The instructor told me "do not keep the clutch down when you're going in a down hill because the car will speed up. And I sow that ...
The idea is to let the hill start you, don't keep it down too long, as mentioned in the video try to have the clutch on the bite point by 5mph.

When I was learning my driving . I put clutch down all the time when do downhill..it speed up..all the time …. and my instructor only always screamed without telling me what happened until I asked my friends ..

Thank you, there was downhill road near the test area that I just couldn't get. It felt like I was falling forward and my brain kept putting both feet on both peddles and could not tell my brain to stop it. I've been driving automatic for 15 years and manual does my head in. This video is just what I need.

Ive been driving 30 years but been off the road a while. I stumbled across your videos and i must say ive actually learned a few more things. I used to panic at junctions where theres a slight hill. I dont always use handbrake for this anymore. If i have to stop i keep feet on brake and clutch and when im about to set off i just feel that little roll back and not panic and its great! Keep up these videos! You're an excellent teacher 😊

It's good that info is sticking. That's a good point, slowing down well is very important on country roads too. It's normally downhill junctions where new drivers suffer the most.
Conquer Driving here we have all routes set up for going downhill on country roads on very high speeds and most junctions are uphill, including small roundabouts and that's why it is so difficult. I'll definitely be watching again and again your uphill start videos as so many tips there that one watching is defo not enough. But agree, downhill braking can be tricky too, especially if you're a new driver and trying your best to not to panic 😂
The other day, that jump happened to me on a downhill and I couldn't figure out why. I thought "maybe Richard has something about it". Bingo.
On the other hand, imagine a start and stop traffic scenario on a downhill: how bad it is if I just stay clutch down and release the break to let the car advance for 3 or 5 meters everytime? Even on those occasions, should I always go to the bite point?
Just one more thing: perhaps you could make a video on going down to 2 gear before turning? Or do you have already something close enough? I do it like miles away or too late.

Your videos are really the best. I don't know if you have an idea of how much you impact for good some many people's lifes. I'd lost the battle against driving anxiety long ago if it wasn't you.
It's very nice to hear, thank you. When you are at speeds below what 1st gear can handle you should have the clutch down, downhill in traffic I let it roll forwards with the clutch down. To be honest, most of the time I leave it in neutral with the clutch and just use the brake as I hate holding the clutch down, when the traffic actually gets moving I will then put it straight into second gear at about 5mph and carry on. Many instructors won't like this method though as you see less ready to go when you're in neutral which is understandable. I have some videos on changing down gear and engine braking that may help you.

I have a hill at a stop sign going toward my house what I’ll do is coast in neutral and get to about 20 and throw it in 3rd gear as long as it’s smooth it shouldn’t be a problem

I think they do it in 10-20-30 etc' so that the divisions are more natural. If you're half-way between 1000 and 2000 (10 and 20) RPM it's 15, rather than 1.5.
Wait... I've been driving manual for 8 years and I always thought pressing the brake without the clutch was bad...
Having the gears trying to keep a speed and brakes trying to slow it down at the same time doesn't sound good
EDIT: Ah, brake until RPM is at 1,000 makes sense... My cars have always been old and cheap and had no rev-counter, until recently. That explains a lot.
I burnt through two clutches as a new driver because I self taught myself to drive manual, and I used to ride the clutch the whole way downhill, every hill. When my mum saw me do it, she was like "wtf are you doing?? No wonder we've replaced two clutches in 6 months!!" Cost my parents $700 in 1997... I'm sure it would be much more now. I wish RUclips etc had been around back then 😅
Me being lazy wanting to slow down in my manual car I just put it in neutral then use the break when coming to a stop so much easier but going down hill I cruise in about 3rd or second because for me it just sits roughly at a reasonable speed & easy to react if I need to

only time i would use the clutch while braking is doing an emergency brake or stopping very quickly (basically only ever done to go into a lay-by, slip roads can be done with engine braking)

You know what I'm finding hard? To creep down slowly from a complete stop in a super steep road. When I release the brake pedal it gains too much speed, and so it does when going to the bite point. So I end up coasting and maintaining a low speed just using my brakes. That would make a nice video.
If you want a very low speed then the brakes is how I would do it. If you want more than 5-10mph then I would lift the clutch and the gear will help you stay slow.

