys so much!
Dani Cal solo sounded like a wet fart..
that's the point innit?
But it sounds like that without the other instrument layers...
Wet fart! Foo!))))
what was hard about just using a boss ds2 and an ibanez wah into a clean marshall...
actually, the Marshals were set a little dirty. You may notice it very clearly on His cover of How Deep is Your Love.
Lalchhan Bawitlung ''clean marshall'' being the clean channel on a marshall not necessarily a clean sound
No it's the ce-1
gogajira2 yeah what he would do a lot of the time is use the overdrive channel with the gain really really low. Just to add a little bit of bite.
@@kaicottrell1560 That's a chorus.
love this series !
Love the vid and the tone, always just love that fender clean vibe and sounds great through the vox.
Make a Sound Like David Gilmour. Pleaaase.
***** Yeah, no.
Miguel Fernandes dude that tone depends too much on effects.
Clean amp, Strat, Silicon Fuzz Face, Boost, Delay. Extremely easy setup.
Miguel Fernandes well... first they'd need to borrow david gilmour for a day.. then hook up the entire pedal cabinet and let him go crazy...
illistas
i know....im sorry...i just hate david gilmour...
Some of the pedals that he uses are cheaper than the ones they picked
I really enjoy these videos.
Great job guys. You're doing good stuff. Keep up the good work & thanks!
Nice video!
I am a huge fanboy so would have chosen:
Same guitar, squier classic vibe 50's in sunburst
Marshall DSl40C, with these settings: Bass:10/Mid: 6/Treble 4-6
Boss DS-2
EHX Holy Grail Nano
Ibanez WH10v2
EHX (Nano) Big Muff
Teun Music Productions Oh and a little bit of gain on the amp for a little crunch.
This is so disappointing as a RHCP fan, they seemed to just not put much into their gear decisions and did NOT nail the tone.
+Zaq Kickasola (Da Shurif) I agree he always uses rosewood. It gave his rhythm and lead parts a more mellow bassy tone.
You can nail the Californication album with maple, everything else is hit or miss. Dani California is undoubtedly his '62 rosewood board burst
+Zaq Kickasola (Da Shurif) Most if not all of Stadium Arcadium was recorded with the rosewood. But I wonder of he used the white falcon for Californication?
To be fair though, there is absolutely no way to get the tone of a genuine 60's Strat on a budget.
***** the way John set his amps, you can. At least more than most people. But I agree, the whole rig is fucked
Would love to see one of these for Adam Jones of Tool.
I would too but it's kinda hard to replicate a 1981 Silverburst custom into a Super Bass/Diezel VH4 Blueface
Make it happen!
+Headrush Not anymore.
Solid playing! Sounds great.
John uses Marshall's, he's also a big fan of BOSS pedals. You've got no Marshall, and no Boss pedals, lol.
+Andy Bremner Being fair, both are expensive as fuck and they sort of blew a load on the wah
He also uses an Ibanez Wah Pedal. You can get the copy of the orginial WH10 for the same money as you spend for a Dunlop pedal. He also used Line6 Pedals. No Vox, no Dunlop haha :)
His Marshall's are cranked. So it is actually more like an old ac 30
Actually, revised statement: as far as I know he makes a fair use of ds-1s and they are cheap as dirt
zero fucks.
Umm... I'm not sure these guys are very familiar to the tone of John Frusciante lol
they are
Another great job guys. Perfectly captured his tone.
so much of his sound is playing-style. wonderful and informative efforts!
the guy with the afro reminds me of the real madrid defender
Marcelo
+Sami Clementi yeah i know , im a barca fan , didnt wanna say his name )
What kind of superstition is that? You don't want to say a players name yet you don't hesitate to say the entire club's name?
+wasn't me and the other guy looks like van gogh :D
hahahahaha yes !
These videos are awesome. Keep it up Matt and Rabea! Also, could you guys do a Muse Matt Bellamy video in the future?
Nice vid guys, those Squiers sound great.
Good effort lads!
why don't you use a Boss ds2 which is the original thing Frusciante uses? and it's also cheap...
In fact, you need a strat, a boss ds-1, ibanez wh 10 and a holy grail. thats the fundament you need to sound like him. but thats maybe 10%. for the rest, you have to be john, he is pretty unique.
Daniel Roth It’s a ds-2
Boss ds2!
