    My cat jumped up on the toilet once, investigated what was going on after seeing the humans doing it, turned around and started peeing. Then decided she didn't like the sound and turned around and peed on the floor. :/

    About 8 Years ago I had a cat named Nemo who by watching us taught himself how to pee in the toilet. One day in the middle of the night i woke up to use the bathroom and saw his four feet on the toilet bowl. I closed the door and gave him his privacy. In all honesty he never peed on the lid and peed better than a human. RIP Nemo.

This one I have now is 19 yr old Calico. Her owner died at 93yrs with alzheimer's last March. Words don't mean anything it's tone .I hum in a low tone and it helps them to purr. I was expecting a 5-minute video on how toilet training causes health problems. Provided it's safe, I don't think there's anything wrong with toilet training a cat so long as the option of a litter box is still readily available. I also don't think there's anything wrong with teaching your cat tricks so long as they genuinely enjoy it and are happy to perform for you.
    Edit: Cat clothes are absolutely absurd, though...

      She’s an odd one, that’s true, but clothes don’t harm the cat. If it causes discomfort or they fight you then don’t force it on them, but if they’re chill? Eh have a good time.
      Also there are hairless cats that need clothes to stay warm, especially in the canadian winter.

      Personally I don’t think cat clothes are absurd if they wear them for a couple of seconds or minutes for a photo or video and then get a treat. The video said if the cat could say no they would not wear clothes but they are very food motivated. I don’t think people have cats wear them long term. And of course if the cat really hates it don’t even try.

    • @beardiemom
      @beardiemom 11 месяцев назад +3

      The problem with toilet training your cat is that water treatment plants aren't meant to filter out cat parasites like toxoplasma gondii, so if your cat has it - and they may be totally asymptomatic - letting your cat use the toilet actually endangers wildlife in streams and lakes that get water from your water treatment plant. It might not be harmful to your cat, but it is harmful to other animals.

      Here's what you are all missing - 2020 Cat litter sales 9.78 BILLION with that figure climbing each year. They don't want you to train your cat away from the revenue stream. When you cat uses the toilet you can hear how much he pees and you can clearly see the poos. Time spent cleanining litter boxes became increased play time out and we wipe the loo seat after each human usage so it's cleaner for everyone. Put a low stool beside the toilet so the cat can jump on and off safely.

      @@jlaw8882 makes SO MUCH SENSE! Not to mention how bad cat litter is for people. Pregnant women can’t be around it (that’s exactly how I trained my husband to clean the litter box- while we were dating, I convinced him that “someday”, we “might” have a kid together, so he may as well get used to changing the box now. Yah, we never actually had the kid and he’s still trained to change the box 😂), it causes asthma symptoms to flare, not to mention how nasty it is when the cat goes directly from his litter to my chest 🤢. I also noticed that whatever toxic chemical smell they add to it to try to cover the poop smell sticks to my cat for a really long time after he’s finished. He smells like he just left a cheap whore house.

Your child is downstairs on the second one. Add that to the next time you house hunt. "2 bathrooms should be fine" "no honey 2 1/2 for the cat". You'll also need to leave all bathroom doors open for kitty. Just use a litter box. I have a litter robot. It was due to a cat with horrible bad smelling ibs, he got poisoned by iams . Because they instinctually dig and bury their poop and mark their territory with their scent... On a toilet that we scrub and clean constantly, they won't be able to mark it with their own scent or dig and bury ON THE GROUND. The way they do in the wild. In order for them to be confident they need to be able to adhere to their instincts. It's only convenient for us, it doesn't make them happy.

      Abigail Trumbo Look at they guy in the video, he's a freaking clown that carries cat toys in a guitar case. He ain't the one to decide that a litter-box is okay, he ain't the one to decide if a litter-box should not be clean (a lot of peoples cat's get on kitchen counters and tables, the share the same floors children play on, and they get on furniture and bedding), and he is not the one that decides if a cat goes in the toilet. If I could get a invite to that jokers house I would squat and take a crap on the floor because it's natural. Neutering and spaying not only isn't natural, it comes at a (slight) health risk to the cat, AND think about how much it alters the cat's behaviour. Next, from my experience with cats, they are usually not going to do a lot that they aren't cool with... (imagine you was to..) Try giving the average cat a bath every day and see how it reacts.

