Cover the leather with sensitive skin foamy shaving cream, as much as you would use on your face. Hang it from the leather with some alligator clips and re lather it with foamy every couple hours or as often as possible (I had the same thing happen, fixed it proper.) Cheers
Pretty much. The thing is useless to me if it cant stand up to flux core. It paid for its self though lol in the 3 weeks I used it I took home about 10k.
I have ran lots of flux core. 5/64 wire. It does get very hot. I have actually a time or two melted the the tip and nozzle off the welder. It was dual shield flux core so as soon as the nozzle melts you lose the C02 shielding gas and get porosity in the weld. Fun times
Overall I ditched all my pipeliners completely and I am now using my cheap $12 plastics hoods only. They are lighter, more compact, cheaper, have a better flip front, flexible, and have a better system to swap out lenses so they beat the Sellstrom on a pipeliner in every category that matters to me.
Ive been using the tigerhood version of this hood in the shipyard all winter. Gotta condition that leather ,boss. Also, i see your a union boilermaker. Good for you. P.s. i work in Wisconsin.
I’ve got a similar setup working in a shop core welding service truck bodies. You just gotta keep some leather paste in your tool box and wipe it down and hydrate it every once in a while. I also have a carbon fiber hood base instead of a fiber hood and it weighs almost nothing. Also standard clear grinding interior lenses are 3 times as thick and rated for a grinding disc exploding unlike the thin ones only used to keep bbs off your lenses.
Personally I replaced the bib with cow hide leather and custom cut myself from an old leather apron. Cow hide leather stays soft and I lay it on top of the leather as well.
I heard you can put electrical tape around the flip up where the lights get in. When mine warped I just put electrical tape around it and now the light doesn't get in at all. But I would rather get a new one
I’ve had one for about 5 months. I contacted outlaw about the leather drying out. They recommend using leather conditioners 1-2 times per week depending on your usage and welding process.

thanks for sharing your opinion! Not sure if you've tried this but You may be able to reset the leather by soaking it (as needed) with water. Then as it slowly air dries, hang the hood in a proper stance, re-position the leather, and apply a bit of leather protection so the hide doesn't crack when completely dry. I've had success re-shaping leather that way :)
I saw those hoods on Facebook being advertised but already had a pipeliner in perfectly good shape. So since I can't leave anything alone... I decided to use an old leather welding sleeve I had and cut out a piece just for the top of the pipeliner... I was worried that the bottom leather wouldn't hold up and it looks like I thought right... Boy that really stinks. I would recommend a half chopped setup with just the top cut like I have. Super lightweight and still durable on the bottom
Yeah man you were right! I no longer use pipeliners because of the weight and the flip front situation but I will be modifying one of my new shields with some cheap leather like you did.

Keep it conditioned with mink oil (maybe once a week). Occasionally or as needed, clean the leather with saddle soap. Another tip to keep your bottom leather from curling up is, stop setting the hood down so that it pushed the leather up. Dude I’ve had my outlaw for well over a year. You never set it down like that. I’ve melted a flip up and my leather is still the same shape it was when I bought it.
I had the fiber metal quick connect hard hat adapters on shield so there was no way to hang it up. Had no choice but to set it down. If they used a lower more flexible grade of leather for the bottom it wouldn’t have been a problem but since they use the higher grade stiffer leather it warps. Bottom line is back the outlaw was mostly making their shields for looks and not performance. So many people had this problem with the leather warping that outlaw had to offer a warranty program where they will replace or restore the bottom leather if you ship in your shield.
So if you want to not scrape the weld lens when putting the clear lens in put two clear lenses on the front of the weld lens then your not scratching it. And also it’ll keep it from not moving as much.