I had my test on the 30th. I got nervous and forgot to bring the clutch up slowly after letting go off the brake pedal and the car stalled 3 times on a downhill left turn 😬😬. I failed my test due to this. I only got 4 minors this mistake made me get a serious mistake and I failed. The rest of my test went well, I did the emergency stop correctly and forward bay parking correctly. I have never done this before during my lessons the nerves got to me.

What about when you going 50-60 mile on freeway and exiting downhill or on a red light, do you put it on 2nd gear from 5th and slow down? Or 5th 4th 3th ect.

Hi there am still having a problem with my clutch but am learning from your videos am too slow
You hardly wanna use the clutc, if the car is rolling, do not press the clutch cause it will wear out n it costs way to much to replace. Only press the clutch down if you wanna put it in to neutral or when the Faris stationary
The clutch does not wear when it is down, only when it's at the bite point. Using the clutch unnecessarily however leads to poor control.

Just today i nearly shoot through a junction cause i had the clutch down and sped up sooo much, when i was trying to slow down
Today was my first actual driving lesson, this was something I freaked out I bit. I remember we pulled off from a t- junction going downhill and I was still in 1st gear and then the instructor asked to change to 2nd gear. The moment I pressed the clutch the car started flying away and rushed too hard for the brakes. You were right about how sensitive brake pedal is
It does take some getting used to. Keep practising and you will improve.

I always coast when doing downhill... Is that bad??
my father told me if downhill and you know you are stopping just put gear in neutral and just break no need to clutch
to drive downhill/slope downward with below 3 km per hour (say, 1 or 2 km per hour) what shall be done. I have watched your video on keeping manual car slow but that is in flat surface.
Keep the clutch down and use the brake to stay slow. The hill will provide the power.

Thanks for another great video. Recently passed and have a query after a road trip to the lake district. There were lots of steep roads, some of which are very long downhill. Would you 'ride the brakes' most of the way down which probably could burn the brake pads, or go into 2nd gear with the engine revs really high (though not redlining)? Either way sounds not great for the car, but surely there must be a better way to control the speed on a long winding road downhill? Going uphill is simpler where I just listen to the sound of the engine for the appropriate gear. Thanks.
High revs does not harm the engine as long as it's had some time to warm up. I'll get the revs as high as necessary without going into the limiter to reduce brake usage.

Hello can you make a video of how to control the car speed when driving downhill. If the car is still moving fast in 2nd gear, do you go in 1st gear for engine braking or just use the brake?
Avoid 1st gear for engine breaking. It's rough for the synchromesh.
Just press the break (leave the car in 2nd) and if you do end up being slower than 7mph or so or under 1000rpm use 1st (but be gentle on releasing clutch)
Use 1st when you're standing still or extremely slow/very low RPMs in 2nd gear.

I love ur video you take time to explain in every little detail for even a slow learner to understand. Is left hand drive cars that confused me which is the American type cars. But its the British made type we use in the island of Trinidad & Tobago so its all good. But anyway if I'm just cruising on the road in any gear mainly 2nd gear do I have to change to any other gear if I'm cruising for a long distance or I don't??? Can you either make a video explaining to me or reply clearly to me please? Thanks.
Thank you for the compliment, ideally you want to try and stay in the highest gear possible for engine longevity and fuel economy. If the engine struggles then you need a lower gear.

i've started driving for 3 months now. Living in a hilly area, road to my home from office is a very steep downhill with a 90 degree curve. I can never have the courage to drive down this road relying on foot brake and engine brake because what if im too late to press the clutch, the engine will stall and the power brake will be off, im afraid i may fly off at the curve. So, i just press clutch fully down with left foot and control my speed downhill with the foot brake. Everytime. Although i know it's not the right way😥
If the engine stalled you would still have power brakes until you release and press the brake pedal again depleting the vacuum assist. If you're in an appropriate gear the brakes will find it easier with the clutch up unless you are very slow, like less than 10mph.

