  • Went out to do a little exploring. In this video we'll visit a city in the far northeast of China called Harbin, or sometimes spelled 'Haerbin' (哈尔滨市) located in China's northeasternmost province of Heilongjiang (黑龙江省). This region, the northeast, is referred to as 'dongbei' (东北) in Mandarin and it consists of three provinces: Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang Provinces.
This city has a very unique history and a heavy Russian influence that lasts until today (predominantly in the architecture). There was once a time in China, and it wasn't all that long ago, where one could have seen people from many different nationalities walking the streets of Harbin. Nowadays, things have changed. I did not see ANY other obvious 'foreigners' there during my visit.
Some places we visited in this video were:
    St. Sophia's Church
    Zhongyang Pedestrian Street
    The Songhua River
    Stalin Park

I travelled to Harbin last week and I also did a couple of vlogs. Harbin Ice and Snow world was a wonderful experience.

Thankfully, I met a local who took me to several delicious restaurants.
    Always Serendipitous when this happens.

Yeah - I could have done the northeastern food thing, but I eat that all that time. I was wanting some good, authentic Russian cuisine, which Harbin used to have, but from what I can see, is pretty much gone now. 😔

Yup, the shuttle trade is in the past now. Today people just order on the internet or even if they visit China to select products to buy, they will just pay for its shipping.

Visited Harbin about 20years ago. Dog sled guy charged us RMB 500 for a 20min ride. Later found out that it was normally RMB 100. And a tanghulu vendor over charged me for a strawberry tanhulu like double the normal price. Still, I had a good time there. Your video brings out the memories.

@@chopsticksandtrains it is 100% still open 😆 just checked with my friend who visited that cobblestone pedestrian street today, I guess you can visit next time! I’ve honestly been there myself a few years ago but I can’t honestly recommend it. If you’re in Harbin you gotta try the GuoBaoRou, nowhere else beats Harbin’s version.

their accounts are linked to their national id card..
so, yeah… it’s all easily monitored and traced back. And yeah, some Chinese use VPNs, but the vast, vast majority do not.

@@chopsticksandtrains Good to know. Appreciate! I wonder about my friends and colleagues there. Last msg I got was a sweet kid who ran away from the Harbin school. With his limited English he told me not to worry, he was fine, & we msgd a short while…then nothing until Covid when he simply asked “can get me antigens.”. Of course I couldn’t, but wonder how he’s doing and where he is. ☹️
