LOL! I love his key point-if your cat is not a "door dasher"-then don't try it. One of our cats LOVES to go out on the patio with us. He begs to go outside but he only wants to be out there when we are out there so I will try the steps Jackson described to walk with him. The main point is that it's for the cat-not for the human. If your cat is terrified-there's your answer-no reason to try! I really think our door dashing kitty will LOVE taking a walk and it will enrich his life.
I trained my cat to come when I say ”Why I got no kitty?". Just started silly and now I've made the worst command ever. Haha. He will come from a deep sleep, anywhere in the house...just comes flying. He just gets good boy and pets as a reward.
I didn't train her to do that tho. Every time she wants something (To play, eat, ect) she will find me, meow, then lead me to what she wants. I always feel like we have a special bond and understand each other just by body language 💖
My blind cat LOVES going on walks!! She took to the harness immediately and will now sit at the door and scream. I love that she loves it because she is blind. She doesn't get to look out the window or watch our fish tank. It's something else she can do and enjoy
I have a blind cat too. She loves to go outside but sticks buy side. I think she loves the outdoors and fresh air but sticks by my side because she feels protected.
wow my 19 yr old cat who was an outdoor/indoor cat is now blind n i never thought about doing this but i def should bc she misses going outside but we cant have her out there freely anymore
most people don't realise this, but cats eyes don't see the world like we do... their vision is a lot more blurried, especially at closer distances they see 10x more thanks to sound and smells. They create mindmaps that go far beyond our recognition and understanding with those two senses. Their eyes are more "supporting" the other senses, compare this to our "primary sense" which is vision, and where sound can help us, but we can't do anything with smells except saying what we smell, we don't make mindmaps from smells. We do make mindmaps with sound, but this is also more "confirmation" than being primary source. Eg: if you'd be blindfolded sitting in a car with the windows open, would you recognize where you are just by sound; you'd probably know you're at a trainstation if u hear a lot of trains, but would you know you're at a red-light if you hear a car honk and hear engines idling? Or would you think you might be at a car-show at this moment?
@@Nerobyrne if your cat walks you and u are not on a leash, nor is the cat, and the cat listens to you when u tell it that it's time to go home again, then you earned the respect of your cat and she has yours too. I walk my cat too, also unleashed, but a lot of people think walking a cat is like a dogwalk. I'm just a bystander when i walk my cat, giving her the room to sniff out the neighbourhood (even catch some mice for me), and i walk her at least 2x/day with nice weather and 1x if it's rainy. 15-30 minutes per walk, and when i say it's time to go home, she always comes with me. Sometimes she really wants to stay out (eg when she detected more mice to "play" with), and she'll do some "extending-tricks" to slow us down, but in the end, when i say i had enough and it's INSIDE NOW, she always returns back to normal-mode and even takes the lead on returning back home...
I walked my dog the first time some 15 years ago... eventually one of my cats followed, soon enough all of them joined. Some of the cats that I fed outside also started the habit. since then the older cats teach the kittens to continue the tradition from generation to generation. At some point I had 3 dogs 15 cats and a chicken in a procession.
That's way cool! I can just imagine! We have an Alaskan Husky whom our two Lynx Siamese cats adore. They see him with his leash at the door with us and oh yeah, it's all of us in procession for our walks. The girls take cover when they feel they need to, and their brother is aware of where they are. A great dynamic, so incredible to see their interactions during these outings.
That is the exact reason I don't whistle for my cats. I don't want to have every dog coming up to me when my cat is outside. I use a kind of 'kissing' sound. They understand I want them to come when I make that sound.
when I called my cat a door dasher my sister looked so confused took her a second and then registered what I meant and said ohhhh i thought you meant like a food door dasher!
My kitty, Onyx has been harness/leash trained since she was two months old. She's a true dog cat. She plays fetch, takes walks, climbs trees, plays in water, skateboards, turns on lights, opens doors, and is a hilarious little monster. Wouldn't change a thing!😊
@@gabbstarm5212 Tip 1: Get a brave cat. Look for the one in the litter that is open to greeting everyone that comes close. Tip 2: Start harness training and overall de-sensitivity training as a kitten. Make them meet as many new people as possible. Give lots of opportunity to meet new things. Tip 3: Consistency, don't give up even if you don't feel like. If you don't feel like walking the cat today, too bad. Still gotta. Unless something important during work came up, you're sick and need to lay in bed, or blizzard/storming outside. It's walkies time. Tip 4: Give a little push. If they don't look like they will make the first step, make it for them. If they stick close to the house, let them stay near the house for a bit before carrying them to the edge of the front lawn. Then carry them further and further.
My cat smacked me in the arm when I walked past his cage in the shelter. He would do this every time I got within in range. Didn't do this to the 5-6 other people looking to adopt. Guess he chose me.
I gently pushed my cat, she felt on the side and purred. It was love, at that moment she was only 4 weeks old. Now my little one is 8 years old. She trusted me from the beginning.
Our cat always followed us around when we walked our dog. Didn't need a leash. He meowed at us, wanting us to stop and wait for him if we got too far ahead. He also sometimes runs up ahead of us and then hides behind a corner before he would jump out in front of our dog to scare her just for fun.
Here's my experience: I adopted my fourth cat from a shelter. I'm sure he'd been an outside cat. Always begging me to let him out. Finally I got a harness and leash. He loved it. BUT I CREATED A MONSTER. His crying/begging to go out became incessant!!! It was never enough. Now I have added on to my catio with a sky bridge (it's pretty impressive). This has helped.
This has been my issue with the cat I just adopted. I know she is dying to go outside 24/7. She sits by the sliding glass door and cries. Eventually, she will come away and calm down for a while, but then she starts again. I am afraid that if I start to take her out on a leash, I will never get a moments peace. I am hoping that she will eventually realize she isn't going to go out and will adapt.
I have a little bit of an opposite problem. I adopted a formerly outdoor kitty, and he obviously misses going out, and strangely doesn't mind the harness, so I occasionally take him out, but he never wants to go back inside, and will complain loudly when its time to go back in.
I have the exact same problem here. I don’t want her to be out on her own, eating all kinds of birds and getting hit by a car. I’m also adding a little catio but honestly, she just wants out to kill.
There’s a lot out about it! I have several inexpensive kindle books that I used several years ago with my cats after becoming a student of Jackson Galaxy.
clicker training isnt about the clicker it's about the positive reinforcement and positive association, its like Pavlov and his dog just with an extra step, pavlov had the bell to the treat, the bell is the clicker in this case just now you expect an "appropriate behaviour" to go along with it,so in the context of this video, once your cat interacts appropriately with the harness (and you have to decide whats "appropriate") and as soon as that behaviour that you defined as appropriate is done you immediately click the clicker then immediately give a treat, the clicker is just replacing your voice or hands and instead of giving like "sit" or "harness" you click, im my experiences cats are smart and can learn different words so using a clicker is pointless its just the concept of appropriate behaviour followed by reinforcement (for cats its food) and pairing that with a sound like the clicker or a bell or a word
those are just the basic concepts theres a lot more detail but its all just basic ABA thats used in cat, dog and people training and a quick google search will be able to tell you everything you need to kno to be able to apply the basic concepts across multiple animals and different tools, its really basic stuff when you plan to use it on cats and dogs
check out catschool on instagram she has clicker training sets and videos on the steps to do all sorts of tricks as well as harness training. I love watching her stuff.
My boyfriend is like "Your cat loves me more, I will steal her." 😂 He's a cat person, his sister has 2 cats. BUT MY EX ON THE OTHER HAND, was a pissy little mommy's boy. Cats are my absolute favorite animal, and I'm planning on taking my family cat when I move out since I'm her favorite and her #1 care taker anyways. But he said we could NEVER have a cat if we move out because his MOMMY wouldn't be able to visit. Even though she literally would visit people's houses who have cats. And that's just 1 of the 200 reasons why I broke up with him. I also never really wanted to move out with him, I just wanted to have animals. 😂
That is too funny! My ex is a great guy, and I still enjoy visiting with him. We have shared memories that no one else in my life now can appreciate. However, I prefer LIVING WITH my cat.
The other day I stuck my weird cat in a harness, clipped on the leash, and we went for a walk. She was all about it, as if she had been doing it her whole life. She totally loved it.
Mine was exactly the same.i prepared for hours in advance, expected all sorts of drama but he just sat there, waited until all was set up and then just walked by my side
@@tdaniellastephenson3887 I'm not exactly sure. She is at least 8 years old. Maybe several years older than that. She's just starting to get a few grey hairs, here and there. 😔
@@nika_3537 i started both of my cats while they were kittens - first time i attached harness they just lied down, but after 3 time they were not noticing it at all. Now if they come in and go straight for food and i forget to take off the harness they sleep in it - no trouble for them at all
My cat was the same. I made him a coat style harness, put it on him and he headed straight for the door and waited ("I've got my coat on, so i'm heading out"). He didn't want to take it off! We took him for a picnic and watched geese together. Sadly, he succumb to kidney failure only a couple of days later. We always joked that he was a dog, but I'd known he was that doggy we'd have been taking him all sorts of places. :-(