And waste your brake pads because of gravity acceleration,,
@@nikyabodigital if you're driving in traffic then you won't need to brake from a high speed and that won't damage the break pads much and if there's no traffic then you can speed up till the speed limit and then select the appropriate gear and thus reduce the load on engine for accelerating.

Hii, my car doesn't have a tachometer, just the speedometer. I have this problem of pressing down on the clutch real early while braking because I fear if I just press on the breaks and don't press clutch at the right time, my car would shut down/stall and stop. In your video you tell us, no matter what gear you're on just press on the clutch at 1000rpm when slowing down to prevent suddenly stopping the car. Now can you tell me how can I keep track of the right time to press on the clutch with the help of the speedometer or anything else. Thank you. Your videos are really helpful.
Try to listen to the car, it won't stall immediately, it will struggle and warn you first. With practise you'll get better at knowing what sound the engine makes before it struggles.
One point I find..funny, I guess, is how much you stress having to rely solely on the brakes as a bad thing. Certainly, I can agree that it's not the best thing in the world. But I find this funny, because I live here in the USA where most cars are automatics. Which means they mostly don't have engine braking and so you do rely solely on the brakes to slow you down downhill. And in some cars, when you put it in drive it wants to start moving forward by itself. You actually have to press the brake to keep the car from moving forward. So in a way, the engine might actually be working against you when trying to slow down downhill.
The on-demand engine braking that manual transmissions offer is actually something that I really quite enjoy as a driver, so it's a bit weird that automatics don't have that. (Or at least I've never been in one that does, except for trucks set to tow/haul mode).
Automatics also provide engine braking at higher speeds.
In this video you said once you take your foot off the break the car will start moving again. I want to know how to stop car completely in front of pedestrian crossing 🚸? Slow down, put gear to neutral and then come of clutch and then slowly come of break? Will that stop the car?
And what if I want to change gear to 1? And still come off break? Is holding clutch enough to keep the car steady without moving? I can't sleep until I know this.
When stopping at a zebra crossing I recommend holding the brake down and going to neutral until it's safe to get going.

