Half-Life 2 - E3 2002 Trailer

- This early Half-Life 2 trailer, released around May 16, 2003, is comprised entirely of year old footage from Valve's cancelled presentation for E3 2002. The music was composed by Chris Jensen, the composer of the Half-Life: Opposing Force soundtrack. The track is actually recycled from many tracks cut from the Opposing Force soundtrack and is titled "Mishaps In The Reactor Chamber Part 1 - Track 03". Chris made the tracks available on SoundCloud after he exchanged several e-mails with Klow from the wiki but has since removed them.
This trailer was made around the time Elder Scrolls Morrowind and Grand Theft Auto Vice City came out. That's just wild!
I'm pretty sure a lot of games around this time didn't even have dynamic lighting, reflective surfaces, emotive facial animations, and a proper physics engine. That's how ahead Valve was with this game.
Das Problem ist, dass GTA und Elder Scrows eine offene Welt haben, Half Life jedoch nicht, also haben sie damals versucht, sich keine Sorgen um die Grafik zu machen
@@Great_britan_today_im_going hl2 was semi open world, it was linear but the maps were pretty big.
It's not semi-open world, it's a very linear game. Nothing wrong with that, I like linear shooters and Half-Life is great, but yeah.
gta vice city actually had a pretty good physics engine, but hl2 is on another level.

I specifically remember those blue tentacles attacking the dude, and my young mind ablaze with excitement. But prime among my thoughts was, "Woh, they're making a _second_ one? You mean _other_ people know about that game I played on the computer? Awesome!"
ah the hydra, back then I never heard of the Beta until I found out about mods like Dark Interval and Raising the Bar Redux (missing information doesn't count since it's a collection of beta maps with no story).
A right Gabe in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world...
So wake up, Mr Newell, wake up and.... smell the steam sales....
1:02 love that crouch to show the water reflections
Im too
I still remember playing with the leak and that little demo scene. The char models just stop in place right after what you see in the video happens.
For 2002 that was AWESOME!!!

@@Devilot91 No, it's 2002

@@caiogabriel1613 trailer was leaked in 2003 but video was made in 2002
Mr Prisen it’s 2003. Now just shut up. The difference could be just 1 day from ‘02 and 03’. What you should be talking about is how much innovative this looks compared to vice city for example
Let's just get a moment to say that this was MADE IN 2002 the games that release that time would be completely defeated by Half-Life 2 seriously this trailer is FUCKING AMAZING
It's eerie how similar to Goldsource this still is, like you can see the old viewbobbing and viewroll is still there and the new sprint behaviour wasn't implemented yet, it also still had the old menu, even in the 2003 leak
Yeah, you are totally right. I definitely looked over the bobbing and lack of view model sway when I first watched it. Nice eye.
Even in the 2003 demo you can see they were still using the HL1 blood sprites.
Honestly I wish they kept the viewroll from HL1 😅
am i the only one that finds things like leaked betas really intresting?
its like taking a snippet out of time from over a decade ago.
the internet is really cool
I think the original HL2 concept and beta was more original, creative and more visually interesting and compelling then the retail version.
I'd like to see if I can get the WC map pack working with Gmod 13, I wonder if anyone knows how to do that.
Ben 1337 perhaps copy and paste from old hammer to new hammer and compile? sounds rather dumb but it just might work
You're not alone. Coming back to this stuff after becoming really interested in game development has blown my mind. Of course, then there's the inevitable feeling of sad nostalgia...
+TheTehme The reason a lot of the beta stuff is cut is because a hacker leaked almost the whole game onto the internet in 2003, and so Valve remade the entire game in a rushed period of time. They still managed to made a good game, but I think the original version would've been much better. Someone has to make a finished mod of what was originally going to be Half-Life 2. I would fucking LOVE to see that. There's a team working on what Half-Life 1 was originally going to be prior to it's revision after it was decided the original version wasn't good enough, and while I'm very interested in that, I'd much rather see the original version of Half-Life 2.
+Particular Particle And guess what? We're not really going to see a finale of the Half Life series.
If someone does make a HL2 mod of what was going to be originally Half Life 2, it would be a HUGE slap in the face for Valve since they'd have allowed the community to work on their version of Half Life.
Thing is is that I would have liked to see the Borealis, I would have liked to see all of the new locations and the winter fights.

