I have two thoughts on this camera, and superzooms in general. One, I can see having a camera like this for wildlife, not many of us can afford to purchase a lens that can compete with the reach of these cameras. And if we could, who wants to lug it around on a hike. My other thought is, as we moved from film photography(which the images weren't always stellar, but we accepted them. We expect perfection from digital images and pixel peep in order to make sure that there is no sign of noise. Me personally, don't mind a bit of noise if it's not offensive. With small sensor cameras, you will get more noise than a larger sensor camera, that's just the tradeoff, but you can reach the picture that you want to shoot. I'd rather have the image with a bit of noise than not having it. Plus, I think these cameras are more for outside use, so low light shouldn't be a problem in most cases. Just my person thoughts.

This was my 4th or 5th review of the P900 and P1000 that I listen to, and the best 30 minutes invested in a video today, I feel this review is on target and honest, I was a pretty decent photographer, had my dark room, 4 cameras and my prefered was a Contax Quartz 139 with a Zeiss Planar lense, once married, everything went out....recently bought a couples of small Canon digital cameras, but now I feel I want to have fun again with a camera, I will try this Nikon (sacrilege I never thought I would get a Nikon...lolll...!!!!) Thanks for the review!

Hi. I've had mine for 2 and a half years now. I still smile nearly each time I use the P 1000. I've own the P900 before I bought the 1000 and shot with it for nearly 3 years. I've recently purchases the Sony rx100 mark 6 used for $600 and it hadn't really been use a hole lot. Love the image quality of the small point and shoot and very handy to carry with me more times then the P 1000 but love them both very much. I still own several DSLR's and a ton of glass that to be honest I have not use in years. The convenient of these types of cameras just feel easier and enjoy taking photos with.

Thank you! I think you NAILED it! I have loved my P900 & yesterday I found a P1000 at a pawn shop ($550.00---LCD screen not functional but I don't use it anyway). I'm NOT a professional photographer but do so enjoy all the options of these cameras. We travel a LOT. So carrying around different, heavy, expensive lenses with a heavy camera body became way too cumbersome...especially as I'm getting older (58). This is such a great camera for 'travel'. I wanted the P1000 to take to Antarctica next year. Excited now that I have it to actually use it on our visit to the 7th continent! You are incredibly professional in your presentation & THANK YOU for NEVER saying, "UM" in this video!!!! Brava.

Great review. Honest pros & cons. I personally have the P900 and for my purposes... it's a very good fit. Very versatile unit from Macro to Superzoom and as good a pic quality as any other point & shoot for close to mid ranges. Don't think for me anyway the extra size/weight/cost is commensurate with the 4K & RAW functionality. Nikon have done a stupendous job though with both these cameras. Horses for courses as they say...

I am a Canon DSLR user for 40 years approx. My philosophy always is: know the possibilities of the gear, know the limitations of the gear and use your brain instead of expectations! I have all kinds of lenses collected in these years. But I bought this camera, because with training I can do handheld-zoom pictures very good. I was in a shooting club and with practice you can learn how to hold your hand steady. This cam fills a gab, that you cannot close with DSLR/DSLM, which is handheld zoom. When I go hiking, sure, I can take a mule which will carry my whole DSLR stuff or simply takt this one. I do NOT use it for portrait, Sports events, landscape, because I have the much better equip for it. It is a perfect, a real perfect addition for me.

    Excellent review. Thank-you.
I really wanted to like this camera. I had it in my amazon basket a little before it was actually available and agonized over it. In the end, I canceled before it shipped. The idea of a 3000mm zoom for perching, small birds is very appealing. But, I am a bear for IQ and a long time user of an EF600mm f/4.0 IS lens and, in my heart, knew that this sensor could not deliver IQ I would be content with over the long term. It still intrigues me but I think it would be a mistake for me to buy this camera. Probably a blast to play with for a few days but . . . .

Best review of this camera. The only one I’ve seen by a pro that didn’t treat it as a novelty and actually tries to understand how people actually use this camera. Took it seriously and actually spent a reasonable amount of time shooting with it. I likely will buy one of these. It won’t be my first, or even my second, camera but for some situations nothing else will work.

Heading to Tanzania for 3 months lots of wildlife an sceneries. I choose to purchase the P1000 since I am not a photographer. Mainly because I prefer capturing a lion/elephant/big 5 at 3000 mm vs up close. Incidentally I did capture the eclipse (first use of the camera) in Austin TX some shots awesome/some not. I asked for help learning the camera willing to pay $$$ for lessons but got nowhere. Resorted to RUclips. If I was a professional photographer I agree this isn't the camera for us people who just want to capture an experience....well you'll have to wait until I return. Great review.

