  • People go bananas for bananas. But a lack of genetic diversity has put Australia’s favourite fruit at risk of extinction. Subscribe to ABC Science RUclips 👉 ab.co/2YFO4Go
While we might eventually lose the Cavendish, don’t despair. Scientists are working on disease resistant varieties that will taste just like it. Paul West tastes tests the bananas that are in development.

Nice. Never knew how little cavendish banana diversity there is. Pretty interesting stuff.

Would the San Miguel be a suitable alternative? Or the Canary Island Banana? Occasionally I have had another variety, Lady's Fingers, which is smaller than the Cavendish and a tad sweeter. Have also tried red bananas, but found them too starchy, and needed to be somewhat overripe before they are palatable.

Consumers should ask for more diversity. Monoculture is killing agriculture and also human nutrition.

I hate the Cavendish banana. I wish there was more diversity. Like apples, you can choose one you like.

Given the choice, I buy something that is not Cavendish.

Hm. I never noticed the food trend in recent videos. This is great! Thanks, team!
Everybody, did they explain why the plants get chopped down, instead of being left to grow more bananas?

Is chopped because it won't grow no more bananas in that plant. And if you notice the plant isn't chopped completely to give nutrients to the next one. Will grow strong as the first one. 🙏🙏🇵🇷🙏🙏👍👍👍👍

Aloha how goes it? Good report. I am staying on a farm in Hawaii on a Greens farm and Waimanalo and over the past 10 years. My friend here has a eradicated bunchy top virus from all of his bananas. Watering them with catfish water. He is the largest catfish farmer in Hawaii so he uses all the water on his fruit trees. And the banana trees are soaking up this catfish water and we have a eradicated bunch top virus. And the bananas grow big racksEesti. And we have just this year planted the golden banana here would love to have the information on the research center there in Australia. If you could send me a link that would be wonderful, thank you. Aloha.

I've never had a Cavendish. I like bananas a bit under ripe. Before they get too mushy and sweet. Lady fingers are way too sweet for me.

Cavendish banana 🍌 is what they sell in all grocery stores etc so I’m pretty sure that you’ve had one.

It should be manufacturing vs farming. When we use high tech in farming, it is industrialized farming vs manual/ primitive farming in poor countries. Industry vs agriculture is the wrong term.