    I remember when I first adopted my little one, she was 4 months old and I quickly wanted to do what was best for the environment and knowing that all litter just ends up in a landfill, I wanted to toilet train her. I watched this video at that time, then other videos that showed you how to do it, but nobody gave you a good reason of why you should not toilet train your cat. I checked with my city's sanitation department and all they said was that we advise you against it, but wouldn't say why.
    The real truth came out when I read a scientific article on a persistent parasite found commonly in cat feces - Toxoplasmosis. This parasite is the reason why you should NOT toilet train your cat. Scientists at Cornell or the Mayo Institute (I forget where it was that I read this article) ran tests and the sewage treatment facilities throughout our planet are not equipped to kill this parasite before it does real harm and it basically causes death in sea mammals and cancer in some humans. The parasite can withstand exposure to heat well above boiling temperatures. After reading that article and the dangers of this parasite, I decided it's not worth it to be environmentally friendly when it comes to my cat and the conventional litter box won out.

      Here's why (these are Jackson's words, only elongated): Cats pee and poop everywhere naturally to mark their territory and that's a mark of dignity among cats. Using litter boxes is like telling cats that you can only mark this box, and this decreases cats' dignity. Using toilets, which completely removes any scents, is like, according to Jackson, removing all cats' dignity. For cats smelly means dignified, if we force cats to use the toilets, which removes all scents, the cats lose all dignity...

    Years ago my Aunt had a cat she raised from a nursing kitten she raised her by hand kept a litter box in her bathroom and she used it regularly for a number of years. Then one day day shears making up her bed when she heard the toilet flush. It startled her as she was the only one home. She went to look in the bathroom, but no one was there. This happened a few more times over the next few days. Then one day she heard what sounded like water running. She quietly walked to the toilet door and peaked in there and saw her cat squatting on the toilet seat peeing. When she finished she turned around and pushed down on the handle and flushed the toilet. She watched the water go down then jumped down and left thru the opposite door. My Aunt was very surprised. Over the next week she checked the litter box and her cat never used it so she eliminated and as long as her cat lived which was about 12 more years the cat always used the toilet. They just had to make sure the seat was always up. The cat apparently had watched her human friends use the toilet and decided to do what they did. This is a true story, I actually was at her house and I heard this happen, and my Aunt confirmed this to me.

      I wish my cat would do this. I'm actually in a bit of a predicament I have a cat and dog. Unfortunately the dog loves to eat the kitty nuggets. We've put up a gait so the cat get into the room the litterbox is in and still she sometimes gets in. She gets sick afterwards and I've been trying to find a solution. And the only thing I can think of that is affordable is to eliminate the litter entirely after training. I care both about my cat and dog so this is what I see as a win for my pets to keep them healthy.

    Ok, as for the brief rant about self cleaning cat boxes, I think they're GREAT. Especially for the cat owner who suddenly becomes disabled when their furbaby is 6 years old. They like clean boxes, but some disabled people can't scoop daily. Food for thought.

If we didn't then it will be unsanitary. This is what we humans have done to them. We bring them into our homes, I think it is just a small thing to do for them.

      Obviously exceptions and accommodations must be made from time to time. But the ideal is to let them have a normal litter box. A disability is not an ideal, and adjustments have to be made to live with it. That's understandable. Same with a pregnant woman who lives alone and owns a cat, and because of her temporary condition, she can't clean the litter box at all. But for a person who can give their cat the ideal litter box *for the cat,* they should.

    My cat, who unfortunately passed during the pandemic, was very particular about where he peed. He was fine with the box, but if he was near the bathroom, he'd choose the tub. The interesting part is that he was completely focused on making sure it went directly down the drain. If he noticed it wasn't, he'd reposition until it was. Thank goodness he only ever peed in there. I miss that boy so much.

    None of these reasons were compelling. An animal can't be socially demeaned in this way. They have no cognition of that. Certainly forcing a cat to do things it hates doing is wrong. But you won't get a cat who hates doing it to use the toilet. A cat that hates tutus won't wear them. Plenty of cats don't mind clothing. Plenty of cats choose to use the toilet. Teaching cats tricks can provide them wonderful mental stimulation.
    Forcing these behaviors by fear or negative conditioning isn't right. But if these cats respond to training without strife? If they don't mind clothes? Who cares. My older cat loooooves her sweater when its cold. Guess I'm demeaning her though.

    • @101jir

      I think he takes it too far, but like with a human there should be some give and take with the cat. Nobody tells there friend "you are perfect and I love you" everyday without once playing a prank on them. Pranks are harsh at first, true, but as long as a person is good about pranks being reciprocated it can be a bonding thing. I find cats are the same way. I communicate with them much like I do with people. They adapt some to the way humans communicate, I adapt some to how cats communicate. Both seem to try to learn more.
      +Madame Fluffy Um, would a human enjoy it if they could only eat perfectly healthy food all their life, never drive a car because they might get into an accident, and never go to school because the kid might get in a fight? That's no way to live. I would call that overprotective, and I think the same applies to cats.
      One exception: people living in urban and suburban areas. If you live in a rural area, they could get attacked by wild animals, and they could get run over (we have lost a few cats that way). But I know our cats would be quite miserable if we accident-proofed their lives.
      Our cats are indoor and outdoor cats. One is 10 years old, but has the health of a 7yo.

