Great video! I think that I keep waiting for a true Z1 successor. Though I am still super happy with the Z1 so honestly I am not really waiting at all.
Every tech company: "Let's make a few things somewhat better, and take away some things people liked. Then next time we can get people excited that we added back stuff we used to have and then they won't notice that we didn't really make anything that much better."
looks great, I'll start putting some money in the "Camera 360" piggy bank, do you think they will upgrade the camera to get the raw format? Thank you Simo
Hi Ben Once again a great video from you. Thank you very much. A question about the GPS of the new Theta X in relation to Google Street View. How exactly can you use the Theta X for street view. 1. like a Labpano Pilot by uploading the Street View video directly from the Theta to Google Maps. 2. via the Street View app 3. via the GoThru Street builder
So great to see you making new videos in your brand new home! Congratulations! Thanks for making this video. I’ve been wondering all about this camera! Great video!
can one livestream indefinately by plugin in power while shooting? I am looking at this from an event livestreaming perspective. Would this cam be able to do that?
So here I am wanting to buy my first 360 cam, and I'm stumped. Theta X ticks lots of boxes - great photos, GSV, and quality Ricoh build - but the not great video and stabilisation inclines me to wait and see what Insta360 has in the pipeline... but that probably won't include GSV which is something I really want 🙈 Why can't they just make one 360 cam that does it all???
I'm starting to find out that you either get a 360 camera that's good a photos (like this one), or one that's good at video (Insta360). You can't really get one that's good at both. You can find camera that are "okay" at both, but don't have amazing results at either.
Thx a lot for your insights and the comparison with the Z1 and One X2! It looks like a dream camera for prosumer 360 photography. What baffles me is the price in Europe. It's listed at 1000€ 😲
Ben, I think you have nailed its position in the market. I believe its a killer as a quick, low end point 'n shoot camera for GSV or realestate tours. Agree with your comments about the Insta for video. I think I might just have to sell my Qoocam 8k.
Great video as always Ben. In your opinion, is it worth changing from a Z1 to an X for virtual tours? And also wondered if you'd had a chance to compare the two cameras on quality with Matterport yet.
I think I'm gonna swap from Z1 to X. The main part of my business is real estate photography but I also offer virtual tours. The Z1 dual fisheye plugin is great, but the workflow is very long. Each 9-bracket capture takes about 2 minutes to fully complete which usually adds 45-60 mins onsite during a shoot. If the X can create comparable HDRs in-camera (assuming the capture is almost instant like the Z1 built-in HDR), then it's very worth it to me as I would be able to shoot most properties in less than 10 mins AND not have to stitch or do a raw workflow.
Hello Ben, thanks for the information, I have always had trust in your advice. Owning the original Z1 and happy with what the camera is. Will you be doing a direct Z1 versus X video in the future?
Absolutley love your videos, happy to see your doing well and glad for the update. I am currently trying to figure out which camera would be the best for beginners. Thus far I've concluded that I'd like the Insta360° or the Theta X. Not sure if I'd be doing more pictures or videos but could you suggest if you were in my position, as in price wise, best capability for both camera and video and durability. Really, really appreciate all you do.
Wow fantastic screen insta 360 x2 need to upgrade the little round weird screen much better square or rectangular by far the ricoh x thanks for your video
Hey Ben, you mention in other video a great new camera, Trisio 360 camera, it blow my mind!. I think would be interesting to compare Trisio with Theta X thanks for all your amazing review
Ricoh stopped offering the plugins via the camera on the Theta X back in May or June 2023, I think. You now have to upload them to the camera via the USB cable from a computer from the plug-in store.
Nice video! But Ben, I have a doubt for taking profesional 360 photos, I have an insta x2, it’s nice to use, but photos are a little poor… I just thinking Get the insta pro 2… more expensive (5.000€ more) than Theta X… so what you would recomend me for profesional and detail pictures? I don’t know if Theta Z1 if is an old camera…
Hi Daniela, do not buy the Pro 2! It’s a video focused camera and is massive overkill. You will get far better results with Theta X at a cheaper price point.
@@BenClaremont thank you so much Ben! But if I use 3dvista isn’t better take pictures with more resolución for can see details… or with Theta X is enough? Thank you again!
Thank you for the honest review.... I will say the last video I saw seemed to have forgotten the Insta360. I think a lot of 360 reviews will be crap and miss bits of existing cameras. We shot a lot of 360 tours in Melbourne, it would be nice to test this against out work flow, PanoHead photography is starting to get peoples attention when wanting detail, and I have followed your 'denoise' advise in the past, but if this can do what my R5 can do without the extra 21 photos, it will be interesting to compare.
Ben, great review and information. Could you add some insight on wifi range compared to Z1? I have been taking pictures at industrial plants etc and sometimes the range could be an issue.
Thanks! I think it will be better as it has a few different wifi modes including client mode which connects to any wifi connection, which would hypothetically extend it significantly
Just wondering if we use Matterport, then what the role of RAW mode is? Can we shoot 11K with Matterport? I’m just regretting that I didn’t buy a Theta Z1 but a One X2, since photos captured on Matterport from my One X2 are a bit overexposed, which is so unsatisfying.