After trying to walk my sweet old cat (passed on in November 2022, RIP 😢) on a leash a couple of times, we switched over to walking without leash, and it worked perfectly. He was better at the whole "heel" thing than all of the dogs in my village put together. - God, I'm tearing up writing this, I miss him so much.
I'm so sorry for your loss, hon! I've had pets (mostly cats) since before I can remember and I've loved them all. My previous cat, Boyo (actually Crybaby, but that got a bit cumbersome), passed in May of 2018 and I still find myself crying/missing him. I've never met a cat like him before (not that I've met every cat there is...) and I don't believe I ever will again-- I swear he was part human! I'm sure he's playing with your sweet kitty on the other side of that Rainbow Bridge (he was a lover, not a fighter). And we will get to see them again!*Hugs*
I "walk" my cats. I hold the harness out, they put their heads in and I clip up the harness. We walk around the back yard for 10-30 minutes. They love it so much.
@@s2kkyle, Rudy likes it. He surveys his 'kingdom', hunts bugs and eats grass. He also stalks the squirrels. He thinks he's hidden, but they know exactly where he is and yell at him. If I could attach a picture of 'mighty hunter', I would. Actually, I think I've put a couple of pics of him on my instagram (lkmelby). I'm not really active on it, but it's a good place to put up Rudy pics.
My cat is the same! :) He will -scream- sing like an angel by the door until someone takes him out. He also has a catio but even suggesting the catio when he wants out for a proper walk will earn you such a stinky side-eye lol. Never had any issues taking him out. I'm so glad to see this getting more popular! Hopefully soon it'll be the norm.
When I lived in CA I loved to go to the beach in a cute little town called Carpinteria. One day I was there just watching the water and I see a cat come close, sniffing the ground around me. I noticed it had a harness and leash on and I looked up and its owner was reading a book while holding its leash. I, being the cat lady I am, introduced myself to the cutie pie and their owner and asked why she was reading. She laughed and said that her cat loved to just sit in one place for so long smelling everything it could smell that it was less of a “walk” and more of an adventure. she would just sit there bored out of her mind while her cat had the time of its life. So one day she brought a book to keep herself entertained and that was that. It became their daily ritual. When she feels a tug in the leash she moves with it. When it stops she stops and reads. She said he can take up to about 10 minutes or more in one spot lol. I loved it and I’ve thought of her so often ever since.
This will probably be me if I walk my harness-trained cat. We have a HUGE yard. right now I just put him on the 20 ft string and have him explore the garden
I had a kitty named Maxwell who loved to go for walks. I wasn't supposed to have a cat in my apartment, so I had to smuggle her out of the building and take her to the park to walk. So, I put a paper grocery bag on the floor and put her leash inside. Max would hop into the bag and I rolled the top down a bit to carry her out to the car. When we got out of sight of the apartments I opened the sack and out jumped Max to enjoy her car ride to the park. Returning home I would stop before reaching the apartments. Max would hop back into her bag to be smuggled back into the apartment. I never had to "train" her. I just showed her the bag trick once and she got it. Max was a brilliant cat.
I love your story; I was cracking up laughing about Maxwell going in the paper bag and you rolling it down a bit. Then I continued reading how Maxwell would get back in the bag before getting home and lost it again laughing. Brilliant story. I love your solution and that Maxwell totally went along with it. Thank you for sharing❤️
My cat used to go on walks with me, without a harness or leash. He would follow me block after block, just like a well trained dog. He would stop to smell the bushes or things to see who was in the neighborhood and would run to catch up with me if I got ahead of him. I had him for 13 years before he passed away from cancer. I sure miss our walks
I did the exact same thing. He's such a good boy. However, vehicles can't be trusted. He was almost annihilated by a truck. He found his way back home about 9 minutes away with a few scrapes. He's still an outside cat, but I haven't gone for walks with him since. I'm considering leash training so we can still spend quality time together.
My cat enthusiastically grabs his leash and harness and runs to me when he wants to go outside for a walk. He does that everyday. My friends think my cat behaves like a dog. I'm just happy that my cat is who he is, and that he loves long walks in the forest. 😊
When i tried doing that my cat ran away and she was running in the street with 5 meters of rope. I found her inside of a car the neighbor had to open the hood she was IN the hood like inside of it bruh. I had to reach in to remove the harness so she can get out because she was stuck... i thought she would die. I hope people dont do the same as me and they do proper research before doing that.
Amazingly my both my kitten (12 weeks) did this today. Grabbed their harness/leash took to door and meowed. I did take my time and was super patient. First was hall way walks, then lobby walks, finally outside. Today walked em 4 blocks. Treats are a must and I usually whistle instead using clicker..
My bf is more of a dog person but suggested we get a cat for me. When we finally went to adopt he said “I kind of want 2”. Definitely surprised me and he’s now definitely a cat dad.
Took me years to convince my hubby to let me get a cat. He was instantly a convert and now we have two. He also likes how smiley they make me and the kids.
Always happens that way!! Dog people are just people who fall into the negative stereotypes of cats- either because they don’t know how to treat a cat correctly, or just went with what they’re told.
I dated a girl with a cat that used to be a outside cat till he was hit by a car. He always tried to escape whenever the door was open. I decided to try and leash train him. that led to him forgetting how to move whenever the harness was on him but one day after he nearly got out I decided to just put him outside on the leash. After a few minutes of him just laying on side in the grass I thought maybe pulling him a little would get him to walk. Nope I dragged him probably 5 feet and picked him up and put him inside. Everyday for over a month we did this and he never found his feet. Eventually I gave up and for a couple days didn't do it. The 3rd or 4th day of not going outside he came to me with the leash in his mouth. So I thought well lets see. Put the harness and leash on him and nope just flop cat again. I pulled him a bit around the yard and then I realized he was playing with the leash. That led to months of daily cat draggings in the yard. I'd pull him around stop and he would sniff and play a little then he would meow at me and we'd go another few feet and he'd do it again. The only time he would stand up is when he realized I was going to take him inside and he would fight me or claw into the ground. If I didn't take him for a walk within about an hour of getting home from work he'd knock the leash off the wall and harass me till I took him outside. I miss that cat.
After I’ve lost two cats to outdoor dangers, I vowed to never let my cats outside by themselves ever again. When I got my two current cats, if they wanted to go outside I just kept putting the harness on them as kittens and they learned that if they wanna go out they have to be on a leash. My cat meows and brings me the harness when she’s ready! Please don’t let your cats outside without supervision you’ll have them around a lot longer!
sorry for your loss but it depends on the cats where you live. In 27 years only one of our 11 cats got run over by a car, the other ones all died of old age. My boyfriend even had a cat that roamed a big city for 18 years before it was put down because of brain cancer. By the way, what happends if a dog comes aroound? The cats cant escape on a leash and if you pick your cat up the dog could jump and maul you too? .
@@coalcupcake4659 ...There are people who smoke 20 cigarettes a day and live to be 90 and die of old age without ever developing cancer or lung issues. Does that mean smoking isn't harmful?
Here is an important point. A cat will ignore the harness when he is outside. He will be more attentive to everything around him then the harness. Also bring him outside in a cat carrier.
@@firespider7695 So he has a safe space. You bring the carrier outside and then let him exit when he's ready. If he gets scared or nervous he will jump back in the carrier.
@@Maverick99 Hmmm... I guess it would be good if you have a skittish cat. Mine always likes me to hold her when she's insecure. She sleeps in the crook of my arm or laying across my chest so that's where she feels most secure. She uses her carrier as a toy. She hides inside of it and "ambushes" me when I walk by! HA!
Carrier is an excellent idea if you live in an apartment building and it takes a minute to get outside or possibly an elevator ride. Some cats will sit in a lightweight carry bag but they should already have the harness and leash on.
I vacationed w/my leash trained Calico cat, we camped in Az. Returning to Camp we saw we’d been robbed by an animal. Calli got excited & followed the scent trail. Up the mt. we went following twisting & turning. We found ourselves on top of a huge bolder & there it was, my measuring cup licked clean of BBQ sauce by a coatimundi 😂🤣
We found a cat that we thought was someone else’s and it turned out it wasn’t their cat. It was a feral cat and winter was around the corner so we left out some food for her and got her a warm hut to stay in, we didn’t try to force a relationship with her. Over the years she started coming onto our porch with us which was really cool that she was comfortable with us and even wanted to be petted by us. Then she started coming inside our house, fast forward another year or so and now she lives in our house, we try to let her outside but she never wants to go outside. She doesn’t even wait by the door, I’m glad that she likes us. She used to be so scared of us. Her personality is still skittish but that’s to be expected of a cat that was/ is kinda feral. She’s a black cat so I’m glad she lives indoors just Incase someone sick ever wanted to harm her. Edit: her name is Wendy, short for Wednesday because we found her on a Wednesday. Coming up to almost another year with Wendy is amazing, she’s an incredibly sweet and loving cat and I can’t imagine life without her. She can’t meow (like more feral cats), just drops her jaw and try’s to honk at us, she’s PRECIOUS.
Look up the RUclips account for Cinnabon. Basically the same story, he's amazing. Cinnabon's owner wasn't even a cat person, but then that cat just kinda. Literally waltzed into his life
Tom Zampiga I own two black cats and I can say that they’re they best cats because when they lay in the sun it’s heaven to pet them, no other cats have their power and warmth