Well done, I have had a P900 Nikon for 3 years and love it. It's got the capabilities that I love to use. I'm disabled in my walking capabilities and money. I have recently bought a 2nd hand removable lens D3400 with kit lens, i got this specifically for long exposure, nighttime shots, etc. However in saying that my P900 does everything to a certain degree as you said. I would find it difficult to carry a backpack of lenses around but do find my walking stick great instead of a tripod. I am in a photography club for people over 50 and I might need to start a P900 club as well as 6 of my friends also have the P900, just because they've seen what I can do with this camera. Maybe one day I'll buy a better camera and lenses to continue on with but for now, I'll stick to what I've got cheers.

And I am searching for compact camera where I can go everywhere with small sized bag...tossing between sonys' and canons' and nikons' .. And got a good review about a bridge camera... Brilliant review.... ♥️

The old best zoom camera, the Canon SX60, was such a pain when the battery went dead and it was on a tripod. You had to take it off the tripod to change it. This charging capability is the bomb. My 900 is on the way.

I always love your videos. This is the first time I’ve ever seen a camera like this! It would have been handy during my recent Alaska trip! I do own two very good Nikon DSLR’s my best one is my D500 which I love and am still learning. I also still own my older but still decent D300 which is the only camera I’ve used so far to shoot the Milky Way with decent results. Can’t wait to get that D500 to a dark summer place! I suppose it wouldn’t make as much sense for me to also have the P1000 in addition to those other setups but if I didn’t already have those, I think it would be a marvelous choice! I’m still thinking of those shots of the Grizzlies which I DIDN’T get because I didn’t have the zoom capability! If I’m not careful here, I could talk myself into a third beasty camera!

Solid review. You've provided some great information. I have a casual hobby of taking pictures of airliners flying over at average heights of 30,000 to 40,000 feet, which I do with a Canon HS50XS. The shots are somewhat grainy overall, but depending on the clarity in the sky that day, can be fairly good. This camera only has a 50X zoom, so I am curious to see what I would get at 125X zoom. Not even sure if the Nikon P1000 is the best camera for that, but I don't want to spend a million dollars for something that is nothing more than a fun hobby. A bit of stabilization at that distance would be nice too when trying to track and focus on an object moving at 500 mph.

This is a great review. I have the P900 and I have got some great shots with it, but I know it's limitations. Mainly, it's ability to auto focus in low light. The P900 doesn't shoot in raw either. I use a fine adjustment on my tripod for long zoom shots.

19:12 I think you can see more detail on the P1000 image. Though putting an unsharp mask on the DSLR image could help. If you look through the window on the left you can see the window frame on P1000. On the DSLR image it is more blurred. The results are about similar to what I got comparing by Canon SX520 HS at 180 mm to EOS M at 200 mm.

Its all about the big zoom lens. If I wanted to buy a big zoom (which I don't) I think I would get this instead of a high-cost lens to attach to a camera body. Its a big zoom with its own camera attached. Actually, the P900 is probably more compelling.

I want the P1000 for the zoom but if I get one I will be carrying 2 cams as I love my old Nikon D3 and the quality of the pics that one generates :) I did buy a cheep used Sigma no IS 150 - 500mm zoom I put on the D3 and took 100+ pics all handheld and almost all of them was good with no motion blur, but that setup it is very heavy to carry and you are locked at only tele zoom pics unless you want to keep changing lenses which is time consuming unless you have 2 cams with you. I also testes same 150 - 500m lens on a light Nikon D7000 and 90% was useless because of motion blur (that heavy D3 body is better at "image stabilization" then some of the Nikon IS lenses without having any IS built in at all lol)

I got one a few weeks ago. The camera has some great updated features vers, the P900 ( which I also have ) The manual focus ring is a huge plus. Unfortunately once I zoomed beyond 2000mm the picture quality and sharpness dropped off. At full zoom - 3000mm I couldn't get a single focused image in manual or auto focus. Maybe I just got a bad one but I ended up returning it.

I have the D7100 and a Canon SX50 ultra zoom. So I really can't justify the $1300 or so Aussi dollar price tag. Photography is just a hobby for me. But it would sure be fun to have that sort of zoom capability for maybe covering a surf carnival or such in bright light. Thanks for the review, well done.

I have a P1000 and I think your review is right-on true, great job!
To design a camera with P1000 zoom characteristics for a full-sized sensor would necessitate impossibly large dimensions and weight, so the P1000
needs to be respected for what it is, rather than what it is not. You have made this point quite well in this video.

I’ve owned this camera for a few months in addition to a full frame DSLR. I agree with almost everything in your review. I have a 400mm full frame lens but I still find I can never get close enough like I can with the P1000, even cropping. So I use the P1000 for pictures I couldn’t otherwise get because wildlife and birds are just too far away. I’ve become pretty good at handholding it zoomed in, it just took practice.

