It is a pretty nice looking hood! I would Highly recommend installing the flip front I absolutely love this shield set-up!!! bought mine during the sale too!
I’ve replaced my inside lens retainer 3 times. Then I bought a nylon plastic one have been using it for 2+ years with no issues. If you google sellstrom lens retainer and click the Shapeways link you can get it there.
An autodark. These are more of a pain in the ass for beginner's. I've been welding for a couple years and rather use a professional autodark like Jackson or 3M. These kind of hoods are more for looks.
Go on amazon and buy the hobart style flip front. There are like 3 different brands that use the same template so whichever one works but they are about $14. I have to wear a hard hat and searched for the lightest flip front I would find and this was it. Had to modify the headgear for hardhat but if you don't have to wear one your good to go. I have a pipeliner and a custom outlaw hood and still prefer the cheap hobart over those two. If you absolutely need a auto darkening there are a ton of options for 2x4 ADF out there. Personally the singles HD, ameriarc and truearc are the top 3 on the market but a gold glass lens will always outperform a plastic ADF lens when it comes to clarity. You will almost certainly transition to glass if this is going to be a career so might as well start with it now. But many people still prefer ADF lenses so maybe that last sentence is wrong to say.
a question I am from Peru I love what echoes with the welding mask ... I would like to know if you could tell me which model letter is the one that you modified or if you put the leather yourself ??? and if that is the home, you could make a video of how that mask is built with leather, I hope your answer thanks .
Hey JT do you ever see double weld puddles well using a SellStrom as I just bought one but wanted to get some answers before using it, also what shade lense do you use for Tig , keep up the videos man
GimpGunfighter double puddle will happen depending on what clear lenses you use. The flip front it’s self won’t cause it. I use a solid shade 11 when tig welding.
@@JTwelder. And do you know anybody who tig welds with a AD lense and If so who makes it because I start welding school next month and want to have all this ready before school
I found when I put the sellstrom flip on my pipeliner the balance was wrong, I purchased a Carbon fiber hood with a flip and its so much better the balance and weight are just right. I put an auto darkening lens in my pipeliner (without flip) and it works good
Buying the leather, hardware and cheap flip front shield you could make one a fraction of the 150 dollar price of this thing. You already did half the work
Erik sanchez hood didn’t bow out at all but the shellstrom flip adds a lot of weight. That’s the downside to it is only one brand makes one and it’s bulky and heavy
I just made mine and mine bowed out a little, I think it's just cause my pipeliner was on sale and was made a little narrower. Also installed Jackson headgear. Helmet is pretty dope but pretty heavy with the Sellstrom flip and the added headgear.
I have the same setup and I put the Jackson headgear also I love it but with the outlaw leather and sellstorm flip it is heavy and it is a little wider than a stock pipeliner
JTwelder do you think it shrunk because you were running a lot of flux core with all that heat? I’m more of a plant/process welder and I want this same set up, I just want it to hold up though.
Noah Gullion in Canada when ever using a grind you have to have safety glasses and a face shield so if you have a flip front you can just flip it up and grind. It’s also super handy in tight spaces which is another reason people use them.
I find that having a flip style and a non auto darkening lens it takes away the risk of flash burn if ur auto darkening shorts out from sweat or mouisture plus u dont have to switch to a grinding hood or frkm gtind to weld in ceryain helmets
The sellstrom flip is way too damn heavy. Love the idea of a pipeliner with a flip but it only made things worse for me. I absolutely love the tigerhood flip so maybe I will cut it out of my old tiger and try it on my pipeliner. The outlaw tiger is great but the leather is a little too stiff for my tastes. I wish fibre would just come out with a pipeliner with their tiger flip installed. I guarantee that would become their most popular seller.
Henry Pendley I’m burning flux core right now and I run 10’ and longer beads on a horizontal so it gets really hot and the auto tint lenses over heat. As soon as I’m back to stick welding I’m switching back to a auto darkening lens
A Man a Dog and a Van: I was at a smelter plant and they were crazy strict with everything but since it looks like it’s a factory shield (outlaw does a amazing job of that) they didn’t even notice it or ever even ask!
Got the same pipeliner when they were on sale i was thinking about doing the same thing. Looks slick man!

Nice one. Do you have more videos of you using this hood?
Great job! I'm looking at doing the same thing to my hood

If you left the retainer humps inside the hood would it not have helped with the outside radius being flush?
Frank if you leave them the backing plate won’t fit so no it wouldn’t keep it flush and you won’t be able to assemble it.
How do put your lens in flip front mine keeps slipping
Follow up vid/review please. I have the same hood and not sure if I wanna install the sellstrom.
What helmet do you recommend a newbie use?
probably the fibre metal tiger hood

u should do a video about how to do lens replacement with the sellstrom flipfront
moonpigeon it’s so easy and self explanatory that I don’t think a video is necessary. It comes with instructions when you buy one also.
Hi. Could you please tell the measurement of the leather pieces , i need to drawing my cutting edges on the leather piece. Thanks
Have you seen the new weld tube hood, I want to make one like that, it's cheaper

Nice hood👍🏼
You can buy them with the flip front
much much cheaper for me to install it myself as I have to pay import fees because Im Canadian on the overall price from Texas.
I have to ask man. I saw your stickers. Are you part of the Boilermakers union.
yep Im a 3rd year apprentice in local 128

They sell these with the flip front already