    • @madamefluffy4788
      @madamefluffy4788 7 лет назад +4

      101jir Even if you're living in the middle of nowhere - with no cars/people within miles of the place - a cat's life is still very much at risk if it's permitted to be an outdoor cat - the biggest risk being wild animals, all of which would either see a house cat as a food source or happily attack any creature that they few as a threat, venturing too close to their territory.
      Cats can also lose their way and become feral animals, themselves.

    • @101jir
      @101jir 7 лет назад +10

      Madame Fluffy Not if they recieve love and attention from birth. I have grown up with cats all my life, I can't think of one that simply "went feral." If you only let them out rarely, and don't give them attention (not saying this applies to you specifically, but explains the reputation), what reason do they have not to run away? Over the course of my life, I have probably had between 10 to 20 cats.
      I recognized that the risks are legitimate, save the one with them going feral. For this reason, I want to emphasize the difference between "barn cats" (which I am wholly against) and indoor-outdoor cats. The first is in the name, indoor-outdoor get plenty of time both indoors and outdoors. Second, barn cats generally get little to no human attention. Our cats get constant attention from someone, though every individual is in and out. Third, we give our cats medical attention if and when they need it (which in all matters except worms is exceedingly rare). Except for your basic stuff, like vaccinations and so forth.
      My main point, however, is that as long as it isn't an outrageously high probably that it will happen (like if you can hear the coyotes howling outside during the night or if you have another reason to believe that the threat is imminent), it severely reduces their quality of life to deny them outdoor pleasures, like real, true hunting.
      Let's compare to humans again. Car accidents are the #1 cause of death for Americans between 1 and 30. If you have kids, or if you imagine having them, would you keep them in the house indefinitely because they will likely be in an accident before they are 30 (not the same fact, but also true)? I know I wouldn't. Teach them to drive safely, have them wear their seatbelts, and take other reasonable precautions. But don't deny them access to the outside world altogether because of how likely being in an accident is. Same for cats.
      Reasonable precautions that we take are keeping them in at night (they are pretty good about that), and not letting them out during the day if we are aware that there are any wild animals around that can pose a threat, or any were known to be around for the last week.
      And yes, it will happen. Some will get hit on the road. So will some humans. Some will get attacked by feral cats. Some humans will get beat up going to public school, it happens more often than many think. But like with humans, denying them access to their nature only leads them to misery. A short a pleasant life is far better than a long and miserable (or neurotic) one.
      So much more I want to say, but I must already apologize for the length of my post.

    Personally, I've always thought declawing cats is akin to removing your fingers. Try it. Do Not Declaw Your Cat!
    Edit: All you who say it's like cutting the finger off at the first joint are right, anatomically. But it's like cutting the entire finger off functionally, which is why I say that. Any of you commenting to my original comment about it being like cutting the finger off who say it's like cutting the finger off at the first joint are proving you know nothing about how cat physiology works.

    • @tygonmaster
      @tygonmaster 6 лет назад +15

      Not at all. It is more like removing your nails. Cats can still catch things with their paws and they do all the time, hence why wild bird populations still suffer in areas with declawed feral cats. Cats are pretty fucking strong with or without them. Now, it is kind of cruel to do so, but it is NOTHING like removing a finger.

    • @KLP99
      @KLP99 6 лет назад +67

      Yes, it's exactly the same as removing our nails. They are essentially the same body part. But, are they used the same? Not even close.
      Without their claws, they cannot hunt effectively, thus weakening them, and some enough they can't survive. It also makes it so they cannot protect themselves. It's like disarming a populace. They are easily conquered when you do.
      Therefore it IS akin to removing a human's fingers. They have to grasp with their wrists, as we would without our fingers. They have no grasping capability with their "fingers" like we do. Yes, they have some, but only on a very limited basis. Like us, we have the palms of our hands to grasp things if we lose our fingers. Cats essentially do the same thing with their paws without claws.
      It is a much closer analogy than you've given it credit for.

      tygonmaster yes, it’s not like removing a finger. but it is NOT like removing a nail. in comparison, it’s like removing the first joint of your finger. it can actually be very painful for the cats and create behavioral problems when the litter is too harsh for their toes. he actually has a poster in the back showing a picture of a human hand with the finger tips off. cat declawing is not humane and anyone who supports it should not call themselves a cat lover

That was amusing, until he discovered the toilet handle, and could flush and watch whenever he wanted. We had to close the bathroom doors to keep him away from that handle, even with the lid down. Hey, Jackson. :) I like watching your channel, but sometimes I really don't understand why you are so opposed to people wanting to domesticate their cat. House cats do not live in the wild. They live in our homes. And though I agree it's important to understand the natural inclinations of a cat in order to help the cat be happy, I also think it's quite understandable for people to want them to be "part of our world".
    NOTHING lives a "natural" life in a human home. Not even us. Heating/Air conditioning, television, internet, toilets, stoves and microwaves, etc... are not "natural". I don't think it's "bad" to train a cat to use a toilet any more than it would be bad to train a child to use one. How far do we really need to take this "natural" thing when we expect them to live in the unnatural environment of our homes?
    Just saying...

