    A 3D model of the Imperial Walker (AT-AT) seen in The Empire Strikes Back. Modelled and animated in 3D Studio Max. Imperial Walker walks for 10 mins+ several events. I made everything but the Snow Speeder and obviously the Star Wars sound effects, which were sampled from Empire Strikes Back and some sounds from SW BF.

    Impressive. Most impressive. I really love how you replicate all the complex details of the walk.Thank to your amazing work and awesome study I just saw the first time that there are moving shock absorbers at the top of the feet.
    One day a toy should be able to walk this way... I would be the first to get one. :-)

      Thanks for the comment. I seen one video of a spanish guy who rigged up a model of the AT-AT with motors so it actually walks properly except for the shock absorb pads and pistons. The original stop-motion models were fully actuated so when you moved a leg the pistons would automatically move as well. I'd love to see an accurate toy/model motorised but I'm afraid it would be quite costly.

      so nice to read your comment. You must have so much knowledge about this thing to be able to create this nice animation. Fantastic.
      I saw the little motorized model with the hypnotizing movements made by youtubemeber "AdrianoATAT", too. I thought about making a similar thing by using an arduino and a servo for every single joint but this is a big challenge to me. I wondered how AdrianoATAT managed this already ten years ago (probably without any arduino) and using this very small device... Now I see the 3d-printed AT-AT made by "P Lh" ("3D Printed Walking AT-AT remixed video 2"): he uses just the gravity and genius/ sophisticated but quite simple moving mechanic (the big amount of gears is just to save some motors and controls). So to cut a long story short: I think it is possible to make a walking model without making it too expensive... next project in my head... nooooooooooooo.... ;-)

    A machine like this is largely impractical as it is. the only guns and lights on the thing are pointed forward and the head can only turn about 45 degrees to either side. it is incredibly vulnerable from every other angle, especially from infantry and fast moving aircraft like speeders. Those big flat sides may be impenetrable to blaster fire, but there's nothing stopping someone from tying the legs up or boarding it from below with grappling hooks. The only real protection these things have besides their armor would be any escorts they may have moving beside or behind them. why don't they have, like, small anti-air or anti-infantry guns on the flanks or rear? it's not like there's no room. Then it would be like a walking battleship and practically unstoppable.

    • @xbaxdark
      @xbaxdark  7 лет назад +56

      I've often wondered the exact same things, I actually made a 'modded' design that addresses these issues. The square turrets you see on the surface of the death star, I mounted four of those on top, on each corner of the largest square section, this would cover the walker from any fly-by's. I also mount two turrets on the bottom in the middle between the legs and drive motor, this covers any would be Luke Skywalkers from sabotaging from underneath. I also figured the slits that you see along the sides of the walker could be like medieval arrow slits but for anti-air calibre laser cannons. I tried a number of solutions of added guns or turrets to the sides but nothing really looks like it belongs. I think that's why they didn't have the thing bristling with weapons to begin with, to give it a more simple, iconic look. I think they just wanted it to be the space version of war elephants and having them with only guns on the heads makes that comparison clearer. Also there's the question of how these things were deployed and how did they load and unload storm troopers. I showed one method of deployment that I found in the EU. Apparently troops were mainly deployed by a winch system but they also supposedly had 5x snow speeders in the back with no way of unloading them. Another thing is these things are supposed to be flanked by AT-ST's which are supposed to keep them safe from closer ground assault and fly-by's. You say the head could move 45 degrees? According to my model, it can really only move a maximum of 35 degrees. I believe though that the cable used in ESB to trip them wouldn't be thick enough to prevent the walkers from snapping the line with their powerful legs. There are really so many practical problems with the entire battle of hoth sequence that don't really make a whole lot of sense, I know because I've watched it about a million times and studied the life out of it, but I think that's Star Wars in general, so long as you don't look too close, it's amazing.

      Well an At-At is usually deployed with a 2 At-St accompaniment. At-Ats are the heavy artillery, while the At-Sts are the infantry deterrent.

