First Attempt at a PC Engine DUO-R RGB Mod | Nice

- These things are beautiful! I've never got my hands on one before and I jumped at the chance to give it a good old RGB video upgrade.
Standard, the NEC Duo-R outputs wishy-washy composite, so let's put a Video Amplifier in there, grab the RGB signals and output through DIN-8 SCART.
Sounds easy enough. 😬
Hope you enjoy!
Steve
PS. I'm not an expert in repairs at all. I do this for fun, and it may not be the best or safest way to go about repairing broken stuff. I'm pretty good at melting plastic though. Please don't copy me - I'm an idiot.

Stupid game 😬
🤣
Nice video's mate, where did you get your desoldering gun?
Not a stupid game - one of the best ever made in its entire series.....
This is what I come here for.
Its one of the best in its whole series though?
I think your kitty is out of control Steve 🤣
🤣🤣🤣 definitely mate.
Nice work Steve! 👌
Thanks Vince! 👍
I've watched a few fix it videos now, like My mate Vince and Retro tech repairs, But I always seem to find myself coning back here to watch you videos. I think it's for the comedic side, don't get me wrong I stay till the end to see if you can fix it, also love the singing atvthe ends excellent..
Keep up the good work and more regular videos please 🙏 👍
Thanks Devilboy, really appreciate that! 🤩👍
Steve is a natural born entertainer.....i only leave the room when i have to pause to goto the "loo".
There's something so soothing about watching you solder components
Great fix. Even greater cover of wicked game! Well done, dude!
Steve playing rondo of blood was something i never expected to happen
JA! Love scratches on the left hand!
I'm sorry, maybe your cat doesn't love you as much as we do 😁
Keep up the awesome work!
🤣🤣 no, it definitely doesn't 😻
Those things are rare as hen's teeth in UK. Never even see one in real life. You are very good at soldering I wish I had your skill.
Thank you Barry! It's the first time I've ever seen one, and I've fallen in love with it. Such a beautiful device! 😍
use the force Steve!
😁
Steve...I am so glad I found your channel. you are a genius.
Nice!
That ending song is a banger.
Love your videos mate, not afraid to take the piss outtta yourself, the world needs more of this. 😀
the song at the end is great lol
The moment you said you'd take a photo of the back of the board for reference I thought "I wonder if he'll remember it's gonna be flipped?". Bang. 5 seconds later...
Great singing at the end!
Awesome job. And we were treated to a lovely song at the end. Wonderful!
🤣 thanks Mike! 😁
The song at the end was great. You should sing more.
Great video. I like how you include your mistakes. Helps to understand things better
Maybe my favorite subscription in quite a while.
This is like AMSR at its best, a very relaxing watch.
Looks like a certain cat had some fun.
I new nothing about circuit boards I do now after binge watching yr channel fairplay your good on the tools👍🏻
Good lord, I've been binge-watching your vids for like 4 days now and well... I'm hooked. I work in a lab soldering components and prototype HW all day long.... then I come home and watch your vids. sigh.. Its me, isn't it?
Loving the music Steve
Someone's been playing with his kitty I recognize those wounds on your hands i've had a few myself over the yrs 🤣
I always wanted to get a TG16 with Turbo CD or Turbo Duo, but never did. I did purchase a Turbo Xpress at a pawn shop less than a year after it was released in the US for $80 (they had no idea what it was) and loved it.
Great cover!
Thanks Jakub! 😊
Great video as always 😊😊😊
Thanks Froz! 👍
Great job your soldering skills are excellent and that was a really cool idea to run the ground and the positive off that ship instead of from the cap awesome
Thanks William! Really pleased with how this one turned out 👍
Does anyone else feel disrespected by the fact he didn't use red green and blue wires for the rgb or is it just me anyways love the content (especially voice-over Steve) keep it up
done many of mods to these over the years, great mod
Thanks Beaps. They seem to be great systems. Got a couple of GT handhelds coming to me soon. Can't wait to have a crack at those!
The ending singing was Epic. LOL!
