What’s your favourite sea shanty???
Here's a Health to the Company or Wellerman
Probably The Flying Dutchman
God, how to pick just one! I'm still listening to your cover of The Ramblin' Rover on repeat (idk if that counts as a sea shanty, but oh well). Old Maui, The Last Length, Roll the Old Chariot, Over and Under, and Roll Northumbria are definitely among my favourites also. There are just so many good ones!
Health To The Company, Bully In The Alley, & We Shall Sail Together. Also Where Am I To Go M'Johnnies (at least your version of it) and Over And Under... Too many good ones to choose from.
What do we do with a drunken sailor
Ah yes, a Colm McGuinness cover of an Unleash the Archers cover of a Stan Rogers classic.
I feel like Northwest Passage should be the Canadian national anthem.
Don't forget Dan Vasc. Lol Can you imagine if he and Colm collaborated?!
@@corvanna4438 You're not alone. A lot of people feel this way.
And it’s a remaster of a previous cover he did 2 years ago! It’s like an onion song… layers!!
@@corvanna4438it pretty much is our non-official anthem. Our last prime minister Stephen Harper even was on record that it was. 😋
I CRIE EVERYTIEM
!
0:01 - It's another lovely rendition of Northwest Passage, let me get a nice cuppa tea to accompany it...
0:59 - Oh, it's a power ballad, lemme grab a beer...
1:56 - GRAB THE ROTGUT AND LET'S GO KICK STRANGERS IN THE FACE!!! (While crossing Canada)
The progression is real
Rare to see anyone who knows what a song like this is talking about. I live in MB Canada and most people don't seem to know their own land and have no clue of my land or it's history. Thank you for having a clue.
I'd recommend you look up Unleash The Archers' cover of this song if you like this version.
@@ZZMonkeysUncleZZ and Dan Vasc.
This description is perfect 🔥🔥🔥
If you have ever been to Cincinnati’s airport (CVG), located in Covington, Kentucky, (as I have) you have probably been on that same piece of tarmac where a legendary musician and 22 others died. Rest In Peace Stan Rogers and all else who perished on Air Canada 797.
I normally dont like covers of Northwest Passage that add music because to me the power of the song is how all Stan Rogers needed was his voice to dominate a room, but damn if this didnt win me over
Only Colm can wear that sweater while absolutely rocking out and have it work. It's a special bard-barian trait. Absolutely fantastic!
Bard-barian 😂
Well yeah, it's chilly in Canada dontca know?
Does anyone know where *I* can buy a sweater like that?
He has an excellent selection of cable knit sweaters and looks great in all of them.
I think with a voice like that... And all the instruments...Yeah, he can make it work. 🤭
This song reaches to my soul. I studied the Franklin expedition for more than 2 years, read almost every book on the topic.
Why would you have been doing that?
@@tobbcittobbcit8899 Some people love history.
@@fivebrosstopmos yes, but like 2 years? wouldnt 6 months be more than enough?(I am clearly ignorant in these things so honest question)
@@tobbcittobbcit8899 It depends how in depth one wants to go. The final collapse of the expedition provides a few mysteries to explore.
@@corvanna4438 to answer both you and his question. I became one mine ded, obsessed with learning about these men. Where they had walked, who else they knew. Did you know that a handful of the men on Erebus and terror had served on either John Ross’s northern expedition or the 1839 Antarctic expedition
Did I expect 80s speed metal? No.
Did I wanted 80s speed metal? Apparently very much so.
In that case you should definitely check out the Unleash the Archers version of this song, which this cover is based on.
@@TheRealSkeletor That version is absolutely epic.
I'd call it more Power Metal.
@@markcreemore4915you’re right, it’s Power Metal; Motörhead never had flutes, but Blind Guardian sure did!
Lyrics (hope everything is right):
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
Westward from the Davis Strait 'tis there 'twas said to lie
The sea route to the Orient for which so many died
Seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered, broken bones
And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
Three centuries thereafter, I take passage overland
In the footsteps of brave Kelsey, where his Sea of Flowers began
Watching cities rise before me, then behind me sink again
This tardiest explorer, driving hard across the plain
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
And through the night, behind the wheel, the mileage clicking west
I think upon Mackenzie, David Thompson and the rest
Who cracked the mountain ramparts and did show a path for me
To race the roaring Fraser to the sea
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
How then am I so different from the first men through this way?