Just got back from a long walk with my handsome boy... he is one of those cats whom before I adopted him must have experienced the outdoors. He always wants to be outside especially on cool days in south central Texas. We met a neighbor's horse and fed him some long sweet Bermuda grass. The horse was a good boy and did nothing to scare him. I started taking him out on a 6' leash when he was a year or two old. Now he's on a 16' length and we walk trails in the woods together. Thank you Jackson for helping others to discover leash walking your cats.
Took me over two months to get my cat to accept the harness. We started when he was about 6 months old. In the beginning he was playing dead, refusing to move... so, I was putting the leash on him every day for 5 mins, with the leash, but without me holding it, so that he could get used to having it on him. Then, we gradually started going for walks. Now, we go everyday and we have even been on the beach. People look at me like I am crazy (I am really the ONLY ONE in my city that walks a cat ), but as he is happy and safe outdoors with me, I pay no attention :-D
My cat didnt like it that much at first, then i tried again a few months later (today lol) and she loved it outside in the yard chasing bugs and sitting under trees :) edit: punctuation
I have a question. I wanted to try to walk my kittens but my grandma says they can catch diseases she said they could catch something just by sniffing urine of other cats .. do you think this Is something I really need to worry about? Thank you for your time.
@@-_oOtianaOo_- I think that if you take your cat to the vet for its vaccines and make sure to give them their monthly flea treatment, it should be OK. Talk to your vet, but mine says it is OK, as long as I do not let him eat any food when we are outside
The 1st and last time I put a harness and leash on my first (and most amazing) feline soul-mate, she panicked, jumped onto my mother's table, perfectly set for thanksgiving for 16 guests, and tore down the middle lengthwise with the leash trailing behind. My mother almost had a heart attack. Fortunately Nina-bean was always astoundingly graceful and didn't break a thing. (Needless to say, I'd never heard of a clicker.)
Our cat is blind (born without eyes) and she absolutely loves walking outside When she was first put in a harness she was just so happy about being outside she barely noticed Obviously this is usually never the case and we got lucky but I just thought it'd be cute to share

