This bowl-neck lute played with a bow is is an old Turkic stringed instrument and called Kobys or Kylkobyz in Kazakhstan. The Kyrgyz variant, for example, is called the kyl-kyyak.
The Kobys is the oldest string instrument in the world and, according to a German scientist, it spread beyond the borders of the nomadic area of Central Asia and became the prototype of all European string instruments.
(Turkic means: The Turkic peoples are a collection of ethnic groups from Central, East, North and West Asia as well as parts of Europe and North Africa who speak Turkic languages.)
A legend about Kobyz says that this instrument was created by the great steppe narrator Korkyt-Ata, who lived in the 10th century and that the tool is charged with magical and even mystical properties and sounds like animal voices. In addition, the Kazakh people believed that the spirits of their ancestors spoke to them through this music.
The old outlook and piety towards their instruments and music was constantly preserved in traditional Kazakh society and ensured the highest spiritual level of musical art and a special respectful attitude towards musical instruments. Simple people, for example, did not dare to touch the shaman's Kobyz. It is said: The balance between the courses of life and death on earth can be maintained by playing the Kobyz.

He is so charismatic that you can't help but fall in love with him. Don't worry, the more you learn about him the more engrossed you'll become. I love being one of his "dears".
It is completely out of the ordinary how Dimash Qudaibergen manages to convey extremely different emotions by singing almost exactly the same lyrics but using a different dynamic, a different key, a different timbre and different sound production techniques! He begins with the shyness and doubt of a stranger who enters a territory totally foreign to him (when he plays in the piano mode and with sounds surrounded by breath), moves on to the desire to try his strength to achieve a new beginning in life (then when he achieves that magnificent passage through the whole spectrum of his vocal rank using very different techniques of singing on each register) and reaches the end to have the power of the winning hero who not only tried, not only fought but finally defeated (when he shows us the power of his belting and that high and super long note of 20 seconds)! I only scored 3 moments, but they were more because between the choruses there were 2 slightly different moments of storytelling, but both in his register below the bass-baritone and there was another chorus (in total there were 4 choruses and two slightly more parts of the story, all in different dynamics, different keys and very different vocal techniques performed impeccably from a technical point of view, but also with strong emotional effects in the sense of impressive and maximum effect on the audience that practically listened to the whole song almost hypnotized)! For me it was the perfect song of the moment and it was a sublime demonstration of how much Dimash Qudaibergen can still progress even though he is already far beyond his contemporaries ! In this song he covered from C2 to F6 !
When the "little boy" came up I knew some overprotective Dears would get mad. Don't let them spoil your enjoyment, please, most of us are very loving (just more quiet ;) )

My hobby this year has been watching new people discover Dimash. Clearly you've been Dimashed! Welcome to the 'Dears', he has so many great songs and styles of singing, he's a unicorn! Once in a lifetime singer and he's just 27. I'd start with his performances on The SInger in 2017 that made him famous, then you can appreciate how well he is still progressing - which is scary considering how talented and hardworking he already is! My favourite songs include Olympico, My Love, Samaltau, Ave Maria, Fly Away too (which is on the Billboard charts, so clearly the West is discovering him at last!) Make sure you read the story background to songs like Samltau and Ikinade as it adds to the emotion and power of his performances. Best singer in the world? I think so. And such a nice guy too, perfect.

The more you will hear and see from him the bigger will be your surprise, admiration and head down for his artistic skills and versatility. Also check out his folk songs like 'daididau', samaltau' and his more poppy songs like give me your love' and 'be with me'. 'Know vocalize' is one of my favorites. Igor Krutoy, music titan in Russia (billionaire) and a famous composer who came out of retirement to write songs for Dimash. The maestro and Dimash have been working together from time to time since 2018 and have a father-son relationship.
And Dimash said also in an interview about th e collaboration with Igor Krutoy that it is important to him that the songs are written in such a way that there is room for variations ... so every performance of a song is a surprise and every Dear can choose his favorite presentation... I can not decide.

Plus he is so humble and so appreciative of his fans that it makes you love him more. Ave Maria by Dimash is one you must hear. It is not the Ave Maria we all know but it was written for him by Igor Krutoy who you will find with Dimash on many many performances, such as Stranger. Ave Maria has no lyrics, just his vocalize. It is hauntingly beautiful, absolutely angelic and mesmerizing.