Just got the z1 second gen in my hands and It looks good but the resolution is a bit low. As long as one is stabilized then setting the ISO ceiling at 80 noise should be controlled well. Furthermore higher resolution cameras allow for more latitude when de-noising. Unless one is doing serious high-end projects the low post-processing workflow will be more practical for daily use as a single freelancer.
Speaking about the high quality of photos you didn't mention XPhase 🔥 As for Theta X, I'm sure it will be not just better, but way better because of its specs after a while. Thank you for the review👍
The Xphaze pro X2 provides great detail and is very good but the stiching in small rooms sucks big time. I have been shooting with it for a long time. Theta cameras have much better stiching.
Feel this is a real estate workhorse to be used for quick and easy tours, with a bit of video capability thrown in. Alas won’t be reaching for the bank book to buy one I think. Looking to see what insta come up with as it can’t be long for them to counter this with something better.
Great info and video Ben! To me this new camera is not really exciting compared to the One X2. There should be much more quality improvement in video mode.
interesting and thank you for the quick tip about a user who shoots more video than photos. I'll be looking at the insta360 X2 as a vr content creator who's making more videos than photos. Also, have you checked out EBSynth? Cery cool application and been getting some interesting tests when using it with 360 footage.
Riding a recumbent trike have found 360 photos to be amazing. Video wise, the SC2 was a messily 3 minutes and no way to record back-to-back in video mode. Can time back-to-back photos, not videos. Seems stupid to me, as we were in some really pretty country on a very rural trail, and I had assumed the video was going to be longer than 3 minutes. Only had the SC2 for a week then. So, my questions are in regards to the video, as I assume the photo timing options are still there. (1) How long can the Theta X record videos? (2) Can the X record smaller chunks of video, in succession, meaning back to back? Reason for this is obvious for RUclips and social media sires, smaller chucks are easily uploaded & quicker, also easier to load to the iPhone. Oh, and what is the maximum MicroSD card size that the X can use?? Thank you. Great video. Now get that X on a bicycle, or better yet, a recumbent trike. If the trike has a headrest use a stiff single monopod as an extender, reversed obviously, and mount above your helmet/head. Wished I could find a monopod that extended 12 feet with the smaller section having the camera mount, with a secure snap-over lock. Sadly I have not found one sold retail. With the extended mount one can reach up rather high and get some amazing 360 landscape shots, that make terrific small globe photos even, and great group shots are attainable in places where a drone cannot go. Only the wealthy can afford the better drones with better imagine quality, and I'm a mere novice with a huge imagination. On that, is the camera mount on the X still plastic/nylon? Wished it was a metal alloy. ciao :)
Get insta360 one x2. It's a better video camera. Also drones are now affordable, you can get dji mini drone similar price with a 360 camera. And the image quality is very good.
Great video, I will wait to see what GoPro and Insta360 have to offer next as I take more 360 videos. So far my (unfortunately slightly scratched) One R does the job well. I guess I could overcome the limited stabilization with DaVinci Resolve spherical stabilizer, but it would be a bit more of a hassle.
Hi Ben, I'm new to your channel and I think it's great. my question is: I want to offer the 360 virtual tours to my business. which camera and software is the best choice (maybe slightly better than budget) should o start out with?
#4 - No physical shutter button. Yes there is. It's the half-circle shape under the screen. If you press it the camera takes a photo. Touching the screen is the secondary method for activating the shutter 🙂 Ricoh had an interview with the designer who said the shutter button was a point of contention on the design team. They originally were going with a circular button but he didn't like the design aesthetic. The team said the half-circle wasn't intuitively a shutter button. He disagreed and said new users would find their thumb resting there and push it and then know. Apparently he was wrong (I too first used the touch screen).
Great video buddy! Nice camera. I also really like the Trisio lite 2, even though the res is only 8k for photo and its doesnt support raw (yet). Is it almost as detailed for photo as the Theta X which has a res of 11k?
Currently using a Theta V, which is decent, but barely good enough for my needs. Really looking forward to this and it will probably be a day-1 purchase when available in the US, assuming there aren't any major supply chain issues. Glad to see the comparisons with the Z1... good to know that the few areas where the Z1 is better on paper end up being almost a wash in the side-by-side comparisons. Hopefully the APIs for it are very similar to the V and Z1 so 3rd party vendors can integrate it quickly.
Still using my Theta V (since 2017). Was looking at the Z1 as you can find it as low as $400 for a good unit on Ebay. Think I'll hold out for the more detailed images of the X, though, once I find a deal. But I imagine going from the V to the X was nice, from what I've seen.
It's a "no" from me until they enable RAW capability. I've been shooting with the original Z1 for a long time and I love the camera and the ability to shoot RAW. JPG only is a major step backwards, especially if you want to get the very best from your 360 images.
