    Ted Monk : the man, the myth, the legend. You are lucky he helped you with those parts, very kind, even if you paid him for them. Also very cool story about those tools.
    The "price of an education" here is fairly high. I suggest taking lots of photos of things as you are taking anything apart. Weeks later it isn't so obvious at all how things go, and a picture can really help. Also, putting screws back in where they came from, if you can, so you don't lose them or mix them up with different length ones. I've never replaced a escapement mechanism, so you have done more than me there... I get a bit scared of that stuff. A bridge too far, at least for now.
    An old technician I know calls the e-clips "Jesus clips". He said he calls them that because when they pop off they go flying and you say "Jesus! Where did that go?". Haha. I got a box of 400 on eBay for $20, and I suggest you get some spares so losing one is not a drama.

    Very good Sarah. I used to build some of these and other SCM models from scratch at the factory. Assembly the carriage onto the frame and all the adjustments. Plus did alignment of type-bars. After the demise of the factory the end of an era. l did typewriter maintenance and repairs for nearly 12 months. I once aligned a large imperial typewriter it was a beautiful machine. Love doing doing this.

    That's a lotta learnin' in a small blue package! (: Big props for persistence, though - these Corsairs are not especially sturdy machines, so it doesn't surprise me that stuff got bent out of whack. Still, you managed to remove and replace the subassembly that is probably the most difficult, important and easily maladjusted in the whole machine, *and* took the carriage off and got it back on. That's high-level wrenching, right there, and the fact it works after all that is super impressive :D

    Very educational. I just bought a Sears Tutor, which is just a rebadged Corsair. The inside is filthy but hearing about your experience I'm absolutely not taking it apart. 😱 Whatever doesn't come out with canned air will just have to stay there. BTW the leftmost and rightmost type slugs hit the inside of the ribbon cover. I guess I don't really need to type As that often. 😂

By far the smoothest, lightest, most comfortable portables I own- like my KMM, just smaller. I've heard alot of negative things about the slightly later models that have the tombstone shaped keys, so I shy away from them... I scored a 1967 Blue Corsair. Fully cleaned it and polished it up. Then ONE space in the middle of the carriage travel path locks. I'm going to have to fully disassemble to repair.
    NO. NO. NO.
    Cannot get the platen off.
    It was sheared. That's the term for a clean, symmetrical break.

  • @edwardweiss7145

    I cringed watching this video with all of my headaches with my Corsair Deluxe- and yeah, I learned the hard way that there's a tiny line inside the ribbon spool that's supposed to easily slide into the groove of the ribbon spindle IF you line it up correctly before pushing it down- Yeah.... hard lesson to learn, as removing the ribbon was such a chore! My space bar is too high now after I played with it, so it finally advances the carriage but so hard to hit the bottom row of keys with the space bar at practically the same height--- I just can't find the sweet spot that will clear in the resting and the depressed positions...
    BUT meanwhile, next time you visit A.D. ... you won't find that overpriced Royal ... I sorta gave in ... and honestly, it's like it's brand new. First time ever buying a duplicate typewriter, but the Royal Quiet DeLuxe is worth the exception in my opinion. (This is the round key version with the metal rings around the glass keys and the rectangular Shift Freedom shift keys)
    So glad you got your Corsair Deluxe working- I'm not giving up on mine ... YET ... LOL!

    I just bought one of these machines and am trying to diagnose an issue with it, lol. I think my issue is much easier to fix though. It is that the ribbon doesn't dart up when the keys are pressed. I identified that the lever to select which part of the ribbon to use has flex in it and doesn't allow it to change to the detent and there seems to be a component that has a spring but the spring is never in tension. I think that has somethign to do with it.

    Wonderfully explained thank you, also, I just thought "e-clips" were circlips...who knew.
    Mind you, here in the UK we call lots of things names you Americans call something completely different.
    Talking about the exact nature of the operation of the corsair, and the fact it will ONLY operate if everything is correctly aligned etc. I have an Oliver Number 9 from 1917 and it is so forgiving, it will work even if it is missing all kinds of screws and bits. It just copes.

    Hi Sarah! Would you be able to share more information on how you took the carriage off? I have 2 Coronas, and both have a bad case of sticky loose dog, and the carriage often goes flying to the margin stop. I feel that the only way to properly clean this is to take the carriage off to get full access, if that's possible. I've Googled for instructions and couldn't find anything. I know a few more people would appreciate that! Thanks!

    I'm finding the same problem with my Corsair Deluxe from about 1967. I'm just trying to figure out how to take the case off the bottom. My problem is the space bar goes dead at #47. The release enables me to go past #47. Now I'm dreading working on this as I have already seen it's not friendly. Otherwise the typewriter works ok. So are there 2 latches up front to push aside to take off the front? In your video it appeared to be.

    • @JustMyTypewriter

  • @ka-powUSA

    I have the same model. And even though it only cost me $5, it is a burden. It is difficult to remove the outer body, so much so that it remains the only typewriter I own which has not been cleaned inside. Fortunately everything works mechanically. The only problem I've had so far is that the ribbon spools won't come off. Instead of breaking their posts, I am leaving them in place with the 40-year-old ribbon it came with. It's on my to-be-sold pile for next year's summer flea market season.

    • @JustMyTypewriter

    What kind if ribbon does this machine take?

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  7 месяцев назад

      You can use a standard bi-color ribbon. The trick is the spools! They're smaller than a standard spool. Look for spools listed as "ultra portable" or re-wrap a new ribbon on your old spools if you still have them

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  Год назад +1

      I'm not entirely sure what you're describing! Often these issues can come from a multitude of things. I would first check to see if there are springs attached to your shift and shift lock keys. It could also be that your ribbon vibrator (where the ribbon is inserted to slide up and down to type) is dirty which doesn't let it line up with your letters. Try cleaning out the track where that slides as well.

    It was pretty, but I don't care for the plastic body. It was missing several springs here and there. I have one parts machine that I was able to steal a spring from, and fashioned a couple of my own. What a repair nightmare! My husband isn't as accommodating as your Dad. He'll help me, but under protest. 🙁
    I fixed her up with a lot of frustration, vowed to never buy that style again, and promptly sold her so I wouldn't have to look at her anymore. 🙂