Like them, I left a settled life, I threw it all away
To seek a Northwest Passage at the call of many men
To find there but the road back home again
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
People like you are the backbone of our society
Stan very clearly sang "a land so WIDE and savage" but that wasn't Colm's choice here
Thanks for the lyrics. 👍
Stan Roger's original but historically incorrect lyrics are Kelso.
I love your original cover of this. I love this, too! The original felt like a lament, full of nostalgia for an old life. This one feels like a journey, an epic full of determination and adventure. Very nicely done!
Listen to Unleash the Archers
Don’t hurt your voice just to impress us-you went pretty high with this one
Stan Rogers had one of the best baritones I have ever heard. Your voice does justice to his quality.
This is my new favorite version of this song. I love how you took the Unleash the Archers approach to a rock version, but then included more traditional instruments in the mix as well.
..try the version by Dan Vasc..
I think this song needs the aggression that comes with metal. I’ve heard many renditions and let’s face it, the journey mentioned had some pretty metal moments. I’m glad to hear you put that aggression into Northwest Passage. You’ve managed to make it different than the UA version and spicier than a standard folk edition. Thanks. 😊
..try the version by Dan Vasc...
This was one of my favorite of your older covers, and I'm super happy to see you're revisiting it!!
Tip of my team Canada 🇨🇦 hat to you good sir! Getting in early for the 40th anniversary of his passing, eh? Definitely scored a double hat trick with this one!
Nice!
I missed the multiple Colms harmonizing on screen :)
Also: the harder they rock the smokier it gets… makes sense ;)
I need Colm to due a cover of The Ballad of the Edmund Fitzgerald
Yes!!!!!
Definitely
Yes please
The first one is among my most played songs on spotify, and i feel like this version will follow. Colm, you never fail to deliver the best music on the entire platform!
I love the transitions. It all just fall in place so naturally
Ahhh ..the nostalgia 🥰 . I love the nod to the OG❤ and as always Cap'n this is outstanding
one of my all time favourite songs and your version is killer you absolutely nailed this man, would love to hear you cover some other Rogers songs like The Idiot and Mary Ellen Carter
"How many times have you listened to this song today?"
Me: "Yes."
While it may not be my no. 1, this is definitely up there as one of my favorite approaches to Northwest Passage. A truly cinematic experience to boot
Definitely wasn’t expecting to hear a power metal rendition of Northwest Passage today.
Stan would be proud.
Yaaaassss a cover of the Unleash the Archers version. Cover of a cover of a classic, love if!
I've loved this song forever. Great cover!
I'm digging the Unleash the Archers vibe this has.
No matter the year, this song and this cover SLAP.
Oh, I have been WAITING for this to happen.
The original was beautiful, Unleash the Archers brought out the metal in it, but I can't wait to listen to this one!
I'm catching up on a huge backlog of my fav RUclips musicians (apparently a _year_ long backlog, oi) and listening as I wind down for sleep.
::clicks play::
O.O
::clicks play 3 more times and definitely isn't going to be sleeping any time soon::
::rapidly sends to multiple friends::
Been waiting.
Love Canada.
Dear precious Lord, there are few quicker ways to make me weak at the knees than impeccable harmonies, skilled a capella performances, and delicious accents.
JUST THROW ME IN A VAT OF KRYPTONITE WHY DON'T YOU.
One of my favorite covers you’ve done. Thanks for introducing me to Stan Rogers
One of my favorite songs - Stan Rogers would certainly approve of this modern variation
Jesus, Colm! Yer such a badass!
There is no better word for this triumph of a rendition than "glorious". Thank you for doing what you do!
Well I'm wide awake now. I love the original, but I didn't know I needed a thrash metal version. Thank you for making my day.
Beautiful lad. Cheers from England 🇬🇧
I was surprised when I got a notification on RUclips. I was touched by the unexpected announcement!
I love how you enjoy making your music for us as much as we enjoy listening to it. Its one of the things i enjoy most about your music. Well that and its just absolutely fantastic. Amazing music as always Colm keep up the good work.
Excellent revisiting of an amazing song
Wow..., just wow..., excellent rendition of one of my favorite songs...
Now that we've had Unleash the Archers and Windrose covers, raises my hopes we get a Valhalleluja cover in time for Xmas.
Marvelous as always Colm! I would love to hear you do a version of You'll Never Walk Alone.
This is spectacular… thank you sir ❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love seeing the multiple of people when they sing! :D
it's always amazing how well you blend so many different genres, and make something all your own.