it looks good even now
but, the real HL2 game files from 2003, was tottaly different, it contains blurry textures, alot of missing models "ERROR" and alot of terrible stuff, they arleady made a fix patch for this.
@@rapappathepepper3996 yep
@@rapappathepepper3996 The game was still in development.
If you mean the mod then yeah.
@@White927 well idk why would i apply patches for a beta, to then keep playing the beta without issues, except it just lacks, i know there's the WC map pack and i can compile alot of old maps but then, most of those maps arent fun to walk at as well, and fixing can be sort of fun but also sort of underwhelming the results
@@rapappathepepper3996 Go check out raising the bar - redux those guys are putting alot of effort for the beta

This trailer was leaked during the Black Mesa Incident.

It’s 2022…And still the best game series ever made
actually, extreme paintbrawl has more entries and is better than half life. get on the new wave.
Now almost '23, still one of the best
The greatest game even in 2023
"Get Your Free TVs!" was a in-house demo. Valve never publicly released any video based on it, sadly.
Half Baked XD
Best 2002 gaming trailer ever
This was 1 year after blue shift. Let that sink in
00:57 that scene blows my mind when I saw it for first time
It looks really well animated to! It's very smooth. It seems smoother than animations we have in Half Life 2 as it is now. Also that combine soldier suit looks a lot like the ones in Half Life Alyx. I wish they kept that style of Combine Soldier for Half Life 2.
Also that neon blue tentacle monster looked so cool. Idk why they didn't keep it.
@@Knight_Of_Eleum_Loyce They cut it not long before release because they couldn't make it fun to fight against.
@@Knight_Of_Eleum_Loyce It seemed it never evolved into anything real gameplay wise. In the leak that scene is 100 percent scripted. It's just a map with that one scene that plays and that's it.
@@KingMetalMario Yes, but Valve contradicted itself, because the development of the tentacles in the previous game was preserved, not abstracted, but kept.
2020... half-life Alyx ... 17 years after ... I’m very old
Fun fact: The guy responsible for the music also did the OpFor sountrack
The music was indeed created initially for Opposing Force, but went unused.
already sounded like something from opposing force for me
It's interesting to see, that Valve, by 2002 (possibly 2001), already settled on a much more unique Eastern European setting, there's still a missconception that they just changed the setting around 2003, or some think that they changed the game because of the leak. It's also interesting to note, that the lightning and skybox still retains some element from the 2000-2001 Half-Life 2's style. Also, those water reflections would look aswesome even today, it's so weird, that they managed to make it that good already in 2002 (possibly even earlier)
The style did change in 2003, from a classic Central European one seen here, to a more Eastern Soviet one that was kept for the final game.
That's not weird, the graphics are good *because* of the era. No one at Valve today would have the talent to create something so beautiful.
Half-Life 2 was the first and last time I was immensely impressed with a video game
Than it sucks to be you i guess. There was so many great games after HL2...
I wrote immensely impressed, I have been impressed with other games sure. But not as much as Half-Life 2.

@@Batwarkov again those are great games but he said immensely impressed who are other people to bash him for stating what is his top most number 1 game?

