I'm a flute player. So often at larger gigs, I've been offered an SM57. That diddy Sennheiser mike would appear to be a very portable and suitable alternative for a flute, especially if it has a slightly wider angle of pickup. SM57s do force me to keep my head very still in one spot for consistency. I must admit, we fluteys do like to move around a bit, and you have to keep your air stream out of the pickup path, or it becomes blowfully obvious!
Where the Kompakt really stands out for me is how it captures the top notes of your inversions in the second sound sample, especially in the second mic position. Adding the 57 detracts from the harmonic richness to my ears. For decades of noisy room live gigs, I've simply hung a 609 (no, not a 906) against the grill cloth and not really given it much thought. Maybe I should give it some thought.
Great to see Sennheiser offering a "reasonable priced" top notch mic for the not so wealthy amateur world You did a lot to make this comparison a "real" one ... love the idea to use this sled contraption
I love that the Kompakt DOESN'T sound like the big one because it sounds fatter and punchier like a vintage 421! This is quite high on the list to send to Santa this week!
TheRecordingGeek should add some standard usage for MD421: Toms, Snare, Trumpet, Altosax, Tenorsax, Trombone, Baritonsax, Congas, Timbales, Bongos, Strings ...
Not a fan of the Kompakt as I hear much of the same tone as the 906 in it. I find the 906 way easier to mic up the cab with. The Kompakt has this slight "Kerrckkk" back of the teeth sound to it too 😂 It will suit many speaker types though.

I’ve never mic’d up a flute but what you’re saying here makes sense.