  • @stevematthewsteethofthelam1367

Your assessment is probably the most honest, the most unbiased and fair assessment I’ve watched. The P1000 was a perfect fit for my purposes, this being my first quality camera. I purchased it as a useful tool and a entertaining hobby. Exposure to the Nikon P1000 has upped my knowledge of the befits of using manual modes. I tend to be getting out much more with this camera, I’ve been planing trips and looking for shots that I was previously unable to capture. No camera is able to please everyone, as you mentioned it really depends on ones expectations and desires. I was also limited on the size of my pocket book, the Nikon P1000 was for me the best BANG! FOR THE BUCK. Thanks for another great review.

yep I also got into photography because of a superzoom. But for me it's an old Canon Sx50 from my mother wich I am borrowing all the time for taking bird pictures lol. Just upgraded to a Nikon D500 (thanks again mom!) and a Tamron 150-600mm (my bank account did not like that) wich are in the process of shipping right now. Can't wait for them to arrive but I'll never forget my trusty superzoom!

I think you just made me decide to go for it. I know there are cameras that will get me better quality shots, but I'm not a professional and I'd rather have the zoom capability here in the mountains to stalk all the animals. :) My pictures just go on Instagram, so I'm OK sacrificing some quality.

@@thetinycathouse Thats wonderful, I know that I’ve really enjoyed my P1000 and I’ve been able to take shots of wildlife, plants and insects that were way to far away to get any other way other than with a mega zoom, dragon fly’s are impossible to sneak up on, but I’ve gotten shots from 15 to 20 feet away, they look as good as any macro’s that I’ve seen on the web. where I can even see the hairs and veins in the wings, the shots look great. Yes one can find higher pixel photos but it requires a magnifying glass or computer app to see the differences, IMHO. Steve.

@@stevematthewsteethofthelam1367 So far, I'm loving it. Definitely getting shots I'd have no other way to get. Still learning to work around its limitations, but even just taking it out on full auto the first time to learn the baseline of the camera got me some great shots. Now hoping for more days with better light as winter ends.

I bought my P1000 in December and spent the cold months reading a great Guide by Alexander White, Published by White Knight Press. Having done that I went out there and shot birds and bugs galore. The stability amazes me. Handheld I feel I can handle 800mm with confidence.
The Birding feature is amazing. Find the subject and with one touch of the OK button, it snaps to the zoom you pre-choose. I feel 500-800 is excellent. If you used the target finder at 24mm it usually sits with the target pretty close to the center and then you compose the shot with little effort.
Macro is excellent also and I was able to step even this up a notch with a 77mm 10X close-up screw on Macro.
Your video was wonderfully presented and you are so right. With a little bit of knowledge by experience or a great user guide, one gets to know this camera enough to know it's limitations and ways to adjust for them.
I spent a month or so wondering if I had made a mistake buying this little beast simply because of all the bad press and video. So I stopped watching and learned how to use it.
    Just love it now.
Have a D5200 with 3 lens and all the filters that I've been using for 6 years. I think it's getting lonely.

Thanks for the tip re the Alexander White book. While my other half who is a professional photographer will watch RUclips videos to improve his knowledge (and he has the YT algorithm that will send him to the good ones) I will put in the same search and get frustrated. Some people are full of jargon, others go too fast or too slow. I would rather read something so I can skim over the bits I know but read and reread those concepts that are new to me. We are going on safari and my other half bought me this camera due to the weight restrictions we have for luggage so I don't want to take my usual dSLR setup with different lenses because that is much heavier.

Great review! I have been using the D80 for 10 years, but got the P1000 for this past Xmas. I have to honestly say that I never pull out my D80 unless it's for Super Macro anymore. I absolutely love my P1000 to the point that if I leave the house without it, I feel sick. I have gotten some of the most incredible shots and video footage, and I am a total amateur; this camera deserves better than me. It has inspired me to learn more about photography, all the minute details that I never understood before, such as ISO, exposure, various shooting techniques, etc.... I feel that even an accomplished photographer would benefit from adding this gem to their camera collection. I love being able to see the rings of Saturn and the stripes on Jupiter with it. The color capture ability, to get the true sunrise and sunset colors my eyes see...that alone is worth the price of this camera. Blows my mind on a daily basis, all the incredible details I could be missing from afar, but this camera allows me to see. And I take photos of EVERYTHING in my path. The only drawback is the weight, it makes my hands go numb lol. I had to purchase the hand grip strap that allows me to still hold it but flex my fingers without fear of dropping it. And I agree on the tripod, I am working on a prototype that will attach to most heavy duty tripods to help stabilize this monster when fully zoomed out. As well, I do suggest purchasing a separate wall charger and extra batteries, as I DO run my batteries out of life, sometimes 2-3 batteries a day. So, I have 6 batteries total...just in case. Happy Shooting Y'all! #iWillShootYouWithMyCamera this is my hashtag on IG

