Assassin's Creed III is always gonna be one of my favorites, no question.
Connor is a tragic character, he lost his family, friends, tribe, land, his fater, Achilles, definitively not an easy life.
The soundtrack is very fitting and emotional, dark, and though there's no music during exploration it kinda fits this game with Connor hearing the sounds of nature (which are done well) instead.
Story is captivating and shows us his family orgins, his heritage, villians are good and the setting is beautiful, with different seasons.

With AC3 you also need to actually traverse the map to have the whole of it shown on the map screen. It does encourage exploration especially in the Frontier and homestead areas, but there’s so much of it that only the die hard completionists will want to put in the time and effort to do this for all four areas you access.

To traverse the homestead you just need to swim all the rivers and lakes, and walk all the small villages like Lexington, Concord, Monmouth and Valley Forge. • @starbirds007

The combat systems in ac3 and 4 are very different. Most people think that the only difference is that ac3 combat is more brutal or faster than ac4, but there are actually many mechanical differences aswell. In ac4 you can instantly kill after you stun an enemy, this isn't possible in ac3. In ac4, any enemy that is countered can be instantly counter killed. Many enemy types in ac3 can counter your counter kill which requires the player to actually think instead of just counter killing everyone. It also gives the incentive to counter hurt in ac3. In ac4 there is no real reason to counter hurt an enemy. In ac4, if you do not break defence of an enemy and keep attacking, the enemy will just push you, while in ac3, if you do not break defence and keep attacking, the game will punishes the player and the enemy will attack you. In ac4, any enemy can be killed during a kill streak easily, but in ac3 many enemy types can break your kill streak by countering your attack if you do not break their defense first. Ac3 also gives the player an incentive to use the counter tool kills, for example: enemies like captains and grenadiers cannot be counter killed, you have two viable options if you counter them, you can counter stun and complete a combo to kill the enemy, which takes time and it is usually not the best option in group fights, so the other option is to tool kill which instantly kills the enemy. In ac4 there is no real reason to use counter tool kill other than it looks cool, and it also takes ammo. In ac4 there is also no real reason not to just counter kill anyone. Also a few things to note: rope dart ammo is only consumed in ac3 when connor doesn't pull the rope back towards himself, so connor can use one rope dart indefinitely during combat. In ac4 even if edward pulls back the rope dart, it will still reduce ammo. There are more weapon types in ac3. Weapon stats actually matter in ac3, although you can finish both games with the default weapon set, upgrading in ac3 makes a lot of difference than ac4. There are no health upgrades in ac3 so you cannot turn yourself into a tank.
All in all, ac3 has much more well balanced and challenging combat system that makes a better use of all of its features with many enemy types, weapon types, tools for combat and kill animations.
While combat in ac4 is very poorly balanced and lacks depth.

AC4 combat is simpler than 3 because when boarding larger ships in all the chaos around it'd be so gross to make the board: just turn off all the HUD and see how you can die easily. AC3 is a melee game more even than a stealth game, obviously it needed to have a deeper combat.

    • @aninfinitemindofmusicandreams

AC3 has my favorite combat in the entire series. I may like Black Flag more overall but the combat had a noticeable downgrade in both the number of things you could do, weapons you could wield and the difficulty. I thought Black Flag was an excellent game back then and I still think it's an excellent game now but it would have been a perfect game had it kept the same combat options as 3.
On another note, AC3 was the last game I was playing on my PS3 patiently waiting for Black Flag before my console YLOD'd. Had to build a gaming PC the next year to play it, but those were good times.

To me, learning valuable lessons in a game is no different than learning something in a book or movie. It's the difference in platform/media you choose to learn something in that makes the three different. The Ezio trilogy taught players to live their lives as they want to and to believe whatever you believe is true. It also taught players to love their families and cherish them as you might not know what lies in the future.
Assassin's Creed is a collection of games built upon knowledge. Whether from historical events that occured decades ago and things that might/could happen in our near future.

AC3 hate kinda comes from Connor being a dull protagonist compared to Ezio and anyone that comes after him (until now) because he's very silent yet awkward which should've been really accurate considering he was an "outsider" for 16 years that only got to know how to socialize with people outside of his culture.
Oh and at the time this game is like unity, a buggy mess. A lot of it has been fixed but some still noticeably appeared to this day like Connor and Haytham going down of the are they're running in. Plus this game is very unoptimized compared to Blackflag (in which also presented the same issues) for PC players. The hate at the time is understandable.
      Extra:
Oh yeah, it also shares the same thing as Brotherhood's annoying completion lists, although I think there are like only 3 sequences have this, they're pretty stupid compared to Brotherhood because those 3 sequences relied on AI, while as Brotherhood does it for the sake of it "being very hard". I remembered rage quitting on Connor running through US vs Britain because I kept getting shot since the enemies will randomly shoot you even if you hid and the one where Connor rode the horse and tried to prevent George Washington burning his village again.