I love those sweaters! I actually bought one in November and used your code
Fantastic cover of yet another one of my favourite tunes. You keep spoiling me, Colm!
Awesome job colm. Always happy to hear a Stan rogers cover. Never let the memory die
You know, thinking of Stan Rogers makes me think of this song i heard sung by him once. I'd love to see you do a cover of The Witch of the Westmoreland. I think you'd do a great job with it :)
YES! Seconding this!
A collab between this epitome of manliness and @DanVasc would tear a hole in the universe.
Absolutely Colmtastic! I love both versions so much!😊
I am jamming SO HARD to this right now while doing my college work and It's a full on vibe!
This is a lot like my fav version of this song by Unleash The Archers, kudos Colm! I loved it!!💖
I refuse to believe it wasn't, at least in part, influenced by Unleash The Archers' version.
Stan Rogers is smiling broadly and (saying that it's a "land so WIDE and savage . . .). Also he is saying, "Sing it Laddies!!! !!" As a peron who is descended from many spirited Irish people, I am CANADIAN when I hear this song.
One of my favorites! Amazing as always Colm👏
Much luv❤
Man if this was done in the 80's, instant hit. Guaranteed.
OH MY FRIKIN COLM! Comrades this is a blessing that we can live at the same time as this amazing sailor and enjoy his music! I can't believe that u make not one but two masterpieces of the same song - THAT ROCKS!
What sailor?
This is why I’m subscribed. Every few days I get to listen to perfection. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Ooh the classic 3 colm setup!
Wow completely rocking it!
We need more of this yelling Colm 🎶
Once again Colm makes me wish I could like a video multiple times on this site.
THIS JUST SHOOK MY SOUL AND ALSO MY ENTIRE CAR
Grandios 🤘🏻 💪🏼 🫡
Man the first time I heard this song and not knowing anything about it to learning about the Beechey Island bodies and how doomed crews of The Erebus And Terror actually were, this song is super good but extremely haunting….. history is cool
Goosebumps...
I already loved the first version of this one, and now to hear it again!! How amazing!!! Thank you!
I love it so much!!!!
Holy Fuck! that was Brilliant. i just found your channel ,as an irish metal/folk/shanty head i can say this was exactly what i was looking for. \m/-_-\m/
Great music as always!!!!
That's different. I've never heard Stan covered quite this way before. Well done.
You are awesome
I've lost track of how many times I've listened to this cover these last few days. Great job!
God, you are doing this justice Colm! It's powerful *and* epic! Let's go Colm, let's go!
you know when colm's mic is visible & there's a side view it's a metal cover let's fuckin GOOOOOOOO
How is it possible that everything you do is just pure gold? Do you at least stub your toe every now and again ?
I have only ever listened to Polish version of this song and I must say that the world was poorer for not having this version. I absolutely love it!
@@JustinThorLPs ruclips.net/video/NWUnRRJsxJc/видео.html Here you are! A bit different from the rock-y version here, but nice to my ear.
Well this version of the song is all kinds of excellent
Actuealy, me :
...
* head bang *
As more information comes out about the Franklin Expedition, and I learned there was a possibility that they could have found their “northwest passage” it absolutely shatters me this song, and now this cover
When I first heard Colm go up an octave, I was like "No. Surely not" AND THEN HE GOT IT. GO COLM!!!!
I wish I could like this video more than once
Bloody good song.
Ooooh yes! One of my favorite sea shanties 🙌👏
Oooh a Celtic rock ballad!!
And then this fun twist right at 2m
Turned out awesome, as always.
Unleash The Archers gotta be fucking proud of this :D
for the love of all that's good please never stop singing.
Absolutely awesome!
Next: The Hot Asphalt, same vibe.
I will be honest that I prefer more traditional versions of this song. That being said - yours is one of the more original takes and the execution is excellent as always. Well done :)
I can hear the voice of wind and sea calling to me even though I am far way from my brother and sister. Thank you
Damn man, I didn't think anyone could do such a badass cover of Stan rogers, yet here you are.
This video made me a subscriber!
a rock cover of Stan Roger’s song “oh no not I” would be awesome. i surprised no one has done it yet.
And into the metal playlist it goes!..
Excellent. If you get to Portland Oregon I’d love to jam with you. Thank you for augmenting my sense of this song. Much love to you. Thank you for the awesome rendition sir. -An Opera singing metal musician