My kitten walks with the dog but when he don't wanna move I gotta pick him up .. when we are almost home that tail goes up and he speed walks to the house

My cat learned to give high five by me actually saying "gimme paw" 🥰 it was a long process, at first she thought i wanted her to attack me with paw so it was a "software error" for her hahaha.. she was angry. but then with treats and me softly taking her paw on my hand ...she started to understand. now it does without treats and receives pets. sometimes, she gives me a high paw just to get more attention. it is funny, she also remembered our training pose..so she makes a round and sits, all politely, and raises paw. love my black cat.
Lmaoo once i teached my cats to give me their hands. At first it worked but then the same thing with your cat happened and the two idiots were striking me at command. Got a bit better afterwards and i learned once again that cats are a bundle of sass
How do you get them to give you their paw without scratching you with their claws? Any advice, I took in a 6 month old cat and I want to train him. He is great cat, very calm but young and still learning.
@@madamenoire6830 Oomph, I'm not probably a good trainer. But I invited my cat on a table so we're at similar level. I would offer a treat on my open hand (low high five), but would say "paw". After couple of treats I would take its leg and put on my hand. Also I have attention move - cats like to stray away from focus - then i would snap my fingers and make a round movement with finger back to me....so cat can look at me again. And then paw...paw.... each time cat will get treat, and then once i will pull its legs towards me... cat would be angry...but soon it started to understand treat is awaiting when her paw is on my open hand :) later years there are less treats and more cuddles... and even sometimes, when she wants my attention or affection, she lifts her paw like we trained. She uses this trick when something is really important and wants my serious attention. Now I ask myself - who is training who here hahahah :D
@@ThomasChaote Thank you so much. I will be trying out your techniques on Mr. Pots. I have never had a cat before. BTW- He was a stray I took in from the cold he was in my empty flower pot dug himself in the soil I guess to keep warm. Due to his jet black coat I almost didn’t see he was in there until his ears poked out. Fed him and opened my door and he came in the poor cat was shivering. Well he will never be cold and hungry again. I got him his shots and neutered. He is about 6 months old and quite calm so I look forward to being able to train him so we can continue to bond. Again, thanks for the techniques.
My new kitten is completely deaf, and loves to be carried. I bought a pouch sweatshirt to carry her around in and, wow, she loves it. Jackson - I’m sure you’re familiar with Rachel & Jun (also known from the highly popular Jun’s Kitchen channel) and their amazing cats Haku, Nagi & Poki, yes? These gorgeous cats have been trained so well and seem so content & involved in their humans’ lives; Haku riding in Jun’s bicycle basket as he cycles through the Japanese countryside & then Haku & Nagi observing from high shelves in his kitchen while Jun is cooking (being offered a sniff of every new ingredient) is just so sweet! All three cats have also been trained to give Jun multiple dual-paw high-fives right before they’re fed, which is equally adorable...trust me, anyone who hasn’t yet seen Rachel & Jun’s channels and their three very special kitties, do yourself a favour and check them out! 😻
i just found a feral kitten a month ago. 2 days ago, she decided she wanted in the house, not just our balcony. Now, she's always wondering where my dog is at and if she can pounce on her. I'm watching this video in case this kitten gets so curious she wants to see where we go. Also, I'm looking into those bubble backpacks lol
I had one cat that was borderline genius. Taught herself how to play fetch, and open doors. With help of her favourite treat, I taught her to jump over my arm, but she would *only* do it if she knew I had the treat. She would sniff my hand first to make sure. She wouldn't do it if I didn't have the treat, lol. XD
We had a dachshund, a Labrador retriever and a neutered tomcat when I was growing up. The cat would exit the house after the dogs on leashes and "participate" in the walk. While the dogs sniffed trees and checked stuff out, the cat would stalk through the neighbors bushes, from yard to yard, following along. He did it his way, prowling, hiding in shadows and shooting across open spaces at a sprint. Occasionally, he would interact with the walkers, but it was mostly participation at a distance, enjoying his own private adventure.
For our cat it went like this: Day 1 "OK, you want to go outside? Here's a harness." Cat lies down, and refuses to move. Day 2: Cat thinks, "Woohoo! Harness means I can run all around outside! This is awesome!" Now, you just say, "Harness?", and he is ready to go!
My kitties were a bit more lukewarm than that (took about a month) but they’d love to go out more, too. Every time we get the dog harness out or say “harness” or “gear” they cry for theirs and practically shove themselves into them
Same with mine!! I made a point to get her to associate the harness with going outside and taught her the word "outside". The very first time we put the harness on we took her out. I knew she would love it because I knew she wanted to be outside. She was a little worried at first but it didn't take her long to warm up to it.
Hi, I have ordered a harness and leash for my five month kitty - Do you have a set time each day and take your cat out whatever the weather? Obviously if it is raining or snowing and they take one look and stay put, no forcing to go out, so it is their decision. Any tips?
@@TracyKNixon It depends on the cat, but mine has no issues with me just taking her out whenever I feel like it. Sometimes it's a few times per week, sometimes I don't take her out for a month or two, and either way she doesn't really mind. She never whines at the door or anything but still loves being outside.
Fact: Cat's choose you. Not the other way around. Seriously I didn't choose jack. He showed up one day at my house. He ended up being one of my best friend for 12 years before he sadly passed away.
Im so sorry for your loss...😔 My boyfriends cats came in the same way too hehe Mona, his cat, suddenly went inside his house and him and his parents were just like "well, hes our pet now"
Jack chose you and you loved him for the rest of his life. That is beautiful. Whenever you miss him thinking of this may help: There is a story about a heavenly crossway called the rainbow bridge because of all it's beautiful colors. Just this side of the rainbow bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass. When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who were sick, hurt, or in pain are made whole again. There is only one thing missing, they are not with their special person who loved them so much on Earth. So each day the group runs and plays until the time comes when one suddenly stops and looks up. The nose twitches and the ears stand as that one runs from the group! You have been seen and when you and your special friend meet, you take them in your arms and hug them. They lick and kiss your face again and again - and you look once more into the eyes of your best friend and trusting pet. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together never again to be apart.
That’s what I believe too. I just had a friend who had to get a stray cat out of their vent, and it was so loving. They’d been wanting a cat for the longest time and here the universe provided them a child. So what did they do? Dumped it back outside saying it was probably someone else’s cat 😡 no collar, very dirty cat. I can’t believe they just put it back outside instead of keeping it
I live on the 21st floor and my cat was scared of the lifts so whenever I walk him I put his harness and leash on and then put him in his carrier until we get to the place where I walk him. Now he jumps in the carrier whenever he wants to go for a walk. It makes getting him to the vet an awful lot easier.
I used to say to my cat , walk round the garden. She would follow me round, it was great then I'd play with her. She loved sleeping in the flower beds. Big garden. She was a indoor outdoor cat in New Zealand.
I had a cat i tried to walk. As soon as the harness would go on he would "deactivate." He would be completely limp and fall over and not move what so ever. As soon as it came off he would reactivate and go on like nothing happened.
My cat was doing exactly the same thing. I have recently added a jackpot TOY as well as a jackpot treat and he gets so excited by the toy he forgets to fall over and just starts playing with his harness on.
It took about 5 minutes each day for a week to get my 2 year old rescue out of deactivate mode and another week of slither on one shoulder snake movement until he got used to his (and a different harness style) definitely a good deal of patience by both cat and human and rewarding required for most.
I recently started walking my cats on their harness....my female kitten like it. My male cats absolutely love it. Now he goes insane when he goes back inside trying to get back outside.
Once our boy got to go out regularly he doesn't try to sneak out anymore. We made it part of the routine for him to stop in the threshold for a few seconds before he ambled on out and I think that might have helped. He sniffs around there a bit first and I think that might be part of it. Gets him to think about it instead of just rushing the door.
One day my wife and I went out for a walk. When we started to walk off, our cat, Otis, came bouncing out from the back garden and followed us. We went for a 20 minute round trip and throughout, Otis, would dash under bushes and in and out of gardens, showing us all his haunts when he patrols his domain. We've done this many times since and Otis is very proud to show his people off in his territory.
My cat was already harness trained when I got him >D He has so many dog behaviours, I'm pretty sure he was a cat raised by dogs. He doesn't jump on counters or furniture. He takes baths. He brings me his leash and harness. He goes to the door and makes little "reff?" sounds. He's a dog in a cat body.
My cat DEMANDS his walks everyday now. He'll point and meow at the leash/harness on the wall, and a few times he's pulled them off the wall and brought it to me. Honestly the cutest thing everrr 😍😻
I taught my cat to sit, high five, boop (reaching up on hind legs and reaching up with his paw to boop my hand), finding an item between 1-3 cups after moving it around, come to mama, and my favorite, ring the bell where he rings the bell. He is 13 and has special needs. He is the smartest cat ever teehee. I love him. @SystemeDeCat on Facebook EDIT: HE JUST LEARNED HOW TO FIST BUMP ME OMG. YAY!!!!!! who says cats aren't trainable :)
My cat surprises my (also cat parent) friends because he always comes when he's called. Basically, he trained himself, or if you like, I call it passive training: I only use his name and call him when it's for something he likes, his dinner, treats, toys, brushing (he loves that), petting, going outside (into the walled garden). I NEVER call him if I have to give him medication or bathe him or just because (in those cases I just grab him on the fly)! So he associates his name with all good things and always comes at a quick trot or an all-out run!
