  • Lead Semi wadcutter hollow points in .38 Special+P VS .44 Special! The .38 Special is famously called the "FBI Load", the "Chicago Load" and the "Dallas Load" as it was known for it's exceptional "stopping power". I am comparing this round to the .44 Special loaded hot with the same style of bullet.
    The .38 Special is a 158 gr LSWCHP rated at 1,000 FPS from a 1.875" barrel and the .44 Special is a 190 gr LSWCHP rated at 1,150 FPS (unknown barrel length). Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.co...

    I get a lot of the same question, so here's my answer. NO, the recoil with this .38 Special+P was not as high as .357 Magnum, not even close. In fact, it was a lot closer to normal .38 Special ammo than anything, which is also in line with what a Glock 19 9mm is for felt recoil. This is because this revolver is about 40 OZ, which soaks up the recoil. I have fired this round in my 11 OZ J-frame before, and in that the recoil is pretty much on par with the felt recoil of .357 Magnum in my 20 OZ Taurus 605.
    So I will reiterate the same information I stated in the video again in an understandable way; This round's internal ballistics are that of a .38 Special+P round, but because there is less bore drag because the bullet is soft lead, this creates exterior ballistics closer to .357 Magnum. It's a simple concept, but a lot of people still seem to struggle understanding it.

      Gun Sam awesome video. And that is a very good point -- lead has less drag hence higher velocity. Its almost as if the old school guys knew what they were doing. That being said, I'm concerned about lead exposure. What is your view on the risks? Do you like the all copper bullets? What is your view on lead vs. copper for both effectiveness and exposure for frequent shooters?

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  3 года назад +4

      @@alecswann7234 lead is a very heavy element, which means even airborne smoke isn't going to harm you, as long as you shoot in a well ventilated area. Wash your hands after touching the ammo or shooting and you will be fine.

    • @W1ldt1m
      @W1ldt1m 3 года назад

      That's also why so many people dismiss .38 special as too weak.

    • @W1ldt1m
      @W1ldt1m 3 года назад +4

      @@alecswann7234 lead exposure from store bought ammo is minimal at best. Reloaders and especially those who cast their own lead bullets face a much higher risk. Even this though is significantly mitigated by using proper procedure. Competitive shooters who reload and burn a thousand rounds a week might eventually show elevated lead levels but for us mere mortals hand washing and not licking ammo keeps getting s safe.

    .44 Special is such a great and misunderstood cartridge. It can drive a 250 grain Keith 1000 fps while staying within the very mild 15,500 psi SAAMI spec. The.38 Special Buffalo Bore was really impressive. Almost like a mid range.357 hand load.

    I live in the middle of nowhere in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I buy the same Buffalo Bore Bullets in .357 Mag., .44 Mag., for my revolvers and recently bought a 100 rounds of .45 ACP for my 1911. My neck of the woods has black bears, wolves and recently confirmed by the Michigan DNR, cougars. I have seen the same bear for about 8 years. I have seen dozens of wolf tracks and in February I saw a set of cougar tracks about 500 yards from my house. I have a German Shepherd and I have had wolves in the yard in the Winter quite often. Definitely train with these very powerful bullets before relying on self defense. Yes, they are more expensive than the same rounds of Winchester White Box, or something similar. This is especially important if you are carrying a semi-auto.

    Wheel guns were the norm when I started in law enforcement, and I carried an N frame Smith in .44 Special, and a Charter Arms Bulldog magnaport custom backpacker as a back up. I carried CCI Lawman 200 gainers that duplicated the .45 flying ashtray profile, and hardness. They were softer, and typically opened up to .60 cal. or better, while shedding a little weight. In those days, we had to shoot out to the 50 yard line prone, and kneeling. The .44 would put them all in a hand span out to that distance. One of the most accurate rounds, and guns I ever carried. Carried the original flat nosed hydra-shocks in the Charter, and the wound channel they left was just plain ugly, and nasty. Miss those old CCI Lawman rounds.