    Yes I will always enjoy AT-ATs and even The New AT-M6. Yes I am aware bigger isn't always better. But i like the Idea of stomping obstacles with easy like a 20 to 30 foot high wall might stop a traditional tank or a smaller walker. Where the AT-AT is like your walls are no match for me lol. Also When employed by brilliant commanders like General Veers AT-ATs are more than capable of leaving a path of destruction and doom in their wake. Now Given he did have some losses but at least spread his walkers out to provide mutual support from air speeders and his was destroyed by dirty kamikaze rebel speeder rebel scumb lol. Also the although the AT-M6 may look silly to some because its almost twice the size of a normal AT-AT. Although it even shares some of the same weaknesses it addresses problems to like being more stable for the massive gun that also prevents it from being tripped.It may also have the same exposed neck spot I think with just being bigger and more armoured in general the weak points would be stronger than the regular AT-AT not saying they aren't vulnerable or immune with similar weak points I just think It could take a hell of lot more punishment then the Standard AT-AT. And see both types together really make for powerful force along with the smaller AT-STs.They aren't every day assault vehicles for the empire or first order. But when they are needed for specific ground assault mission like in the Battle of Hoth that where their usefulness shines. I like to think of AT-ATS and AT-M6s as the walkers the empire and first order send in when you have really pissed them off and they are out for blood and as the rebels to have to be prepared to to evacuate or hold the dam line with everything you got and usually the rebellion choices the former as they don't have firepower or man power for long bloody extensive fights. Which such heavy assaults mechs are designed while having support as well. You may laugh at them all you want but if you were a rebel who saw his friend flattened by one these behemoths I think you would be running for the hills lol cause I know I would.

    AT-AT's have a top speed of 37mph, or 60kmh. How the hell are they supposed to go that fast?

    • @xbaxdark
      @xbaxdark  3 года назад +3

      That's just expanded universe bs, expanded SWU loves to over explain and hype things up. It's been determined through careful analysis that the top speed of an AT-AT would actually be around 5km/hr, which is like casual jogging speed for the average human. I think the idea (that gave them practicality) was that the snow on Hoth was deep and difficult to traverse and AT-AT's being very hardy did not require the (BS plot device) retrofitting for the extreme cold like other vehicles such as the A-Wing. This is also the same (bs plot device) excuse used for why Tie fighters were not present in the battle of Hoth. Keep in mind in reality an AT-AT would be very prone to tipping side to side and most likely collapse under it's own weight. The primary joints in legs/hips/knees would most likely snap under the weight as well. I suppose we can always imagine them being made of some super strong, light weight space metal that makes it possible. At the end of the day these things were designed to look cool on screen first and foremost and look functional second. If we assume the foot pads have significant weight to them, they make it believable that they could potentially 'anchor' it to the ground and prevent tipping.

    Hello xbaxdark. Would you please explain how the hell you rigged the leg? I tried for years now but can't figure out how to achieve it. My Setup is made out of two joint chains but i can't get the damn shock absorbers working. I mean the foot interacts with the floor and from then the absorber should go into the foot. No idea how to do it without faking it?

    • @xbaxdark
      @xbaxdark  6 лет назад

      If you have the main leg rig working right then good on you, that was the hardest part for me to figure out. For the shock absorb animation I actually had two methods. The first method I tried was linking the animation of the shock pads to a slider, so I could easily animate it again and again using the slider. Ultimately I felt this was too much work as well, what I ended up doing was using 3ds max's reaction manager to make it so the shock pads would automatically compress when the hit the floor. RUclips or google search 3ds max reaction manager and I'm sure you can figure it out. If I remember correctly I did something along the lines of restricting vertical axis movement so it could not go below the floor and then making it so the shock absorb goes down at a slower rate and stops sooner than the rest of the foot. So the foot portion can stop at 0, but the shock absorb is constrained to stop at 5 or what ever the height value I ended up setting it to. Hope that helps.

    • @xbaxdark
      @xbaxdark  7 лет назад +2

      They can turn, albeit only a small amount at a time. I wouldn't even say they have a turn radius it would be more of a gradual arc. There is a scene in ESB where one AT-AT shows uncharacteristic versatility as it side steps and shoots a snow speeder out of the air. Having modelled the walker I can say the design doesn't look as though it would support that type of motion but the stop-go-motion models clearly were articulated to perform such actions.....draw your own conclusions. Myself I think the design for these things in practicality is pretty dumb, but regardless they look awesome.

      Thanks for the comment, this video is really just a glorified walk cycle video. My thinking behind the time lapse days/nights passing by was sort of a joke, it's to imply that the AT-AT's are so slow that after being deployed it actually took them days to reach the rebel base. Also you'll notice that I use the time lapse period to apply a 'patina' effect by slowly fading the texture map in. I'd like to do more videos with the walker in the future but I've just been really busy lately.