Hey JTwelder, I am a member of the Boiler Makers local 128. I Just finushed my last term of school for pressure system welder. This is a great video because i was looking at these shields for a while wanting one cause of all the same reasons you stated. But i didnt want to spend the $$ on it. So i just altered that cheap $15 flip front you have. To be similar to the outlaw leather. Leather on the top shield and neck bib protection. I had a similar thing happen. I was working up in Sault ste. marie on a tank job and it was pretty cold. needless to say the leather warped pretty good where the neck protection was and defeated the purpose of the shield. I am not a fan of those tiger hoods to big and bulky and always falling down in front of your face. 1. So what i did was i bought a similar flip front to that one in the video(cheaper flip front). But the hinges for the flip front on this one were plastic and you can take them out easily(sweetness). I removed one of the springs so you can flip the flip front down with a simple nod. (Right on!) similar to this video. 2. Then cut the top off. Plastic part on the top of the shield and riveted leather similar to what the top of the outlaw leather looks like. That part was always pretty good. So it can fit the contour of the hard hat and when your welding 7010 it stops you from wearing the sparks on the money maker lol. 3. I bought a Lincoln Viking shield a while back because well I was a newb. They are more for a shop setting. You dont use them on site cause they will get jacked or broken. But the useful thing about that is it came with a hard hat adapter. It is the best hard hat adapter i have used to date. So I attached that hard hat adapter to the flip front and Bam!!! Works good. You can buy those hard hat adapters seperetely. I recommend trying something similar Bro. Also another point you made in the video. I definetely recommend you to get the flip front pocket hood from outlaw leather. we were doing return bends in school and my buddy was using one and he said he fogged up a little bit. But it was great for the tight spots. So I got one to haha to be honest havn't used it yet but i am sure it will come in handy. Gets rid of all the back light as well, fits like a pancake hood. Anyways cheers man thanks for your content and the pros and cons of the shield. Who knows might work with you on a job some day haha.
Whenever u take off the clear lense, u have to remove the little plastic cover in the back and then they will all slide off easily. And when installing new lense put them inside and then add the plastic thing back together 👌🏾👍
You are thinking of the Tiger hood flip thats the wrong shield bud. This is a Shellstrom flip and they have a steel retainer not plastic and it also can only be slid out the side slot not popped out the back and to even remove it all the lenses have to be pulled out and also it can only be installed before lenses.
Or just don't set the helmet down where it bends the leather like that, instead hang it or do what you said the mask became useless because he was ignorant or arrogant, not the hood's fault. Also, if he wanted to be warmer then don't buy a drafty helmet and get a more insulated one lol
Go back and watch the ENTIRE video. There's a list of reasons why I don't use it, the leather is just one of those reasons. Later in the video I show the shield that I currently use, it requires absolutely no maintenance and is overall much better!
i took the princess auto hood you got there, went to a leather shop, grabbed a chunk of thinner leather than the outlaw leather style (non polished i think is the term) drilled a couple holes and cut the lower half off the helmet. works perfect for tight spaces, light, durable, and after putting in a nice fixed shade shade 11 lens came out to 60 bucks canadian. i weld fire surpression pipe in a fab shop in ottawa
Yeah man thats the way to go! We make them all the time when in a pinch in the boilers with those shields. We use pieces from cheap welding jackets for the leather and just zip cut the shield and drill the holes with a pencil grinder then zip tie it all together lol its pretty crude the way we do it but it works in a pinch. Im sure if you put some time and money into it you would have something very nice like you built.
Find a old helmet as a shape to form leather on and damp the leather and use a damp tea towel and iron the leather back to shape hope it helps and use needs foot oil to get lots of moisture back into the leather
I agree. I bought the same one. Love the hood but it did not work for my application. I’m a union pipefitter, anytime I have to squeeze in a tight spot, that leather is constantly getting in the way and then you end up heating the leather up so much it shrinks just like yours did offering no protection. GREAT when you get some nice bench welds to do all day but when do you ever get those..
I made my own with the black tiger hood and used leather from a bib off one of those aprons they sell. Knock on wood havent had any issues UA lu 434 stay strong brothers 💪
The leather is SUPER easy to replace. Order some leather on etsy, and buy some Chicago style fasteners for leather off amazon. The fasteners screw together, and are easily replaceable. I ordered high quality ostritch leather off etsy, and made my own helmet, WAY nicer than that outlaw. Lmao but i love leather work, i made a full leather hoodie with built in gauntlet 5mm thick. I stitched it together with Kevlar thread. All the boys at work try to get me to make one for them.