      Indeed you are both right for some cases, cats enjoy being part of the family, and are interestingly weird at the same time. I hate that I have to repeat my story, but I used to have a cat (he died at the age of 16 ), which decided that he wants to use the toilet. No one ever even thought of teaching him that, since he had his litter box which we cleaned regularly, and there was no need or desire to teach him that. However, he obviously decided that he is human, and that this is how he will do "his business" , like all "humans". He used his litter box only if he couldn't wake us up to open the toilet door for him. What should I have done in a situation like this? Punish my cat for not being a cat enough?

    I work at an animal show, and the only tricks they teach the cats are to walk from point a to point b, climb across a rope, climb up a cat climb, ride a basket down, and jumping into the trainer's arms. They choose cats that they've seen like to do these things on their own and simply ask them to do them when indicated for a treat or toy. If they don't want to and walk off stage the show moves on, but the cats are usually eager to be rewarded for what they like to do anyways.

Four years ago, I rescued her three months old, during the most traumatic time in my life. She’d comfort me. Starlight would be on the other side of my room while I’d be heavily grieving. She’d see that I was visibly upset, come to me and lick my tears, and snuggle close to me. Id still be having a difficult time with my trauma if she hadn’t come into my life. She was and is my rock. hmm... your reasons to not like toilet training is not truthfully a good reason. It isn't really hurting the cat to train them to do things. When you say that a cat loses dignity if trained, you're also giving it human emotions. (Which you're saying we are doing by training them--making them more human). If it's not hurting the cat in any real way, it makes things easier and convinient, and the cat actually learns and does....a I hardly see the issue here. if you're teaching your cat tricks, chances are you're spending a lot of quality time with them. I don't think there is such a thing as "demoralizing" a cat by teaching it a trick or two.. or even putting clothes on them if they don't mind it. Those are human emotions after all.

    • @adav19

      +Ricardo DLT yeah. I don't think they care. Can cats feel "demeaned?" I feel like cats demean their owners way more than we demean them. I mean my cat HOWLS outside of my bedroom door every morning, and still has food in his bowl. He is basically saying, "Wake up bitch. I need some lovin'."
      I want to potty train my cat. I just worry about 1) when he gets older and can no longer jump up to reach it, or God forbid he goes blind and I have to retrain him to use a litter box so he can smell it at an old age and 2) what do you do if they're being boarded or have to stay a night or two at the vet?

    I clicked on the link to get real information, even if it is just an opinion, but I had to sit through 2 out of the 5 minutes listening to some dude who obviously loves cats...and his own voice, before getting to the topic as described in the headline. I don't need to hear about your fancy duds and tattoos...I do need to learn as much about my cat's needs so I can provide for him in a financially responsible way. Then he finally hits the topic and loses within a minute. Cats learning tricks is on a par with their natural instincts. Learning a set of movements in order to receive a snack is exactly how they learn to hunt and all of the tricks that I've taught my cats over the years have come out of playtime. Some of the tricks are out of necessity as I have a partial handicap and can't have them crowding my feet...so I patiently teach them not to and as with all of the tricks, they do them willingly. I'm looking for a means to improve my cat's life and this training could make it easier for me to maintain a consistently clean toilette...therefore healthy cat. I've seen no evidence or relevant theories to convince me to terminate my research on the matter in this video.

    I've got nothing against teaching cats tricks as long as it is an enjoyable game to stimulate the mind. Likewise, I don't see anything wrong about cats peeing into toilet if they don't mind it. I don't mean like in the picture, obviously, but if there is i mesh the cat can walk on and to stop the cat falling in. Some litter boxes have a mesh base anyway, which is lifted up: the soiled litter stays on the mesh and the clean one falls throug... You would still have to have a normal litter box as well as a mesh over toilet pan.
    I've also seen cats that like rollerboarding and riding on motorcycles (as a passenger); they had initiated it.

      I first discovered Jackson Galaxy from the My Cat From Hell clips where he is usually seen giving practical advice, and after watching this video expecting some fact/experience based reason to shun toilet training I was confused because this was more of an opinion piece. I actually recommend his books to a friend who was interested in owning and caring for a cat one day, but I did so without actually having read the material before myself since I assumed that he pretty much knows what he's talking about, and now I'm having doubts about some of the things he may be advocating in the books. Since this is an old video I hope he's no longer pushing his ideals of how a pet cat should be regarded onto owners and potential owners.

