Collin Morikawa Swing Analysis: Great Pivot Movement and Left Wrist Flexion Add Up to Awesome Impact

  • This video was originally published on my website WayneD.com July 20th 2020 if you haven't joined it you should as there is much much more of my content there than here. Congratulations to recent PGA Major Champion Collin Morikawa. If you also watched the tournament at Muirfield Village you know that Collin Morikawa is the real deal, as great ball striking and putting put him over the top against another excellent young player, Justin Thomas. In this video (thanks to my friends at TaylorMade) we get perfect camera angles of an iron swing from both face on and down the line. There are many things of note on display: his grip is unconventional to say the least, his left hand weak but with the thumb positioned to the far right of the grip, while his right hand is in a much stronger position with the “V” pointed outside the right shoulder. This allows him to utilize left wrist flexion (bowing) more so than just about any player I’ve ever analyzed, even John Rahm and Dustin Johnson. His pivot movement is spot on, as his athletic build lets him crank his upper body up over his lower with extremely limited lower body movement. He is different than a lot of players who appear to be actively restricting the hips and legs: he does it effortlessly and from listening to how non-technical he is approaching swing mechanics not on purpose. In transition he has the magic Wayne D “crunch” move, deepening his right hip as he changes direction, and he has a huge amount of lateral movement to go along with quick rotation (his left knee disappears well before his arms reach even P5). It is apparent from the look of his impact position that he compresses the hell out of the ball, and with his smooth tempo (almost slow in the backswing) and ultra-stable setup and overall movement it is no surprise that he hits the ball so well.

@Wayne Defrancesco Golf Learning Center thanks for sharing and taking the time to post ... Are there any drawbacks of that right heel coming off the ground so early ... some instructors say that it can cause the shaft to go off plane .... again thanks for posting ...

My glutes always fire during my takeaway. And usually when I bend to pick the tee up. Any suggestions for a fix?

This is turning the right side around the left side VS turning right and left around the center like GG golf. He does the first one that's why he has lateral movement to establish left post.

I don't see a whole lot of lower body rotation post impact, also typical of the modern power player ie the jump/stall swing. There is less synching between arms and body from P6 to P8. Not a fan of this action but who am I to say what is right / wrong, the kid has 3 wins in about a year and I don't see that stopping over the next few years.

This is a ridiculous comment. The old school teachers like yourself just don't get it. The guy pures his irons maybe better than anyone in history.
The modern swing has more power which means the hips/pelvis (center of mass) has already rotated. Look at how open his hips are at impact! All that has to happen is for his connected torso/swing to follow the hips. The modern swing has a full rotation where as the old swing has more of a 3/4 swing arc. Thats why a lot of big hitters like Maria Fassi end up going backwards because they are completing a full rotation which makes the club accelerate really fast thru the ball.

I find it so interesting how the left leg straightens at impact then, as you mention the firing of the glutes, the left knee bends a little. I've seen Kuchar do this in a more exaggerated way.

Judging by how far he sets up behind the ball I would expect he is left eye dominant, unusually common amongst great golfers but rare in the general population.Only watched a bit of video so far but he may be a leftie playing right like Speith which would explain the unusual grip and why his a great iron player.

Left leg movement is a little contrived on the backswing. But it does position him to have less movement necessary to get him out of his own way. I wonder with these types of swings (including DJs) where will they be into their 40s when they have more wear and tear and less mobility vs Hogan's etc where the left side has more traditional movement going back, ie symmetrical with the right leg going back.

I don’t like him being that much on his right toe at impact. Justin Thomas is similar but has more heel lift, and it leads to recovery with the hands at times. I play toe up when my hands are hip high on my backswing. I always have. It hit my three woods almost 300 yards and have a 3 handicap. (My real handicap is that I cannot out from inside 10 feet.) Anyway, I don’t see that as nonsense or wrong because we all do it differently. I love your breakdowns and even notice the head lowering in this swing. All good players do that, but it’s only wrong when Tiger does it.

Same idea Mike Austin said, you have to drive your right side thru the impact. That's exactly what he does here.

Is the helicopter move done consciously, or is it the result of the start of the downswing. Or something else.

    • @wallstreetoneil

If you put a baseball in your hand and put it back in the about to throw position, the first thing to fire is the elbow. When the elbow does this go forward movement towards the target, the opposite happens initially to the hand holding the ball - it reverses and goes backwards (it creates the wiping action that creates speed). The same happens when hitting a tennis forehand - the hand/racket goes back as the elbow goes forward. The 'laying off' of the club at the top you see pros do, which can also importantly be a slight downcocking/loading of the right wrist for additional stored power (just like throwing), is a firing of the right elbow led action. If 95% of amateurs would think of firing their right elbow to begin their golf downswing (and twist/torque the grip to further square the club at the same time), they would instantly get this automatic laying off of the club that teachers talk about - but it will happen naturally as a byproduct of firing the elbow.

Do we have a micro initiation move? Absence is a mixed situation. Many younger players have imperceptible initiation.

The slide allows for the forward shaft lean at impact. Every great player has alot of forward shaft lean. Its a requirement! Yes its alot of movement, but its athletic and its a large set of muscles making it easier to repeat!

    • @A-FrameWedge
      @A-FrameWedge Год назад

No the slide of the lower body is not the reason for shaft lean, because these players do not slide their upper body forward, so shat lean comes from either getting right elbow forward or to at least in front of right hip or roasting so that your shoulders are open at impact.

Wayne I like to review all your analysis of the fine professionals, both young and old. I know you get tons of requests, and I would love to see you do two players that I have though a great deal about. From a long time back Fuzzy Zoeller and in recent years Stacy Lewis. Those two have really intrigued me; seriously. Thanks