@@joeybunch9695 I looked at images online at the general dimensions, then drew it on some of that stencil poster paper. Just draw half of the image, and then fold the paper in half when cutting so both sides are perfectly even
Yeah I saw that on the website when I bought the hood but It's about $70 cad for me to buy and ship a replacement bib for this hood. It would take two weeks to ship so no way I'm doing that. I found a much better set up for a good now that cost a fraction of the price of the outlaw.
Treat the leather with Obenauf's HD LP Paste. It's designed for wildland firefighter's boots but works great for welding leather due to it's resistance to heat and incredible leather protection. It'll also help restore that leather back to a useable state.
Even if the leather was perfect the shield is still to heavy. I now use a shield that's ultra light and doesn't require any maintenance other than changing the clear lenses.
Fill your kitchen sink with some hot/warm water. Dunk the leather portion into the water. It should soften up after a bit. Stretch and Reshape the leather.. Let it dry good. Condition with oil. Just regular vegetable cooking oil will work.
Try wet forming the leather over a pipe the same diameter.. The you can harden the leather with a propane torch.. Trust me I'm a Welder/Tin Basher and a Leather Worker..
A Man a Dog and a Van I could do that but would want the leather to still be very flexible so that the shield could fit in many tight spots that other shields wouldn’t. Now if I welded on pipe or the pipeline I would 100% do that I love that idea for that application! Leather working sounds pretty interesting I would love to get into that as a hobby.
@@JTwelder. I got into Leatherworking was a result of my two trades.. I kept ruining my pants in Sheet Metal so I fabbed up an apron. The rest was history. I am thinking of making a welding jacket and neck protector. It will give you Killer Layout and Mad Pattern Skills..

Just buy the fibre metal Futura that already has a flip front on it and it's better then a tiger hood in my opinion. I'm not a huge fan of the selstrom flip front. Or a jackson wh10 with the flip front but the jackson hard hat adapters suck but they have awesome soft band. I'm also a boilermaker. Local 13💪
Michael Reyes yeah man glad I could help! I see them used all the time on weldtube because their a sponsor but those guys weld in a shop so theirs never get abused.

AnotherDumbWelder yeah that’s something I didn’t mention because when I used it I wasn’t in close quarters but I’m sure when you right near another welder it doesn’t provide much side protection.
JTwelder for me it was actually light coming in around the bottom and side, it honestly must just be me. Have one that I chopped differently and made the bib longer and wider and it works great 👍🏼
You have to take care of of the leather. You running flux core the arc flash is drying the leather out. I wash the leather with soap and water. Then drape it on a round surface so it will dry with shape. Once it’s dry, condition the leather with mink oil.
Brandon Cornett won’t be using a fiber metal hood period. I found the $12 black plastic flip front Shields out perform the pipeliner and tiger in every aspect so I’m only running them now.

This is a Shellstrom flip and they have a steel retainer not plastic and it also can only be slid out the side slot not popped out the back and to even remove it all the lenses have to be pulled out and also it can only be installed before lenses.
It helps when setting these Hoods down, to flip the Leather inside of the hood, it’ll keep the leather uniform longer.
Or just don't set the helmet down where it bends the leather like that, instead hang it or do what you said the mask became useless because he was ignorant or arrogant, not the hood's fault. Also, if he wanted to be warmer then don't buy a drafty helmet and get a more insulated one lol
I’ve had mine for 4 months, and it’s still in great shape. Take care of your shit and it will take care of you.
Go back and watch the ENTIRE video. There's a list of reasons why I don't use it, the leather is just one of those reasons. Later in the video I show the shield that I currently use, it requires absolutely no maintenance and is overall much better!
Take a steamer to the leather and the leather will straighten out to original form when manually moved. Cool it and boom. Fixed.
i took the princess auto hood you got there, went to a leather shop, grabbed a chunk of thinner leather than the outlaw leather style (non polished i think is the term) drilled a couple holes and cut the lower half off the helmet. works perfect for tight spaces, light, durable, and after putting in a nice fixed shade shade 11 lens came out to 60 bucks canadian. i weld fire surpression pipe in a fab shop in ottawa
Saddle soap to moisten. Then a good boot oil to maintain. Easy to fix that leather.