    What the hell is "undignified" about toilet training your cat? What a ridiculous thought. I've toilet trained 2 cats and 1 kid. It's about cleanliness and convenience and if I get another cat, I'll do it again. You can't beat a toilet trained cat and being able to avoid buying and dealing with litter. If you want to give your cat "dignity" (which, again is a ridiculous concept because this would imply the cat has some sense of human culture and what would be considered dignified or undignified within that culture), then we shouldn't bring cats into our homes at all. We shouldn't feed them or brush them or touch them, but just remove ourselves entirely from their lives and only observe them in the wild. While I think putting clothes on an animal is just stupid, I think the lack of dignity is granted to the human who insists on doing such a stupid thing. I think the animal would simply feel uncomfortable with something strange on its body, but not "undignified".

      I actually rescued a cat that toilet trained itself. And then trained the other five cats to do the same. I don't like them toileting in the same way I wouldn't free feed all six. How do I know their digestive health is good if I don't see and monitor their waste? Immune systems largely are in the intestines. Part of my responsibility as a pet guardian is making sure all six of my cats, my six dogs, my snake, frog, lizard and two mice are healthy physically and mentally. And that means I am aware when one is constipated or off color in some way.
      To me, toilet training an animal isn't about dignity, it's about health. I'm sorry to disagree with you, but Jackson's core message is sound. Signed a pet rescuer for over forty years.

    • @ejscottb3
      @ejscottb3 8 лет назад +2

      rubymimosa Uhm... if you have that many animals in one household, it seems completely chaotic and insane to me. I would NEVER care for more than 2 pets at a time, and even that I am weary of. Perhaps properly caring for pets (even as only temporary shelter) means not going overboard and spreading yourself so thin. I would question your ability to care properly for yourself and/or partners and/or children with all those animals in your home. I would also question your ability to care for so many animals properly by yourself. You might consider that you have emotional issues that prohibit you from interacting in a healthy way with human beings instead of trying to accommodate your feelings with so many animals. I think any responsible animal shelter would advise you the same.

    • @Teskar30
      @Teskar30 8 лет назад +46

      +ShesThe Beth Sadly, the topic was about toilet training and not the life of rubymimosa. And in fact, she really got a point (about the health of the cats). Don't be so sensitive and spoiled trying to hide it behind that jibber jabber.
      When he talks about dignity, he means the quality or state of being worthy of esteem or respect the way they are, and it shouldn't be necessary to put funny clothes in them, or make them perform tricks to us, or make them use the toilet and so on. His point is that we should respect, understand and accept the nature of these cute creatures and live with that nature because that is what makes them real cats and not robots with fur.

    • @ejscottb3
      @ejscottb3 8 лет назад +3

      Filipe Lehmann I suppose it's a matter of opinion what constitutes "respect" for an animal and what is simply training a house pet for the convenience and cleanliness of how you wish to run your home. If you want to talk THAT kind of dignity, no one would have pets AT ALL. Animals simply would be wild animals left to their own natural devices. Certainly, anyone keeping an inordinate number of pets confined in a house, at one's own will, is not "natural". Not to mention, it's well-known that people with social anxiety disorders can become irresponsible pet owners by having too many of them. They stop caring for themselves, their families, their neighbours, and ultimately think they are being caring individuals simply because they supply food for so many animals. The logistics of one person attempting to responsibly "care" for so many animals is not feasible. As well, there is absolutely not a thing wrong with toilet training your cat, not any more than keeping it inside and giving it a litter box. IMO, however, there is definitely something wrong when a person hoards animals.

    The Acro-cats (shown in the skateboarding cat clip) are actually super awesome and their owner is really sweet. The cats clearly enjoy getting rewarded, and most of their tricks just involve jumping and climbing as a cat would naturally do. Sometimes the cats don’t feel like performing and just chill, and the trainer doesn’t force it, in fact she tells the audience beforehand that sometimes they just do their own thing. In addition, she’s fostered and rescued dozens of cats, believes only in positive reinforcement, and her entire show is to teach people how fun cats can really be. I think if Jackson took the time, he’d actually get along well with her.

So next morning I'm ready to clean the mess and I started looking for the poop and there it was, in the toilet! I couldn't believe it hahaha. I bought my cat a sweater and she wriggles into it on her own, she's goofy and owns it. She loves her cat perch by the balcony, but being right near the window during winter is cold so she actually uses her little sweater. I leave it out for her because at this point she can get in and out of it pretty well on her own. As for de-clawing I think it should be illegal, if you are that uptight about things getting scratched don't get a cat! It's that simple, there is no excuse for mutilating an animal. My cat uses these cardboard scratching boards, I wish she'd use the carpeted posts but she likes the cardboard. Having to vacuum up the little bits of cardboard all the time is only slightly annoying and she's really good about only scratching that so it's the least I can do.

