You think Utena ever gets pissed that no one told her about the Elevator and made her use the miles of stairs for her first half dozen duels or so? I'd be pissed.
Utena started using the elevator because she wasn't a challenger any more, she's been leveled up in this "prince game system", she's officially recognized as a pillar of it, as she's getting more and more like a prince to Anthy. Anthy's self image of a "prince" also changed, as her relationship with Utena changing. The sword of Dios of her no longer been used, instead a "sword of the prince" getting pulling out Utena's chest, because she know see Utena more of her own prince, instead of he own old impression of "Dios" as a prince, which made Akio insecure as Anthy getting away from his control (and he starting want to do something towards Utena) In this cool Elevator ride we can also see how Anthy's inside world and feelings develops, she's growing, she's budding, her feelings blossoms. Whe she "casting magic" around Utena, her hands shaping hearts, turning her into a prince. That is how Anthy's thinking of Utena now, her prince, instead of calling out "Dios" which lies inside her mind, she's calling out her own image of Utena the knight, calling her a nobel prince like a white rose, her budding feelings blossoming like pink roses all around her. No wonder Akio pissed off the first time he saw Anthy drew the sword of prince out of Utena, and won without that old sword of Dios. Anthy's getting more and more attracted to Utena, a living prince protecting her by her side, aside from the old memory of him once protecting her as "Dios". But still that didn't change the fact the princess has to be a victim for somebody being able to act as a prince. Utena's been upgraded in this system, but she's still an accomplice of its exploitation to the rose bride, Anthy's picturing herself as the princess for the noble prince Utena did nothing good to this situation as well. The only thing changed here was Akio/Dios no longer being her knight in shining armor, instead she clinged to Utena.
"My birth, absolute birth." It's fascinating to see the Egoist interpretation of Hegelian Dialectics presented so well here. Revolutionary Girl indeed.
I assume you are making a joke with this reference to egoism, etc, but I have my doubts. It is a pretty traditional anime with slight influence taken from Europeans. This is a Japanese work of art. It has two Indian characters. It centers around the upperclassmen in Japanese school. The only European influence I can even find here is with Freud's three states of mind, or possibly that is a reference to Carl Jung.
I mean, it's a show that focuses a lot on power relationships that are abusive (even I am speaking around the subject here now)...not everyone is ready for what the show contends with. And i feel it is better if it goes over some viewers' heads. It is an off-beat 'mahou shoujo' (magical girl) title at its root, after all. Its symbolism is not as bizarre as you think at first glance (prima facie response). But it is veiled. Interestingly the English word 'apocalypse' is derived from a Greek term roughly translating to 'lifting the veil'. So, there is an internal logic, it is simply codified (although as you suggest some aspects seem simply for visual or artistic flourish).
Lyrics: The absolute destiny Apocalypse. The absolute destiny Apocalypse. Birth records, baptismal records, records of death. The absolute destiny Apocalypse. The absolute destiny Apocalypse. My own birth, absolute birth. Apocalypse. A shining place in a desert of darkness. A gold-plated Shangri-La. Day and night turning back on one another. A time-plated Paradise Lost. The darkness of Sodom, The darkness of light, The darkness of distance, endless, endless darkness. The absolute destiny Apocalypse. The absolute destiny, Apocalyptic Darkness.
Then consider yourself lucky, i always been of the opinion you can only understand this if you been in the same terrible situation as the characters on it

you mean the movie? it's often called a "remake", but it isn't a true remake. you should watch the anime and then the movie, it's meant to be a sort of "sequel" to the anime even though it retells the same story. watch the entire anime and the movie will make sense, but not the other way around.
Went to private school, can confirm we have these incredibly engineered duelling arenas just on campus.
Did you fight duels with swords?
@@zainmudassir2964 Can neither confirm nor deny this.

You mean a planetarium?
The Utena school is public, it is said in the game

isnt a evolution with time?there are cars... xD
She never got to skip leg day.
The student council explicitely mentions something about the elevator and only appearing because utena has won the previous duels
Utena's a fitness freak; she probably new about the elevator and disdainfully ignored it.
she probably like the badass walk though
ah yes, elevator music
This sequence gives me chills everytime. The music, the smooth animation. How the camera switches between Utena's POV to Anthy's.
IN THIS CORNER! WITH PINK HAIR AND PURE BADASS-NESS! UTENA!
AND IN THE OTHER CORNER, HER CHALLENGER!
A CAR!
Oh no, it's Christine and she's back with a vengence!
plot twist, utena IS the challenger
Plot twist, Utena is a car too
Ah, the bonus stage in Street Fighter

they had to put the elevator in for this arc so they could get all those cars up there

As many times as I've seen Utena from start to finish, I didn't even consider the new sequence with this in mind! Consider my mind blown!
Thank you for this analysis. This is exactly what I went to the comment section for

Beautiful sequence, visuals in this series were so baroque and fin-de-siecle at the same time
Stop being so smart...
I think we can all agree that Utena was royaly pissed off when she found out there was a elevator this whole time.
when u upgrade from stairs to elevator..

I believe it's Himemiya's point of view
MabusZero Could you explain a bit more about that? It sounds so interesting.

there are two indians character due to the fact Utena was inspired by Hesse's works, especially Demian
the european influence isn't that light
This version gives me absolute chills.
The music of this series is sooo good! high quality stuff.
As usual, the use of bizarre symbolism lends a delightful undertone of WTF-ery to an already awesome sequence.

Simply the best show ever. I get chills seeing Utena's prince transformation with Anthy at her side.
I am not a huge fan of animes, but seriously, I think Utena's OST is my favorite.
When this music plays, I dance in my bed XD!
This is your brain on planetarium projector.
this music is great, the lyric its like a poem dedicated to darkness
Ah yes, now *this* is what I'd like to listen to in the elevator.
0:20. Ikuhara TOTALLY reused this animation in Sarazanmai when Reo and Mabu came back to life.
He loves that shit. It's in the penguindrum op too, I believe.

Taking an elevator has never been more badass.
This is where Steven universe was heavily inspired. Even the rose symbol, and Steven and Connie they all were inspired from this show
Yeah boy oh boy I love that part in Steven universe where yellow diamond summons the horny adulthood car and convinces kids to get in