    • @xbaxdark
      @xbaxdark  3 года назад +1

      Although Star Wars sources cite the top speed being around 65km/hr, it's total bs. The actual top speed is like 5km/hr. If you look it up on youtube a guy made a video that covers it in detail using my model to demonstrate. You can see from my sketchfab version that even at x2 speed it already begins to look unrealistic skfb.ly/PJXn . The idea from the original designers was that these walkers would be like slow lumbering mechanical beasts.

      I’m almost certain that making a real-life AT-AT, or at least a reasonable facsimile- maybe not as well armed or armored, but to scale, basically functional and possibly even more nimble and articulate, is not only possible, but would be vastly less expensive, more accessible, easier to achieve, and way more productive than *any* of the space programs being privately funded by the likes of such selfish, narrow-minded, petty dumbasses as that Tesla guy, the Amazon guy or the Virgin guy. Fuck those chumps *and* their failure to be space race. Give us an AT-AT or two, double the wages of your employees! That would make them actually cool and do the world a lot more good!

      If you read the description I did state it was modelled and animated in 3DS Max. I actually I did a few camera match sequences with it already if you check my other AT-AT videos where I composite the walker in to filmed footage. I use adobe premier to edit the footage together and a few different camera matching programs.

      To be perfectly honest I'm not sure how to respond to this, I'm not a professional (as much as I would like to be one) I still have lots to learn. That said it took me about 2 months researching animation and rigging and trying many different set ups before I finally figured out how I could get them to walk properly like in the movie. The ankle joint ring thing is what made it particularly complicated. I spent about a month of my spare time modelling and researching the AT-AT and about a week or two texture mapping it. The entire project spanned over about 3 months of my spare time. The footage produced took many days to render with 2-3 pc's all rendering at once. So yeah, it's all very time consuming especially when your learning as you go. Also I actually improved on the walker cycle for my sketchfab upload here: skfb.ly/PJXn

    • @troyandrade435
      @troyandrade435 3 года назад

      I don't think so. If it fell sideway like when a dog sleeps, i dont think it would because the legs can't bend like that. If it fell straight down like it was crouching, it might be able to push itself up, assuming it was strong enough to push up that weight. But most tines I would assume that a dropship would come to help it.

    They will actually build a fully functional atat to use instead of tanks in the future. Mark my words

    • @xbaxdark
      @xbaxdark  4 года назад +1

      It might work decent if it's no bigger than a dog but standing at 50 meters high it would collapse under it's own weight. Also due to the design it has a limited range of movement, it can only lift its feet so high off the ground before the legs collide with the main body, therefore it can only go up or down on a maximum incline/decline of 20 degrees, not to mention the massive power it would require to lift and move those huge legs.

    • @neil3442

      Yeah, it’s only real strength is armor, but that’s only on the sides.

    • @xbaxdark
      @xbaxdark  4 года назад

      @@neil3442 Well if it's any measure, they are shown taking heavy blaster fire (from rebel cannons) in the legs and cockpit area with no real effect. I suspect if lasers aren't doing the job, realistically you could resort to artillery fire or rpgs for explosive impact. Of course in star wars, it's made of some special, super strong but super light alloy so who can really say.

    • @xbaxdark
      @xbaxdark  4 года назад

      To be honest I'm not really a big fan of the variants of the AT-AT. Animating the walk cycle wouldn't necessarily be the difficult or the time consuming part, it would be making the model of the AT-M6 and rigging it for animation. I keep busy so there isn't much time for me to take on something like this currently but who knows what the future will hold.

    How did they even lift up the walkers?

    • @xbaxdark
      @xbaxdark  6 лет назад

      It's never really been addressed in canon but in EU it's said they are deployed using 'titan' carriers which can deploy up to 4 ATAT's, a number of ATST's as well as speeders. Obviously this is science fiction and none of this is really possible, if a machine was made that large with this design, it would likely topple over on it's first step. Also it's top speed wouldn't be much faster than a human's brisk walk or slow jog. I kind of based my deployment method on what I'd gathered about the Titan's, in the video the walker is dropped using a large set of mechanical tongs.

      Well the 'tractor beams' on Star Destroyers are said to be provided by "Gravity Wells" which are the two dome like structures towards the back end of the Destroyers. Not sure their capacity, but in instances like this I can't help but feel like an artist designed the vehicle to look cool or be aesthetic and then some fiction writer comes in at a later date and just assigns 'functions' to various parts.