On release, there were bugs galore, the storyline was overly simplistic, and older gamers had no patience with the whiny protagonist. Tho recently I have been playing all of the AC games through 2021 and now in 2022
I'm now on rogue so the 2 games are both very fresh in my mind
I must say the combat in 3 is far more enjoyable on land as it felt far more varied with weapons which is fun
I love the story of 3 a lot but the pacing is a draw back for me in comparison to 4
If want to play a more assassin focused game I'll play AC3 in comparison to AC4
But in my SUBJECTIVE OPINION AC4 is far better
Tho haytham is one of my favourite characters ever

Interestingly, I find myself on the opposite side of a lot of points. Definitely agree on the soundtrack, ac3 combat >black flag combat, and the beauty of Edward’s story, though i wish he became an assassin a bit earlier. Connor’s eeks it just a bit ahead there. This ended up longer than i meant, read if you want.. or not. Regardless, this was an interesting watch.
Open world: visually and loading screen related, Black Flag. But 3 I found more interactive in traversing, navigating the trees and areas, while in 4..i kind of just would go to travel speed and only adjust when needed. Both eventually wore in me over time though.
Parkour: They felt pretty similar, though the feel of 3 was a bit better for me. The spacing could’ve been a bit better for buildings. Black flag’s was fine, though i don’t remember needing to do as much odd pathing one of roofs. Probably just me though.
Stealth: another “maybe just me,” but i kind of .. massively dislike Black Flag’s system. Dancers are really strong, and stalking zones feel far more more plentiful than proper blending areas. I like the tool variety in 3 a lot more, you have Assassin recruits that can help manipulation (cover escort is more fair since it doesn’t ignore detection, just slows it), and outside restricted zones (which will typically have plenty of stalking areas), you really aren’t motivated to be as careful since there’s no notoriety system to manage that makes guards detect you easier.
Side content: I feel like you did 3 a disservice. While 4 does have the repeatable fishing areas…you left out the peg leg/captain Kidd missions, naval missions (Though tied that into the naval point, for ac3 it is side content), frontiersman/hunting lodge missions, and liberation missions for assassin recruits, hunting, and forts.
For me with the naval.. you say 4 refunded it..i say it felt more watered down. Now for a main system, it’s fine, but i loved the weightiness of 3’s, the way every shot actually felt like it mattered beyond a damage number (chain shot op if you can hit it). Less grinding-feeling for me as well.
Story…i like portions of them both, but 3’s heavier focus on the conflict and ideologies of Templars and Assassins, and Connor’s own growth wins out by a smidge (i don’t think lee plot twist was.. that confusing?). But Black flag’s story is also good.

Agree with all your points. I’ve just finished both games in a row. Black Flag is definitely a better “game” for sure, sailing on the ocean with the crew singing is so much fun. Though I really respect AC3 for handling it’s historical controversies (American war of independence, treatment of indigenous people etc) really well, at least for a game. I’m so glad it wasn’t just “wooo America freedom guns yeahhh” like the war is sometimes portrayed in media, there wasn’t a cartoony good vs evil fight. Black Flag probably could’ve cast more of a light on the horrors committed by the colonial powers, as the game only briefly shows the native inhabitants and slavery. Thankfully Freedom Cry doesn’t shy away from the latter. I really like assassins creed for its “historical tourism” so the games being used to teach about parts of history that can be uncomfortable is really admirable to me. Obviously they’re not a replacement for a textbook but I was on Wikipedia learning about plenty of things while playing both games.

Suggestion for the next video in the series, Unity vs Revelations I think would be great. A lot of parallels yet still very different. With both of them adding quite a bit to parkour, having a prominent love interest, both different adjustments to how they use Hidden blades, and both you go to different time periods: Revelations with the keys, and the other we start there using an Abstergo game until Assassins recruit us and then in different periods through the glitches. There’s also different approaches to Assassins one with showing the council in unity and new recruitment and the other we recruit and see what they have to do to defend their Assassin dens. Also the wise Assassin in Revelations that decides to leave the brotherhood to finally get to live his life going for what he wants, and Arno is trying to redeem himself uses the brotherhood to try to accomplish that goal but ends up losing the life he wants most to be with Elise who dies at the end giving vastly different love stories with one being a tragic one. Where I think it’d be a really interesting video for comparison.

