  • Palm oil is cheap and ubiquitous. It’s used in thousands of everyday products and is the most widely consumed vegetable oil on the planet. You can get a kilo of palm oil for just $2. But its usage has become unsurprisingly controversial, as huge areas of rainforest have been cut down or burned to make way for palm plantations. So, why is this oil still so cheaply and readily available?

@@tella117 well, lets look at who just made up some facts right here! Although the earth does has a cycle, that cycle is very long and has stable changes in temperature. From the industrial revolution onwards, the amount of Co2 humans release into the atmosphere as boomed. Now you might be thinking " well trees will take care of it" but they don't. Durring the summer is when there are the lowest points of Co2 in the atmosphere because all trees have leaves. During the winter, the Co2 levels rise. This causes a continues heating of the earth because of the output of Co2 humans produce. If you look at recorded graphs, you will see a rise in Co2 emissions. You may say this is just a cycle. Its not. Look at previous Co2 cycles and their rate of change. Nothing compares to the current rapid rate of increase. I would advise you backing up your claims with reasoning and evidence before spewing false facts.

    2) Palm oil trees produce fresh fruits all year long for 30 years with minimal chemical fertilizer, can your own crops do the same?
    3) Palm oil tree is a jungle/ forest tree not like corn, wheat, canola, sunflower etc.
    4) Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) is an African jungle tree, rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) is a Brazilian jungle tree and the durian (Durio zibethinus) is a Malaysian jungle tree. Over the years, Malaysia & Indonesia has planted billions of these wonderful trees.
    5) Malaysia & Indonesia should send invoices to develop countries for the Oxygen produced by rain forest & oil palm trees since most of the hypocrite world industrial CO2 produced in the northern hemisphere.

Th branch can the palm tree is be use for broom, for temporary house roof farmer used them for temporary house on the farm. The stem can be use for food, I mean in the middle of the palm tree when u split it there is a white something which can be cool as strew the leaf can be use to make mat. And when the palm tree dies it have animals that live it it, them are palm worms. Them are very gravy and good to steam . I used to eat them a lot. Indonesia banned export of palm oil to tackle rising domestic demand hit by high prices. Ironical that this video's main emphasis was on palm oil's "cheapness and abundant supply". @@harukrentz435 This is difficult to say. Consumers of course want cooking oil to be cheap but the medium should also suit the food that is being cooked in it. In Europe, people use olive oil as it gives a unique taste to the food and salad dressing. Palm Oil has numerous beneficial nutrients, In Asia we use coco nut oil, sunflower, safflower, corn oil, soya oil, rice bran oil etc. If palm oil goes off the market, the consumer will be forced to seek an alternative cooking oil available in the market and affordable too. I think lard made from animal fat ,butter, clarified butter (ghee) and hydrogenated fat(margarine) can be used as a cooking medium.

palm oil is VERY EFFICIENT though. If you ban palm oil, companies or whoever will still use other oils. And along with it EVEN MORE destruction of space or wtv to plant the plants they want their oil from. You have to completely ban usage of any oil from plants to prevent 'destruction' of trees or space or deforestation or whatnot.

Why is deforestation terrible in other countries, but ok in the US? My hometown used to have such beautiful forest areas and every year new neiborhoods, apartments highways and warehouses plants businesses clear more and more trees to build on the land. And yet there’s lots of old buildings rotting away in older sections of the town, no one is using them can’t those be knocked down instead to build new instead of tearing down the trees? Instead of biking or walking through forest or nature you get sidewalks and roadkill. Hypocritical to tell someone else what to do with their backyard while you do what you can to capitalize your own.

I see a lot of Indonesians in the comment section trying to defend palm oil and they lump Malaysia and Indonesia together
The problem is mostly in Indonesia
Indonesia's slash and burn methods is what's giving palm oil a bad reputation, and Malaysian palm oil is being dragged down together
Not to mention the yearly smog that Malaysia suffers
Not only is slash and burn in Indonesia hurting our public health, it's also hurting our palm oil industry
I wish the Malaysian government did more pressure Indonesia to stop using cheap slash and burn methods - if Indonesia wants to be part of the palm oil industry, it has to invest in more modern farming methods, otherwise they are just ruining the industry for the rest of us

Look at it like this, they are the huge superstore with all the power and money that moved into a small town with lots of small mom and pop shops, well they need room for their parking lot and the town's people won't sell because it's their blood, sweat, and tears, not to mention bread and butter. So that won't work so the superstore just says "oh yeah?" And sneaks over in the dead of night and lights up a whole block of stores. What happened?? Nobody knows? Was anyone killed? Nobody cares, oh look, clear land, let's just go ahead and start pouring concrete. Unfortunately they also have a currupt government that is paid to look the other way and before you know it, all the other little shops have to close because they can't compete with the prices, oh and they won't hire locally either, they'll and for people from elsewhere and take their passports and make them live in filth until their debt of getting them to said store is paid for, but jokes on them because not only they have to pay for that but also the rotten food and the leaky shelter to boot.. sorry, rant over, I just hate to see what is happening to these people and the forests

There is no "magic" in agriculture. All the nutrients a plant produces and packs into its seeds, fruits or leaves must come from somewhere. In this case, an intensive plant like the oil palm drains the nuitrients from the carbon-rich mass of the freshly slashed and burnt rainforest biomatter. Once the freshly cleared soil is drained by the palms, the whole process must be moved - you cannot do it repeatedly on one place, hence it's not sustainable. You need more and more rainforest to slash and burn and turn into oil - that's why it's problematic.
You are consuming primary plant production (the original rainforest) that took centuries to form at a breakneck speed.

The US cut forests down long before we knew about the climate crises though. Since the early 1900s, they’ve had regulations for it that these other countries don’t.

I thought activists called for palm oil to be replaced because it was unhealthy, I didn't realize some producers were cutting down forests...the deforestation to plant palm trees has to stop.