She did ruin a few of my things and sometimes she peed out of the box, but I only saw that as minor, casual setbacks, the most important thing was that she was happy and healthy and just seeing her confy and happy made my day and made it all worth it.

I rather clean my toilet each time my cat uses than clean up stinky litter box. And, we are, people who training our cats deserve thumbs up, because this road is very bumpy, and we still doing it. You do make a good point about the cat doing us a favor by using the litter box. Can’t train a dog to do that!
    This is what I discovered. Partly from your advice, and partly from experience. I use the unscented clumping litter, and am never bothered by odors. I clean the cat box every day. I use one of those litter genies to make cleaning litter easier. (Sorta like a diaper genie, I am told.) I also use a small stool to sit when cleaning the litter. All of that bending is hard on the back. I never have any litter box problems since I stopped using the super scented litter (like I did with my male cats) or that stuff you put in the litter to freshen it. Nope, just scoop the litter. I do keep my litter boxes in the bathroom, but have an extra one in the den. It is one of those litter boxes that looks like a piece of furniture. I figure there is little compromise on the cat’s part because they don’t care if the box looks like a table, they just want the litter cleaned, and so do I. The only cleaning is the normal sweeping up the stray litter around the box. I have female cats, so I wonder if they are just naturally more tidy?

I don't need to train my kitties to use the toilet. That is the same place people put their asses. And our intestinal track has more bacteria than any animal. +phthisicy, your answer is pathetic. Let's start with your ending sentences - you act like good homes for cats are readily available; we all know that's not the case. Actually, your answer is dangerous - you could very well be swaying people from not adopting cats who have the intention of potty-training them. To address your first question - where they go when it's in use - they wait a minute! Don't you hurry up your business when you know someone's waiting on you to use the restroom? Simply extend this courtesy to your cat. Regarding scratching and digging, my cats scratch and dig at the seat and floor after going. Your question regarding bacteria can be turned on its head regarding humans and the litter box... if your view is that the cat's health should be put above the human's - no cats would ever be adopted. And regarding water anxiety, new things can make anyone anxious the first few times around. Just like a vacuum cleaner or a new person, they can learn that it's no longer a threat to them.

    You don't have a valid argument against toilet training your cat. It's more hygienic since they are not tracking around poo and pee and litter around the house. Also, cats don't like a dirty litter box and the smell of their excrement and they don't have to worry about it with a toilet. Many cats even do it on their own. There's a lot less cleaning involved and money saved on litter. You can't say it's undignified for them because you don't know what they are feeling or thinking. If the cats are taking to it well and not exhibiting any signs of psychological stress, where do you get off assuming how they feel about it?

      My cat has already used the toilet with absolutely no prodding from me. I thought my husband forgot to flush. NOPE! Cat used the toilet. So in my head I'm thinking, "If I'm going to embrace him as he is, then I'm going to embrace that he is a cat that likes to use the toilet."
      Also, my cat is declawed (I know. I'm terrible). Once my animals are with me, they are in their forever home. The claws can sometimes be the difference between a forever home and shelters and numerous homes. He continued to scratch my daughter in the face close to her eyeballs completely unprovoked by my daughter (who was a baby at the time) for literally no reason what-so-ever because at the time, I don't even think she could even walk yet. Any moral issue I have with declawing a cat is completely overshadowed by how much I love my human daughter and her eyeballs. Once he got home, he attacked her from behind with his paws, like he was trying to dig them into her skull. #sorrynotsorry

She does well with it, I get not all cats will. It has taken some time in the begining to integrate and learn the bathroom is the bathroom. But hey, us monkeys learned it and keep memeing to our young.

I quickly grabbed my cat, and answered "No, I'm not removing him his only way of defense." I went back to my apartment and locked the door.

      Let your cat use the toilet. Mine chooses to also.
      Just pay attention to their drinking habits, and look at the toilet before you flush (to look for problems) and provide a sturdy little stool in case your cat has trouble jumping up and down, and you'll be fine.
      Mine do not want to go out at night (bobcats in the neighborhood perhaps?) And they seem to hate every litter (including plain sand) that I've tried.
      Mine CHOOSE to use the toilet. (All 3, and two males use the same toilet, too, voluntarily. They have boxes available just in case.)
      Please don't worry. Love and watch out for them, but please don't let anyone scare you.
      Jackson has to appease his kitty litter advertisers. It's his livelihood. If he told you it is ok to toilet train your kitty, they couldn't sell as much litter... and, they would not advertise on his show anymore.