The zoom is unparrelled and great fun to use. Many of the people who complain about this camera have never shot with a long zoom camera lens and expect to get tack sharp photos handheld at 3000mm every shot. Thanks again

Great video. I used to have a crap load of Lenses for my Nikon DSLR some 15 years ago. From Wide angle, right up to 300mm with 2x attachments. Used to knacker me out carting all that stuff about too.
Now I just have a small bridge camera. But I'm looking to get something slightly larger. And better. So I've been looking at the P1000 as it hits the "sweet spot" for me.
However. I did find it interesting your comment about "playing a game of monopoly" while it zoomed in.
But I ask you. How long did it take to do that? 5 seconds or so? Maybe? Certainly less than 10 seconds.
    Now picture this.
You're out with your DSLR. You have your ?? to 500mm zoom lens on your camera. You've also got, for example, a 1500mm fixed lens in your bag.
You see some beast in the distance that you need your 1500mm lens for.
How long will it take you to change the lenses over? Safely. 2 minutes? 3 minutes. Swapping the lenses over and putting everything back safely.
And by the time you've done that, that beast you wanted to take a photo' of, has all but gone.
With any bridge camera, especially this one, that beast is still going to be there after you've zoomed right up to it.

I like bridge cameras for their flexibility but also suffer from sensor size envy. Additionally I do want the performance of a good mirrorless such as a Z6 or A7iii. My comprise is the Sony RX10 IV. It doesn’t have the zoom of the P1000 but the 600mm equivalent is more than adequate for my needs. Most of all, the performance of this camera is phenomenal. I must say your review of the P1000 was the best I’ve seen!

My gosh, where do these people come from?? During the 6 minute mark the highly intelligent and qualified photographer discusses how long it takes time to use the zoom; and the discussion of hand-held versus tripod; all of this discussion is incredibly shocking to hear stated. Of course; tripods are used for zooming; of course it takes time to run the zoom. I've used 20:1 zoom lenses that cost $20,000 for the chunk of glass...and it's stuck on a $80,000 tv camera. Of course, a tripod head needs a bracket to balance the camera and huge zoom lens cuz it's "physics", stuff that everyone I knew figured out in the 6th or 7th grade! Folks, ya gotta be VERY grateful and RESPECTFUL of the tremendous engineering and production quality and THE LOW PRICE of entry for this type of TECHNOLOGY. wow.... Common sense, gratitude, humility, those virtues used to be "common" among the millions of Americans cruising around the Lower 48. Thank you Leigh for your excellent overview, this is the first time I've seen your channel and am thinking of getting 'dis camera just for giggles. Many thanks to Nikon and Canon for making fantastic cameras & lenses that cost next to NOTHING compared to the technology that routinely existed 10, 20 or 30 years ago. The full frame tech is obviously "normal" for high standard photography...this camera is largely aimed for the consumer or pro-sumer as a 2nd set of gear and a full frame as the first set. Folks...be THANKFUL for the low cost and high tech that this technology accomplishes.

I think it's great that you guys did this review. It was a very even-handed review, my respect. IMO the photography community as a whole can be a little too snobbish for its own good.
I think what most people should realize, is that this camera is generally not meant for people who have shot with DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. It will generally be bought by people who want to get into photography or who want a little more than what a point-and-shoot offers, but who don't want to go all the way to a DSLR or mirrorless system.
Some very lovely shots. Besides the obvious long-range shots, what most impressed me were the macro-ish shots of bugs (21:15). Typically macro suffers from too shallow DoF, but not this camera!

"I think what most people should realize, is that this camera is generally not meant for people who have shot with DSLRs and mirrorless cameras."
Very true ... I'm a long time DSLR user and I just can't imagine using such a camera. As I usually shoot at wide and standard angles and because I favor image quality over focal length range, these huge zooms have zero appeal to me.
The size of the camera is also a big turn off, I just can't imagine using this on a trip or for extended periods of time.
More power to you if this fulfills your camera needs ... ... no snobbiness intended. ;o)

Fantastic and impressive camera for what it is, looking at the images I wouldn't want it, not sharp enough for me, I am using either D850 or a6300 for travel and both just produce far better results. I might not get the focal flexibility I could get on the P1000 but in most cases I don't really need so much zoom anyways. Good for general user but not for me and my standards.

For a do-everything camera, you can't beat it. My first digital camera was a Nikon Coolpix 5700 which garnered me some very nice images. I sold that camera but years later reacquired one to have as a memento.
I use point and shoot more than my Dslr which says a lot for how much manufacturers can cram into a small package. Long focal length quickly loses its appeal unless you need that feature.
I will be getting one of these when cheaper on the used market simply to have a long lens when needed, which isn't often.