My cat was 15 when I had to rehome him because I became homeless. I had taught him to sit, lay down, spir around, beg, high five and he walked to heel a bit. I think people who get it into their heads that cats aren't trainable are just lazy and make assumptions without even trying. We should base whether we like cats or not on whether they can do tricks but I feel like a lot of cats miss out on homes because 'dog people' (and I am a dog person really) believe cats are stupid and don't bond with their humans at all because they aren't so known for doing random shit to entertain us. I feel like a lot of cats needlessly die because there are people out there who actively HATE cats fro dumb reasons, all myths, really.
I taught my cats to ring a bell, too. They want out into the screened in porch? Bat the bell. (Lots of demonstration both with my hand them gently guiding their paw, and letting them out immediately with lots of praise, then consistently making them doing it themselves after they did it once or twice on their own. Also removing the bell when I don’t want them asking to go out (like at night, or when it’s too wet since they won’t let me dry their paws back off)
Best guy 👍🏻 my boyfriend also asked me if we want to train our most curious cat to walk her. So I guess we will buy a harness soon. Did you also use clicker training?
@@katzenlady5339 -- It's as Jackson says, it depends largely on the cat's personality. I've had cats (and dogs, and horses, and... don't get me started!) all my life, and some cats learned fast and loved going out, others never minded the harness and leash, others learned to tolerate it, some were timid and didn't want to go out, some could never bear the harness... you get the idea! :)
I adopted a kitten and took him for his first walk. After the first shock of being outside and trying to escape his harness he enjoyed himself!! Got to see chickens, pigeons, stray cats, ect. Also will be getting a catio for when I cant take him out.
My cat loved camping, walks in the desert, climbing trees, catching mice. Amazed me how much he lived our walks. He'd sit by the tent around 3 or 4 and wait for me to take him for walk. 💞 memories.
@@The_Tiffster I don't blame you Tiffany I was jealous of every cat owner before I became one! If you ever have the chance to have a cat I highly recommend it! There cuteness legit brings tears to my eyes.
My cat Storm always showed that he wanted to go outside so I purchased a harness and leash for him. The first time I put the harness on him was hilarious because one I did not buckle it and two he just fell over. I immediately took it off and tried again the next day and built up confidence in him by repeating the process and allowing him to determine how long he would have the harness on. Once he was comfortable with the harness I then added the leash which is more weight and he was sensitive to it therefore I repeated that process until he was comfortable with it. Once he was comfortable with both we went outside. Also, my cat loved to travel. He would stand at the window of the passenger seat and look outside as we traveled sometimes all the way from Texas to Connecticut to visit my family and he was always fine with it, but having that harness and leash allowed him to be adventurous once we got to where we were going or just in the neighborhood. We eventually moved to Germany and when I picked him up at the airport I immediately put his harness and leash on In the airport and allowed him to walk around because he wanted to explore. There were other people in the airport with their dogs on harness and leash but no one else with a cat. I got so many double takes. While in Germany I purchased a very long leash that way I could be outside with him and he could explore the yard without me having to walk a couple feet behind him. He really enjoyed that. RIP HoneyStormCrackheadPiggyCatDog aka Storm.
I take my dogs out for a walk everyday, and recently, my cat has been following us on the walk. I live in the suburbs, so traffic is not an issue, and the walk is fairly short. She's an old cat, so it's kind of "strange" that she now decides to go on walks instead of doing it when she was younger.
God, I wish I had found this channel when I first got my cat. I tried harness and leash training simultaneously and it was SO HARD. He clearly wanted to go out and I wanted him to be happy, so we powered through and now he’s a happy little leash boy, but I feel so bad that I put him through that and it could’ve been easier.
My cat hated being stuck in the harness/leash. See, he used to be all-outdoors, and something about being back out there made him feel like he should be able to run wherever he wanted. He tried to go under cars and if I resisted him at all he meowed like he was dying and twisted around like crazy. Not gonna fly. He finally managed to twist himself all the way out of the harness! What can you do. He's a happy indoors boy now.
"Number two, aaaaand you're single" We still like to be spoken to with respect, if you tell anyone to shut up, but especially a guy, they get defensive. Just don't look for approval and it'll go fine, as soon as you say, "that looks cute!" or, "I like that!" or worse, "what do you think of that, I think that's cool!", most guys will just take charge and dominate to come to the best collectively rational decision. Learn to just do it, do what you want, and if the guy doesn't like it, don't get into it. Most women invite criticism by opening up their decisions to discussion. Nike baby. Just. Do it.
I adopted a street cat from Russia last week! She's a two year old and takes the harness and leash amazingly! She wasn't phased at all and never tried to take it off! Walking her/chilling outside with her is awesome. She even understands the concept of the leash better than a dog. I am completely amazed how she's doing, especially because she's a young street cat. Now I'll look into clicker training thanks to you! Thank you! 😁
@I like Potatoes don't underestimate slav cat. Slav cat is superior in every way. Slav cat has kgb agent team always ready to fuck you over. When she rubs her chin against you, she just hides communist technology to make you die a slow death.
After my cat got out and lost in blizzard, I decided to teach him about outside. It started with the yard then round the house. A little bit more everyday, up to a hour long in forest or beach. He knows the outside world now, but still expects me to make the rounds at least once a day. Kept words an phrasing simple , it's amazing how much he now understands. 🐹🐦
This video is just in time! I was wondering if I should harness/leash train my kitten, while I wouldn’t walk her on streets like a dog but thought it might be a good thing for her to be familiar with such things just in case we will ever have a situation when she would need to be on a leash for a short time. Can’t wait for this video to premiere and see Jackson’s opinion!
My Rudy doesn't go for walks, but he gets yard time in the morning. He gets to hunt bugs, eat grass and get yelled by squirrels. He even defends his yard from people walking by. It's funny to watch him be all 'guard cat', but then if the mailman or whoever walks up to him, he wants attention and to be pet.
to be honest, i think if ur little friend is a kitten, starting off with just putting a harness on her all the time would be alright? thats what i did with my cat and now that shes fully grown she doesnt mind wearing it at all
My cat loves his walks and demands for the harness every day! He walks on streets (very much like a dog) and I love how delighted people seem to get whenever they see him strutting away! :D I never had to do any training with him: I put the harness on when he was a kitten and opened the front door, and off we went! He’s too excited to go out to remember the harness. The need for any training fully depends on your cat’s personality. :) Best of luck with your kitty!
I think I’ve successfully harness trained my cat thanks to this videos encouragement! Things I’ve realized. I started a month after I adopted my cat-and I think that worked against me. It was too soon. I think you should wait until you have that strong trust bond with your cat. Things that worked well: Actually walking around holding my cat outside. (Not forcefully, just chill- if he struggles I place him on the ground) He seemed to react calmer to the outside world in my arms rather than on the ground feeling vulnerable and this helped him feel used to outside. I would sit at the park with him on my lap and I do this if I think he starts to looks a bit scared or when a dog appears in the distance. He actually hates being carried in a confined space such as our lovely travel cat bag (we have it out at all times and play with him in it-no luck so far… he sleeps on the lid flapped out on the floor🤦🏼♀️) so holding him in the arms or lap was best for us. Also always taking him to the exact same location and space. When I noticed him feeling more confident and asking to go out onto the balcony to bird watch- that’s when walking him on harness became easiest and tail began to flagpole while outside on the harness. We don’t walk far since the park is near our house and he knows his way home which helps him feel secure. He shows us when he is ready to go home by walking towards home… then running. I don’t know why but he loves to suddenly run home 😂 maybe he is overwhelmed-or maybe he enjoys the playful jog-no idea but that’s the stage we are at now haha. It’s been 3-4 months so that’s good progress! Well done Beanie! 🐈⬛
That's what I'm currently doing with my indoor/but-interested-in-outside cat. I hold her and walk around the inside of the apartment building, up and down the stairs. Soon when I'm confident, I'll try holding her and take her outside briefly. Unlike you, I won't set her down outside without a harness. I'll go back inside if she starts to struggle. Then I'll try putting the harness on and hold her while walking around. I'm hoping it will distract her that she's wearing it, and she'll get comfortable faster with less flopping if she does flop. Will see. If that doesn't work, I'll try treat/clicker training.
@@alexapuerta yeah! And playing with your cat while they wear the harness is really good! We kept the harness in the toy cupboard so when he hears the sound of the toy cupboard being opened he runs over all excited and happy- then we quickly put the harness on while he’s mind is 100% focused on toys and it was easy! He is a very simple one track mind boy- when he thinks of toys or food, it consumes all this thinking energy. At the vet she used treats very efficiently to distract him from having his hair pulled out for samples and it was easy too lol 😂 he knew nothing was happening.
We take our oldest cat for a walk around the park and she loves it. There was no training involved, she is very obedient and doesn't run off. Our youngest, just over 1 year old, shows interest but is still a bit scaredy so we might try the click and treat method. See how it goes. Thank you so much for the advice!
My cat loves going on walks. I did run out of time once and did not take him on his adventure walks. He gave me the stink eye until i got this harness and we went outside. He is much happier after a good walk and play. So thank you for the tips. The encouragement 😸
Me after 30 years; 5 kittens, 3 adults 😽😻 (Moved here last January with my mates, found those 3 adults, 2 male 1 female, happen to lived here too. Valentine’s Day, she gave birth to 5 beautiful kittens, 4 male 1 female)
