@Paddington look, I don't argue with it. But this is a tv show, and the showrunners claimed to want to give Clay's death, meaning that something good comes out of it. But nothing good came out of it. Yes, he stopped the guy from taking his own life, but the guy's ran. He's even more traumatized now, and the guilt is even more pronounced. I'm guessing nothing, and no one will stop him from killing himself now that life has proven that it's just out to get him for real. So maybe if that story ends somewhat better, maybe it's a fitting ending to a character, but if not, it was just an awful and tragic send off to a man who was no longer a soldier and was planning to leave with his wife and baby for a better future. (Sorry for the long reply.)

  • @T42oqq

I didn't watch too many TVs but this is probably one of the best scripted death/exits for any character I have ever seen. It's unexpected while being completely reasonable and foreshadowed. He died doing an honorable thing, which responds to what has been haunting him since Swaney's death and his incapacitation. Yes none of us want him to die that way and it's truly a shame, but that's what such a realistic show like this should strive to deliver, and the creators pulled this off brilliantly. Clay, as a character, is completed.
Unlike Full Metal, whose death was nowhere as impactful, Clay's journey to death is shown as the consequence of many issues in many aspects combined: Clay's struggle with self-esteem and incapacitation, he and Stella's trust issue, Jason's TBI and stubbornness to remain leader, Bravo's cohesion issues, social support for vets, the US's geopolitical policy, endless wars, and even gun control. The creators deserve credit for granting his inevitable exit such immense weight and deep messages.

Its not about clay deserving it. He decided to leave the show to do another project called fire county. The writers were not planning on having him die. He was too much of a main character and the actor was too significant to just he written out until he left on his own. To me thats a double loss. I wish he wouldve stayed. The matter of Clay's survival was literally his own choice.

Instead, they just killed him off like yeah we don’t want you coming back so we’re gonna kill you off nice working with you. Just watched the episode where Swanny has his funeral after committing suicide. They gave a side character a BETETR send off than Clay. No coffin with the Tridents embedded on the lid...no military send off...No words from the team or team leader....No closure with his wife. The picture they hung on the wall was even a bad / dark picture you could barely see it was Clay....The whole death of Clay was 100% sour grapes by the Producers...they were pissed he was leaving so ruined his character..... Disgraceful the way they treated a main character who actually made the show a hit.

Let me start by saying, I thoroughly enjoy this show!! As someone who often steers clear of military/tactical TV series (because a lot of it goes over my head), what drew me to this show were the characters. I CARE about them, and that's crucial when trying to draw in viewers so they're invested every episode. Having said that, I fell in love with "Clay Spenser" early on. To witness his journey from the early hopes of joining Bravo until the moment he realized he was on a different path was such a joy to see. Despite no longer being a part of the action, I still cared about him, Stella, and little Brian. I was enthusiastic about what was in store for them. Never in a million years did I expect that journey to end so tragically. This ending had me in disbelief. A part of me even thought, he's survived everything else. Maybe he'll survive this, too. When I realized it was truly the end ... let's just say I developed a headache from crying so much. "Sonny's" reaction was similar to my own. Disbelief, then total breakdown. While I understand many feel Clay died doing what he believed in, which was helping another in need, I can't help feeling it was senseless. He had de-escalated things by the time the security guard showed up. Ben was calm. Clay died because he was PERCEIVED to be a threat!! That guard saw a man holding a firearm standing in close proximity to another. This is why I'll never see the silver lining in Clay's death. Tremendous performances by the cast, and my hat's of to the show runners, but I will ALWAYS see this as a senseless tragedy. Realistic, but senseless nonetheless. It's still hard for me to watch this scene.

Absolutely the WORST way to end his character arc. They intentionally RUINED his character because he was leaving for another show. All they had to do was let him leave with Stella , go live on a farm and have a good ending.... maybe have him back as a guest appearance as a blackwater contractor from time to time or join a CIA spook team for the odd appearance. His story with Stella was a great evolution of relationship and his growth as a person. To end it like this??? What a disgrace! AND they didnt even give him a funeral!!! This was a total slap in the face of Clay and a slap in the face of all the fans!!! The fans deserved better! Stella got like one scene crying about it and it as over. not a realistic death from my perspective, Clay is putting the gun down and he's still getting shot, what kind of security guard is that ? the whole shoot 1st ask later is totally wrong and also it's not how the guard's work, they should neutralize the shooter, not killing him. The writer of the show clearly has no sense of how the guard or the police officer works, this is unrealistic death ever

The reason Clay died is because the actor decided to leave the show to do another project called fire county. The writers were not planning on having him die.