    I was just on Buffalo Bore's website looking at this .44 Special ammunition, so a couple of things; first is a warning against use in a Charter Arms Bulldog, so here is that:
    "This ammunition is for use in ALL 44 SPL and 44 MAG. firearms except for the Charter Arms Bull Dog. No, this ammo won't blow up your Bull Dog, but if you shoot more than a few hundred rounds of this ammo in a Bull Dog, the gun will get looser than it already was, will go out of "time" and stop working."
    The next is the real world velocity ratings:
    ➤ 1156 fps - Ruger Super Blackhawk, 5.5-inch barrel
    ➤ 1098 fps - S&W MT Gun, 4-Inch barrel
    ➤ 1046 fps - S&W mod. 696, 3-inch barrel

While it's common that one fires .38 Special from .357 Magnum revolvers and .44 Special from .44 Magnum revolvers I've heard multiple times that while you can do it, it could do some damage (not by pressure) but cause the unsupported distance till the bullet enters the cone/barrel is longer. They always seem to be dead on if not slightly better. Looks like that would be some good carry ammo for my S&W 637, probably not the most pleasant to shoot though.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  3 года назад +2

      The issue is that big ammo manufactures pretty much never use a gun for ballistic testing. They use interchangeable barrel/chambers things. Buffalo Bore simply uses normal guns, which obviously is going to about be what a consumer would get.

    Good comparison (and surprisingly good expansion). Takes me back. Dad used to cast and load Lyman 358156 back in the late 50’s through 60’s. I fooled with it and other SWCHP rounds in the 70’s and 80’s. Still keep a few around. I found myself wanting to calculate Cooper’s “Short Form” (his simplification of Hatcher’s formula for stopping power) on those rounds. In the days before modern expanding handgun bullets, these SWCHP rounds were the best available, and they were pretty good. 👍

    Think Taurus 856 with 6 rounds of 38spl vs a Charter Arms Bulldog in 44spl, which only holds 5. They're both of comparable weight (around 20-22oz) if comparing to the steel frame 856. Both are of comparable price, right in the 350-400$ range (or so).

    Use them there Buffalo Bores to give the thugs their last blast before sending them on to eternity. Any bullet going at 800fps is =to 500mph so these bullets are roaring! I still think revolvers are way more deadly with the right bullets than any wonder nine. Thanks for the good work.

    • @GunSam

      Thanks. You are correct. 9mm's take more energy to do what a lesser energy revolver bullet can do, because the extra energy does nothing but expand what the wide HP revolver round expanded with less energy. Now when you make the energy equal, the revolver round is instantly more effective.

    Couple of things to keep in mind: JMB's original load for 45acp was one that approximated the .44 Special [200gr @ 900fps; often called a "softball load" today in reloading circles] but the US Army wanted one that was closer to the 45LC [255gr @ 800fps] for killing horses [horse cavalry was still a thing] so he split the difference w/ the classic 45acp hardball load of 235gr @ 825fps. Also, in WW1 the Brits were looking to reduce the caliber of their handguns from the grand old doyen .455 to a .38; they wound up with a bunch of S&W revolvers in .38S&W [NB: *NOT* .38S&W Special, but the older, weaker, shorter cased .38 S&W!] due to the exigencies of WW1 and buying guns needed yesterday from US makers. The Brits wound up developing a 200gr bullet for it that was lobbed @ ~600fps, if memory serves. They called it "the mankiller" and it worked well enough that they carried it in service thru WW2. This in fact is the gun & load that M wants Bond to start using in place of his ludicrous .25acp Berretta in the original novel where Bond is told that he must upgrade to a real gun & accepts the PPK in .32acp which hit [according to Q] "Like a brick thru a plate glass window." I can only imagine that was in comparison to the .25acp Bond was used to in a hideout gun, which could be stopped by a book in someone's pocket [actually seen; saved the grandfather of a friend's life many decades before he was born, and he had the book from grand-dad...]

