@@LPWatterson Honestly despite it obviously being a way to keep the series under budget it fits perfectly for the themes, a never ending cycle that constantly repeats.
I think it's surely tough for non Japanese to get the interpretation of these words, especially as for what the entire combination of words ”もくし-くしも-しもく-くもし-もし-くしくも (mokushi kushimo shimoku kumoshi moshi kushikumo)" means, but actually it's really an important phrase and part that composes this song considering the show's whole context. Well, it's "gibberish" even for Japanese as the whole sentence, but you can clearly read the last phrase of these repeated sentences --- "もし くしくも" --- as the combined words that have an actual meaning: "もし" (moshi, "if" in English), "くしくも" (kushikumo, "by chance/possibly" in English) in Japanese. Therefore this phrase in the lyrics actually means "if you...by chance...", punning on the word "もくしろく(mo-ku-shi-ro-ku)" --- apocalypse in English. You can also interpret these described words and the wordplay as the representation of the possibility and the transformative power that Utena has for her future ruled by destiny, not yet decided absolutely.
I'm going to add something to this mokushi shikumo thing If you align the 'shi' in the repeated mokushi kushimo vertically, it'll form a stair like the one in the show mokushi kushimo shimoku kumoshi moshiku shikumo mokushi kushimo shimoku kumoshi moshiku shikumo

I know Latin is the go-to language for ominous music, but if this song suddenly plays while the apocalypse is starting, I'll just lay down on the grass and cry while waiting for my impending death. Just imagine the sky turning blood red or the Colossal Titan looking over the wall and suddenly you hear 'Zettai Unmei Mokushiroku'... I'll cry like a bitch if I'm not paralyzed in fear.
My favorite part is from 1:17 to 1:25, it has such a dramatic tone and uplifting melody at the same time! Ironically, it directly precedes the part i like the least...
Partly because I don't think everyone would get the religious reference. My intent for this was to get the most basic idea of the lyrics across, without being very literal. Also I try to match the lyrics to the beat of the song and this lyric flows a lot better. :P
It's sodomu. That's the Romanization given in both the official subs and the booklet from my CD (Angel Creation Namely Light), as well as everything else I've looked at.
I love how people are skipping out on the, "plain English" part of the title. I remember the first time I watched Utena (subbed) I remember laughing at the translated lyrics. Not knowing that it actually had deep meaning to the show. But this... this just clears up the confusion for people like me. People get so easily butthurt anymore.
Some people (most people) are terrible at interpreting lyrics, let alone rich ones like the ones in Utena's songs, so I'm not against simplified adaptations being made if it helps them somewhat, as long as they still keep in mind the real words which were picked with so much intent.

I was curious about the decision to translate the main phrase (zentai unmei mokushiroku) as 'walking to the of creation'. Ive only ever seen it translated as 'absolute destiny apocalypse and im curious about the reasoning behind the decision
The end of creation=the Apocalypse, kinda at least. The person translating this has stated they want to make this understandable for everyone, and so they skipped all religious references, like the Apocalypse, Sodom, Shangi-La, etc
Laia Díaz If you've seen my other videos you should understand how loose I keep these translations in order to fit the beat of the song. I'm very up front about these not being perfect translations. :) Thank you for the input, though!
Wow, the only problem is that I think the disjointed translation which translates it literally as "Absolute destiny apocalypse" is closer to the mark. I see the whole staircase sequence as a visual Freudian metaphore for sexual intercourse. Then, the nonsensical hyperbole fits the "climax" much better.
+SindarinElealar Think visually. Walking up spiral starcase - erection. Mythic city in the sky - vagina. Swords & roses are the most prominent symbols for phalluses and chalices.this should lead you to consider what the duels mean. Utena is a show about teenagers hitting puberty and dealing with their now awakened sexuality. With that in mind, I have no problem at all to consider the whole sequence as first a rising erection and then a "duel" to resolve it between the two persons.
Smygskytt #1 Alright, I can see the rationale. Thanks for the answer :) I can see the entrance sequence in the second part of the anime - parting waterveils with a gate under a rose bud opening up with a splash. Seems like a fairly obvious female orgasm to me. That said, the castle and the staircase I see as more mental than direct metaphors. In the context of the story, vagina being somehow mythical and difficult to obtain feels like a weird allegory - the girls are readily available and indeed, readily used. I could imagine the staircase as raising tension and frenzied heartbeat, perhaps indeed a sexual encounter. However, I imagine the castle as some sort of an unobtainium: the participants want something they can't have through their encounter (perhaps they seek true purity, perfect love, or something of the sort; all they experience is a shallow affair). Though I feel the concept of duel with a winner and a loser is insufficiently explained through such a theory. I feel that level works better on a mental level too - the duelists put themselves on the line to get their heart's desire (inevitably for the sake of someone they have an interest in). The colors of the roses they fight for signify their hearts and the swords are drawn from their chests after all. And the losers inevitably fall for the winners, essentially losing their heart to someone else.
+SindarinElealar If you watch carefully, the entrance to the staircase with the water flooding out, can be seen as a symbolism of vagina. Rose/flower petals are visually similar to that of the clitoris, on top of a hole/gate. Water flooding out is obvious. Swords in general also quite a Freudian symbolism for penis.
The girls are... sort of available. The madonna/whore dichtomy is real in this anime; Anthy is the whore in question, and thus deserves to be used and abused, because an 'unpure' woman isn't worth anything. In order for a princess to be loved, she must give herself, her 'flower' to her prince- however, once she does so, if the prince rejects her, she is a whore as well. All of her power is taken in the act of intercourse. tl;dr: I think the mental and physical symbolism are both equally valid.
Hey, thank you for doing these! I adore Utena, and translation is getting to be an interest of mine. I subscribed. If you ever have an equal choice between another song and Watashi Kuusou Seimeitai, I'd be very pleased to see the latter. ('v')
Oh wow, I was sure instead of saying "walkin of the en of creation" It said "absolute destiny: apocalypse" ... Well, I actually knew the song with another letter. Xd