I tried shooting RAW with my Z1 but still found the sharpness a little disappointing even after editing. (I admit I'm not an expert with RAW) Using the Dual fisheye plugin with 5 exposures I found the results comparable after zooming in but not really better. I found tone mapping with RAW had some benefits from one image exposure.
@@davidk6264 JPG is far too limiting if you want to get the best out of your images. JPG is only 8bit. What you save in size you lose in adjustment. Sharpening on jpgs is done in the drone and baked in. RAW sharpening is done in post and far more adjustable. Basically, if you want something quick and easy that the camera produces for you with limited options in post use JPG. If you want much better control it has to be RAW.
I think this camera checks almost all the boxes for me. Removable, easily swappable battery, built-in GPS, micro SD card, ethernet over USB-C, standalone operation, in-camera stitching. And all this while maintaining and even improving the picture-quality. The improvements in 360-videos are also quite nice, but I'm generally less interested in 360 videos, and especially not in 360-action videos. Like others, I'd like an option to shoot in RAW+ mode to be available but it's not a deal-breaker for me. Maybe they can add that via software or firmware updates? I'd also like to have underwater housing to be available for this camera -- it's only available for Theta V and similar. I'll be buying this camera, even though I already have a Theta V and a Theta Z1. I cannot fully justify buying another 360 camera but I also cannot resist the urge.
only 30fps at 5.7k is far behind if you consider, that this has been available for a couple of years now. Still waiting for a 6K/60fps VR360 or VR180 Stereoscopic camera. Nothing really available now, although VR is rising pretty much.
I have the Z1 and enjoy using it for fun but if there’s one thing I really wish Ricoh would fix it’s that’s dreadful stitch line it produces 😩 Everything else about it I’m very happy with 👌🏻 but I certainly won’t be upgrading or changing mine unless they can somehow fix that blurry line.
I own 4 Thetas (V, SC2, X and Z) as well as the 1X2 - got my X yesterday and the build/material quality struck me as inferior to all of the others. But hey, in 6 years I haven't broken or scratched a lens yet (virtual knock on wood)..
Im toying with the idea of creating a vr360 video experience with the possibility of basic (constrained) locomotion. It wouldnt be anything like as good as the eperiences blueplanet, or other sight, but Im interested in experimenting with vr programing along those lines. I havent bought a 360 camera yet, but I keep coming back to the Ricoh family. Do you think you could recommend a camera for a beginner suitable for some 360 video and imagery?
Sorry for the delay... for some reason Australia is the last country to get new cameras posted 😅

They originally were going with a circular button but he didn't like the design aesthetic. The team said the half-circle wasn't intuitively a shutter button. He disagreed and said new users would find their thumb resting there and push it and then know. Apparently he was wrong (I too first used the touch screen).
I found this very late too, was using the touch screen for a while.
Great video buddy! Nice camera. I also really like the Trisio lite 2, even though the res is only 8k for photo and its doesnt support raw (yet). Is it almost as detailed for photo as the Theta X which has a res of 11k?
Will do a comparison as soon as I’m back from my honeymoon- stay tuned 👌
xtremely pricey for end users
It’s cheaper than their previous camera
Currently using a Theta V, which is decent, but barely good enough for my needs. Really looking forward to this and it will probably be a day-1 purchase when available in the US, assuming there aren't any major supply chain issues. Glad to see the comparisons with the Z1... good to know that the few areas where the Z1 is better on paper end up being almost a wash in the side-by-side comparisons. Hopefully the APIs for it are very similar to the V and Z1 so 3rd party vendors can integrate it quickly.
Agreed
@BenBenson Ack... Clearly the X is on my mind. ;) I meant Theta V ... Comment corrected, thanks!
Still using my Theta V (since 2017). Was looking at the Z1 as you can find it as low as $400 for a good unit on Ebay. Think I'll hold out for the more detailed images of the X, though, once I find a deal. But I imagine going from the V to the X was nice, from what I've seen.
Hey, Mr. Ben… may the missing RAW abilities be solved with a software update or is this an unsolvable issue?
They won’t.. I’ll be releasing a video about this very shortly
I loved to see a comparaison vs insta360 one x2
streaming? over wifi?
It does wired streaming I believe
Is it waterproof?
No.
Anyone know yet if this one is also supported for Zillow 3D tours and Matterports?
Yes X will be Matterport compatible
I better start hustling hard so I'm ready for it to be available here in Canada.
With the 2023-Apr fimware update v2.0, isn't the Maximum clip length is till the battery runs out or approx. 40mins?
It overheats at 5-10 minutes of 5.7K
only 30fps at 5.7k is far behind if you consider, that this has been available for a couple of years now. Still waiting for a 6K/60fps VR360 or VR180 Stereoscopic camera. Nothing really available now, although VR is rising pretty much.
Agreed
No RAW - no deal. But they will probably add that (hope). Thanks for the review! Good Job.
7:44 sold me. Just GG! Waiting for my investment :D greatings from cologne
What is the maximum exposure time it can take??
60 seconds I think but will confirm