My cat absolutely loves his walks, he was being extra lovey kneading me twice and giving me blinky eyes and soft meows just so I can walk him. He usually try to wrestle my other cat around when he doesn't get his walks. And today he definitely found a new way to win. My other cat loves food as long as he gets his food he is a happy man, he absolutely hates the outside and we do not force him.
l definitely liked that statement as well. Also liked that he warned us that a cat may not walk but will find an interesting thing and sit looking/smelling it.
Whenever I walk my cat and he sees something he's scared of he runs to me, meows and waits to be picked up. And I will pick him up and when he's ready to go on I'll put him back down. It's so cute how much he trusts me ♡
I spent last Summer training my cat to harness, lease and go outdoors. Beatrice, my Mainecoon began to slowly explore and expand her walking activities. She was doing great. She played with all the dogs, she let people pet her then, another cat moved next door!!!!! Beatrice no longer does her walks but rather goes outside but stays in a 6 foot perimeter of the front door. The other cat has since moved but Beatrice is having none of it. In regard to harness and leash training, I left the harness in the same spot for a few weeks so Beatrice could check it out and put her pheromones on it which she did after about a week. I take Beatrice out twice a day, but I always ask her if she's ready. She , peeks down the stairs and has a good think about it then will come and sit by the door. She's brilliant about having her harness out on but if she displays a false positive about wanting to go out and I grab the harness, she pushes it out of my hand.
Somehow, I was able to just put the harness/leash onto the cat I just adopted and she was really loving it. Didn't do much walking though, mostly just stared at birds.
My boyfriend is a cat person but he still hates the idea of walking cat.. I want walk our boy since he is hyperactive even tho we play a lot with him and I think walks could help him to exhaust and be more chill at home
Sounds like you're cat would like it, and you would like it. Is you boyfriend just embarrassed for what other people will think seeing it? Tell him that you don't give a sh*t what other people think and take the initiative to do it, start a routine, where you can handle anyone in the neighborhood being like "walking a cat?!" Once it's the norm in your family, he'll feel better about it. Guys can be much more self-conscious than girls in doing things outside the norm. Women have had to get over that very early in life in order to do anything "un-feminine" and cool. Good luck!
It only takes one person to walk a cat. He can't tell you that you can't walk your cat if you want to, just as much as you can't tell him he has to. Unless he is worried about outdoor dangers for the cats safety, it is free game.
My daughter's two outdoor/indoor cats follow her when she takes her dog out for a walk. Of course, the dog is required to be leashed, but the two cats follow along behind on their own....no harnesses, no leashed. They go bc they WANT to. She also has our three rescue kittens in a little pram with a screen around it so they can't get out...we have several large owls and scavenger birds around the community l and we don't want the kittens to be their next meal. It's so cute to watch them walk the perimeter of the neighborhood as a close knit little group. I bought a sign for the pram that says YES I DO NEED ALL THESE CATS!
I found my cat in the street as a baby. He’s a door dasher so we started him on a harness as a baby and gave him treats when he came back in. He’s great on his harness now and loves exploring the back yard
My little Ross loves his walks. He sees that harness come out, he meows continuously, dashes to the door, and sits waiting for me to put it on so he can go out. He's so cute.
I just recently finally got our two kittens to take a real walk with the harness and leash. I was just.. shocked that they finally started walking with us instead of just laying there on the ground. Your videos have helped me and my husband understand our cats and make our home more comfortable for both them and us. You have been an absolute life saver with your videos.
I walk my male Cat on the Leash and he loves it :) But cause i work as a psych Nurse, my Neighbours give me that "ahhh yeah.. shes gone completely Nuts now" Look xD
I keep trying to get my brother to walk his cat but he’s worried about encountering other pets, walking at the same time. Do you guys find yourselves walking your cat at irregular times, to avoid others?
Jesse Jaime I just walked when it fit my schedule mostly. I avoided 5-7 p.m. when the majority were walking dogs in my neighborhood. Dogs freaked out more at my dogs than my cat.
I live across the road from some woods, and my cat follows me for a walk, no leash! If he doesn’t want to come all the way, he goes and hides and waits in the exact spot until I pick him up! (I found out the hard way when he didn’t come back and I had to go and find him, and he was waiting 5hrs later!) Now I have two, they both come out for a wander, it’s so cute!
I started walking my cat (him walking me, really) every day several months ago. I set an alarm every day at the same time-and he listens for it! Since it has become a routine, he doesn’t try to rush the door every time we open it, anymore. I just follow him around and let him go where he wants, as long as it’s safe. He generally wants to stay mostly in the front and back yard. I also let him stay out for as long as he wants. Sometimes he’s done in 15 minutes, sometimes it’s over an hour. I’ve had several people ask about him and tell me they wish they could get their cat to do it. I tell them that once the cat is used to the harness and associates it with going outside, and if you let him do his thing instead of trying to force him to walk a certain way, the cat gets used to it pretty quickly. You just have to be patient. It’s really great for cats that are dying to go outside. I wouldn’t force a cat that is happy inside to do it, however. It’s way different than walking a dog, but I have to say it’s pretty fun to witness his adventures every day. :).
Haywire, my cat from Mozambique went from roaming the garden and the street outside my house to living in a third floor apartment in Switzerland. After he had acclimatised to living in a flat and seeing the birds right below him in the tree, we got him a harness. He took to it like a fish to water once he realised harness meant taking dad walkies. He lived with my parents when I was off to foreign parts again. And by the time I returned, he went to the front door and jingled the keys to tell my dad he wanted to go for his round. It generally took them about two hours all over the quarter. And the funny thing was, if the two were not on their daily walk, neighbors called to enquire if ‘the kitty’ (Haywire the great would have been offended if he heard that term) was ok, not my dad, but the cat! 🤣
LOVE THIS!!! I moved to a new house twice in a year, the vet told me to get the cat used first to the new house, then to the new surroundings by taking her on a leash... she didn't really liked it at the beginning... but then everytime she saw the leash she knew it was time to go for our walk! after a month she was ok without!! we just have walks together and she knows where we are going, and when it's time to go!! LOVE LOVE LOVE my cat!
I do the same thing with my two! It's so fun. Aside from one REFUSING to walk on leash (he's the far more curious and energetic one) I gave up and found that they stay pretty close to me at all times, but additionally have been able to escape neighbors' dogs when needed because they weren't tethered to me (who would've been unable to prevent their injury or my own). Of course, my neighbor's think I'm weird, but my cats think I'm the coolest mom ever, so I'm sticking with that! After 5 or so years of this routine they are much happier and healthier than the previous 9.
My two pre-school sisters leash trained our cats. They didn't use clickers but did everything else you said. If the cat went off the path, they just stopped. Eventually, they were able to lead the cats. Their training program took about six weeks.
Ya... I tried the harness , and my 28 lb. Siamese/Maine Coon mix??? He said uh.uh... fell over on the floor and looked at me like I was looney...so , he likes the windows just fine...
Well thats the critical point. If you know that your cat has no urges to go outside, thats just fine. I had a friend who gave up on the harness after one try. Because his smol cat made a fuss. But as Jackson said and what everyone needs to understand is that disliking a harness doesnt equal "i dont wanna go outside" lol. There is no connection between those two things, initially. My friend now wants to try harness training again after his boy recently sneaked out of a window and didnt come back/wasnt found for 10 days straight. And altho he might have been stuck in a cellar for some of these days and overall probably had a difficult time, the outside experience changed him. Now he sits impatiently at the window half the day, trying to sneak out again through open doors or windows. He will still hate the harness, until he learned to associate it with positive things - first treats and later going outside. My friend doesnt seem very keen to spend the time that this conditioning process needs tho 😅 I have a bengal/coon mix and a siamese/thai (khao manee) boy and they both love being outside. I can let them go by themselves bc its fairly normal to have in/outdoor cats where I live. But my thai boy rather spends the outside time together with me whereas my coonie is quick to go on alone. Altho he also calls me to join him often.. Anyway its a nice experience, at least for us in our circumstances :) it always depends on a multitude of factors
I put a jacket on my step mom's Norwegian forest cat. He flopped. I picked up his favorite string toy and played with it. Within 5 minutes he was running around.
@@huemins Yes , each cat is different, aren't they? My boy ,BooBoo , wasn't interested in outside at all.... he'd rather sit on my lap or lay all over me than do anything that resembles exercise. Although we did get him to sit up , beg , roll over and fetch a hair tie ,it was only because he thought he was a dog.......
You need to harness train. Lots of cats think they're being held by something when a harness is on. Mine used to walk backwards to try to back out of it. You won't know if he'll like going outside on a harness until he's used to a harness.
*Me who doesn’t own a cat* “man, it sure is an absolute necessity to know how to walk a cat”
It may be a necessity for the cat's happiness.
I think they own us
Yeah, I watch these videos and dream....
Cats are in charge. We serve them.
Aww that’s so wholesome!
thats the best command, and more common than you think, or at least its variations.
i use 'where is my 'love'?'
This made me laugh so much! It's awesome! It could have been worse like: "Can I get some pussy?" 😂
@@darinaangelova2882 😂😂
That’s awesome.
My kitty now will sit by the leash and meow at me when she wants out. It's so cute. She just wants to chase bugs in the yard lol
I didn't train her to do that tho. Every time she wants something (To play, eat, ect) she will find me, meow, then lead me to what she wants. I always feel like we have a special bond and understand each other just by body language 💖
Mandy Kruse so cute! Sounds like a puppy-cat 😻