    My cat loves to use the human toilet. I started the training when he was about 6 month. For almost a year I haven't had any problem, and my cat seems very happy and healthy. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG IN TEACHING YOUR CAT HOW TO USE THE TOILET! Everyone should do it. It's fairly easy to do the training and it increases the quality of your life, especially if you live in a small apartment. Is not like dressing up your freggin cat like Cinderella, you just can't compare the two thing dear Jackson.

    I used to live in a flat with a cat that I was given at an early age (4 -4 and a half weeks) we bonded very strongly... She used to chase me into the bathroom attacking my ankles playing... My bathroom was extremely tiny and my shower was right next to the toilet and the shower drain was just in between them... My cat started peeing down the drain and pooping right on top of the drain as a kitten... All I had to do was grab some toilet paper and flush it and it was taken care off... She would come with me into the bathroom and she would literally sit in the water when I had showers as well... My cat ended up giving my sister a scare once at my mum's house when my sister took a shower and my cat jumped into the shower with her... My mum liked how trained she was (without me training her, she just watched and learned herself) and would be like, there is a clean up in the bathroom, because she pooped in the bathroom there when I went and stayed there... She would also grab my chin with her paws and give me licks/ kisses... We had an amazing bond and I will always have her memory close to my heart... She was run over at an early age, but the love and freedom in life she had from me, would be worth ten billion lifetimes 💗 Shai 💗 My sweetheart...

    So Jackson, I have been living in hospitals &/rehabilitation centers for the past three years. I will be released this winter & hope to move into a luxury condominium. Naturally, I will have a single floor unit, with no basement. So, I am planning on teaching my new little adoptee to use the toilet to keep our home clean. Someone on here said their Kitty started using the toilet on. their own without even being trained. So I cant.believe that sitting on a round toilet seat is that different to a cats mind than going into a rectangular box. You talk about wild cats going here,there, & everywhere. I think that having a routine is less stressful to an animal. I think this is a major reason that homes kept cats live longer than outdoor cats.

      You'd have to cut off the first finger bone on their hands, because de-clawing means amputating the first digit of a cat's paw, where the claw is embedded. And again for those who have a hard time using critical thinking skills: There is NO valid, reasonable argument FOR de-clawing a cat. If you don't want it to use its claws, DON'T GET A DAMN CAT. If your cat loves to scratch walls or furniture, either train them to use a cat tree or put nail caps on them. If you de-claw a cat because you can't stand that it has claws, you're absolutely human garbage and don't deserve to even look at a cat in the first place. Not for debate.

    Like most things Jackson, I agree with him I love, worship and adore cats because they are cats--not dogs. They are so much closer to a wild animal than a dog, and their nature is that of a solitary animal, not a pack animal. They aren't built to be people pleasers like dogs are--any dedicated cat owner knows that the enjoyment one gets from having a kitty friend is that of doing all kinds of things to please THE CAT; and not the other way around.
    They are such magnificent, gorgeous, regal and oft times inscrutable creatures. My 6 year-old tuxedo shorthair Siegfried is a 100% indoor kitty, and I've placed 2 cat trees and several scratching lounges around my house that really appeal to him, and as a result, he has never even ONCE scratched my brand spankin new couch; his own personal kitty furniture is more appealing. And that is how you "train" a cat--find something that is a part of his nature and natural behavior like a designated scratching area, or a clean litter box in a quiet area that he likes to use in order to short-circuit him from developing any annoying habits.
    Same thing with biting and scratching during play. When Siegfried was a baby kitten, and would want to wrestle with my hand, I'd quickly yank it away, make a high-pitched "OUCH", and turn my back on him and walk away--essentially exactly what cats do to each other when their play gets too rough. To this day, he never bites or scratches me--he knows that it means he'll be ignored. But never hit or yelled at--that just scares them without getting any training message across.
    This is entirely too long; TL;DR = Jackson is awesome and right on the money with his recognition of a cat's "true nature".

    Declaring my cat is one thing I whole-heartedly regret! Indie, my cat, is the first cat I've ever adopted. So, when the vet recommended I have him declawed (during a conversation I had with her about his scratching furniture and wondering how to stop him from doing it) I took the vets advice. I trusted my vet as she was my dogs vet for 15 yrs. After having my cat declawed I learned how horrific and painful of a procedure it was. That was over 3 yrs ago and I still feel a lot of guilt and shame about allowing my baby to have to suffer in such a way. It really didn't phase Indie, he healed quickly and never showed he was in pain, yet it's the point that it was an unnecessary procedure...and a rough one at that! I wish my vet would've been more open and honest about what the procedure entailed and told me that declawing wasn't my only option and should've never been a first option in correcting a minor furniture scratching issue. Least to say, we no longer see that vet. We have a vet that refuses to declaw cats and refuses to dock tails on dogs, unless they're medically necessary.