I took the leather off a old welding jacket for neck protection it stays flexible USA union boilermaker here
You can change the leather
Find a old helmet as a shape to form leather on and damp the leather and use a damp tea towel and iron the leather back to shape hope it helps and use needs foot oil to get lots of moisture back into the leather
The grinding lens is thicker because it safety rated the other ones are to protect the lens
fibre metals clear lenses are safety rated and there half the thickness of the shellstrom protective one so I still think its a flaw.
The extra thick clear lens might be for room to add a cheater lens. Maybe, idk.
I agree. I bought the same one. Love the hood but it did not work for my application. I’m a union pipefitter, anytime I have to squeeze in a tight spot, that leather is constantly getting in the way and then you end up heating the leather up so much it shrinks just like yours did offering no protection. GREAT when you get some nice bench welds to do all day but when do you ever get those..
zach elias I’m union boilermaker and yeah man it’s just not practical for us.
JTwelder super nice hood’s though! Not trying to bash on them at all. What local are you out of brother? I’m out of local 42 Norwalk Ohio
@@zachelias175Im out of boilermakers local 128 Ontario Canada
I made my own with the black tiger hood and used leather from a bib off one of those aprons they sell. Knock on wood havent had any issues UA lu 434 stay strong brothers 💪
justin howard tiger hood is a better option I think since it’s light. Good idea making your own with different leather probably works pretty good!
All the boys at work try to get me to make one for them.
could you give me a link to the leather you bought? and maybe some dimensions
Do you have any type of template for it or did you just roll with it
@@joeybunch9695 I looked at images online at the general dimensions, then drew it on some of that stencil poster paper. Just draw half of the image, and then fold the paper in half when cutting so both sides are perfectly even
you can buy the leather bits from them btw
Yeah I saw that on the website when I bought the hood but It's about $70 cad for me to buy and ship a replacement bib for this hood. It would take two weeks to ship so no way I'm doing that. I found a much better set up for a good now that cost a fraction of the price of the outlaw.
If you hate it so much and not going to use it I will take it
It looks like the leather dried out. Something you could try and do is use a leather treatment like obenaufs to get moisture back into the leather.
Pipeliners cloud makes a carbon fiber chopped hood with leather that never gets hard and bent
I have the same hood with flipfront same bad choice i made it hate hahah heavy as helland my lenses will fall out from time to time
Robert Rodriguez yeah seams like it’s super common
Treat the leather with Obenauf's HD LP Paste. It's designed for wildland firefighter's boots but works great for welding leather due to it's resistance to heat and incredible leather protection. It'll also help restore that leather back to a useable state.
Even if the leather was perfect the shield is still to heavy. I now use a shield that's ultra light and doesn't require any maintenance other than changing the clear lenses.
Glad I saw this. Thank you for the review
Fill your kitchen sink with some hot/warm water. Dunk the leather portion into the water. It should soften up after a bit. Stretch and Reshape the leather.. Let it dry good. Condition with oil. Just regular vegetable cooking oil will work.
You could get a steamer & use it to fix the leathers shape I did it on mine 👍🏼
A Man a Dog and a Van I’ll have to get into that!
Gotta love the boilermaker stickers
the cold has no issue on the leather, I am in Florida and my hoods leather did the same thing in a shop that is 80 degrees F.....
Man so it’s just happening to everyone!
@@JTwelder. yep....cheers from Florida, Paul
I have an outal tigerhood not the pipeliner it come with the flip fron already and the leather is thiner so a bit more flimsy, and i got a lot of buddies that got that thicker leather and it hardens pretty quick, almost a year since ive had mine and its still flimsy, for sure will get another one of that leather
Warm the leather back up with a blow torch lol maybe it will work mayb not. Id take the lense off befor trying it ou
Nice another brother from local 128, Dan Levis here. Take one spring out of your flip front. Or any shield for that matter! Works like a champ. I do a LOT of tig in Sarnia hopefully I dont fuck mine up like yours! Thanks for your review!
just geta tigerhood leave the pipliner for pipe welders. cool seeing a brother making content. I'm local 83
I run a cheap Chinese hood now
Wash with saddle soap, then rub mink oil into the leather. The cold didn't make it stiff like that. I'll buy it from you if you don't want to take care of the leather.