I think she loves the outdoors and fresh air but sticks by my side because she feels protected.
wow my 19 yr old cat who was an outdoor/indoor cat is now blind n i never thought about doing this but i def should bc she misses going outside but we cant have her out there freely anymore
my cat does this but SHE walks ME ^^
No leash tho
most people don't realise this, but cats eyes don't see the world like we do... their vision is a lot more blurried, especially at closer distances they see 10x more thanks to sound and smells.
This is the best story.

I trained my cat to come to me when I whistle which is awesome cause everyone expects to see a dog but no it's my cat I'm whistling for
I used to miaow out my back door (my cat was outside) as the sound carries further and he would come running.
what a wonderful subversion of expectations lmao
That is the exact reason I don't whistle for my cats. I don't want to have every dog coming up to me when my cat is outside. I use a kind of 'kissing' sound. They understand I want them to come when I make that sound.

My kitty, Onyx has been harness/leash trained since she was two months old. She's a true dog cat. She plays fetch, takes walks, climbs trees, plays in water, skateboards, turns on lights, opens doors, and is a hilarious little monster. Wouldn't change a thing!😊
That's how I want my kitten to be! How were you able to manage? Any tips??

I went to the shelter, my cat high fived me right when she saw me. I knew right there i had to adopt her.
My cat smacked me in the arm when I walked past his cage in the shelter. He would do this every time I got within in range. Didn't do this to the 5-6 other people looking to adopt. Guess he chose me.