In my opinion, AC3 is a much better game than Black Flag. I remember when AC3 came out and I played it on xbox360. It was an absolute breath of fresh air compared to the Ezio trilogy, which I was already tired of. I can only describe AC3 in one word. Great adventure. The player starts in England in an atmospheric opera house. This introduction alone amazed me and totally drew me in. Then we find ourselves on board a ship in the middle of the Atlantic on our way to America. This alone sounds like the start of a great adventure. And it's not just an ordinary cut scene and boom we're in America. But again on the ship we experience another story and the atmosphere is amazing. Then when we get to America and discover everything during the change of seasons, it's epic.
And that's what I love about AC3's slow pace. It's not the destination that's important, but the journey. Something is always happening, something is always changing. Black flag was a disappointment to me when I first played it. It's a great game, but when I heard there was going to be a new pirate-themed AC game with naval battles that followed AC3, I was absolutely thrilled. But what a disappointment when AC4 came out. I expected the naval battles to be much more elaborate than in AC3 but unfortunately the opposite was true. Everything was simplified and much more arcadey. The wind direction didn't matter anymore and the battles weren't as epic as in AC3.
Since AC3 had naval battles in the form of missions, these battles were much more fleshed out and epic. At the same time, the storms were more realistic and more intense. AC4 had a beautiful and superb open world, but everything else was repetitive. The only challenge in AC4 was the legendary ships, of which there were 4 I think. and that was it. There were some amazing fights in AC3 that tested what a captain Connor is.
In terms of gameplay, AC4 was once again disappointing compared to AC3. The missions that took place on land were absolutely repetitive and over and over again. Watch, listen and kill and on and on. The author of this video highlights the number of side missions, but they were again annoying and repetitive. Just the dozen ubisoft standard that they fill their games with to extend the playing time. But AC3 side missions are diverse. There are fewer of them than in AC4, but more does not mean better.
In my opinion, AC3 has a much better, more complex and mature story than the one in AC4, which is very simple. In AC3 we see an adventurous journey, twists and turns, and a man's life from childhood, which is intertwined with the American Revolution. And Haytham Kenway is the best character in the entire series. Edward Kenway doesn't have that charisma. Overall, AC3 is more sophisticated

  • @jbcatz5

No modern day comparison? Assassin’s Creed 3 would win that category easily because it’s more of Desmond, and Desmond actually getting to do missions instead of walk about and get exposition or get Bleeding Effect symptoms. That’s not to say Black Flag’s modern day is boring, being in Abstergo Entertainment’s headquarters not as a prisoner is an interesting change and nicely parallels the Sage storyline in the Animus sequences, as well as setting up things like Juno and the Instruments of the First Will. In terms of character 3 offers more in its modern day.

You should do a tier list or ranking of the modern day sections of the games. I honestly loved both. It’s so nostalgic to watch this video. I think AC4 was my favorite because of the pirate theme.

Hot take here, ac naval combat is much more grounded and packs a punch than ac iv black flag.
I get why black flag was more arcade cause having the naval exploration and combat more slow paced in such a big open world would have been a chore.

Black flag is amazing I wish it had an online mode of just navel combat and being a pirate kinda like sea of thieves but still black flag is one of my favorites in the series

I guess I'm the only one who likes/appreciates the realistic naval system of AC3

Who is still playing ac black flag's multiplayer. I am, although on xbox the only consistent gamemode is the ring tdm mode. It was a masterpiece in it's life and is a hidden gem, Ubisoft PLEASE make a new one

If someone has only played Ac4 on a Nintendo Switch, I recommend that you try it again on Playstation, Xbox, or PC. I used to play the Nintendo Switch version and now I'm playing it again with Steamdeck, and I'm having a completely different experience with the Naval Combat. Especially, the smoke that comes out after Cannon is fired is really cool and the expression of the weather is more detailed. You can experience a much cooler naval combat

As someone who doesnt have a steamdeck but has a high end pc, Id rather play the game with less graphics portable. I play ezio collection, 3, and 4 on switch and I love it. I know that the graphics is a downgrade. Tho, im looking forward for steamdeck to release on our region to play unity and beyond.