You do great work my friend but a suggestion.... You need to regularly clean off your solder tip... you are using a dirty iron and it will contaminate the connection.. clean often.... Great stuff.
I really missed that nice cow in your videos!
Thanks, Steve. Enjoyable once again.
Thanks Stuart! 👍
I have no idea about all the gaming devices you fix. Had to google this one. Love your videos tho. Enjoyed the song at the end too.
It's a pleasure to find your channel from a person we all know😊.. watching this made me want to get on fleebay and buy a broken hero session 4..
Love the cat scratch Steve. And your vids are super fab
awsome soldering skills
Pleasure to watch and improvement in all departments like the singing and the ambience LOL, but soldering is near perfect👏
Thanks M m! 👍
MY GOD!!! HAVE YOU BEEN FIGHTING A CAT, DUUUUUDE? Love you, Mate!!!
I love Castlevania: Rondo of Blood~
Yeah, it's an awesome game! 👌
Nice work once again Steve, but the singing is still my favourite part.
🤣 thanks Les! 👍
Great job mate 👏🏻
Cheers mate 👍
i wish i knew u dude, uve got a great personality
Fan of chris isaak here 👋🏻 well sang

Hmmmm
Me: Moooooooo
Chris Issak has nothing on my man Steve. Wicked game indeed!
Honestly, at this point, I'm just here for the end-screen karaoke. Good work Dave erm I mean Steve.👌
🤣🤣🤣 thanks BeoGeek!
That must be one hell of a cat....
Another good fix there Steve and something i have not seen before well not this particular model of PC Engine - Nice 1 mate 👍
Thanks Chris! Lovely machines these things 👌
Can I make a suggestion?
Give the wire ends a twist before you tin them? They wont fray if you do that and it makes for a cleaner joint. :)
I like the song hahaha, nice one Steve!!!! You made my day!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
🤣 thanks Tony! 👍
Steve, when you said ‘strap on’ - did you mean buckle up? 😂
😁 yeah, probably! 🤣 🤣
Embracing your inner Voultar I see 😂
Absolutely, Dave! 🤣🤣
Dont know why but during the whole video I had the feelng of being in some classy bar with a Martini in my hand... Isnt that wierd!
nice neat job m8,impressed
Thanks Preddy, much appreciated 👍
Wicked!!!!! ! (game) 😁 Neat job, Steve! A great mod and a great song! And the epoxyed bug and the active claws cat 🐱! Very, very nice! I like it! 😁😁😁
🤣🤣 thanks Pedro! 👍
Nice
Beautiful work!! I love the outro!!
Get some thinner solder like .4mm or so. The thick stuff really blobs it on those smd pads
Thanks James, I think I have some. The one I used was 0.7 I think, so it wasn't too bad 👍
Came for the mod, stayed for the outro songs.
🤣🤣 thanks Adrian!
I like your electronic but can’t get into these games oh well keep your videos coming 👍👏👏
1st class video to watch thank you take care kind regards from me kenneth🥶
Heck yea!
nice
😁
That's a hand of a cat owner
I see your cat loves you! LOL
Nice work!
Thanks Josh! 👍
Watching older video... so... no "Mooo" for you. :)
Nice work !
Just bought mine from Doujindance, the rgb is a game changer !
Now i can compare the accuracy of my personal pc engine emulator with the real hardware :)
And how was the comparison?
@@Goldenskidmk Almost 99% of pc engine games are correctly working.
Some of them, wich use mid scanlines effects (like cadash), have some background glitches.
Something should be wrong with the position of the BXR/BYR and/or RCR counters and timings 🤔
NICEEEE....
😁 thanks OB1!
I guess you’ve been in a fight with your new car…..and it won ;) …. Nice…
🤣 yeah, it always wins! 😻
Thanks for sharing this ❤
Did Dave mess up your hand?
Very nice! the value of these systems has sadly never been low, even a faulty unit (because they almost always need their capacitors replacing) tend to still be expensive so I don't think I'd want to mess with modding one too much, thankfully recapping them is no more challenging than any other system once you're confidant with surface mount capacitors.