I have the same issue! Hopefully a catio will help
Same issue. Constant caterwauling and dirty looks if I say no
I have the exact same problem here. I don’t want her to be out on her own, eating all kinds of birds and getting hit by a car. I’m also adding a little catio but honestly, she just wants out to kill.
Woah woah woah! We need like a whole video of it's own on this cat clicker training.
Seconded!
My boyfriend said 'It's me or the cats'. We miss him sometimes...

That's actually not a bad idea!

She runs for the door and climbs up my leg to get into it when I'm walking the dog, lol. She only likes to go around for about 5-10 minutes, so we only go on the potty break walks, but she loves it!

@@dablackkitten302 I think we
Since they moved house in a totally different area though, they've not taken the cats out for bike rides.
My cat walks with me and the dog. I think he just wanted to see where me and the dog were going. So now they go together.
i just found a feral kitten a month ago.
XD
NessaWyvern 😂 My cat does the same thing. I taught him to sit but if I don’t give him the treat afterwards he gets mad
Was she a calico?
We had a dachshund, a Labrador retriever and a neutered tomcat when I was growing up. The cat would exit the house after the dogs on leashes and "participate" in the walk. While the dogs sniffed trees and checked stuff out, the cat would stalk through the neighbors bushes, from yard to yard, following along. He did it his way, prowling, hiding in shadows and shooting across open spaces at a sprint. Occasionally, he would interact with the walkers, but it was mostly participation at a distance, enjoying his own private adventure.
For our cat it went like this:
Day 1
"OK, you want to go outside? Here's a harness."
Cat lies down, and refuses to move.
Day 2:
Cat thinks, "Woohoo! Harness means I can run all around outside! This is awesome!"
Now, you just say, "Harness?", and he is ready to go!
Quick learner
Im so sorry for your loss...😔
My boyfriends cats came in the same way too hehe
Mona, his cat, suddenly went inside his house and him and his parents were just like "well, hes our pet now"
I am so sorry for your loss :(
Hopefully, Jack is in a better place now!
Jack chose you and you loved him for the rest of his life. That is beautiful. Whenever you miss him thinking of this may help:
There is a story about a heavenly crossway called the rainbow bridge because of all it's beautiful colors.
Just this side of the rainbow bridge there is a land of meadows,
hills and valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place.
There is always food and water and warm spring weather.
The old and frail animals are young again.
Those who were sick, hurt, or in pain are made whole again.
There is only one thing missing,
they are not with their special person who loved them so much on Earth.
So each day the group runs and plays until the time comes
when one suddenly stops and looks up.
The nose twitches
and the ears stand as that one runs from the group!
You have been seen and when you and your special friend meet,
you take them in your arms and hug them.
They lick and kiss your face again and again -
and you look once more into the eyes of your best friend and trusting
pet.
I can’t believe they just put it back outside instead of keeping it
While we were choosing a cat at the center, my cat reached her paw out to me, we chose her
I live on the 21st floor and my cat was scared of the lifts so whenever I walk him I put his harness and leash on and then put him in his carrier until we get to the place where I walk him. Now he jumps in the carrier whenever he wants to go for a walk. It makes getting him to the vet an awful lot easier.
And that is a glorious way to prevent doordashing, too. He associates the carrier with walks, not the door. Beautiful.
As soon as it came off he would reactivate and go on like nothing happened.
same here
My cat was doing exactly the same thing.
You didn't try hard enough
That what I would be afraid of
Dude, this guy is a natural, I can be listening to him for hours. Responsible, informative, clear communication!
And he has cool ear mustaches!
Mine too..
Is your cat using the clicker on you too? 😆
What do you do during the winter? Do you still walk him?

He is 13 and has special needs. He is the smartest cat ever teehee. I love him. @SystemeDeCat on Facebook
EDIT: HE JUST LEARNED HOW TO FIST BUMP ME OMG. YAY!!!!!! who says cats aren't trainable :)
Nice! My 19 year old girl knows how to high five work both paws, come, give paw, sit, and so much more. What kind of special needs?
@@101Asa he has stress induced urinary problems, such as blockages. He nearly died :(
He is healthy now though.
Also removing the bell when I don’t want them asking to go out (like at night, or when it’s too wet since they won’t let me dry their paws back off)
My Luna goes out in a stroller because she won't wear a harness, but she insists she belongs outside. It's our compromise 😹
Sounds like a big baby, ah!
Lml I jus got two kittens and one is all for outside and the other isn't so maybe a stroller is best. Plus I have two small kids so tha will work lml😂

I used to walk my cats all the time when I lived in the city. My cats loved it!!! I did get some weird looks, but if the cats love it, why the f not.
Ik Ben hell ya! Fuck em
Good mentality :) Hope you and ur kitty staying safe :)
If you have a very friendly and/or cute cat, it's fantastic way to meet people, including some very pretty ladies (if you're into that kind of thing)
I think it's ok that you got to a happy place using a different technique.

We still like to be spoken to with respect, if you tell anyone to shut up, but especially a guy, they get defensive.

My cat loves his walks and demands for the harness every day! nacho jimenez I’ve seen one of y’all on the street...walking your cat...
Guys think cats are hard to understand (not all) my husband loves cats as does my grown son and my grandson yeah
@@snowfoxxie Good examples of positive reinforcement.
We take our oldest cat for a walk around the park and she loves it. There was no training involved, she is very obedient and doesn't run off.

My cat loves walks. She was an outdoor cat until recently. Now she is an amazing hiking buddy. It didn’t even take a week to do great on her leash

One day a stray showed up at my door and now he lives on my porch. He is super cute and friendly. He does the same thing
I found my cat in the street as a baby. He’s a door dasher so we started him on a harness as a baby and gave him treats when he came back in. He’s great on his harness now and loves exploring the back yard
I got extremely lucky with my cat when I got her a harness. She didn't care that it was on her and took her outside the following day. She loves it
My little Ross loves his walks. He sees that harness come out, he meows continuously, dashes to the door, and sits waiting for me to put it on so he can go out. He's so cute.
My aunt has seven outdoor cats, some of whom go on hikes with her and her other animals (a dog, pig, and two goats).
Wow! Your aunt is the female version of Ace Ventura! 👍
I wish I was your neighbour
Vanessa Cottogni my neigjbor tried to tell me it was unsafe for me to walk my cat. She is now 14 yrs old and still unharmed from walking. Lol.
Robin D okay cool. Haha really? That’s something I wouldn’t expect, but good to know!
Thanks for sharing
I would love my cat fo be like that!
@@Nina4238 I don't care what people think ... I'm going to do this when I get a cat!
My friend doesnt seem very keen to spend the time that this conditioning process needs tho 😅
I have a bengal/coon mix and a siamese/thai (khao manee) boy and they both love being outside.

Lolololol ! Ahhhhhh, cats...

Yes , each cat is different, aren't they? My boy ,BooBoo , wasn't interested in outside at all.... he'd rather sit on my lap or lay all over me than do anything that resembles exercise. Although we did get him to sit up , beg , roll over and fetch a hair tie ,it was only because he thought he was a dog.......
You need to harness train. Lots of cats think they're being held by something when a harness is on. Mine used to walk backwards to try to back out of it. You won't know if he'll like going outside on a harness until he's used to a harness.