@@suzannekerley4746 true, my bad ;)
there should be an entire channel dedicated to these videos and they should all be an hour long with multiple attempts/more songs!! valiant effort on this one
Loving these vids guys! Only problem is I can already hear my bank account weeping. Keep up the good work!
you guys should definitely re do this and not half ass it. This honestly isn't even close. A clean strat sounds closer lol
what the fuck do you mean? it's really REALLY close, a clean strat doesn't even compare
@@KeeperOfPoops I'm sorry but it really isn't, they admitted it themselves, Dave Simpson did something similar, his rig was around the same price but came out miles better I suggest you check him doing johns tone with minimum gear if you have the time
@@leotipping527 lmao Dave does play like him too so his finger tone really contributed to the tone he achieved. High respect for him
@@sevi3192 yeah, he definitely is something special
This sound the best yet! I think he's a very underated guitarist. Johnny Marr Next?
thank you sir
This is /exact/. It's awesome!
how do we feel like John though?
+monksax heroin. pretty much...
+monksax First you need to work in a band with a terrible singer who is obsessed with heroin and loves only himself. second, you need a nice big house, a smack habbit so bad it should have killed you several times, and of course, a lighter to set house on fire. leave said band and watch your replacement fuck up a band you love and poured all your efforts into for the last few years. After that, you're closer to being John Frusciante. By the way, I do love RHCP, even Anthony, this is just my interpretation of what happened.
David Haley i will do just that! cheers!
+David Haley idk man Klinghoffer is an excellent musician. See especially his work on John's solo albums as well as Josh's own solo project Dot Hacker. Not to mention that new RHCP single that's their best in a decade. I think Josh is really starting to sound at home in the band
+banjonator1 Yes he's a excellent musician, this is in no way a dis to Josh. But.. I personally do not like RHCP's music since JF left. Last album had no really memorable guitar hooks or solos.
Nah...you guys didn't nail that tone.
yes they did, they nailed it 100%
William Allison no... they didnt
sounds good!
Well, now I want to get the SL boost! Cool video. I especially liked how close you guys got to the "fortune faded" tone, especially since JF doesn't use a Strat on that song.
We've got to have a sounds like JOHNNY MARR. He's something different, rather than all these rock guitarists.
For some reason it sounds like it has a bit of modulation added to it...like a chorusey sound.
Tom Park yeah not sure why, but it wasn't post production
It's because the solo is overdubbed. There's a written interview where he talks about it. Trying to get a black sabbath big guitar sound by overdubbing the main solo.
*****
Well, that would explain it :-) That or a REALLY good chorus.
more please Bea
Great job guys!!! Can you do a video about Billy Corgan's guitar sound please!
Could you do "sound like Muse"? I have struggled for so long to get their sound
Ik you guys were finding stuff close in the store but if you wanted sound close i would say Marshall DSL40c, Boss Turbo Distortion, Ibanez Wah.
***** exactly what i was thinking
Exact rig I thought of too
+Joey D and a DOD Chorus. Those are cheap enough!
great perform...
sounds great! love to see a sounds like buzz Osborne
Please redo this video. Just get the the boss ds2 and for wah the ibanez wh10. Also use the marshal dsl 40c for the amp. The guitar was good just change the amp and pedals.
guitar should have been rosewood
nah, john has a maple one too
True, but he primarily used it on songs like the zephyr song. His main strats have always had rosewood boards
Thank you, finally someone said it. Jf used a jaguar in fortune faded
***** Gibson SG Custom, actually
Tom Morello, that would be sick
César Ventura get a fucktone of effects. Chain them in series, play one note, and rape the whammy pedal. There. You got Morello...
César Ventura Tom Morello only uses like 4 pedals so it'd be pretty easy to nail..Flanger, Delay, Whammy and Wah
dzemohendrix someone here has no idea..
And MXR phase 90 of course
I think you did this one really well, best of the lot. Even though it's the wrong amp! Shows how good it is :)
fender strat
That's wayyyy too much you only need a Fender Strat, Any Practice with low gain, Boss Ds2, Ibanez wh10 or a Vox wah, Delay, chorus pedal, Reverb= John.
I thought Frusciante was mainly a Marshall player? Did he ever play a Vox live?
Karl-Henrik Arendt Nope, never seen him use a vox
*****
Marshall Major 200
Karl-Henrik Arendt always Marshall. And also, weird thing they didn't include Boss Distortion
Karl-Henrik Arendt he also played fender bassmans for clean
Karl-Henrik Arendt sorry i meant fender showman...For what I remember he used that a Marshall Major and a Jubilee. For pedals he used a boss DS-1, CE-1,and DS-2. M MXR phase 90 a Wha and a Big Muff
You forgot to mention John first appeared in MOTHERS MILK
Good to see you guys do something you’re not that familiar with. Of course we all love Dave but he is an expert in that persons sound. I love this series, great to even watch the old ones. Plus good to see you guts are mortal too 😂😂👏👏
Nice!