At 5.29 when you slowed down did you select 2nd gear to down gear to slow down or did you select 1st gear then 2nd gear in a sequence before you carry on the driving...explain that step for me.....or is it a thing that you were slowing down with 2 gear been selected already and you just hold down the clutch and break and it still allowed you to drive off with 2nd gear with out closing off I dont get it
In the video I slowed down, at the same time as braking I went to down to 2nd gear from 3rd and lifted the clutch back up again as I didn't want to stop. If I wanted to stop I would have kept the clutch down and I wouldn't have changed down to 2nd, I would have gone straight to 1st from third as I stopped so that I was ready to go.
Can i ask something. How about a short distance of downhill slope In the parkinglot basement is it ok to use just break but slowly?
At very low speeds I would have the clutch down and be braking (less than 5mph). Above 5mph I would try and keep the clutch up for added control.
Our road here downhill is very steep. Every time I try to downgear (3rd to 2nd) my car engine turns off, am I doing something wrong? Should I change on the very end of the downhill? I was pressing the clutch full already. Thanks.
How fast are you lifting up the clutch in this situation? The key to shifting down to 2nd when you may be going too fast downhill for it to be smooth is to reach the bite point and slowly and smoothly lift up the clutch. If you repeated this action the same way on a flat road shifting down to 2nd, your car would start engine braking and you would slow down without jerking the car back.
What about temporary traffic lights and the road is busy? If traffic and guys close won’t I keep my clutch down and brake too
The same applies as the video. The reason you're slowing down doesn't matter.
Hi! I hope you can answer this quickly. I have my driving exam in four days and usually all driving exams in my city take the same route. There is this kinda Y uphill street ( i hope i can explain this well eng is not my first language) so, the route is up that hill (down line of the Y) then i go right and make u turn. Now when i finish u turn im exactly in the middle of the Y (the entire thing is downhill) and i ahvee to stop, and when i make sure that i can go back (from the side i came from, again down line on letter Y) i don't know what to do. From my pov i have to go left so im honding my both break and clutch, now i slowly release the break and the car goes down and im still holding my clutch all the way down. Idk what to do next. I know that at some point i have to release the clutch ( my instructor mentioned something about holding it on 10) but i still don't know what to do with my legs. Please help. The hill is also very narrow so there is also a fear of car going too fast if i relese the clutch idk please help me
I think you're asking how to move away downhill, I would release the brake and let the hill start the car moving then lift the clutch up with some gas to continue.
One thing I am curious as a learner is the kind of shoes one needs to use when learning manual? I see many videos and the type of shoes most people use are quite thin. Is this the norm or just because is easier to feel the clutch? Or it does not matter once you learn? I usually wear sneakers or trainers with thick soles so I got myself a cheap generic type of shoes that are similar to Vans shoes because they have thin soles.
You can drive barefoot or in boots. If you can feel the pedals fine and have space for a full press/depress then jr good too go
I thought braking without pressing the clutch fully would cause the engine to wear down or cause problems. How come braking while in gear doesn't affect the car?
You only need to press the clutch down when the engine speed is around 1000rpm. If it's higher than that the engine will actually help you slow down and give you more control. This video should help.
Does he really say to press the brake pedal while going downhill all the time unless we want to accelerate again? I've heard this makes the brakes hot and they might fail. Also, the bus drivers driving me to work every day press and release the brake pedals repeatedly when going downhill?

This was really helpful! When I press the clutch, the car ends up speeding because the road slopes downhill and I have to brake really sharply. I have a question - if I'm at a junction, and I press the clutch down accidentally because I thought I would have to stop - but there's no cars coming and my car hasn't completely stopped yet - do I still have to find the biting point and raise it slowly?
Thank you. Yes, always bring the clutch up carefully. If you get really skilled with rev matching you can come off the clutch quickly but that takes a lot of practise and perseverance.
as you have braked sharply it may depend on how much you have slowed and what gear you are in. From your wording ( i will assume 2nd just because i'm going to assume you are in 2nd) 2nd gear could be too higher gear and you may need first. If the car judders when you bring the clutch back up, then you may well have needed 1st or 1 below what ever you were in.
if the car is is still moving, you can bring the clutch up slowly and keep the car moving by pressing the gas pedal as needed.
My instructor tells me to slam the clutch fast as possible when shifting,but occasionally theres a weird noise when i go slightly slower.Why is that?

That's true but your brakes may overheat on steep hills without the engine keeping you slow. Also, you won't be ready to accelerate when you eventually need to.
There's engine brakes dude. It's muchmuchmuch better to stick it in second gear as it has speed limit that doesnt go any faster. which means the use of brake is minimal.. Neutral however is like free coasting and you know you will accelerate with no limits that you eventually have to brake. evrytiem. in second gear top speed is hardlimited and it cant go any higher no matter how steep the road is
I have to go down a steep hill to get inside a parking lot and the hill is also kinda tight so I gotta go very slow/stop cause of cars coming out as well, how do I manage the clutch in this case? break first and clutch when needed or clutch and break from the start considering i gotta break a lot from the very start due to the steepness
I would keep the clutch up as much as possible and push it down when needed to prevent the engine struggling.

Downhill it should work well.
Which gear is best for steep downhill?
A gear or a two lower than normal. The steeper the hill, the higher you want the revs. Down mountain roads I often stay at 4000rpm+ for added engine braking to prevent the brakes from overheating. It's noisy but it's much better for your car.
I just wana know when im shifting to lower gear down hill how can i manage to press the clutch while shifting while making sure i dont speed up due to pressed clutch?
You can use the brake at the same time as shifting down to try and keep you slow.