Bro i hate them outlaw hood all the uv light goes in my eyes
wuts up boilermaker thanks for the review, stay warm up there! lol see you on the tubes brotha! boilermaker local 627 phoenix AZ
I think those are for looks people get em cause they look cool but there not practical at all
Carol Shawol 100% man you got it!
If you hate it so much, send that thing to me I'll use it!
JT Your video was one of the reasons I got my pipeliner. Then during school I upgraded to a Viking 2450 and I prefer my pipeliner I wish I could pull my head gear from my Viking and put in in my pipeliner that'd literally be my dream hood because of how comfortable the Viking head gear is
I work in stainless fabrication you can mount it no problem a guy at work did you just ha e to Drexel the holes out a little
nobody’s sending you free shit for complaining about how you dont know how to use their stuff but think its their fault the entire video either 😂
You can use leather conditioner (Liquid) on the back or send it to Outlaw Leather and they will refurbish the leather for you.
Do you know what what brand or specifically what conditioner? I have 3 outlaws and could probably use something on them lol
I would try to RE condition the leather and keep it oiled
I have an esab sentinel a50, and a princess auto flip front. I use the esab sentinel a50 for Tig its awesome... I never wear a hardhat tho.
Yeah having to wear a hard had sucks! I’ve never used any esab hoods but I hear their good.
Local 13💪
So glad i watched this before i got one of these
Michael Reyes yeah man glad I could help! I see them used all the time on weldtube because their a sponsor but those guys weld in a shop so theirs never get abused.
JTwelder yeah it make sense tho if that leather gets heated up it’s gonna shrink. They definitely market themselves well but I’m just gonna invest in a different helmet
Michael Reyes good idea I definitely think their hoods are nice but that type of leather gives them limited applications.
I got one and couldn’t even use it let so much light in.
Or saddle soap I forgot
Canadian welding supply my friend save yourself on import cost
Long shot, but if you don’t want that hood I’ll buy it off you. Boilermaker myself, always looking for another hood
You need to condition the leather to make it more supple. Leather is skin and needs to be moisturized.
Leather conditioner needed to maintain suppleness
hey sell me it i live in ontario ! let me know
And you would’ve been better off buying a tiger hood also guess that lens is nice but looks pretty dam heavy
Brandon Cornett won’t be using a fiber metal hood period. I found the $12 black plastic flip front Shields out perform the pipeliner and tiger in every aspect so I’m only running them now.
Get some leather conditionner, it will softer that leather.
sebast giroux yeah that’s an idea!
Put some saddle soap on that leather. It will relax.
Try oiling it with veggie oil
You can buy leather conditioner and probably bring it back to life
Yeah lots of people said that but i don't wanna have to do maintenance on my Welding shield. I use a different shield now that's lighter then the outlaw and requires no maintenance.
Yeah bro I did an Instagram post about the exact same issues! I used mine 4 hours and it’s collecting dust now
I'll take it off your hands lol
THIS is a PIPE SHIELD!!!!
It could be a everything shield if they used a different kind of leather.....
Need to wet the leather and form it back
Soooo your poor maintenance is what screwed it up?lol easily could have sat it upside down.
Regardless of the leather it's still to heavy to use every day on a hardhat
Thanks for the review (local 146)
Gotta oil the leather.
Treat the leather with Obenauf's LP paste. It's good for your boots too(the paste or oil version).
If yer lid is too heavy yer neck is too skinny.
Hey young Brother. Just got an Outlaw Leather helmet. Put a review video on. Thanks for the advice on storage. I work out of the Boilermaker 146. Check me out on Instagram: kennedy_welding
Put mink oil on the leather and you won’t have that problem
It won't fix the issue.
Michael Smith it did on my friends hood