sorry but no. only one so far that i find doesn't sound close. the clean bits on scar tissue were fine, but thats a sound thats easy to nail with essentially any "clean" amp. the distorted bits sounded too far off, and the dani california end solo sounded pretty horrible.
shouldn't have tried to be clever. replace the pedals with a muff, ds1, and some chorus pedal, and ditch that vox. personally, i think you would have been much closer if you went for a Fender Supersonic (two great clean channels plus heaps of overdrive that can sound like a muff pedal if you know what you're doing). or to save a buck, get a small marshall combo. maybe even a dsl
shut up! the distorted bits sounded way on and the dani california end solo sounded pretty wonderful
Sound like SRV and Jack White please!
Btw, do you guys notice a lot of a bass end loss with the screaming bird? it seemed that way in the video
Well the screaming bird is actually a treble booster
Axel Franco I know, but unlike the other treble boosters i saw, this one actually just boosts the high frequencies a lot and drops the bass. If you check other ones, you can see that its missing that treble booster magic that i love
I wish I was part of this RUclips series, must be very fun!
That dani califoria tone, amazing! no words
You missed the Boss DS2 Turbo Distortion pedal
You came close enough, but I think if you chose the actual pedals he used it would be cheaper and of course way closer to his sound. Just a good ol' DS-2, Ibanez WH-10, a chorus pedal and I'm pretty sure you wouldn't need a fuzz because the DS-2 would do the job, but yeah he used a Big Muff.
This series of videos are great!
Can you post a link of the video where Lee modifies that Strat please?
Serious mad skills by Rabea :)
Nobody can play like John Frusciante
Why is there no video yet about Smashing Pumkins? (the Gish/Siamese Dream/Mellon Collie sound)
Great video guys! At least now, amp choice is a combo. Unlike the other videos that did not include a cab... Anyway, how about doing a sounds like Nuno Bettencourt. Thanks. Rock on. & God bless.
John used Fender amps, live and in studio, the Jubilee was used as a crunch channel. He had a fender Princeton behind the rig and that is the sound of his cleans. In studio he used twin reverb and the Princeton, and of course Marshall silver jubilee for the crunch channel. The most affordable way of getting his sound is as they said, a fender Squier classic vibe and a Marshall dsl15 and or 40c.
No Chorus pedal? what?
exactly what i was asking myself
Can you guys do a 'sound like John Frusciante BY busting the bank'? It would be pretty fun! Thank you :)
Wow, this is pop
Liked this one too:
- VOX for a very good clean basic tone (esp. on a budget)
- Treble booster (a bit of Rory (;-)
- the SL drive is great
- the combination of the SL + the Satisfaction was a surprise to me ... cool tone
Well done. Thanks!
Why not do it cheaper with a Marshall DSL combo, EH Big Muff, a Boss DS2, normal wah, and have enough for a compressor? Very versatile rig for someone starting out with a CV Strat, and should get those tones for quite a few songs out of the catalogue!
+Jamie Clark My thoughts exactly... a DSL15 for home or a DSL40 for live, Big Muff, DS2, Ibanez WH10v2 wah and pretty much whatever compressor you feel like would be a better combination IMO.
Pretty much any amp that doesn't get too distorted will do the John Marshall amps are more for gigs. I'd recommend a Stagg 10 watt amp the 10 ga amp that does the John Sound very close. My Ds-2 works amazing through it for a 10 watt.
"He uses the big muff so lets get the satisfaction fuzz" what the hell is wrong wit these guys
Good series. Enjoyable. I would also enjoy more songs from the artists youre featuring, maybe look up their rigs and try what its supposed to be (full price) against doing it for a budget?
Cool!
+Str0mKasten Scheiss Real Madrid Spieler!
do sound like the mars volta/omar rodriguez-lopez
Sound like John Frusciante without a compressor pedal? Sacrilege.
+Jeffrey Haefner Actually he doesn't use any compression pedal, and never did.
Ok if that's true how does he get his compressed sound? Does he use compression from the mixing board? Does he crank the clean channel on his Marshall? The clean guitar tones on the Chillie Pepper albums are really heavily compressed? How does he do it?
+Jeffrey Haefner he compresses the shit out of his recordings
+Jeffrey Haefner he basically uses the Silver Jubilee "pull" function to get that particular tone. But i swear, he never used anything to compress his sound. Btw he also likes to set his pickups very low.
That's great info thank you for that. But for the rest of us who cannot afford a Silver Jubilee full stack Marshall and a vintage Fender Strat how are we supposed to get his sound with out a compressor? That's my question. Since the title of this video is in fact "Sound like without breaking the bank?"
