No hype...no drama...no bullshit, just a straight forward "this is the product and this is how to set it up and make it work" kinda video, this is why Greg is one of the better tech folks on the RUclips.
Personally, if there is already ethernet ran to multiple points of the house in the ceiling, I think it would have made a lot more sense to use access points that are mounted up there. You would get better performance since each AP would have wired connection and since the AP is blasting the signal downwards from up there. Seems like a wasted opportunity since all the hard part (running the cables through walls) had been done already.

The great thing is that you can just buy more to put in or near places where you notice a signal drop / weak signal. Really cool product and it finally fixed my wifi problem at home. And to think before that I just tried using regular plug in the wall extenders.
I like that most of the Deco units support ethernet backhaul to help out with the speeds and stability. Been looking at the X20 myself. Amazon had them on sale a few weeks ago for $200, but I held off thinking Black Friday would be a better deal. Unfortunately they are at $230 for a 3 pack now.

Amazing timing, heh. Just yesterday I installed my new Decos M4 after some more networking-savvy friends recommended it. After spending a lot of money on routers, repeaters and access points, I FINALLY have decent wifi performance across the house! Mesh Deco FTW 🙂
The 2nd hand market in my place sells them for as low as $20 per node Once I'm immersed in its eco system. I've manage to snag 12 units of them and ran a ethernet backhaul since my house is like a bunker in terms of concrete thickness 😂 So there it is lowest Ping and peak speed anywhere i go 😀
I use 2X Deco M4, in a 100m² house. I have good signal on the roof and the yard , plus enough meters away from home, I can access the internet as well. These X20 are much more expensive but for different use case scenarios. The Mesh WiFi system, really killed Powerlines, I believe :) Great video, as always, Greg!
I've been using orbi mesh wifi for over 5 years now "I think" and it's been amazing. Whenever i see a tech tuber buy a new old school router I scratch my head and I don't understand why they still buy those. I'm sure there is a good reason for it. I use one of the three in my computer room and directly plug it into my pc and get the full speed that I pay for on my pc. I can't imagine using anything else since i've made the switch to mesh wifi years ago.
Nice video. Good to see the learning curve. Nice. I wonder was it only one utp cabel that connected to the first ap from the isp. I would like to know how for example his tv was connected? i so the 2 coax cables so i'm wondering now :)
Interesting. I didn't know that you could just replace the ISPs gateway router. TP Link I have often used. But in an apartment block it is a game of ever increasing strengths to combat the neighbours, 8 other neighbours whose WiFi can be as strong as your own. So I prefer to stick to the trusty Cat 6 cable.
do these mesh devices support bridge mode? you could just plug it into one of those unused ethernet jacks and leave the cabinet as it was or put a pfsense router in there, the netgate 2100 is what I have its superb
So these will work if I connect to my router right? I'm sure I read somewhere they only work if connected to a modem not a router? Can you clear this up for me please?
Thanks for sharing your experience with the deco x20. I just purchased this set. Any thoughts or issues with the Wi-Fi since installation or are you still happy with the set? Thanks again.
OK. Some things that I noticed here. You set up the first one and it gave you 380mbps. I'm thinking you don't have gig service. You probably have 500mbps. If you had gig service and you're only getting 380, then this thing is worthless. The 2nd one you got 265mbps. The signal degraded quite a bit. That's a 30% degradation. Then the 3rd location (and you stood next to it) you got 211mbps. That's a 44% degradation. That's not great. I would expect that if you got 380m, that you would get around the high 300m for the other two. I could be wrong, but the whole purpose of the Mesh Network is having the same speed at all locations of the house. This thing is better than your stock router. But then again, I am not sure why they stuck that thing inside an enclosed box. That just adds a barrier between the antenna and your devices.
So you don't need the isp provided modem anymore and can return it not having to pay a "rental fee" anymore? Or do you still need the isp provided modem and this just replaces the router?
