How is one smart thermostat going to be so much better than another to save a lot of money unless one just doesn't work...this makes no sense to me.

The saving money part has nothing to do with the thermostat, it’s all from the Daikin system and how it works. It runs off DC, VERY efficiently. Completely different than the conventional design.
