Fun fact: the Wizard Truetype was sold in the US exclusively through a now defunct store chain called "Western Auto", which was more like a department store than an auto parts store (despite the name). The chain's logo was the stylized "WA" that you see in between the "Wizard" and "Truetype" on the front. (:
There is at least 1 "western auto" left.. It's in Juneau Alaska.

I'm so behind on watching your videos... there have been several tragedies in my family over the past few months... I haven't even cleaned or used my first typewriter that I bought at the beginning winter as of yet either!!! Actually sad and embarrassed about THAT too!

Thank you for posting this. I'm also a fan of Simple Green. I don't have any typewriters to clean with it, but I've used it for years to clean my bicycles. It does a great job of getting old lube and gunk out of bicycle chains and other parts, and unlike most solvents used for that purpose, it contains no noxious chemicals and doesn't set off my wife's allergies when I use it indoors. I buy the green all-purpose formulation in gallon jugs and use those to refill may spray bottle. After seeing what a great job it did on your typewriter cases, I think I will get some of the lemon scented version and use it for cleaning our minivan in a couple weeks. Maybe this time, my wife won't have to drive around with the windows open for a week in unpredictable Chicago weather until the fumes subside.
There's also a non-scented and a lavender! I just got them to try too

What kind of writer are you, @@JustMyTypewriter? Do you write about politics, popular culture, movies or books, journaling about your day-to-day life, cooking? I think your interest in typewriter is very cool; however, unusual for our generation since we've been in front of this computer our whole life.
@@Zachw2007 I'm not a writer at all! I collect and repair typewriters mostly for the love of their history. I use them to write pen pal letters, but I am by no definition any kind of writer.

Thanks for the videos really enjoying them. You need to add a toothbrush and a small scrubbing brush when cleaning cases especially around the stitching - you will be amazed how it works.
I use a toothbrush on the internal pieces- I don't know why I didn't think to add it to the case! Thank you for the advice!
I guess I've never had that much patience to use a Q-tip when cleaning keys. I've actually covered the keyboard of a machine with a paper towel and sprayed my cleaner on it. It was pretty gross to see the yellow spots begin to appear on it with no scrubbing whatsoever. I will give Simple Green a try on some more stubborn (>120 year old dirt/gunk on my keys).
Around 15:09 it looks like you're working on a Brother Webster that's missing the left grommet for the top cover--I'm in the exact same situation! Any tips/suggestions on what to replace it with?
Yes! It was a brother wizard true type- I used rubber automobile hosing which you can cut down to size to replace those!

Patch testing.. the most vulnerable spot is always the decals. Especially the gold on the Underwood and SC etc. I haven't found anything other than just plain water what won't take that gold color off. 😕
How do you know what strength to use and what dilution amount? Or do you just use the concentrated strength? I don't know why the concentrate is in a spray bottle in the first place if it's meant to be diluted.
There is a non-concentrate version in the green formula I use directly out of the bottle. I typically use the weaker dilution as suggested on the back on the bottle (I think it's 1:10) when using the concentrated version
@@JustMyTypewriter My store only had the concentrated one so I bought a dilution bottle. I recently purchased a Coronet electric typewriter wish me luck this will be my first cleaning and testing! Thanks for all your helpful videos :-)

@@JustMyTypewriter @Just My Typewriter Well I procrastinated 3 weeks but I finally did it! They both (Corona Seventy & Coronet Automatic 12) look really well and you're right Simple Green is amazing! I did the 1:10 dilution as you recommended. The oridinal idea was that I would only keep one of the electric typewriters but now I can't decide since they both type very well lol. I really hate the cases these came with so I'm trying to figure out alternatives. Now my quest is to find a manual typewriter so that I have one electric and one manual!!

I wish i knew what the italian version of the all purpose simple green is. Is it a degreaser? Maybe something like chanteclair
I've also been testing more readily available cleaners! Method shower spray has also worked for me (there's a video on the channel!) Always patch test first to check
@@JustMyTypewriter now that you mention it, i think I've watched it but my 3am typewriters videos watching doesn't allow my brain to save much information. Must be the one where you said "be sure that it has no bleach in it or it can damage the exteriors of the machine" (i'm paraphrasing here).

In Europe, Simple Green is sold only as an industrial product. Does anyone know either how to get it or any alternatives?
I've been testing other products as well! I know method cleaner is more widely available and have tested that with positive results on this channel!