There is no way, you could imagine that you are important for us. Your well being. If you discovered Dimash a year ago, you would have 50-100K views. Today, there are thousands out there, who are reacting to him, and with most of them, Dears get disappointed. Dimash premiered his newest song "Stranger" on August 19, 2021, during his performance at the annual New Wave music competition in Sochi, Russia. He once again performed with Igor Krotoy on the piano and introduced Olzhas Qurmanbeck on the kobyz. Igor Krutoy composed the music, American poetess Sharon Vaughn wrote the lyrics, and Dimitris Kontopoulos (Greece) and Yerlan Bekchurin (Kazakhstan) did the arrangement.
Igor Krutoy is quoted as saying that “it was Dimash’s talent that inspired me to write this song, his immense vocal abilities and his desire to sing for a large international audience. Franky, I don’t see anyone else who could perform this piece in such a way.”
When Dimash first listened to the melody of "Stranger" he felt that the addition of a kobyz to the musical arrangement would give the song a unique, yet very fitting sound. Thus, the kobyz made its debut at the New Wave Hall at the Sochi Olympic Park, and what a great choice indeed. It is a beautiful sounding instrument that seems to underscore the song’s deep meaning. This wasn’t the first time that Dimash has featured Olzhas Qurmanbeck playing the kobyz. You can also enjoy him in a few of Dimash’s other performances such as Qairan Elim (official music video) and Samaltau (2020 Tokyo Jazz Festival).
This is an amazing performance, one of, if not the best to date, in my humble opinion. Dimash traverses almost 5 octaves (C2-F6) in this performance. That stunning last note is a 19.7-second full mixed voice belt in F#5.
The kobyz is a very old, traditional, and sacred instrument in Kazakhstan. The kobyz or kyl kobyz is the most ancient bowed instrument on earth, widespread among the Turks, Kazakhs, Karakalpaks, Bashkirs, and Tatars. It became the basis for most of today’s bowed instruments around the world, including European instruments such as violin, viola, cello, and contrabass. The Kyrgyz variant is called kyl kayak.
The instrument is carved from a single piece of wood (typically apricot) or juniper (arsha), maple, pine tree, or birch. The instrument consists of three parts: head (bas), middle (base is keude), and lower part (ayak) and usually measures 60-70 cm. It has two strings made from horsetail hair; one to provide melody and the other resonance. The bow is shaped like an archer’s bow, and its string is tied to both ends of the bent branch and affixed with strong threads of camel wool.
The New Wave Music competition started in 2002, and for nearly two decades now has been one of the most iconic music events in Russia and other parts of the world. It is an international contest for young performers of popular music. It was founded by Russian composer, performer, and music producer Igor Krutoy (seen here playing the piano) and Latvian pianist and composer Raimonds Pauls. Russian superstar Alla Pugacheva eventually joined as one of the show’s organizers. The contest usually lasts for six days: 3 contest days, 2 special event days, and the final day when the contest's results are announced and a final concert is performed. The television audience of the New Wave music competition numbers more than 200 million people. In 2018, Dimash debuted as a guest performer, performing his now legendary rendition of “Sinful Passion”. This year (2021) Dimash took part as a guest performer, as well as a judge. In this year’s finale, 11 participants from 9 countries will compete for the grand prize.

At this same event Dimash sang two other songs, each very different from Stranger. The next up was Fly Away and the third was Ave Maria. To listen to/watch all three in a row shows the incredible versatility of this artist. He is more than outside the box … a box has not been created that can hold Dimash’s creativity and talent. ♥️☮️🎶🇰🇿🦅🇺🇸

Just a comment because a lot of people expect something different--the Ave Maria Dimash sings is not the Schubert version so many people are familiar with, but instead a piece that was written specifically for Dimash by Igor Krutoy (the man at the piano in these pieces.) Krutoy is a well-known Russian composer who came out of retirement to write pieces specifically for Dimash.
But even people who were expecting to hear the Schubert Ave Maria and seem a little disappointed at the beginning end up transported by the beauty of Dimash' version.

I'm so happy you discovered Dimash. Listening to Dimash cuts COVID recovery time in half. Dimash did a closing soundtrack for the movie Creators: The Beginning, and it's called Across Endless Dimensions. I encourage you to react to it. Sinful Passion is fantastic, and for raw passion, I recommend Love Is Like A Dream. For pure vocals with no words, Know (Vocalise). There are many more, but there's only so much space to type. Also he is a master of musical theatre, he has studied this along with Classical and Contemporary music for many years. I heard him say recently in an interview that his musical education is still ongoing and will probably never end! Igor Krutoi is a great composer and we have to thank him for his collaboration with Dimash, he retired but after hearing him singing he returned to compose, finally he found a performer with more than 7 octaves range so he can use the whole piano keyboard with only one singer. Stay safe

he does have a sweet boyish face. On RUclips he just did an Instagram "chat" with fans. Dimash RARELY gives an interview....1 every 3 or 4 years. But he said "I miss you Dears, and I know you miss me since I can not come to you in concerts so I wanted to take time to talk with you" There is a version with Eng Subs. He is 27 and still has a boyish quality....such sweet, kind youth.....so you were spot on.......but Dears can be super protective.....:) STRANGER is one of his GREATEST vocal achievements and demonstrations of his brilliance.