i like how there's the old half life 1 weapon bob
Anyone else remember downloading "high quality" bink format versions of these HL 2 videos back in the day?
Did anyone notice that the wiggling of the weapon was different?
It used the original walking/running mechanics of Half-Life 1. While I like the walking/mechanics we got in Half-Life 2 today, the weapon turning lag is a bit too much.
They didn't change Half-Life 2 because it was leaked, and you're a fool to believe that.
Remember when the game exceeded the expectation of the trailer? Those were good times.
I am here after Half-Life: Alyx trailer.
Benjámin Kurilla same 😭😭😭
Okay.
same
Can't believe that we had such a technology in a damn 2002!
They actually cut it from the game because of the exact opposite. Apparently the Hydra was awesome to watch, but in combat against it it was very easy to die for what seemed like no reason simply because the Hydra didn't telegraph it's attacks properly.
I think that Gabe has to do a Half-Life 2 with all the things that were cut, so the people can know trying it out and knowing what was cool for the game.
Is it just me or does that combine soldier at 1:00 look like some of the combine soldiers in Half Life Alyx? I wish they kept that design for HL2.
It does sort of resemble the Ordinal or Wallhammer with the blue accents.
too bad we didnt get this cancelled masterpiece, no wasteland, no cool weapons no free tvs and gasmasks, shame on gabe!
Well the reason is,it got leaked in 2003 so valve had to literally change everything
@@SD-R_IC-0nSimp some people say not because of the leak, but because valve didn't see their vision in there
CombineOverWiki has its own channel!?! That's beast!
Man, I wish i had an OICW in HL2...
the first time i have played it was on 2006 .i want to go back in 2002 and watch this trailer ,this must look much better than any game announced these days. on 2003 i had a friend saying oh my ***** god how you didnt hear about half life 2 he was saying i have no words to explain how perfect is this game.and now this is my favorite game for ever.
the beta spas 12 and the headcrab and the fire look amazing ngl
oh man, i would love to see this version of the game. such an eerie and atmospheric feeling that you really just get sucked in by its realism
Despite how awesome the beta looks (Especially the Combine Guard), What we got was still awesome.
yes it is,but the dark atmosphere of the beta it really casts Dr. Breen and the Combine in an evil, savage and oppressive light.
@@gamepad3173 Retail still does it too, imo better its more subtle. Earth is drained the combine don't make elaborate buildings they just leach resources. They do so because they don't care, we can look at the suitcase's, the atmosphere of just how lonely the world of HL2 is how evil the combine are. The beta combine where too elaborate imo, the retail version shows us an alien force that was so strong it took out the earth in 7 hours, only to leave some things to drain natural resources and a small guardy duty force.
He shot a barrel and it moved! How awesome could it be?
Bruh, I can tell why they cancelled it. The video is super low quality (there is even a massive glitch at 0:32) and it would be better to have somebody playing it live rather than a compilation of clips.
Oh man everything looked so different back then D:
Source looks really good for 2002.
Legend
I like how no one is talking about this big blue tentacle piercing through a combine
That's the hydra, a cut monster.
@@videotape2959
Well, Hydra is the formal successor to Tentacle's origin.
Hope we get to see a full version of Missing Information soon. And that they include the Hydra!
im proud that we got what we got.
I can see they reused the bobs from the original HL1 release, also the music from this is an unused track from opposing force which is why it sounds a bit familiar
Half Life 2 is the best fps game ever made.
Maybe this year... just maybe...
Well we technically have hl3
There is not a single thing in this trailer that remains in the final version of the game.

I am from 2023 and still waiting for the third edition. I hope to open it before I die.
even reading it gave me goose bumps
I can't believe this game came out in 2002 i also can't believe that team fortresses 2 came out in 2007 that was the year i was born both of those games are pretty old but have really good quality valve knew what they were doing
back when trailers had gameplay
I guess this is one of the only glimpses we get of how they originally wanted Half-Life 2 to feel like..
I remember this trailer! Oh, the nostalgia.
2015 graphics in 2002.
RIP, beta combine at the end...
look at the 00:47... That's some beautiful sky and lightning!

I love this song in the video
I like how they remixed Opposing Force OST

here after half-life alyx trailer
And noticing that the trailer almost resembles hl2 e3 beta
The Trailer utilises E3 2002 maps.

@YourMomBakesPies The reason it was cut was because it was actually a terrible NPC to fight.
It's incredible how Valve managed to make a game like that in 2002, GTA vice city came out that year and it's nothing compared with this
The music and overall feel gives off the same vibes as the original half life even more than the reial!

If only that hacker didn't hack the code and leak the game. I still love retail HL2 but seeing this...wow...it's really something.
I just realized that the Combine OverWiki posted this.
dude how i wish we could still experience the beta but as if it were released by valve 😭

You could even say that the hack made Valve realize that various things in the game where too fucked up and they had to cut them. Its just my opinion.