    Interesting.
    Just a couple of comments from a handloader's perspective.
    Lead bullets tend to register HIGHER chamber pressures with the same loadings as jacketed bullets. The common thought is lead is slicker and more malleable than a typical lead-core jacketed bullet, but the lead bullet forms better to the barrel and contains more of the pressure behind the bullet.
    190 grains is a rather light bullet in 44 (.429" really) caliber. Buffalo Bore is known for 'stout' loadings, but my favored load for .44 Special is a 255 flat lead bullet about 800 fps. (S&W 44 Hand Ejector, 4.5 inch barrel.)
    The .38 Special loading might be more 'agreeable' with many shooters. Surely the revolver - a K frame or J frame size - would be easier to conceal.

    This is great ammo , this type bullet works well on the low end also . A slower more common 38 SWHP would not use a gas check . They expand easy & if they don't , some kind of wad cutter works well .

    • @filianablanxart8305
      @filianablanxart8305 2 года назад +1

      With the " normal " swaged SWCHP , it's a delicate balancing act between expansion and customer complaints of barrel leading . A Cast HP with GC gives more latitude for ideal expansion w/o leading . But is much slower to make , and hence more expensive .
      FWIW , it is openly stated by both parties that BB uses the Rim Rock bullets for these two loads .

    • @danoneill2846
      @danoneill2846 7 месяцев назад +1

      When they say soft cast , there is a large area between pure lead & hard cast . I would say hardness #10 , I call med cast , works well , holds together , low leading if the rest is correct .@@filianablanxart8305

    .44 spl is a caliber that just doesn't get a lot of love and there are a very limited number of guns chambered in that which would work for concealed carry. The Charter Arms Bulldog is the only .44 snubbie I am familiar with, and it is quite snappy with conventional loads. If I were carrying it, I'd probably just load it with wadcutters. My guess is that a .44 wadcutter would actually deliver very respectable stopping power.

    Good video. This just shows that the 38 Special is still a very good defense round equal to a 9mm in a modern revolver with good ammo. The right bullet with the right powder to take advantage of the increased case volume just works in the 38 Special. As for the 44 Special, no one ever called a 45acp a poor stopper and the performance of those Buffalo Bore 44 Special rounds show better performance than the most 45acp. I've done similar tests and came out with about the same results but the ammo was off my loading bench. It should be noted that these tests were performed with firearms with 4" barrels, most ammo testing for the auto loadings use 5" barrels or longer, it makes a huge difference especially in a 9mm.

    This was a really nice comparison video. Back in the day I carried a Charter Arms .44 spl snubbie over my S&W .38 spl J frame thinking if I only get 5 rounds I want as much power as I can get. However now days the .38 +P really skew that philosophy. So it really is a benefit to the shooting community to have you doing what you do. So thank you. The saddest part is that in today’s society I can’t feel comfortable with just 5 rounds anymore. For what it takes to holster up I’d just as soon carry my Glock 19 as I would carry my snubbies. On a side note I went to Buffalo Bore to check out this ammo and I read a note they have for customers to read. Have you seen that? Did it seem like a whiny little rant to you? It did to me. I mean I get it, but it makes me second-guess wanting to order from them because much like the Federal ammo video I watched with the owner complaining I just find such interactions inappropriate as hell for a business to do.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  3 года назад

      Thanks. If we talk .38 VS .44, it's sort of like 9mm VS .45 in the sense that energy is not everything, and at the end of the day the .44 should in all scenarios, make larger holes, therefor it is theoretically more effective. Yeah I have seen their note. But, even though it might look whiny, I sometimes even in what I do appear to be whiny with my pinned comments. So, from my perspective, they probably are justified in whatever they wrote. People seeing them as whiny probably think two or three people complained, but I assure you if they felt the need to make that note, there was probably hundreds if not thousands of the same damn wrong comment, which they are exhausted from answering the same thing over, and over, and over, and over again all day long. So, the "pinned' something.