  • @RedWhirlWind

    I considered teaching my kitten to use the toilet but after watching several vids of owners failing, I decided to just use wood pellet litter, and so far I’m super happy with it. I literally only have to scoop poop once, max twice a day and the rest I just shake the litterbox. I only switch/clean the tray once a week now. also the vacuuming for clay litter was such a pain, and despite what the litter advertises, it still smelt unnatural. if anyone is considering wood litter, do it. no training involved and yet it makes a huge difference. Plus I do sleep better knowing its better for the environment too.

    We are on the same page, Jackson. If someone doesn't want a cat and can't accept what a cat does and how (s)he is, that person should get a different animal as a pet. Declawing is pure cruelty, dressing them up is demeaning and going in the litterbox is enough toilet-training. My cat doesn't even have a litter box. She goes outside. She was feral and chose to adopt me. In the first year, she only stayed inside on cold winter nights. Gradually she started to sleep indoors every night. It's been five years now and about two years ago, she hopped on the bed to join me there. Was I honored!! I can't even describe that feeling. In the beginning, she would jump down when I moved, now she sleeps between my legs every night form dusk til dawn. When she wants to go outside, I let her out. She doesn't counter-surf, she doesn't scratch up my furniture. I have a scratching post. She had a phase where she scratched the walls under the light switches but I didn't react to it and she stopped. She's my purrfect queen!

      Well, we make our cats perform tricks, with the clicker. It's a way of getting them to work with their mind. But if they don't want to, they don't have to (but since they get treats, they are there the minute they hear their treat box being moved). Cats are not meant for a circus, since they are not always in the mood to perform and should not be forced. If they want it and have fun, it's okay for me.
      I would never train my cat to go on my toilet, though.

      I have a rule with my cats:
      Never do unto them what I would not like to be done unto me, or any other human.
      I know many do train cats with love and patience and treats, I guess it's ok.
      I have only managed to train my cats with one thing:
      To sit and wait patiently while I open the tins of food for dinner.
      They do this for exactly 5 seconds :-)

    • @ValerieRaya
      @ValerieRaya 9 лет назад +2

      rokedetbamidbar8 Ours have learned that as well. Every cat has it's own tray and they wait (un)patiently until their food is in it.
      In my oppinion, training with cats is a good thing. We get them to exercise and think. If they don't want, they can walk away. We have used the clicker on our dogs and horses as well, it's an easy way to show them the behaviour we want, to make them understand what we want from them. But of course only as long as the animal wants to participate.
      The only thing we force out cats to do is go to the vet and get their nails trimmed even though we use treats as well for our vet-training.

    • @ValerieRaya
      @ValerieRaya 9 лет назад

      ***** The problem is that while cats can be amazingly patient, they will most likely lash out one day. Some people will then blame it on the cat. We had several cases like that, but one stuck with me most: A family with a cat, 5 children, and she let them do everything. Then she got babies and the family sold them at 4 weeks and took them away. She still was patient and let them take away 4 of the 5 babies. At the last one, she attacked. She didn't sleep nor eat and was just protecting her last kitten the whole time. The family then brought her to a shelter. The poor thing was half starved and totally crazed. Her kitten was inside the box with her and the family wanted to take the kitten with them(remember it was 4 weeks old). This happened when I was 12(helping at that shelter) and I still remember how Marita, the leading force of that shelter, sent me and my friends inside completly calmly, while never taking her eyes of that family. We could hear her cursing inside though.
      Often people want to get rid of their pets when they have provoked them into attacking or other behaviour issues, because they are so 'evil' suddenly.

    I think you are awesome and watch your show all the time. I did not think toilet training a cat was smart but then came across this video and the guy makes a lot of valid points in favor of letting cats use a toilet. He talks about the dangers of pregnant people cleaning litter and about cats walking around in a box with some feces in it and tracking it all over the house, walking on beds and furniture and climbing on us with paws fresh out of the litter box. I know I always play with my cat's toes etc. And our cats love to jump up on the kitchen counter and walk on the edge of the stove. We spend a lot of money on litter each yer and it does not bio degrade. It uses tons of space in landfills and much litter is sold with scents...chemicals...not good for us or cats. All these things made me wonder if they should be trained to use toilets where their waste goes into a sewer and there paws are able to stay cleaner. I do not like the dust and it gets in their crevices of their noses and eye ducts. I am always cleaning them out. And my husband has a compromised immune system and litter is dangerous for him to be around for that reason. Check out this video, see what you think. I am all for natural, but litter boxes are not really. Love you and all you do, but am changing my thinking on this subject. ruclips.net/video/-MXn2iO9fdA/видео.html