Thanks Sparks. Yeah, they are still really expensive, so I was a bit nervous working on this one. I made sure that anything I did was reversible so that it can be put back factory if needs be! 👍
Where can I buy that Stupid Game song haha
Lovely mod and so tidy, well done especially for your 1st attempt
Thanks Tony! 😁 yeah, I was pleased with how it turned out. 👍
Great job mate 👍 👏 so enjoy your videos 📹 👍 please keep them coming 🙏 and here to help get your videos 📹 😉 out to everyone to enjoy 😉 😀 cheers 🍻 mate 👍 😀
Cheers Roger! 👍
0:26 - have a fight with the cat mate?
The outro 😂
New video Steve when is it dropping I need my fix
😁 I usually upload 5pm GMT every Saturday. So, only 16 and a bit hours to go 😊
The scratches on your hand. Do you have a kitten? Only asking as mine are very similar at the moment! Love your channel, currently getting into electronic repairs. Have you considered making some "Beginners guide" videos? Stuff like Need for flux, Soldering and Volt meter use?
I've never had a PC Engine (or TurboGrafx-16, which... I can't decide if that's a better name or not XD) but I've been really curious for the past year or so to get my hands on one. Good looking mod, bud!
Yeah, both names are pretty cool. Such a shame that these things never made it out of the US and Japan. I would have loved to have owned one of these as a child! Nice to get my hands on one finally though! 👍
Wii u is good for the retro stuff like really good it's about all it's good for though
There are quite a few on US eBay, but in great shape will set you back between $400-800. Then you have the eBay fishers asking $1000+..
steve is the bob ross of electrical repair. stupid game. 🤣
I read the title and was expecting the console to end up filled with coloured flashing lights lol. Why is the big bag of components, way too big for a tiny circuit board, a few caps, resistors and some coloured wire? I really fancy a de-soldering gun.
Yeah, it was only a big bag because I had to buy 10 of everything! That desoldering gun is amazing. Makes life so much easier.
Good lord... up until you showed the display output, I thought you were going to desecrate the poor console with... the other kind of RGB mod.
RIP RGB (Ruth Gator Binsberg)
Great video Steve? Find you better fixing things then my mate Vince at least you don't f it up?
😬 thanks Grave H! I definitely do mess up sometimes! 😊
This is a very interesting compliment to your repair videos.
Way to go with new and compelling content.
Riveting, a real page-turner, etc...
-Entertainment Weekly
Also, populating that lil board all by yourself! You are a horn-dog. So much energy and baby skills. I can't even populate a sea monkey tank*
*sea monkies were marketed by a white supremacist. That's why comic books stopped advertising them. He was practicing sea monkey segregation by separating all the colored sea monkeys from the transparent monkeys. Imagine a different timeline where sea monkeys weren't sold by a racist: we would have had red, blue, orange, brown, purple sea monkeys! They would have been slightly less crap! Amazing!
Being a PC enthusiast, I thought you were going to add RGB lighting to the device until I realized you meant video output.
Any chance you could mention your soldering setup?
3:32 Voultar reference?
great vid steve yep stupid game
😁 thanks David!
Great vid. Nice Work. What's the microscope/screen equipment you are using? I need something like that because of my tired old eyes.
Thanks Simon. The microscope is the Andonstar AD407 amzn.to/3BCjqCG
I really like it, it gives a nice crisp image and makes life so much easier for me👍
Very nice, was thinking of picking up a Duo myself, then sending it to a modder here in the US for this upgrade. I have the skills, but no the time. I was curious what the name of the white glue looking flux you were using?
Thanks MJ. The flux is Chip Quik SMD291. It's the closest I could find to Amtech 559, as that is very hard to get in the UK. (Lots of poor quality clones of it around)
Do you have cats? I can see some major hand scratches dude
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I bought an amplifier for audio for a mod I'm wondering where I can pull the sound since both cd and hu cards have no sound and I replaced the caps
Very well made video once again, but what is that thing? What is it good for?:-)
😁 thanks Willy! They're really nice systems, we never had them in the UK, they're US and Japan only, so it was nice to get my hands on one! 😬