We are still waiting for this redo. Which squier strat should i go for. Affinity? Vibe? Vintage? Custom?
Lovin this series guys, but i'd really like to see a video with the sound of Steve Albini from Shellac. I love his unique sound.
You guys don't sound like John at all lol. Just get a boss ds-2, ehx big muff and a squier CV60 instead of CV50 into marshall dsl5c or something marshallque.
didn't he just use a DS-1? not sure.
No, he use a DS-2.
he used both ;)
Alex Al Zouri true XD, i looked it up, but he used the ds-2 more tho.
+Rick van Baal yup he switched up in the 2000 hehe. John ´ s tone will be always a big muff, ds 2 or 1 , wh 10 and a fucking stack of marshalls
Should've gone Std crybaby, DSL 40C, boss ds1, and a fuzz face. The squier was a good choice, but I really don't know about the rest.
I think a big muff and wh10 instead. Might even add a MXR mirco amp to that
+Chris Fruscio analog and digital delay...john has always used boss dd series and mxr/eventide delays and mild reverb on the amp but also ehx holy grail and a compressor.. Boss DS-2, Ibanez WH-10, EHX English Muff'n/Big Muff, MXR Dynacomp, Micro Amp, Phase 90, Boss CE-2/5, MXR Analog Delay/Ibanez DE-7, Boss DD-3 Delay and a Line Selector....those are the pedals ranging from Mothers Milk to Stadium Arcadium...im not getting into the insane amount of Moog pedals or Line6 because the pedals I just listed have been his main ones...also Marshall Majors, Silver Jubilees, JCM800s 50w, Fender Deluxe Reverb/Princeton Reverb/Bassmans, Vox AC4s-30s, Soldano, Crate, Supro, Mesa Boogie, Budda and Magnatones - studio and live...Strats, Teles, Esquires, Goldtop p90 Les Pauls, Les Paul Customs, Gibson SGs, Grestch White Falcon, Yamaha s2000s and Martin/Gibson/Epiphone and Taylor acoustics also he has used/uses Epiphone Wilshire/Wildkat/Casinos and Gibson ES-335s...Fulltone OCD and Ibanez Tube Screamers for overdrives when he used them...he has used Vox Wahs as well.
Holy shit finally
Does John also use the neck pickup for almost everything?
Sound like Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher.
SOUND LIKE JOHNNY MARR
Hay guys, love the series! Can you make a sound like Adam Jones vid?
the nano double muff is a great pedal that I love and with the right setup is very very versatile. It has a single mode and a double mode. I have always ran mine into a clean tube amp cranked to atleast 3 (non master volume). Is that a single speaker or twin speaker Vox?
The dude with the afro looks like Jonah Hill in Superbad
oh u just made me laugh so hard haha
"No one's McLovin! McLovin is just a stupid dumb fucking fairy tale name you FAAACK!"
~Jonah Hill (2008)~
Patrick Interiano Muhammad is like the most common name in the world
Please do a sound like buckethead
feedback, feedback to no end
+Marco Bongioanni and wah
+Marco Bongioanni and wah
+Marco Bongioanni and wah
+Johannes Kristiansen and wah
great video. you got very close to the original tone of John Frusciante. Most impressive!
Great vid guys! Would really like to know how to sound like dimebag darrell on a budget. Thanks!
this vídeo is: How not sound like JF
I kind of miss a chorus. Frusciante uses that a LOT!
The solo of Dani California that you played, got too much "middle" on...but you did a great job! :D
can never go wrong with a vox and fender!
except here
Savage
can't find the mic you must have dropped it
John is one of those players where a lot of his tone comes from his fingers, every guitarist says they have that but he's the only one I've really heard to have it
It's not 100% accurate but I'm a huge Frusciante fan so I'm gonna be picky haha
His clean tone has a small amount of gain depending what pickup he was using, Neck sounded pretty clean and the bridge had a driven bite like the tone of the 'Can't Stop' riff.
Guys, you could have also just used a Boss DS2 to be in Frusciante solo heaven!
He used an Ibanez WH10 through his whole career for a wah but the reissue sucks compared to the sound of the old one. You'd have to mod it.
But great effort though, it doesn't sound miles off especially when it's like a £1,500 price range!
Cheers man, much appreciated feedback
Boss Ds-2 - the 'turbo' setting gives you the fuzzy solo sound. Big muff for songs like Fortune Faded. Any chorus can do, as CE-1s are rare.
Use an Ibanez WH10.
If you're gonna spend more, line 6 delay and modulation modules, not to mention the moogs...
What was the settings on the amp? It sounds so so nice.
